    Far better to take out infrastructure. Oil Refineries. Gas plants. Electricity generators. Pumping stations. Ports. That stops the economy pre production. It stops the economy consuming those products.

    He was always like that. I remember Chechnya in the 1990s. He was just playing the long-game with Europe, setting things up for max leverage for when he thought the time was right. IE hooking Germany on RU gas via Nordstream 1, etc. Note the RU gas "delivery problems" prior to the invasion so Europe wouldn't have as much in their storage.

    • @JamesStreet-tp1vb
      @JamesStreet-tp1vb 10 дней назад

      And huge oil and gas deposits were found in Eastern Ukraine and in the Black Sea on both sides of Crimea. Ukraine was making preparations to begin drilling and Pooty knew if Ukraine started recovering these resources his monopoly on European energy was finished. Ukraine would replace Russia as the primary source of energy in Europe. That's why Poot's is trying to steal the territory in Eastern Ukraine. Poot's wants to steal this territory and resources for Russia. Pooty's greed is what's behind this invasion.

      The west doesn't really want him stopped quickly. When Putin goes, the next person in charge will probably be just as bad. What the west wants is for the Kremlin to continue pouring men and material into the meat grinder in Ukraine until they've got nothing left, without moving beyond that to start invading or nuking anyone else. When the nation is genocided and the economy bankrupt, Russia won't be a threat to anyone else for at least a generation - if the Russian women are too poor to raise children even as single mothers, the devastation could last several generations.
      Of course that isn't what Ukraine wants. They want this war over so they can start to rebuild their shattered cities. But when the west finally lets that happen - or Ukraine makes it happen anyway - we owe them a huge debt, because keeping the conflict confined to their territory so that it couldn't spill out onto the rest of the world has saved everyone else a lot of money, but it has cost Ukraine terribly.

      I recall hearing a high level US Army person (as well as a few others) saying in an interview that we actually have mothballed Patriots as well as innumerable valuable and viable pieces of equipment in storage, and it costs the US taxpayer money to store them and even more to dismantle them. GIVE them to Ukraine. But nooo, we actually charge Ukraine for them AND don't even bother to send them stuff that's in working condition. Talk about a huge insult. You'll never hear the Ukrainians complain about it, but mil-bloggers talk to the soldiers and there are plenty of Ukrainian Foreign Legion guys who aren't keeping it a secret either. SHAME on our government for condoning these things.

    • @sballantine8127

      @@kurtwicklund8901 Yes, but are they also ramping up the ammunition those Patriots use up? Not only that, but since the Ukrainians are testing these new and improved Patriots, shouldn't they get some kind of discount for providing valuable testing in real battlefield conditions???
      Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Martin Marietta all play significant roles in the manufacture of a Patriot missile battery (Google it) and it would benefit all of them to learn the pros, cons and suggested improvements for all of the parts they play in the finished product. Remember, they stand to make literally billions of dollars on these systems that have been proven by the Ukrainians to deliver the promised results.

    Richard Overy writes in "The Bombers and the Bombed" quite thoroughly about the effects of long range bombing by both sides in WWII. The effect on morale that Putin hopes to achieve was never successful for either side then. Putin's targeting of civilian and infrastructure targets likewise has failed to drive the Ukrainians out of the war. Perhaps, the best that can be said is that military preparedness by the enemy is reduced by "target" bombing. Germany and the UK found other locations and other means to continue to supply materiel for their respective forces, so even that was blunted. The civilian populations of the Allies and the Axis were inconvenienced for sure but the rising up of opposition to the war was never really achieved. Putin seems not to have learned this and it can be hoped that Zelensky won't fall into the same trap.
