Sabaton always makes such great videos.
The drummer is married to Floor Jansen.

Fun fact: The Bismarch wasn't sunk due to damage . . . it was functionally disabled by a REALLY lucky shot from a torpedo to it's rudder. It was basically only able to move in a circle, so the officers called in, and were told to scuttle the ship and let it sink so the Allies wouldn't get it.

    • @NostalgicMem0ries
      @NostalgicMem0ries 7 месяцев назад +1

thats a technicality , it was torpedo that fatally hit it, it would have sank in time, they just made it sank faster to not allow allies get parts of it

    • @MatthewJarvis-zw2sz
      @MatthewJarvis-zw2sz 4 месяца назад +3

The actual cause of the sinking is not known, even after the wreck was examined. The Bismarck was indeed damaged by the torpedo dropped by a Fairey Swordfish, jamming the rudder and preventing the Bismarck from outrunning her pursuers. She was then absolutely pummeled by ordnance from several Allied ships, and after she was turned into a floating inferno and the last turret was put out of action, the order to scuttle was given to her crew. Shortly afterwards, the HMS Dorsetshire was ordered to fire several torpedos at the battleship to finish her off. She sank shortly afterwards. But it's not certain what exactly caused her to sink, since she was already listing quite badly by the time the Dorsetshire fired the torpedos, and she was so damaged by the shells fired by HMS Rodney and King George V that it's almost impossible to attribute the sinking to any one particular action.
The Dorsetshire was given official credit for the sinking, since she was the last ship to fire upon the Bismarck, but the cause of the sinking is generally understood to have been a combination of the shells fired by Rodney, KGV, and Dorsetshire, the torpedos fired by Dorsetshire, and the scuttling actions by the crew. It's not known if the ship still would have sunk anyway if it wasn't scuttled (she was very damaged after all), or if the torpedos even had any effect, so the actual cause will probably never be known for sure.
The wreck is at such a huge depth and is partly buried in mud, so extensive analysis is difficult.

No it could still move in a straight line after the rudder was hit. It made for the shore trying to get to the nearest port for repairs but the British navy caught up with it and they shot it up until it's guns were completely dead (that's what the guns fell silent line is referring to in the song) that's when they decided to scuttle the ship. It's hull was also so sturdy that it didn't break ever, it rolled over and disappeared under the water until divers found out it again many many decades later.

A great Sabaton song. I consider Sabaton the History Metal band. They literally have a Sabaton History Channel and they research all their songs for historical accuracy. Most of their videos are theatrical like this one.
Also check out Christmas Truce(maybe at Christmas Time), No Bullets Fly(Animated Story video), Soldier of Heaven (Official Music Video), Stormtroopers (Official lyric video) to start you out.

Oh! How nice!! To see a family reacting to this amazing band!
Sabaton is one of the most popular Metal bands in Europe. They sing about war stories of old . Never pick sides , but just telling the story from a historical perspective.
...Which in Europe has made them very popular also among history teachers in schools . Using their music in school to make the pupils raising the interest and attention of different events/wars etc.
Sabaton also have tons of good musicvideos to most of their songs . They also have some animated musicvideos to for exemple their songs "No Bullets Fly" and " Night Witches"
(Make sure you are watching the long version of those songs with the history behind the songs . Closing in to Christmas and all...
also check out their recent musicvideo to the song "Christmas Truce" ...Their musicvideos are all like minimovies!
Welcome to the Sabaton Metalloving army! :-)

welcome to heavy metal (or actually more power metal) History. Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band and most of their songs are about warfare and history. (their first album was before they came up with the history thing) they take no sides and just tell the story. And are great live. They are a fantastic way to get your girls interested in history, they are fantastic storytellers, the bards of this age if you will.
Some suggestions are. No Bullets Fly is an amazing story, very emotional too, watch till the end
The Christmas Truce is their Magnum opus in my mind.
Night witches, watch the yarn hub story version, an amazing story of amazingly brave women.
they have A youtube history channel where they talk more in-depth about the history of each song.

