I seeded 100% Kentucky Bluegrass and got what I deserved

- Are you thinking about seeding KENTUCKY BLUEGRASS? Before you do, there are a few things you should know..
Kentucky Bluegrass takes forever to germinate and establish itself. Typically it can take up to 21 days for KBG to germinate and then it goes through a phase called sprout and pout where it will not grow for an extended period of time immediately after germination.
Also it takes longer to wake up in the spring time following winter. It is the end of April here in Chicago and my Kentucky bluegrass is still dormant. I applied 1 dose of granular fertilizer and one dose of liquid fertilizer so far and im starting to see some slight green up happening. For reference, my back yard which is mostly tall fescue has been actively growing and I have mowed it 3 times already.
Ever since sowing 1 pure cultivar of Kentucky bluegrass, I noticed other types of grasses invading my lawn. KBG has a very distinctive look and other grasses will stick out like a sore thumb in a pure KBG lawn. So if your neighbors allow there grass to grow long and start to grow seed heads.. Be prepared for that grass to start invading your lawn.
Kentucky Bluegrass is a very thirsty grass type. A Kentucky Bluegrass lawn needs at least 1 inch of water per week. During the hot summer weather it may need up to 2 inches or more per week. The reason it needs more water is because KBG has a much shallower root system then any of the other cool season grasses.
Another common is with Kentucky Bluegrass is fungus disease. A few common diseases that attack it are leaf spot, powdery mildew, and rust. I have powdery mildew currently and didn’t even know it until I decided to take a closer look. Fungus can be hard to identify, so if you are sowing Kentucky bluegrass make sure you keep an eye on it. Fungus usually has brown, white or damaged spots of grass with clear outlines. Don’t immediately go and start spraying fungicide if you see this… Wait to see if the spot gets bigger over a few days. If it turns out to be fungus, treat the area with a lawn fungicide. Many fungal diseases are made worse by bad watering habits, especially the fungus leaf spot in the the spring and fall when temperatures are between 60 and 80 degrees. Do not irrigate at this time unless you absolutely have to. Water during the day so the water has time to dry from the grass leaves.
The reason Kentucky is the KING of cool season grasses is its ability to spread and repair it self. The fact that it can spread and heal itself when damaged is the reason many professional sports teams seed it in their fields. It spreads underground through the production of rhizomes. Rhizomes are stems that spread horizontally right under the ground. Each rhizome produces a new sprout every couple inches along its stem from which a new Kentucky bluegrass plant forms and sprouts.

Hey I didn't know you were from Chicago. Last week we had an inch of snow and then I mowed the lawn the next day!
I have to admit, when it started snowing on you, I laughed a little . 😂
SMH.... this is too much man!
Me too 😆🤣
Yep. Typical Chicago weather!
I was just thinking the same thing!!
@@TheLawngineer lol bogus
you know you're a dad when you watch RUclips videos about a guy talking about his lawn, you're fully interested, and thumb up the vid.
From a one dad to another dad... I appreciate the thumbs up!
Or a guy with no kids that enjoys learning shit 🙄
I love my KBG. I seeded 35 years ago. It's the prettiest lawn on my street.
It’s pretty!
I’ve been watching lawn youtubers for years and this video was a good reminder there’s still plenty for me to learn. Keep up the good work!
Thanks matt much appreciated.
Im still learning as well, especially when it comes to kbg
Hey George, just wanted to say I’m happy to have found your channel. I’m from Northwest Indiana which is pretty close to your location. All of this info I’m finding on your channel is going to help me out a lot. I’m just now starting to get into taking care of my lawn and learning about different types of grasses. This fall I’m going to be overseeding KBG and your channel is basically going to be my go to. Thanks a lot brother!!
- Chris
Great video. You did an excellent job of highlighting the challenges of KBG. Now we all get to wait for the reward of a mature KBG monostand lawn. I am looking forward to watching how the lawn progresses through the seasons.
Thanks theo! did you seed kbg as well?
I overseeded with kbg last fall. Looking good so far this year. At first i wasnt sure if you knew your stuff; then i saw the dad sneakers... you got me. You know lawns.
Great content George! Love love love my KBG. When it's in full growing season it looks SPEC-TACK-ULAR 😎 Special guest appearance is always a plus - Jason is a good guy!
