I’m not a “siding guy” specifically but a tradesman can always respect another man’s craftwork. Your comment about your employee coming to you with a tip is so true. Even as a foreman anytime one of my guys had a great idea I ALWAYS made sure to give them the credit.

@@NWIVeteranConstructionOut of my whole house soffit I have about 10 ft on the back porch where the soffit was cut maybe a 1/4 in to short and does not hold in the lip of the inner channel to keep it from sagging. Any idea of a easy fix without tearing that 10 ft section out and replacing it with little longer pieces. I don’t want to do that because the other sides are screwed in and are covered with the fascia trim.
Thanks for the tips,, I've been watching Your videos, along with a few and others and they have been very helpful in my process. I've done automotive repair for 30+years, so fixing things is a no brainer. So far this summer my teenage sons and I have removed all siding, wrapped and taped the house, added 1.5in Foam boards, with 1in foam and 1/2 osb,, 5inch wide ,bucks around all windows but not doors. Didn't want to extend interior jambs on doors. But extra window sills,,, you bettcha. We used 1in thick vinyl 4in trim around all windows, I trimmed a rabbit from backside, for clearance over nailing flanges of windows, so the other 2/3 of back of trim board sides Flat against window bucks for good square corners and seal. I then used 3/4 vinyl trim boards on their side, as a picture frame around exterior doors about 2 3/4 in out from wall. So after the foam and siding they sit 1/4 in proud of J-channels. Looking forward to the utility savings from the extra insulation, and a new look. Going from white to Monogram Tuxedo with White trim. If you are doing a siding job anyway,,, the extra cost of adding the insulation, has been about $1750 on a 1400 sq ft ranch. That extra R-7.5, plus a way better air seal to the home, should get me that money back in a few years,, then savings every year after.
After 28 years of roofing and siding, I finally went out and got a set of padded over the shoulder suspenders for my tool belt.......Man I felt like a brand new guy. they are worth it, even the cheappos from Harbor freight works. Your body will thamk you. good videos man.
New to the channel. I'm an upcoming contractor/handyman and just started roofing. Done it in the pass by watching your videos. I now have a few new ways of doing things more efficient which makes more money. Thanks for posting these videos. I'm thinking of doing videos in the near future once I get more settled in with running a business. Thanks for the content keep it up.
Besides learning a method for trimming around the window your advice about being open to suggestions or advice from employees or fellow workers no matter what your level of experience is a very good piece of advice and if more bosses and company big wigs would use it I feel more companies would have better quality work and more efficient.

Don't understand haters for this channel. If you don't agree with something instead of just hating why not state the way you do it and explain why you think it's easier and better or why the other persons way is wrong. The end result can be the same but one persons way may be more efficient and easier to learn. That is what these videos are supposed to be for in my opinion. Veteran Construction seems to be a program that knows what their doing and would be open to new ideas and probably try them at some point to see if it's better and let us know. I work on my own house a lot doing remodeling things which is not my occupation but I do enjoy it. I watch many videos about whatever I'm working on to learn how I can do it best and right for my abilities. No hate needed.
Wish I could've worked on a crew like this when I was young. Imagine the experience Boy Cub is getting! Life long!

Crazy i found your video the same week we're siding a house in willoughby on kirtland chardon road down in your neck of woods ..the company i work for is out of saybrook . Its a old brick house were doing down there ..we tore down all of the red brick and had to drill and tapcon lat boards to the cinder block for our vinyl .. Keep up the good work. Im always down to learn more tips and tricks ..you can always sharpen your craft no matter how long you been doing it
You should always start with a full piece and then do 3 foot cut back stair steps! It hides the vertical lines where your overlaps are a lot better! Then when you get up to the window you run just straight ones of course. You will not waste because whatever you cut off you can start on the another wall! Not saying this to be a smart ass but you hang Vinyl siding .you don't put it on. The nail has to go in the straight and you should be able to slide it back-and-forth in and out away from the wall toward you and back to the wall. You should never pull up on it when you know it locked .It should just float .You hang it put a nail in the middle and work your way out And it will come out straight every time. 22 years in the game. Love your roofing videos learned a lot from you.

I like the white corners with the siding. It's a sweet contrast. Most keep it all the same colour but I think it looks much better, providing you have white windows, white soffit and facia..

I use a special tool that punches out the siding to create a lip that locks the siding in under the j channel under the window. Love it!

Know this is old but hoping you see this. Lost on what to do with j channel on front false gable to the front eave. It is a manufactured home and has a false or fake gable at the front of home. The gable eave is out 12" and matches perfectly to the front Eave. Like this _________/\________. My problem is I am lost on how to overlap or install the jchannel at the bottom edges where the gable slope meets the front eave and have it look neat. I truly learned a lot watching your videos and thank you for all the time and effort you take to share your experiences.

