Who’s ready for a USA vs Italy showdown?!
We’ve got Mat in the Corvette C8 Stingray, and he’s lining up against one of the most valuable Ferraris around - the 458 Speciale!
So let’s see how they compare. Starting with the Corvette, it’s packing a 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 which can deliver 482hp & 612Nm of torque. The engine’s mid-mounted, and altogether the C8 tips the scales at 1,655kg.
Then we have the Ferrari. It’s housing a 4.5-litre naturally-aspirated V8 at the rear, which can deliver 605hp & 540Nm. Naturally, it’s lighter than the Corvette, weighing in at around 1,500kg.
So, they’re relatively even, apart from one key stat… While the C8 is worth around £77,000, the Ferrari will easily set you back £400,000!! The question is, will it prove its worth over the quarter-mile? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

Considering the hp and weight difference, on top of the price, I think the Corvette did pretty crazily good.
The Italians are known for their "optimism" when it comes to car weights. They probably actually weigh about the same.
That’s the point of buying one affordable performance that gets close to a Ferrari.

You might want to rethink that hp number a bit. Mat is way off here.
For starters, he quotes PS for the Ferrari and bhp for the Corvette. Secondly, the bhp number for the Z51 which this is, is 495, not 482. So we are looking at 495 vs. 597, so 102 bhp of difference.
Secondly it well documented that the 458 was slightly overrated on power, and it is equally well documented that the C8 is a bit underrated. So you can be quite sure that it's more like an 85-90 bhp difference if not less.
Thirdly, let's look at weight. It is more like 125 kg difference in the real world.
All that said, the C8 does well for what it is for sure, but one should not be surprised that the 458 is not THAT much better, especially considering the 8 speed trans in the C8 and the frankly abysmal launch control system in the 458's,
@AB-80X even if what u r saying could be possible which tho i dont agree , it's still almost 100 HP less and 125KG heavier and still only lost by a .1 of a second but remember that the C8 is $131,000 less which makes everything you said a waste of your time.

This car was a masterpiece created by Ferrari, practically all magazines who testedthis car archieved 10,9 seconds in 1/4 mile, 3,2 seconds in 0-100 Km/h and 6 seconds in 100 to 200 Km/h, in 2013 this are truly impressive numbers, especially for a 4,5L N/A engine!

Never underestimate a Corvette. I was in Newport Beach for a job interview once. Center lane in my S2000. On my left pull a Ferrari 430. On my right pulls a C6 Z06 Vette. I just kinda hunkered a bit lower in my seat as they started revving. Light turns green, and the Ferrari got dusted like it was standing still.

Holy crap, the base model vette was able to trade some blows with 100hp and 100kg wieght disadvantage! The Corvette team really pulled off some witchery with those gear ratios and overall engineering. Can't wait to see what the Z06 and eventually ZR1 can do!
NO - the Ferrari is nowhere close to 600 hp. Plenty of 458 dynos to prove that.

@@cptnsx Sounds like Ferarri is measuring crank horse power (engine only), not HP at the wheels, then (which is always less than crank HP). C8 is also still in break-in, thus power is reduced by 30%, until 500 miles is reached.

@@TucsonDude Probably the Dji FPV Drone. 0 to 100kmh in 2 seconds and top speed is like 150kmh.
@@TucsonDude Which it is doesn't really matter, these days just about any mid range hobbyist grade quadcopter in that size class is quicker than just about any car. They don't typically top out much above 130mph but they can pull off several G of acceleration. It isn't the DJI FPV quad though, looks wrong for that.
@@yucannthahvitt251 I am not sure about that. Maybe initial acceleration, but not top speed. I have one of the later DJI drones (DJI Mavic 2) and it tops out at 50 mph. Which ones are you referring to that can go that fast? Plus, why do people keep saying "FPV quad"? The FPV is the goggle accessory (first person view). I know because I have them.
Wow I did not expect the Vett to do so well. Incredibly impressive against the Ferrari especially since you could buy 2 Vetts and have a lot change leftover lol
The Vette seems to punch way above it's weight class. It's pretty impressive for what it can do. Still out of the budget of a lot of the car buying public but amazing value for those who can afford it. Unless you're me and don't fit in those cars then it's moot regardless of price.
@@bmstylee Vetts were always one of the very few fast cars I could fit in lol, but haven’t sat in a C8 yet. Honestly I don’t like it at all I’d buy a C7, but it’s a very impressive car for the money and especially for what it’s holding it’s own against.
@@2wheelobsessed I'm not huge but the seats are incredibly uncomfortable. I have a wide mid and upper back from 20+ years training as a powerlifters and the bolsters smash my ribcage. I'll stick with my trucks. More room and definitely more practical. And with the right mods can be pretty quick as well.
You can buy 5.2 Corvettes for what the 458 costs.
Well, it's not fair to compare the price of a mass-produced car against a limited edition handbuilt car which has grown so much because of car collectors. Is it?
That said, the Vette is a lot of a car for the money.

