Another informative video, not only showing the 'hows' but explaining the 'whys'. Thank you for sharing! Regarding the overlap - wind is surely a factor to be considered, but also.... we usually overlapped so that the butt end of the overlapped piece isn't visible from the main focal points ie. the entry door or as you approach the home. (makes the joints sort of 'disappear')
In all the years of hanging vinyl siding, we've " never " put seams where a full panel can be installed. The cut-offs can be used somewhere else as starters or finishers. If it's too keep your cost down which would be very little, so be it. Last, mitered J-channels at doors, windows, etc. makes for a nice custom job. I like the color.
no worries. I get the choice. On this house there was no place to use the leftover and it isn't even seen from the street. I am not too worried. Cheers!

Love the bit on just cut small the first time and then cut a second time… I have spent too much time trying to make perfect measurements when it’s way better to just get close and then sand or make a small cut too finish.
Seeing you and your son working together remains me of my father and son moments when I was following my father around watching him at his craft. Thanks for the memories. Great video.
Man! I just bought a house with vinyl siding and wanted to know how it worked... Not only do I know how it works, I now know how to repair some of the areas of concern. Such a worthwhile hour!!! Keep it up!
I was also taught when determining your overlaps, depending how the house sits on the property from the street, that you should try and have the overlaps facing away from the street so your not looking at all those hard edges. Easy to do on the sides of the house obviously but tricky on the front.
Exactly. Or if you have a main entrance, lap so it's not seen when walking in. Especially true in the commercial end. Been at it for over 42 years, commercial and residential. Commercial is always ACM architectural panels.
Being a retired roof shingler of 30yrs I can appreciate Jeff your added detail of adding tape across the J trilm at the top of the door to keep the water out. I always went that extra mile with water membrane to redirect and protect the wood. It really shows your attention to detail and your professionalism. Most of my customers really liked that I cared and did every job like it was my own house.
Thank you SO much! I've learned so much from this video. I was SO frustrated & confused as I've watched other videos that I wanted to give up and hire someone. You've given me confidence to do it myself! We're going to install siding to our mobile home.
Your video on this siding was absolutely awesome!! My daughter and her husband are tackling this siding task tomorrow. Watched this video a couple of times to try to soak in all you offered in it. Taking the clip with me so I can refresh if needed. Thank you for taking the time to post this on RUclips!
Thanks for such a helpful and informative video. I just finished vinyl siding my shed and wouldn't have been able to do it without this video. It looks great thanks to all this great information from a skilled professional. I wouldn't hesitate to try doing my house now. Thank you!!!!
I absolutely appreciate this video. It feels like I am an expert now. I have a small project at home that I can now confidently undertake. Thanks a million
Lots of good advice and tips. All the little details and extra care make all the difference for an effective installation. You won't go wrong with this tutorial. Take your time and do it right. Excellent video.
I love the flashing section with Matt making little mistakes that you show him how to overcome. Those were great little tips, that I found helpful. The little insights, and thoroughness of your walk throughs is what sets your channel apart from the other DIY channels! Thank you.
Thanks from Burk's Falls. Enjoy your enthusiasm, your attention to detail and some of your advance techniques. On a tight budget so videos like these help us out. Cheers to you and your team!
I'm a retired Army guy and got a job at a local DIY business in Spokane WA. had a guy talking to me about vinyl siding today and I had never done it before, so i figured, " i wanna be better than that". gave it an ol google, and your video came up and damn than you! Next up is learning about the Soffit! haha Thanks a ton and your video are great!
I just got home from work and 1/4 of my siding was hanging from one side of the house. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these awesome videos and allowing me to fix it myself!
You are very good at explaining everything step by step & loved all the tips! Great job again Jeff! I watch all of your videos & learned a lot! Keep them coming! Thanks!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👌
I agree. Very cool. He was showing off a little bit, but he has the right. After all, look at all the ‘whoops’ of electrical tape he has wrapped around his skilsaw cord. Not the first time the man has cut a board quickly! I once had a foreman tell me and others NOT to sacrifice ‘speed’ for ‘efficiency’. However, if you can do both, you should. This man has earned his stripes. BTW, Carhartt coats run one size too big, so buy a size smaller. Cheers
I salute your unparalleled expertise. I am a snowbird, do you ever supervise work in the New Jersey area? And get paid in Canada? After watching you, I find it hard to trust other contractors. Either way, I am proud of your warm personality and unparalleled Canadian work expertise. ❤
Thanks for posting. I've done my own siding on a few building and it looks good but I did learn some handy tricks from you, thanks! I enjoy watching and learning from you. I also watched your video before doing my bathroom tile, looks great!
you talked about making sure how you nail to prevent buckling. however, when you cut the panel for the overlap you made it so tight that there is no room for expansion between the nailing tab of the pieces. I installed vinyl siding for over 30 years. I was surprised on how well you did almost all of the installation. there are a lot of people online giving out very bad info on this. oh, why in the world are you both using such monster framing hammers to do this work? it is like using a framing hammer for custom cabinet work. keep up the good work. robert
I am here for knowledge on an old home that we might side, but I think I might do my shed as well. My whole house and garage were done before purchase, but they didn't do the shed!
@@deedeedodu I'm only 17 minutes into the video, but so far he seems to be gentle about correction. I haven't seen anything that calls for speaking as though he is being overly harsh or impatient. I'll continue to watch to try and see what made you write that.
I am glad you messed up and had to take some panels off to press the bottom up and make sure it clips to the top of the siding below it. I had no idea that was a thing, now I will remember when I install siding on my house. Watching someone have to redo work really drives it into my memory, as I hate having to do that! I am glad you do not edit out mistakes. First time doing vinyl siding so I have a lot to learn, I will have to watch a few more videos before I start. This is the first video I really watched in detail. I have learned a lot already, thanks!
I’ve been in construction my whole life mostly a trim carpenter /cabinet builder and remodeling. I’m doing vinyl siding for the first time in the next week or so due to a job that I’ve taken on. I was on RUclips looking for installation videos because I want to do a good job and earn another happy customer. yours was the second one I watched I believe I’m going to stick with you thank you for teaching an old dog new tricks I am definitely subscribing and joining thank you so much
I seriously have learned more in an hour than a year working on fixing up a house I'm looking to flip. You're really great at teaching. That's for sure!
Great video as always, you have turned my not sure into I can DO it. When you were trimming out the top of the door and made the statement "on a job site yiu wouldn't see the kind of detail" and most houses wouldn't be compromised with a little water. Over time a little water becomes a big problem. This summer I'll be tackling a big job from a little water. The contractor who did the vinyl siding on my Niece's home (which is 6 years old) didn't do the detailed job you showed. Water got behind the siding and door molding ran down on the inside, rotting the trim, the sill plate, end joist, and subfloor below a patio door. So my advice for anyone doing or having vinyl siding installed is take the time to or (insist that your installer) take the time and added expense if any to address the trim and detail and do it correctly as shown. A little time and expense now will save many an hour and money later. As always thanks for your valuable time and video's
Is there a video of this project being finished up? Particularly curious how the cement board part was installed. And is there a reason why you didn't remove the super old siding too?
Hi Alex, The video showing the entire exterior is still in production. We will have elements of the cement board and how we finish it for sure. The old siding is actually structural when it comes to balloon framing as it transfers load from 1 stud to another. It also acts as a home skin just like osb would so I thought it would be best to leave it since it was dry and hard. we don't get termites up here so wood tends to outperform in a colder climate. Cheers!