A helpful trick on making crooked windows look straight is when wrapping window sills, you can play the aluminum wrap up or down before pinning the wrap around. Works great.
I basically do most of the work on site the same as you lol except for clamping multiple pieces before cuts and the take out and keep concept which is super useful.

Dude!! Cut the back of your j all the way around to your inch or so extra mark when doing your bottoms and top of sides. When you fold your tab down it seals the corner anyway. That extr you have on the back is just in the way. Good video bro

Thing about gaps is. If it’s 85 degrees full sun on the south side you can almost slam it. If your siding in Alberta on a cold cloudy Day on the south side you need 3/4” minimum. Just use your discretion I say.
When I do Hardie I just butt them even in winter that shit never expands it shrinks a little. I noticed all my hardie trims have gaps 6 years after install even When I slammed them in the winter.

Van Mark makes a very nice siding cut table, will cut angles down to a 3/12 pitch gable end.

I did my first siding job DIY on my home. It is very labor intensive with measuring three times and cutting once. Didn't use insulation. It turned out pretty good. After you get the hang of doing around windows and doors, it gets easy, but still very tedious.
It is why it costs a lot to have it done. 😎

A little hint when siding under a window like this install a 12" piece of ice & water shield at bottom of window that extends 6" past lower window corners before j-channel & finish channel is installed, that way when you get to the point you are in this video the ice & water shield can go over the lock of the next to last piece under the window and cut back then put the piece that you show in this video, this will truly stop water from leaking behind siding when water rides j-channel to the bottom of the window, also tape your seams on fan fold

Thank you for this video. I want to avoid the situation when I have to cut a portion of the siding under the window because I can install the window at the proper calculated distance. Question - what would be the height of the installed ten sidings?

Thanks for all the info. Been watching lots of siding vids and yours are the best so far. I do have a question I haven’t seen the answer to yet. What parts get nailed down firm. I know all the siding needs to slide. J channel around windows are tight. But what about corners and the j channel that runs at the top next to the f channel. And f channel. So many parts here. Im getting ready to put up 10 squares. A shed and an addition on my garage. Would like to do it right the first time. Thanks

First vinyl video i have watched that has actual installers on it. You miter your J on windows, which it seems no one else on youtube does. I only suggest you not cut your nailer off that J running down the side, let it come over the bottom, just cut the edge instead so you can still fold you flap around the corner. Water runs downhill, always keep that in mind so you don't want a possible water catch anywhere. i am happy to see you use a crimper, no one on youtube does, lol. Just so you know, if you measure to the bottom face of the finish trim, you just need to add 5/8" to get the proper fit. I hope that made sense to you, it's easier to show then it is to tell. I don't use a speed square either, and those people with a grinder make no sense. And yes, just cut where the siding is, no need to make a table. I'd love to send you a video of me cutting the J for window and door cuts, you'll end up using it and you'll understand the whole point. When you where putting that undercut into the window J, if you look you'll see the miter hung up on the siding, my way that never happens. For those who didn't catch it, near the end when it is sped up, you see that guy installing the window stalks. He backed up and looked around the corner, that was to make sure the corner lined up in case you had to make an adjustment. on your garage wrap, make the side pieces longer so you can bend an inch around the corner(the top) so when you put the top piece on, you don't have to caulk, it will be sealed.

You should make videos on the important things like how to snap chalk lines for starters how to j around windows properly with drip caps maybe measuring off your soffit line to keep your siding level

My Son installed my siding..he used screws.. it is so wavy. I will remove it..maybe use furring strips as it's a mobike home..any tips. He used a ton of screws..caulk around windoes?

Have you had any problems tucking the factory edge under the nailer? About a year ago, manufacture instructions (can't remember which brands, berkshire or KP maybe? They stated to not let lap tuck under nailer flange. Since we quit tucking, our laps and movement seems much better. We've been overlapping 1" -1 1/4". What do you think?
At 14:59 would bug the hell out of me. Noticed it several times during video, the siding is not level under J channel far window. J channel not nailed right on both windows.
Prior to placing your starter strip do you see where you're going to land under the windows with your sil trim, Im doing my own homw and found that I should have adjusted my starting point so I dont land in a shitty spot , I adjusted my sil stips down a little to work
What's that punch tool that you used under the wundow do, dimple the siding? I haven't done vinyl since the '90s and don't recall ever using one of those...