Totally bogus. The 458 was benchmarked, and normally a Stingray COULD NOT BE BEATEN by a 458 in the quarter mile.
I just saw a video of the new Corvette Z06
Flat plane crank, it sounds SOOO good.
Good video. The C8 needs to be in Track mode with the traction button pushed twice. This takes the nannies off and THEN you get the full output of the engine. The Ferrari will still be faster with the HP advantage, but the Vette will be closer. The Chevrolet engineers wanted to keep the car stable and safe for it's average driver so the performance is only full at the Track race 2 settings.

Suggestion: Putting all the cars horsepower , torque and other specifications on one screen side by side so we can compare them easily

For the difference in the price, weight and power I'd say the vette done good against the 458
GM generally undercams their engines. A bigger cam and some tuning will wipe the smile off the Ferrari. Those engines will handle 1000 hp easily.
Also with the price difference imagine taking your vette to Hennessy Performance I bet it’ll still cost less and that Ferrari would know very well what the C8 tail end looks like as it pulls away.
The ferrari is almost 10 years old the reason it gets so expensive is the beautiful engine sound that na v8 revving up to 9k rpm is just unbeatable also its timeless design. Also the very simple but pretty interior with high quality materials. The car is also very nicely balanced and is perfect for circuit days its all about driving experience no one would notice the .5 s launch time difference from 0-60 in normal driving conditions.

That is such a lame statement. First off, those engines will need one hell of a huffer to make 1000 hp. Secondly, GM does not "undercam" their engines, that's a stupid comment. They build their engines to last, to be comfortable to drive and to meet emissions, plain and simple.
Sure you can but some BTR cam and shove it in there and make more power, and you will then also wave goodbye to your warranty, the reliability and the street friendly manners. I have built plenty of LS engines and a few LT1 engines, so I know what they can and can't do. If you think you can just add a lot of power without sacrificing some of the things that make the car as nice to drive as it is, you are sorely mistaken. By that account you might as well throw a pair of turbos on the 458. People do that too and they live as well, so it is what it is.
Apples to apples, stock vs. stock. That's the name of the game.
are we forgetting how the 458 is 10 or 11 years old.. like fam it came at 2010 mate, the c8 came at 2020, PLUS that was ferraris old flagship model and GMS flagship is the c8 so what i am trying to say is if you want to compare a flagship with another flagship then the newest ferrari flagship i am pretty sure is the f8, and yeh the 458 is more expensive but like first of all its a ferrari, second it sounds better ( opinion ) third it is beautiful and lastly it is exotic, the c8 is not exotic it is a supercar but not exotic
my favorite thing about this is you can see the case for both of these. the c8 is such an insane value but the 458 is rightfully like the whole experience perfected at of course a massive premium. either way glad they both exist

All in all the drag races are very fun to watch! But it would be much better when you can display the times of the cars (0-100, 100-200, 1/4-mile,…) and decide the races according to the times. So when someone misses the start and loses because he reaches the line as the second one but have all in all better times it doesn’t matter.
I hope you understand my criticism and I am not the only one who wants this.

Love the 458 but that C8 is a performance bargain, as you can see in this video. The c8 is heavier and down on hp but kept up with the 458 in the drag race, very impressive. The Chevy engineers did a good job with having the c8 put the power down. I would love to see a race between the 458 and the c8 z06, i think the results would be a lot different but that probably goes without saying.

The Corvette in this video also only had 98 miles on the odometer, which means 30% of its torque is limited until 500 miles, which is for engine break in period. In the US, the C8 Corvette gets low 11s unprepped and high 10s prepped. I've ridden shotgun in a c8 vette at Gainesville drag strip and it did an 11.47. I weigh 200lbs and the driver weighed 180lbs
Digital watches measure time the same way or better than a Rolex, yet people desire the Rolex still. Performance is cheap. Craftsmanship, artistry and exclusivity are not.
@@nightdriver7216 Most people cannot afford a Rolex comfortably, but most people can easily afford a functional, accurate Casio. Of course Ferrari is still nice to own if one can comfortably afford it, but then someone who owns a Porsche 918 should laugh at the one who owns a 458 and claim they should give up on it since it's not a 918? Of course not. There are good things in every orice range. That is how they should be judged. Price / Performance ratio is the key. Heavy weight boxers are not thought of as the best boxers. They are only judged by who is the best boxer in the heavy weight division. Everyone doesn't just ignore every other division. They look at who is the best in each division.
Corvette C8 is amazing when it comes to *Price / Performance* ratio.

Try that power figure again. That's actually a 102 bhp difference. The imported C8's are the 495 bhp variant, and the Speciale is 597. Add to that the fact that the C8 is slightly underrated and the 458 was slightly overrated. That difference will probably be 90 bhp at best.

Excellent race! 458 is gorgeous, C8 is very impressive. You'll have to test the new Z06 later this year with the new flat plane V8 making 670HP. It should take the 458 for about 1/3 the price.

Matt, you should try to chase the new-ish Corvette still with the 'Old' 6.2lt, but with 160hp worth of Electric motors to the front wheels, putting it up over 600 hp, and in launching heaven. Or, the new Corvette with the 5.5lt flat plane crank,,, Thanks, Mick.