Thanks Jayme! Appreciate the vote of confidence!
Thank you man! Now I don’t feel alone!
I will sleep better tonight knowing I didn’t do something wrong!
I’m 1 hour outside of Chicago, I will subscribe! Keep it up!
No problem neighbor!
Did you do a reno as well?
Great video George. Appreciate all the info and breakdown. Great job with editing too !! Nicely done brother !!
Thanks scott! much appreciated! had a good time makin this one!
Hey thanks for the well articulated information. It’s always easier to watch the entire video when the host isn’t rambling on and on about the same stuff. So TY!
Glad it was helpful!
I'm not man enough to grow KBG haha! Jason is a cool dude, love his content! Great video.
I’m starting to think I’m not as well 😂😂😂
Had a good time w ol jayman, can’t wait to see him carry the torch!
Thanks, Chuck!!
I've taken out 50% of my grass to install garden space, but I still watch these videos.
nothin wrong with that:)
and thanks! a green thumb is a green thumb! we love all plant life:)
Despite the issues kbg has I know you’re gonna baby it and make it look like a mono stand master piece. Can’t wait to see it when it fully wakes up! 👍🏼
Yessir you already know the deal!
What a !!! GREAT !!!! Video. Thank you So much for sharing all your tips and tricks.
No problem Joann! Thanks for watching!
I just love your background music. Then I enjoy you talking about the grass.😆
Thanks tonya! my friend produced some of the score in this video, its awesome!
this video was funny and very informative! I went with TTTF for my lawn in Massachusetts last fall...its nice and green already!
Thanks Jeff! My fescue in the back is doing great as well
If you haven't already been using it, you're going to love that Multi Purpose Plus! Ol Jason w nice purchase! Congrats!
Haven’t tried it yet but the lawn is already looking wayyyy better:)
@@PrincessCutLawnCare what is that for? And when should it be used?
@@OscarRodriguez-ln2om it contains a little bit of everything.. nitrogen, potassium, iron, seaweed, hydrotain and micros.
Can be applied anytime during the growing season
Super top notch production quality.
Thanks! Much appreciated, been trying to up the quality.
Wife watched this with me. Told me I remind her a lot of KBG
Lol oh no!
My wife prolly thinks the same about me!😂😂😂

Great video! KBG is the Bermuda grass of the cool season lawns!
Thanks dude 😊
And yes it is
First lawn video I've seen where it spontaneously started to snow. Thanks for the video.
Killing it lately George!
Thanks bra!
Great job buddy! I seeded Jumpstart KBG this past fall. It’s the quickest sprout and pout KBG. It blended real well with PRG I used.
Thanks dude! Who makes it?
Nice to see Jason at the end there! I’m actually considering a renovation with MVS 365SS... lots of good things to consider in this video!
Had a good time with jason!
Heard alot of good things about that seed!
excited to see your results if you end up going that route, just gotta be prepared for a few things
I miss my bluebank kbg but man is it nice to have the fast growing and striping ability of perennial rye grass
That prg you got looks great bro 😎
KBG stripes if you have a reel mower :)
Your channel is on 🔥🔥
Thanks bro, it’s been a fun couple weeks
So that is where he got the mower from. SWEET!
Lol yuppp

thumbs up just for the snow. Coming from Michigan I can appreciate it.
It’s a hard knock life for us Midwesterners!
Thanks for the like and tunin in!
Great video George. Seeding KBG definitely sounds like a labor of love. :-)
Thanks dude!
Kbg is the Bermuda of the cool season grasses lol
I’m loving those CWB’s! I overseeded KBG in Fall and yeh, it was a pain to watch it take forever to sprout and watering so much to get it started. However, in comparison to the PRG I do every year, this year is hands down the best it has ever looked!
That is great to hear! cant wait till this kbg starts takin off!
I love your channel!!!
KBG is the labor of love.
mostly labor for now haha
Great vid george!
Thanks Ned!
Great video, my friend! KBG is the best for sure but man it is high maintenance. These warm temps will have it waking up in no time. Jason picking up the Greensmaster! Awesome!
Thanks bro! the GM is in a better home now:)
Got a surprise comin in the mail soon:)
Excellent video as always bro!
