      @@HouseImprovements Years ago, I wrote instructions for setting up and operating manufacturing equipment. One day, I got the idea to videotape the process and then created a comic book from the video. On some of these videos, I am tempted to make my own comic book so I will have these instructions actually out on my project.

      +Altair Ibn-La Ahad Yes it is much cheaper to do it yourself if you can, but not all people can or have houses that are easy to do. In hiring any contractor you need to get at least 3 estimates from reliable contractors that have multiple references. It is also important to check on the contractor with your states builders board to see if he is licensed and if he has any claims against him/her.

    • @blake4701
      @blake4701 7 лет назад +20

      Altair Ibn-La Ahad there are a lot more expenses to running a legitimate business than a simple wage. payroll taxes, equipment maintenance, licensing fees, WCB, Professional Associations, on going certifications regarding safety etc. Not to mention there can be warranty costs, and no pension/benefits of any kind for the contractor. Also, installing the siding is only half of it at best. proper installation of the envelope (homewrap, dripcaps, and flashing of all types). i have seen so many jobs with improper moisture management issues. there is a huge difference between do it yourself/handyman work and a professional job.

    I liked your video I didn’t see how you waterproofed the TYPAR vapor barrier/house-wrap to the weather-strip you sealed under the window? On the west coast if we don’t tape the house wrap to; the weather-strip that’s sealed under the window or to the window itself, the installation WILL LEAK. I like to install a plywood blade and my saw backwards which gives me a smooth cut and eliminates possible chipping

      Micah Houghton Generally speaking in most regular cases where the home is sitting on a foundation ,I place the starter strip so that the bottom edge is just maybe 1/2" below the wood plate of the walls. Seal the joint between the wood plate and the foundation first with a good quality exterior caulking. Please use my forum if you have future questions. www.house-improvements.com/forums/

    The point you bring up about two people nailing on the same job is an important one. Me and another guy I work with every day nail siding differently and continually have to watch our corners to make sure we are still lined up. It’s VERY easy to get off to where it’s visible to the eye

    thank you. your descriptions are accurate and easy to understand and you have a very clear voice (why people with thick southern drawls even attempt how-to videos boggles my mind.. i generally cant understand a single thing they say), well done!

      We can't understand what y'all say from up in Canada or in some of the northern parts of the US either. It's a two way street my friend so don't start on people from the south! You might be able to understand this guy but I had to go back to understand some of the things he said. He did a great presentation but I couldn't understand him completely.

      Jeff Wilson heres the thing.. we speak proper english. if you cant understand it then you need to adapt (we won the war after all). i can easily understand people from most parts of this country, from maine to washington the only part of this country i cant understand people in is the south (and east of the mississippi). i dont want to bring up education levels since they are all in decline, but "y'all" need to learn to speak PROPERLY.

    You do good tutorial videos. You speak clearly, explain well, and your camerman gets the shots properly...which is all god sent considering the crap people post just to show off.

    Last year I spent almost $5000 to have a two-story 24x24 building behind my house covered with vinyl siding. After watching your video I tore part of the front of my house off, installed a wider door and double-pane window, and then used the leftover vinyl product to do a beautiful job that perfectly matches my rear building. You really make things easy to understand, and cover all bases very well. Keep up the great work, I have a lot more home improvement to do!

    I've been doing construction full time for 18 yrs since I graduated when I was a junior. I wish I worked with this guy. I'm a master carpenter and multi skilled tradesman, every video I've seen by Shannon is spot on. You'll learn a lot the right way from this guy, he cuts no corners. Subtract 3/8" in the winter because it'll expand in the heat: subtract 1/4" in the summer because it'll shrink in the winter. 1/4" up and down for clearance is fine all year around, it moves mostly over the length of the piece, less over the height. Keep your nails to the top of the slots, leave your nails a nickel or a dime from the siding for movement, too much and the wind will push the vinyl into the nail and stamp the heads into the piece, visible through the face. Popping tabs up through the face are nicer than silicone if you ever have to pull a piece, also silicone only holds you at the bottom, not at the cut top of the piece at the accessory trim, whether at the sill below a window or the final row at the top, if you want you can also use undersill/accessory trim in the J-channel at the bottom if the bottom cut-off in an elevation difference if the cut-off will make the top row. Every manufacturer is different, some say 3/4" into the stud, some say 1 1/2" nails minimum, so with 1/2" sheathing they go into the stud 1." The. 2" if you're going over existing wood siding, add for thickness of any foam installed additionally over sheathing to length of nail. Also keep your nails up to the top of the slots

    Excellent teaching for me. I had asked a couple of siding companies for estimates on a small project at my house (adding siding onto a porch converted to a bathroom) and they said the job was too small for them to tackle. So, with no other options, I'm doing it myself and this video gives me great advice and instruction on how to do it. Thank you, man!

    Outstanding video Shannon. We had no idea how to put siding on and wanted to put vinyl skirting around the wraparound porch at our house. Just finished the project and it looks great. Thanks so much for this video. Watched it many times through each step of the process! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this video.