If I am going to be hammering a lot of nails a certain distance apart, I use one of the marks on my hammer grip as my measurement. Just put the hammer head on the previous nail and put the next one under your mark. Hammer and repeat.

I understand he wanted 2 make sure the camera can see but we saw where yuh put it so all good from there. If ur gonna do it, do it right. I do what I can to follow that. Only makes things better 4 whoever the work is done for...
I love your videos because you break it down so the common DIYer can get some good ideas to start and finish a project. Hardie Siding would take the punishment harsh Canadian Winters. I used to live in Washington State and the winters would be punishing to a structure.
Definitely do your research and homework. Roofing and siding is an area you should let professionals deal with. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take a shot at it to save some money. Good luck man!
hey Jeff, just wondering, why did you throw away a seemingly perfect looking exterior door? I would have bought it off of you on craigslist for ~50$ change! honest.

I watched the whole video, everything awesome and your attention to detail is amazing, but the last message was what blew my mind, you are an incredible amazing man, the way you dedicated your last words to keep encouraging people to tackle their own projects tells it all.
You are awesome. I already gave you thumbs up a while ago. Now I am starting my project and refreshing your tips., Excellent teaching material. I loved every second. From how you are willing to admit your mistake, have your son on your side, and giving all these tips. My favorite one is the idea to attach a cut of piece to the top, so siding doesn't wobble, genius idea! Again, thank you so much for your videos!
This is fine as long as the wall doesn't get regular high wind and rainstorms. Anyone who hasn't done siding before doesn't even notice the overlaps on vinyl siding.
I have ended up watching hours of you! Thanks for even sharing your mistakes! We are all human and this human is a lady trying to do all this. Lol! I think I can, I think I can, I think I can! Especially watching, so thanks a million!