Thanks dude much appreciated:)
I live in Sacramento, Ca and completely seeded the backyard in early March this year. I used Bolero seeds (Delta Bluegrass Co.). It’s getting there, but still a ways to go. So far it’s been mowed twice. After this last mowing Bolero Lawn Food was added. I’m just really hoping the roots get established before summer starts. We are already seeing some early 90’s weather.
How is your bluegrass looking now? I live in Sacramento too. My tttf is doing great in the front yard, considering going another route in the backyard just for fun
Nice video, love the KBG too ... Great B-Roll.
Thanks sensei!
Great video George. I currently have common KBG in my salad bar of a lawn. I plan on over seeding with a mix/blend this fall to introduce better cultivars of KBG. We'll see how it goes. From what I've read/watched/listened to, there is a big difference in KBG cultivars from one to the other almost as big as species of grass. The type I am over seeding with is a blend of compact types (I believe America and "Aggressive"; MVS 365ss) so my common should come up in early spring with my PRG and fine fescue while the compacts will take longer but look great in the Summer vs the common type.
Thanks Greg! Thanks for sharing!
Haven’t heard of the aggressive and America, gonna have to look into those.
I’ve been hearing about the MVS a lot lately and I know the bears use it in soldier field... sounds like a solid seed!
Good luck w your project!
Weekly foliar N has been amazing to apply also keeps for a super consistent growth :)
Most of my neighbors have Kentucky Blue grass and it is still dormant. I have some other grasses mixed in some rye and tall fescue I think along with Kentucky Blue grass. My mixed grass is mostly filled in and is greener than my neighbors. And like you said if different kinds of grass inadvertently get mixed in it doesn't look strange. I haven't had any problems with disease or with the drought in the area, although the Kentucky Blue Grass is a heat resistant variety. Thanks for the information you provided. There are different advantages and disadvantages to the different cool season grasses.
Bro. Your camera quality is awesome! Also, great video🤙🏼
Awesome! Thank you bro! Been working on upping the video quality, appreciate you noticing:)
Great stuff man, awesome the 1000 went to another good home!
Thanks bro, im sure you could appreciate some of the hardships in this video:)
The GM was too much equipment for me to handle on my tiny lawn so i downgraded to a more homeowner unit simular to yours!
The Gm is in a much better place now, doing what its mean to do:)
Keep up the good work!
Thanks Ian! Much appreciated 🙏
Loved the video!
Thanks Chad!
At 9:50 I love cool season lawns, can't wait for more.
I love Kentucky bluegrass
2 of my favorite lawntubers
Thanks David! and your one of my favorite viewers/friends! appreciate you always stopping by and saying hello:)
@@PrincessCutLawnCare i planted scotts Provista kbg last year. Provista is a dwarf grass. It had r months of sprout and pout. I was freaking out thinking it wouldnt germinate. Then i saw jasons video on how not to worry about kbg germination it really chilled me out and was also very very funny.
As for you, you have great content. I always enjoy your videos. I used to till my yard when i renovated. But i always ended up with the worst bumpy lawns. I leRned just recently by you to cut out the tilling. That was grear advice. You are also very entertaining. Very funny.
Hands down Jonathan Green Black Beauty and Kentucky Bluegrass is my favorite.
That stuff is DARK
Thank you for this channel I live in Chicago area too
No problem neighbor!
Good luck w your lawn projects!
great videos, dude. keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
thanks for watching
Thumbs up for the GX in the background
do you have one as well?
KBG all day!!! 🤘🏽 solid video!
You already know!
I live in kentucky. I have kentucky bluegrass and clover lawn. I love it and always get compliments on it. A lot of people cant stabd clover but ive got a good 50/50 mix and let me tell you my lawn pops
Awesome video as always and a lot of great points on being proud parents of KBG. One anecdotal thing I can provide for some additional hope for folks is my KBG held up quite well through last summer despite being quite hot and dry for our area. The greensmaster has already been put to work at 3/16" on the green. Thank you so much for having me down. Ton of fun chatting lawn care and RUclips with you.
Likewise my friend!
Thanks for sharing your experience with the group!
Great video. Until it started snowing I thought you were in front of a green screen. That's how clear your video is lol
lol thanks mike! been working on upping my video quality! thanks for noticing:)
I love my Jacobsen greens king 500 with the groomer. I've had zero issues with it and will cut down to 0.122".