Is it recommended to blue fin tape the j channel to the house wrap before installing the vinyl siding?
You only need 1/4 gap for expand and contract. 3/8 if in colder environments.
I'd agree with that. We shoot for center though and that gives you a lot of play in your cut pieces

Get 2 or 3 horses, a 2x12, 12 ft long and screw a 1x3x5 1/2 feet to the back in from each end. Working at a standing height is easier and faster, the 12 foot long 2x12 keeps the siding from sagging........ the 1x3 keeps it from falling off the back of the 2x12.

I never thought of using the crimpers below the windows, I was taught to cut the nailer off the notched our piece and so it’s stronger..crumpet works just as good?

Hi brother builders. I bought an old p.o.s. house. It's about 100 years old. The previous owners took every shortcut, and did only cosmetic work, without repairing framework, waterproofing, or even wrapping underneath. It's a slab on grade, no crawlspace, and even partly below grade. It has vinyl siding, poorly installed.
Basically I have to rebuild the whole house without tearing it own and going from scratch. I have to do this work by myself and on a limited budget. I have many different experiences in renovating, no siding experience. A lot of trowel work, framing and painting. I'm retired now on a minimal pension.
Any tips you or your fans can give me, especially money saving tips, would be greatly appreciated. Can I reuse some of the old vinyl? Have you got any videos to guide me? Mostly, I'm wondering how to connect from the slab below grade, waterproofing, and doors, which are flush on grade.

Outside of the videos I can't offer you much without being there. As for reusing vinyl, I doubt it. Anytime you try to match existing vinyl it never looks right if the existing has any wear on it

Whats the purpose of crimping holes for the piece under the windows if you didnt nail it down?
The undersil Trim which the siding gets locked into, is nailed in.
It looks like water that runs down the side pieces of J-channel of the window would run right behind the piece of siding that is below the window (the piece that has the cut-out section). Am I missing something? I'm not questioning the professionals in the video, just trying to DIY something and don't exactly understand how this is supposed to work.

Instead of using a wood blade spun backwards, use a plywood blade spun backwards, it cuts a lot better, especially where I live in Maine doing siding in the winter! 🇺🇸🤔

What does siding pay by the hour there for someone who is fast and good and can run a brake and wrap windows correctly lol just wondering we are thinking about making a moveso just seeing g what the pay avg is I'm near Detroit Michigan I get 25 but avg here is around 17 an hour
How about using saw horses and some 2 x 6s and make a cut table, and with two guys , you can mark that piece in place, then measure up from the lower lock to get your 5 inches
I couldn’t agree more, when I started roofing and siding, I was taught by some great old school guys, the first thing they said was have your own tools and tool belt, carry whatever you need to do that job, it’s faster and your never wasting time looking for things, I have my own business for thirty eight years and I never loan my tools to anyone, I tell no WHERES your tool belt, it just pisses me off,
I tell my guys if your belt isnt on and full of tools your not on the clock. Dead ass serious and they know it

My walls are a little over 24 ft. I am having to cut 3 seems . How would you run the siding on a straight wall that is over 24ft?
You have to stagger it. But you also might not be able to start with a full piece... I have a stagger formula, but it's currently unavailable at the moment. The 4 Staggers that work the best are 36", 30", 24", 20". I would try a 30" stagger first, but put your first piece up on the wall and mark out where the Staggers will be if you continue to take 30" off, then, hold up a full piece to those marks you made on the wall, and make sure that it never lands closer than 8 inches to the corner post (or any other termination points like j channel around a window or a door) there's an entire science to it lol if you try 24 or 30 inch and they don't work, you have to try another. Nobody likes those false factory ends you have to create when a piece doesn't quite make it to a corner
If you email me the exact total length of your wall I can tell you what stagger to use as long as your siding is 150" total in length and give me the exact number from corner post to corner post and no windows or doors are in the way.

Hey man, I'm part of a crew contracted on siding a whole couple residential developments. We mainly use snips and the circular saw jig for our siding. Are you able to recommend a more efficient way to make cuts while I'm up on our stages? Maybe a battery grinder with a concrete blade to prevent melting? Or a little 12v cutoff saw? I know snips always work, but I've become precise and now I want to blow my boss out the water with efficiency as well. Thanks for your time if you get to this comment, your siding tips helped me get ahead of the curve when I started this job.

I use aluminum snips and if it's wintertime then usually i use multi tool
@@Mrbargais do you find any benefit to using the multitool compared to a simple angle grinder with a cutoff wheel or something of the sort? I have just started using a grinder in ottawa as temperatures hit -30C, but if a multitool is any benefit I would switch
@@tydizzle369 i never Used grinder to cut siding. But I like multi tool because it's handy, and it sounds safer to use than grinder. But I can't compare them because idk
