As you accurately stated at the beginning, vinyl siding is not a water barrier, that function of the system belongs to the house wrap. Proper flashing is the key to success in water management. With that being said your work is impeccable, a true craftsman, and going above and beyond “code” is an honorable behavior!

Excellent instructor I learned so much watching this. After viewing this and a couple of your other videos I went outside to look at the add on section of my house that was done with vinyl siding. Man the people that put my vinyl siding made so many mistakes. Over lapping the vinyl siding from both directions on the same wall. Putting the nails in too tight causing the vinyl siding to look wavy. Your instructions are so detailed and informative. Thank you so very much!

Project came out perfect, so thank you so much for your instruction, you are awesome, really appreciate you. @@BWoody914 There should be housewrap already on before you install the J channels. That will prevent water from coming in contact with the wood. Shannon has foam insulation for leveling uneven surfaces on top of the housewrap in this video. 😉

“Snug” on the nailing and adjusting the fit will improve results. The J channel tends to move away from the frame with age. Initial “snug” nailing keeps them holding against the frame. Great advice as always. Thank you.

Cynthia Mahlin my vinyl siding makes a lot of noise when it’s windy outside. Is this normal for a newly built home? Or did the builder do a poor install job?

    • @cynthiamahlin4815

Ayoub Farid Noisy siding would indicate a failure to properly secure the vinyl to the underlying structure. I would have it checked by a qualified person. Also, you can view other videos on this channel for specific information.

There's a better way of doing miters. Instead of cutting your miter from the end of your side pieces, cut them about an inch and a quarter from the end, on the back side, make a line squared to the short end of the miter and make a cut, then cut off the back side completely and also cut the round part of the front side. So what you end up with, is an L-shape rain tab that's about 2 and a quarter inch long that will slide nicely inside the front side of the other J-channel. Once it's nailed in place, your corners will be locked together. I learned this trick here on youtube a few months ago and it works great.

I'm adding a pergola to my vinyl sided home. Installation requires a ledger board to connect the main pergola beam to. This will be under the soffit by 10 inches. There shouldn't be much rain driven up into this area, so will J-channel on all 4 sides be adequate. All of the windows directly below this area are done this way.

Excellent video! Shannon does an outstanding job of explaining how to install J-Channel around windows. His other vinyl siding videos are equally as good. I used his instructions to install the vinyl siding on my house and the result was a very professional job even though it was my first time with vinyl siding installation. I wish I could upload a picture of the end product to prove my point.

Cool same here George about to do a 2000 sq ft house. Glad I got windows with the J channel option! Will do drip caps on them anyways.

Very informative and nice technique. I plan to do an old shed with new windows before messing with the house! 🙂

Installed a garage exhaust fan and need to J-channel around the flap in the back. Fortunately it's under a patio roof however I still want to get this as best as possible because I may be doing this in other areas of the house that are directly exposed to rain.

Extremely useful video here four years later, thank you! I've searched for the following question online but all results are when j-channels are installed vertically. Is there a best practice for when you have to overlap and extend a j-channel on a horizontal run? For example, I have my 12' stick but need to go another another 4' yet. Same notching and overlap technique for vertical runs but it doesn't matter which piece slides into which on a horizontal? Thx!

Ya basically notch one end by about an inch to fit inside the end of another. If they are horizontal it really makes no difference which one to notch
