A lot of new NATO tanks have been presented recently at the Eurosatory military exhibition in France, and we got to see a lot of innovations and changes to the designs they have presented last time, some good changes and some not so much, but we also got to see quite a lot of new stuff as well.
At the last Eurosatory, it was probably the Rheinmetall’s KF51 Panther that got the most attention, and don’t worry, I will cover it in this video as well. But I first want to talk about what I believe is this year’s star of the show, the EMBT and its ASCALON gun...

In 2023 Germany together with Spain, Italy and Sweden announced to be working on the successor for the Leopard 2, seperatally from the MGCS.
It remains unclear if the MGCS program is still ongoing and I actually highly doubt it.
Also none of the tanks shown at the expo are currently undergoing a procurement program so these are very unlikely to be the actual replacements...

LOL @ this really poor effort of propaganda. Every one of our tanks, in the west, have been exposed as utterly useless on today's battlefield. They were all claimed to be the "best" by the USA and NATO. LOL, the remains of which, can be found scattered all across the Ukrainian battlefield in pieces, or others being displayed in Moscow to the world, for the outright rubbish they all were. But these new, modern tanks will be better? Hahaha like everything else, then?
But read the uneducated comments from all those, who really believe they're in the know? Hilarious idiocy, filling the threads as always.

Hello red effect, I was at Eurosatory and got to speak with ppl at KNDS, I won't list everything here but just one thing about the new Leclerc, I genuinely think it's the most impressive bc unlike what you said at the end "all of these are tech demonstrators" that's the case for all the tanks yes, but the Leclerc evo isn't, it's been told to me that this is ready to go and the whole point of it was to make a tank with all CURRENT available technology plus the new gun, and therefore that's what you have, and it's genuinely ready for production. Whereas the Leo ARC is kinda unproven concept area and they're more so trying to do what rheinmetal is also doing altho yeah it's still in a good development phase, and well the embt is just not feasible for now and as you rightly said it's for 2040

With the Ascalon 120/140, I think the Rheinmetall 130mm gun is dead on arrival. It offers 50% greater armor penetration over NATO standard 120mm, and nothing else. Meanwhile, countries with loads of money to spend will pick the 140mm gun with 70% improved penetration, and countries without money will pick the Ascalon 120mm gun that offers 40% improved penetration with new ammunition, lets them use up current stockpiles of 120mm ammo, and can be cheaply upgraded to the 140mm version later by simply swapping barrels and buying/making new ammo.
I also think Poland has the right idea, ditching their mix of PT-91, Abrams, and Leopard 2 tanks (sending them all to Ukraine) in exchange for adopting an improved version of the K2 Black Panther tank with a lengthened hull (allowing them to use a more powerful engine and/or adopt an IFV version that allows them to carry half an infantry squad like the Merkava or the prototype T-84 IFV), plus the new Ascalon gun. An APS seems essential, adoption of the Ukrainian Nizh ERA is logical (more effective than conventional ERA and reduces the surface area of the armor each ERA panel protects, meaning multiple impacts have reduced effect), and the 30mm anti-drone turret and system is very logical. Imagine the K2 Black Panther, but some units having the super powerful 140mm gun, APS, and anti-drone system, and others with the 120mm gun to use up current ammo stockpiles and transporting infantry to support said tanks.

The KF-51U and A-RC 3.0 are the coolest IMHO. I personally like the missile launcher on the A-RC, and I like the aesthetics of it. The same goes for the KF-51U, but the fact that it has Iron Fist, StrikeShield, MUSS 2.0, _and_ a self-contained anti-drone CIWS makes it the cream of the crop for protection. It should be noted that the RMG 7.62 it uses is not a rotary machine gun, but rather has three single barrels which can be rotated in as one heats up. It only ever uses one at any given time, but the fact that it has three allows it to have a much higher single-barrel ROF than other machine guns.Combined with the radar and the other electronics in that RCWS, it can operate completely independent of the crew, detecting and engaging targets all on its own.

What strikes me on a lot of these new propose tanks, is the lack of coaxial MG.
Im not a tanker, but I have heard actual tankers mention that the coaxial MG is almost more important than the main tank gun. Having machine guns only present as remote weapon stations on the turret roof heavily reduces their ammo capcity and makes it much harder to reload.

The protection is mediocre and weight is not much below the lighter end of some main battle tanks with better capabilities such as Japan’s Type 10. It fits in the uncomfortable middle range along with most other light tanks and will likely have some serious disadvantages in battle. Better to go heavier with a stripped down MBT or lighter with an armored wheeled vehicle such as Stryker with a dual use direct and indirect fire weapon such as Patria NEMO 120mm gun mortar in a turret. These can be supported by SHORAD Stryker variants.

to relay on a camera only that can be shattered or even obscured by a little bit of dirt is insanely stupid.
also i dont think 30 mm to take down drones is a good idea , the engine has to be working to power the thing ,the radar is expensive and very easy to damage ,and expensive to repair no doubt (expensive in downtime and manhours ), once a 5 cent bullet hits the radar ,you can easily lose your multi million dollar tank

interestingly the ascalon 140mm cannon sounds a lot like the XM291 ATAC from the 1990's which was also a 140mm that could be changed into a 120mm with only minor modifications, I wonder if they also intend to add stuff like electronic ignition systems like those older cannons were theoretically capable off down the line, infact I wouldnt be suprised if they just flat out went "well we need to develop a 140mm cannon so lets use the XM 291 as a baseline and work out from there" afterall the two guns are very similar and it would make a lot of sense to work out from technology which had already been shown to work as it saves work and it means they can take note of what didnt work and improve on those features and ofc take what does work and improve it with more modern technology

      @@stupidburp yeah... no
the reason these companies are likely going for the 140mm is likely because there is pre existing research for them, and the 140 offers a significant improvement over the 120 while not having severe downsides outside of requiring new munitions to be procured, while the 120 is still adequate most of these guns designed to be transitioned into a 140 are designed with the idea that while a 140 might not be needed now, there is a good likely hood that they might be needed in the future and when that time comes these systems allow for quick and easy conversion, meanwhile a 155 while possible would require a lot of development and research which these companies don't want to spend for likely only marginal improvements over the 140 they have now
also a dual use artillery and tank cannon would be a terrible idea for a lot of reasons not the least bit being that artillery and tank guns have wildly different requirements so you'd be left with a gun not able to do either job very well at which point the gun is kind of useless, there is a reason why we can use auto cannons for both anti ground and anti air roles and its because those weapons lend themselves decently to either role, not so much artillery and tank guns.

It might be conceptually viable, provided that the execution doesn't suck like with T-14.

As far as I know, the loitering ammunition launcher of the Leclerc evolution is not internal, but external and placed above the auto loader. The evolution will still be able to store 22 120mm rounds and 18 140mm

All cool and all but in time of "Oh bugger, the tank is on fire", how fast can the crew bail out from it?