That’s great to hear, never owned one but haven’t heard good things.
Happy to hear yours in working out well
Seeing those Poa Annua patches in your front yard is making my eye twitch lol
I just seeded some snow damage areas with 70% kbg, 30% perennial rye. I think I need to teach my kids how to water when I'm at work.
Lol I’ve learned if I want something done I gotta do it myself😂
Sweet video man. Gotta love that KBG. Mine tends to get leaf spot when it’s cut low, fortunately it doesn’t get those other nasty ones you listed. Not yet anyway. Can’t wait to see your results.
Thanks dude, can’t wait for it to start fillin up.. good news is the mildew is going away!
Great video
Thanks Shane appreciate you stoppin by
watered down skim milk is great at changing the PH level and killing powdery mildew. quite cost effective too.
Really? I believe it… reduces heartburn so makes sense
If you decide to stick with KBG checkout the different barenbrug KBG like their HGT. Only if you drop the mono stand.
I will def do that, i know they make good seed, thanks for the suggestion
With my monostand I used the domyown fungicide subscription and then rotated in some Propi during the heat of summer just for that extra support. Was so nice to just get the subscription delivered and not think about much fungicide rotations.
Did it work? I’ve not had much luck with Fungicides.
Incredible info! Thanks! I bet it's a whole new routine for you using KGB now. Shallow roots was a good tip.
No problem! Def have to be on top of things more, but once it fully establishes.. it'll be worth it!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I bought the "Cool Blue" from Pete at GCI turf. Has KBG and Tall Fescue. Seeded in fall.. Seeing thinning spots this spring. I'll assume the KBG hasn't woken up yet.
It never snows near Chicago...what the heck? 😂🤣😂🤣
Great video George 👊🏼
Pshhhh yeah right!
Thanks Nate! appreciate you stoppin by bud!
pretty cool that luke combs has a youtube channel now
haha ive heard that one before
🤣🤣 every time you would say KBG all I could hear was the KGB 😳....
Lmao I swear I was thinking the same thing when I was editing this 😂😂😂
i have mignight kbg on all my sunny areas. Mazama in my shady spots. year 2 and 3 you'll experience earlier greenup. 1.75" in the backyard , 3.25" in the front yard. I agree it is such a hassle. I'm on year 3 it still doesn't spread as much as id like it to. the pro plugger is king. I just sprayed a propacanasole app ,starting to get warm wet nights.
Had to leave a like bro. Great video
Thank bro! appreciate it
I also have a Midnight mono stand in the front. After 2 full summers, I am thinking of overseeing some TTTF in it because it has just been so much work to keep it looking good. I’ve had fungus several times, usually just rust, and this year when it was waking up I’ve had some pretty heinous sod webworm problems.
No one else around me has these problems in their fescue. When it’s not having issues it’s the best looking lawn around but it is a whiney, needy child. 🤷🏼♂️
Oh no, sorry to hear that! i can already see the issues arising and it hasnt even been one season lol
Good luck bud, hang in there!
I did a few areas of a Midnight KBG monostand starting fall of 2023. I can confirm pretty much everything you've stated as accurate as of this spring (2024). I have some powdery mildew, and am having some trouble areas with shade which are letting weeds creep due to lack of filling in. Despite all its flaws, it has quite a bit of redeeming qualities, but I think ultimately it needs to be paired with something that is shade tolerant, disease resistant, and perhaps longer roots like a fescue to make it less maintenance. If you have any suggestions for pairing it with a similar look, let me know!
Nice channel! I just started getting into lawn care and I’m local to you too!
Thanks!
Im in chicago burbs and just seeded mostly a bluegrass mix this weekend mid/late august. And it got 90 degrees for a little but is cooling down. My grass is moist but not saturated, hopiny to see some germination this week
that's the heaviest fucking beat a lawncare video has had ever
haha thanks bro, my good homie produced it, he has some bangers!
@@jpeggeorge2014 aight cool i'll check him out. is he the guy in the description?