The C8 Stingray can get with the 458 off the line which is AMAZING! The C8 ZO6 smoked the hell out of the 458 and the Lamborghini Huracan for a quarter of the price ($150,000 US.) Wait until the C8 ZR1 comes out. Smoking McLarens won't be a problem at all unless they are electric👍💯
Despite how great they are, i would go with the C8 as it's more daily drivable than the 458s, and for a much cheaper price i can still keep up to the 458s as well.
I dunno, I drive a F430 spider manual and it's a great daily driver.

@@Clayson000 ?? I had my F430 spider manual since new in 2007. Only in the shop once. I'm not sure it's less reliable than a Chevy. However, the Chevy looks... odd. It looks like a cheap toy robot, and the body is weirdly long-looking. I like ALL the previous Corvettes' appearance, but this one is just too randomly styled. Speed doesn't really matter to me pas a certain point, but I traded a four month old R35 GT-R for the Ferrari. I expected it to be slower but the Ferrari on a roll could actually slightly gain on the first-generation R35, by like a half a car-length in 10 sec, according to "tests" on empty Japanese highways. And the cost of an item like a car isn't the purchase price, but rather the depreciation. My Ferrari took a big hit when the 458 came out then a little hit when the 488 came out, but it's value's inching upwards now. I grant some Corvette models appreciate but most don't. Basically by comparing purchase price, not depreciation, you're showing yourself to be a poor person, and stupid enough that you'll remain poor.
@@lqr824 1. how often do you drive the car, if not a lot that would explain the lack of service you have had to do. 2. the f430 only wins at rolls because it had decent power and low weight, (good job on watching a video of a gtr and 430 racing from a roll, the half a car length was spot on). 3. how would wanting the cheaper and better car make me poor, it shows that I know what to do with my money if I ever wanted to buy a sports car, which would be the stupid thing to do. I you want to get a fast daily driver just get a motorcycle, I could walk your f430 with a 6k bike.

While driving from Tokyo to Fukuoka there was about 15 min where there were no other cars in sight, when a GT-R entered the highway right next to me. I had just sold my GT-R and since I had RHD and he had LHD, we could actually converse at sort of 50mph and decided to try a roll. I was surprised as the GT-R is so mind-bendingly quick off the line thx to 4WD and having VERY close gears low down. But from say 30MPH to 130MPH the top-down spider had the tiniest tiniest advantage. I didn't speed-shift but started at like 5800RPM and shifted at redline. (Manual.)

lol , its a DECADE older. The 458 released in 2010 .... They had a whole decade. Also , interesting fact , the corvette C8 was actually benchmarked to the 458 . Thats why the ferrari is going up in value, the 458 was special for the emotion it gave drivers.
To everyone shocked how good the corvette is , i must admit it is . But the numbers are not . a 2019 bmw m5 does a 11.1 quarter mile and thats a 4 door sedan.

I just got the 2024 Vette, the base 1LT model with the Performance Active Exhaust and 495hp. I have never owned a car that launches this hard. Got a 0-60mph in 2.8s yesterday... Just blistering fast when you use launch control at 3500rpm...
Honestly props to the C8, because that’s a base corvette. And of course the speciale isn’t a baseline Ferrari.

excellent comparison. Amazing how well matched the C8 is especially for a fraction of the cost. Just based off this I think a lot of the high end exotic/supercars are going to find themselves outmatched with the z06

The problem with the corvettes is that they are making cars that are 10 years outdated. Ferrari is using decade old technology while this is Chevys brand new stuff. Comparing new to new, Chevy doesn’t have a chance.

It's amazing how cars get better over the years. A 150kg heavier and 100hp less powerful Vette gave the Ferrari a run for its money after being released just a few years later. Impressive

Speciale is a 2013 car… the one in the video is a 2014 but the Speciale was unveiled in 2013, at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Z mode isn’t the top mode in the c8 the z mode is a saved preset for the driver, the corvette has a track mode that can be selected from the knob by the gear buttons
Even that is not the shortest mode. The competition mode or race 1 or 2 mode
A Ferrari 458 came out in 2010, and the C8 a decade after. This should be called old Ferrari vs new Corvette.

Most likely has to do with reliability. American models of cars usually have poorer reliability
@@-SP. that is NOT why lol. Removing 15hp wouldn’t increase reliability. And the LS/LT engines are very stout…hence why they’re swapped into basically every other platform. And they’re definitely more reliable than most anything from Europe. I’m sure the reason for the detune is emissions or sound related.

I think they have more restrictive emissions and noise rules that lower hp in most models over there. For example, their AMG cars all sound pretty shit compared to ours here in the states.

So 90 kg lighter while having 188 hp & 11 Nm more than the vette in this video. Compared to the Ferrari it makes 65 hp and 84 nm more while being only 60 kg heavier. The Z06 is also 0.3 seconds faster from 0 to 60 (2.6 verse 2.9).
The Z06 has always been the one you want if you are hunting the exotics. The new C8 version just takes it to a whole other level.