Ok..the newest member of Swedish metal band Sabaton, is guitarist Tommy Johansson. He does his own thing, and posts incredible covers on his channel every Fri.
Here's why you need to check out Tommy... he takes Sabaton songs and rearranges them to the melodies of big Disney songs. He calls it DisneyTon. I cannot describe this to you...but the girls are going to LOVE it! And BTW, Tommy has one of the best power metal clean pure voices you'll ever hear... in addition to him playing all the instruments.
I suggest start with Primo Victoria, DisneyTon version.

Sabaton is a Swedish band who sing about military history. The song "Bismarck" refers to the German battleship of the same name during World War 2 which sank during a battle with the British Royal Navy in the Denmark Strait (the sea between Iceland and Greenland). The battle took place in 1940 (before the American entry into the war) and ended with the British destroyer HMS Hood and the German battleship Bismarck sinking during the battle

    Just a couple points:
    1) You wouldn't have caught this, but the stenciled "name" of the boat during the beginning prep phase of the video was "Primo Victoria". That's the title of their first military history themed album.
    2) If (when) you do Christmas Truce, there are 2 videos. They each have advantages:
    - The Yarn Hub animated story video includes part of the history at the beginning & ending to add to the story of the song, but it's cartoon graphics. Picture quality reminds me of flash animation, but movement/animation is much better than that.
    - The music video is even more of a "mini-movie" than this video is with incredible visuals (and incredible attention to detail), but there's no explanation except the lyrics.
My opinion: If you do the music video, read a little about what the Christmas Truce was, so you can see some of the details they include. Or watch both. You'll want to hear the song a second time after hearing it once.
Oh! And if you watch the music video, make sure to listen all the way to the end. You might hear a familiar voice.

Your girls are going to be excellent in their respective history classes if you keep watching Sabaton. Almost all of the songs cover historical events that are barely given footnotes in modern classes. If any song is interesting the band also has a history channel that is linked at the end of each of their videos that gives historical analysis and how the song was created. You can throw a dart at any of the songs and youll get something extremely entertaining and informative. A good video for your girls is "Night Witches" which shows how strong the Russian women were during WW2, would recommend watching the animated story video to get the full grasp of what those amazing women did.

a few bits of info regarding the story behind this song:
this battle has two main schools of thought behind it, there's the first where it's viewed as the most pivotal and most influential allied victory of the war because without this victory then it would have meant that Germany could and would have essentially starved Britain out and that we (the UK) would have surrendered to the Nazi's long before turning the tide of the war an winning, there's the second school of thought whereby people think it wouldn't have mattered what the outcome was because thanks to hindsight it's believed that Hitler would have lost the war regardless of what was done and that it wouldn't have affected the overall outcome of the war, while there's good arguements for both sides i'll leave it up to you if you want to read into it further and make up your own mind on that one.
the battleship Bismarck and Tirpitz are both considered international wargraves and as such are both protected by international law as well as forbidden to be disturbed as a result of that status, the battleship Tirpitz the sister ship to the Bismarck is located off the coast of Norway where it was sunk, the actual location of the battleship Bismarck is a closely guarded secret, and the person who found the actual wreck of the Bismarck is the same person who also found the wreck of HMS Titanic, with regards to the pocketwatch compass shown in both the 'ship' scenes and at the start/end in the hands of the trawler captain, while the one used in this music video is a prop and a replica, the person who played the trawler captain piloting the little fishing boat used by the band, he is the grandson of the real soldier that pocketwatch compass was given to and still has it to this day, with the last known co-ordinates of the ship before it sank under the waves roughly engraved into it.
the music video was made in collaboration with the game development studio behind the games world of warships and world of tanks etc, so not only are all the CGI ships shown in the video 100% historically accurate, the actual conflict that is shown is also 100% historically accurate, making this not only an extremely high level music video from an entertainment perspective, but it's also a highly accurate historical retelling of the battle and how the key moments played out.