I have never seen a video on how to install vinyl siding before so this video taught me a lot. The most important thing I learned is that the job must have sex appeal.
I have wstch many videos, from professional insrallers, They are great..one new thing learned from you is to put silicone between door jam and J molding. I always had this question . Thank you.
I thought I was through with renovating this house but my brother wanted to screen in our covered porch. I took the aluminum siding off to find lots of rot. The covered patio is attached to a shed that is half built in a hill. I'm glad you are starting at the very beginning because not too many vinyl siding videos do. I love that you handle projects from a-z because novice like me need to know everything so we don't miss a step.
Thanks for your videos!! Makes it less intimidating. Down in Louisiana where contractors are practically robbing customers with pricing. So I don't mind the sweat equity for my home. Keep it up!
Unbelievably helpful. I had no idea how siding was put together. Loved the nailing tips. Big difference between two hard whacks and a bunch of little peck. And how to hold the nails to guide well and protect my fingers. I was watch these everyday for pleasure and learn so much. Guess I'll need to write a clause in that I want to see work before the next step covers it. Is that okay to write in with out losing my contractor? I had NO idea how much I didn't know!!!!! I drained my hot water heater with no idea about the rest of the steps. Guess it was better than nothing. My friend said she had never drained hers in 20 years! Of course, most things were made better and last longer years ago. See pictures of ancient cars in Cuba and Mexico that are put together with bubblegum and bailing wire and running right on down the road. We look for old refrigerators for our church camp cabins. Use Tham one a year for only a week and they outlast the owners. Mama died at 101 and hers is still cooling and making ice tray ice every year and I am 78. Thank you, Jeff!!!!! You are so cute. Luv you. I am going to Google soffit cause I have no idea what that is.
Vinyl siding, the most worthless invention since the Corvair. Sure they all tell you that you can add Beauty to your house, warm colors easy to install. What they're not telling you is that it is an insect Haven. If you want ladybugs, spiders, red wasps and dirt-dobbers, by the masses definitely install vinyl siding. One of the best things I like about vinyl siding is that it just hides over rot rather than fixing its broken boards...rather than fixing it bad paint.... rather than just fixing it. Almost as if you don't see it, then it doesn't exist, all while your actual house is rotting. When we first Bought our 150 year old house it was covered in worthless vinyl siding. Every room was full of ladybugs wasps millions of dirt dobbers. We literally had an Eco environment made under the vinyl siding. The ladybugs would hide from the winter by the Millions, the spiders were there to eat the ladybugs, the dirt dobbers were there to get the spiders. And the red wasps got everybody. After ripping it off and painting front of the house not one single ladybug not one single wasp no, not one single dirt-dobber. However on the side where it still exists, there are still Incredible amounts of insects. Spending the rest of the day ripping it off now. So go ahead listen to the advertisements how warm nice vinyl siding is what a wonderful product it is as for myself I will run from it
Thank you for breaking it down for me to grasp using the siding. I'm buying a mobile home that has this on the side and the inspector said it's coming off in certain sections. I feel that I'll be tackling it with more knowledge now. !

Keep it up!
hI Aaron, congrats on the new house. Cheers
I was also taught when determining your overlaps, depending how the house sits on the property from the street, that you should try and have the overlaps facing away from the street so your not looking at all those hard edges. Easy to do on the sides of the house obviously but tricky on the front.
Another tip always face overlaps away from the drive way

He is NOT a Hack! it is the attention to detail that gives any project that crisp true look.
I bet this project went well. These videos are better than any other on RUclips. Any update you can provide us? Thanks.
I cant believe the level of quaility in this video, and for free! Thanks for all your insight man!
Thank you.
Thank you sir you are the man, I literally learned how to do my whole house and saved thousands of dollars
Was it as simple as he made it look lol? I’m planning on building a garage and doing my siding myself
That's me, building a detached garage, ready to put on siding now, plan on doing it myself with help from the RUclips experts 😁👍

I have to voice my appreciation of the speed and straightness of the rip cut at 6:55.
I agree. Cheers
@@snarfblattscuttle Master efficiency, and relative accuracy, and the speed will come to you naturally.

I am glad you messed up and had to take some panels off to press the bottom up and make sure it clips to the top of the siding below it. I had no idea that was a thing, now I will remember when I install siding on my house. Watching someone have to redo work really drives it into my memory, as I hate having to do that! Ahh….back when plywood could be purchased on a single income…

I seriously have learned more in an hour than a year working on fixing up a house I'm looking to flip. You're really great at teaching. That's for sure!
Thank you Jon. Happy to share!
Thank you for your time and effort in these videos for us DIY ers
happy to help cheers!
Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY thank you!!

"Now hit the damn thing" well spoken words....
When it comes to overlaps, I was taught overlap away from doors. so when you are at the door and look you don't see the overlap.
Or, away from the road...
I usually overlap away from the driveway. In a back yard I overlap away from the the deck.
This is fine as long as the wall doesn't get regular high wind and rainstorms. Anyone who hasn't done siding before doesn't even notice the overlaps on vinyl siding.
This Guy should open a Carpenter's School or something. I'd gladly pay the tuition.
