Me too, The tears flow often for me during this and Night Witches and No Bullets Fly, the fact that these stories are real make them really emotional. I wish the human history was not littered with such sadness and violence, but hopefully the future will bring about a change where these kind of events do need to happen, one can only hope. Stay strong Metal Cat Ava and as EvilJeeP said don't be ashamed of letting your emotions show, it shows how compassionate and kind you are, and Metal Dad it is great to see you being there and opening new worlds for you kids to see and learn from.

You did the right one. A very good song for this time of year. Kudos to all that recommended this one. You know it's good when it elicits an emotional response like it did for you and many, many others. No shame in showing emotion Metal Cat Ava, it is a tearjerker. On the piano he was playing Carol of the Bells. I give it a 5/5.
May your daughters and their future families never have to know the horrors of war. You can lean more about the Christmas Truce of 1914 by viewing the Sabaton History Channel. Just search RUclips - Christmas Truce - December 1914 - Sabaton History 107. May you, Metal Dad, and your family have a safe and Merry Christmas.

This is one of the greatest stories from WWI. Of soldiers continuing the chivalric traditions of their ancestors. Also, I cry myself. Watching "The Return of the King" makes me cry at so many points. For example, when the Rohirrim arrive at Minas Tirith and King Théoden, Merry, and Eowyn so their fear at the odds that are worse than they thought they would be. Rohan had about 6,000 men, Mordor had around 50,000-100,000. Then Théoden rallies his men and yells "death". Not that the orcs would die, but that THEY would die. On a fun note, this siege is based on a real siege from history. The 1683 Siege and Battle of Vienna. Sabaton has a song about that battle. "The Winged Hussars" One of their all time best. (Also one of their most memable songs).

Metal Cat Ava, it's okay to cry. Many ,many have cried watching this video. You are not alone.
The piano intro is Carol of the Bells played backwards. This video is movie quality, it was made by people who usually make movies. When the world shut down, no movies got made, so they had time for this. The entire band was in the video. The first soldier out of the trenches, the tall blonde guy, is drummer Hannes Van Dahl, Floor's husband. Guitarist Tommy Johansson threw the grenade, guitarist Chris Rorland was the first soldier on the other side out of the trenches, bassist Par Sundstrom is the guy with the beard in the trench that tried to call Hannes back.
The truce really happened and was unofficial, the officers and higher ups were pissed that it took place. Following years, they threatened the troops with punishment if it happened again, including execution.
Something to cheer her up. Does she like Frozen? Look on Floor Jansen's RUclips channel. Floor has done a cover of 'Let It Go' from Frozen. She made it during lockdown when her daughter was about 3.

Part of the history about this is it was during the first year of the war. It was before the Germans introduced poison gas, before Zeppelins started bombing London, before the hate and animosity could really take root.
And no shame in crying, grown adults cry about it too. It's a bitter-sweet and beautiful story.
Be warned though that the "No Bullet Fly" animated story video may hit a little harder. It reduced me to tears first time I saw it.

Stories like are important to remember and I hope you never stop being emotional about it.
I can't imagine there are many in the US who can truly understand the scope of the horror that was World War I. There was a battle where the front lines stretched across France from the English Channel halfway to the Mediterranean and lasted days without a break. No one was ready for this new level of warfare. Hundreds of thousands of people dying for nothing more than agreements between rulers to send their citizens to fight for someone else's argument, people pushing back on rulers who made their lives miserable, and powerful people wanting more power for no other reason than they felt entitled to it.
It's important to remember that each casualty from a battle in history or today is more than a statistic but is a person with hopes and dreams and family and friends.

I met an old man in the mid nineties when we were filling our fuel drums at the local airport. He was a scrawny little dude, but had such a powerful voice and presence that you couldn't help but listen. What follows is an excerpt from his journal from the period.
I went down late in the day on the 24th, struck in the engine I could not press on. My crate nosed over into shell hole, I came to much later. I could do nothing but hide, the madness of no-mans land reigns terror on those caught in it. Darkness fell, and an eternity lay before me as I plotted my way out. But something happened that night, a soul deafening silence fell upon the front, followed soon by a single voice in song. Not believing what I was hearing, I peered over the mangled wings covering my hole. I saw a single man, standing above the trenches, hands behind his back, singing as though his humanity depended on it. It filled me with a chill the night and snow could not give. Then more of his comrades stood to join him, and they walked onward, slowly and un-armed. I heard a heavy Scottish voice say; "Are ye a'right lad?". A highlander with his pipes was standing aside my hole, his hand extended. Without a thought, I responded: "Shaken, but not dead."
    "It's Christmas, Lad. C'mon."
I stood, and took his hand for help from the hole. Around me I saw what could be described as a wonderous occasion. Men of all sides stood in the desolation, talking in what tongues they knew as though there was no war. There was no hate, no blood, no malice, only cordial respect and humanity. I wondered then, what we were fighting these men for. It struck me then, that each of us had a job to do, but tonight we all refused to do that job and simply be human. The voices rose again in song, and the piper played as we walked to the gathering. I couldn't help but feel that there was hope for us afterall, that we are all the same, no matter our uniforms, our rifles, or our futures. Tonight is Christmas, tonight we sing.
    -Manfred von Schreiber.
    Rest well, old friend.

Dear Metal Cat Ava, I am on old man. I retired from the Army after 27 years, I fought in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. This wonderful song is very tough for me to watch too. I suggest you concentrate on the little interruption of joy those men had, instead of what surrounded it. Talk to each other, and always remember that the purpose of the monster in the story is to show you they can be opposed and defeated.

Out of everything in history the Christmas Truce doesn't get enough attention. The event although it lasted only a day stands as a testament to how pointless war is and how even normal soldiers don't carry the desire to kill each other. It brings out the tragedy and horror of war in a way nothing else does, by showing these two sides could have been great friends and allies if those in positions of power didn't force them to kill and die so senselessly.

Considering that you and yours watch Sabaton, you've probably encountered this already, but she's going to ask questions that even our best poets and philosophers can't answer. Every one of us do after this sort of film. Questions like why do we go to war. How can men who played and sang and even shared Christmas gifts were trying to fight each other.

Ну как Вам сказать! Это в этом смыл Запада! Не стоит выдавать окопный момент за чудо! Если бы политики были умнее не было войны! И даже сейчас Запад! Готов сидеть в окопах и вспоминать!
Well, how can I tell you! This is the essence of the West! Do not give out a trench moment for a miracle! If politicians were smarter there would be no war! And even now the West! Ready to sit in the trenches and remember!

Love the reaction. Sabaton's productions are insane... The unkillable soldier is quite big too. I must do a shoutout to Sabaton guitarist who made a great cover on this song. ruclips.net/video/qYQus1gDimI/видео.html

Great reaction, but please, regardless of what you get recommended, DO NOT watch the official video for Fields of Verdun with your daughters (at least, not until you watch it and decide for yourself what to do). If you do that song, go with the live version (song is amazing and worth listening). A lot of us cried watching this the first time. Merry Christmas

As she knows these are true stories, they might be too much for her to see the visuals of the songs. War stories aren't easy even for adults to watch less for a young child. Hopefully you talk it through with her after these reactions.

So you think it's right to let your little child see something like that. Especially the opening sequence?! absolutely irresponsible!