The "Bismarck" , and his sister ship "Tirpitz", were the 2 largest battleships ever built in Europe (250 meters long, 36 meters wide, and displacing more than 50.000 tones) and they were the pride of the kriegsmarine (Germany's militari navy) during ww2. The "Bismarck" set sail in May 1941 to reach the Atlantic and destroy merchant convoys, but he was intercepted by the British and during a brief fight, destroyed the former flagship of the British fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, the worldwide famous battlecruiser "Hood", by penetrating her armor and detonating her aft main ammunition magazine and killing all 1400 members of her crew except for 3 men, and heavily damaged the battleship "Prince of Wales". This enraged the prime minister Winston Churcil who ordered all his ships in the Atlantic to abandon their operations and destroy the Bismarck. In total more than 40 ships participated to the hunt, making it the biggest naval hunt in history. Meanwhile Bismarck, who had received a hit from "Prince of Wales" during the first battle, was leaking fuel and was trying to reach the French port of Saint Nazaire, in occupied France, for repair. After 3 days of playing cat and mouse with the British, Bismarck was attacked by airplanes launched from the aircraft carrier "Ark Royal" and hit by a torpedo in the stern, which jammed his rudders during evasive manuvers, meaning that he was forced to sail in circles, just a few miles away from reaching air cover. In the end battleships "King George V" and "Rodney", along side the heavy cruisers "Norfolk" and "Dorsedshire" fought the already doomed battleship and, during the following 90 minutes completely destroyed it. However, despite having all her guns destroyed, and having received more than 400 hits (out of the 2800 shells that the British had fired at her) her armor was still mostly intact and the ship was still afloat. So the british launched another 4 torpedoes and he disappeared beneath the waves. After inspection of the wreck however it had been discovered that the torpedoes did no significant damage thanks to the battleship's excellent armor, and that Bismarck had been scuttled by its crew (although it should be noted that many historians believe that it would have eventually sunk due to the damage received). Of the 2200 men that served on Bismarck, only 114 survived. The old man seen in the video is the son of the last survivor, who died in 2018, 1 year before this song was released

Only 1 battle, only 1 kill, and yet with only that it became the most feared and hunted warship of WW2. Her life wasn't long, but she took out the pride of the Royal Navy, Hood, who was considered unsinkable. This is what caused Bismarck to garner such fear, respect, and hatred. She only lived for a single day after that battle. On the second day, HMS Rodney and HMS George V found and opened fire on her in order to ensure she was sent down to Davy Jones' Locker along with a swarm of airial bombers. While they may have succeeded in physical combat, the only thing they truly accomplished, in the end, was immortalize her in legend and history.

Night Witches is such a cool story from WW2 with brave young women as a great example for your girls! :)
P.s. the Drummer is married to Floor Jansen from Nightwish. :)

The Nazis did really horrible things but their engineering is so impressive.
The hull of the Bismarck was so thick that torpedos and convential weapons couldn't penetrate it. It took an entire fleet to finally take it out and even as it sank it never broke, it rolled over and slipped beneath the waves.
The British Navy had a cruiser called the HMS Hood that was the pride of the British Navy. In the battle against the Hood, the Bismarck cracked the entire ship in half with a single shell.

You have to hand it to the team that made the CGI for the video - they even added the single middle barrel firing from Turret Anton as she was going down.
About the only error is that her upper most parts such as the spotting top is shown as in place when it was really held in by weight and fell off as she slipped under

I would recomend Night Witches animated story video, about a regiment russian female bomberpilots and navigators, if you wan't something closer to home i would recomend Devil Dogs about the Us marine Core and the Battle of Bellau Woods. i would recomend the official music video (clips from their 2019 US tour, it really shows how diverse their audience is)

And if you do want to watch an epic live performance, try 'En livstid i krig' from the great tour. Its in Swedish but use the subs.
...or why not 'Ghostdivision' from Polish Woodstock, also a great event...
    So much to choose really.

Sabaton did a fantastic job of telling the story of the Bismarck but still not all info didn’t make it to the lyrics and video. For more information look at History Channel on RUclips for: The Hunt for the Bismarck.