I live probably half-way between you and Jason. I did a very heavy de-thatch and overseeded 17,000 sq. feet of Midnight last fall, killing any tall fescue (Kentucky 31?) with Roundup as I went (there was a lot). This spring, the lawn looks great, but I've got pouty KGB in large obvious sections where all the tall fescue once was -- it's green, and I think it will fill in, but it clearly doesn't match the surrounding lawn.
At the start of this month, I core-aerated and did another overseeding with Midnight. The plan is to do at least one more overseeding this fall with the hope of establishing Midnight as the dominant grass, using Roundup in the fall whenever I find any invading grass. If things won't blend together after a few years, I'll start overseeding rye grass and just give up on the project -- or sell the house. It's always good to have a Plan B and Plan C. :)
Really enjoying your channel. It's nice to have local content.
Wow thats quite the project!
My plan B is the exact same as yours! if it doesnt fill in completely, i will overseed some premium ryegrass this fall.
Keep me updated!
Thanks for sharing:)
You Americans and indeed Canadians and your Bluegrass! You crazy catz, we in the UK see Bluegrass as a weed!!! We don't even think it's a grass. We can't even buy it! Why would you even want it? Rye and Fescue combo, all the way baby! lol.
haha i just overseeded with rye and i am LOVING it
Just did a full renovation on my lawn last fall with Seed Super Store's SS5000 mix (Mazama+Midnight+ Blue bank KBG, Radar chewings fescue, Grand slam PRG) and it's slow to get going here in North Central MA (temps in the 30s at night last week) so I'm getting antsy seeing my neighbors mowing their PRG lawns already.
I know it'll come but I'm dying to get them stripes going!
You and me both buddy!
Your not alone in the struggle!
Good stuff
Thanks 🙏
George in my opinion you have the best produced lawn care vids. What are you gonna use now that the greens master is gone?
Thanks bud that means a lot:)
As far as a mower, I have a special delivery coming any day now..
Stay tuned
Splendid my Friend.
Thanks for featuring my track in there :)
No problem, love that track!
George, we’re not far away and I’ve mowed at least 5 times already but I’m mostly PRG.
I believe it! I was mowing my prg in March last year!
Plus I blitzed my lawn last Oct/Nov with fertilizer so gotta mow twice a week to keep up!
KBG is the best looking lawn when cared for properly for sure. Mine is just waking up.
Yessir! hows the spring seeding going?
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Hard to tell George. I put it down on an already thick established lawn. We just had rain for the first time the other day. Had not rained here for a few weeks. My lawn just really greened up over the last few days. It was spotty green which is normal for KBG in early spring. I have cut it a few times but just once a week. I mowed last Friday night. It rained heavy Saturday night into Sunday morning and just with that it greened up Sunday into Monday and it needed another cut. I cut it last night again. I’m cutting at 1 inch so it looks as if going forward I’ll be mowing twice a week. The reel mower really makes it pop. I’m excited for this season with it being the first full season reel mowing.
Dope video & great info. I got kbg in northern Utah lol
Thanks bro 😎
You guys in Utah know what’s up
Rhizing Moon TTTF is amazing instead of Midnight KBG or at least combined with. Most of the Cons you listed are all non-existent with Rhizing Moon and you get similar color, texture and it’s RTF so the rhizome root structure allow for self healing. Awesome options
Been hearing alot about the rtf latley!
you like it?
I was wondering if the snow was a prop! Crazy spring. 💪
Lol nope, i would never have such a prop. cant wait til all this snow is done!
One of my favorite channels. You do a great job with your content... kudos. Fairly new to lawn care. I have a couple overseeds of TTTF under my belt but I'm ready to kill off part of my lawn for a KBG stand. Can't decide between a mix or monostand. Specifically, SS1100 or Mazama. I'm in South Central PA, so it might require some maintenance but that's ok... it's fun. You have any regrets going with a monostand vs a mix?
Try thanks Dan, much appreciated.
If I could go back I would go with the ss mix. It contains the 2 darkest midnight cultivars with some mazama sprinkled in which will be the kicker that will give you some disease resistance and some shad tolerance.
The ss mix is only a blend of 3 cultivars not like these other mixes that are like the 10+ different types of grass.
In the end you won’t be able to tell the difference between the ss mix and a monostand, go with their mix 👍
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Yeah, I was wondering if I would even be able to tell the difference. I saw pics of a few monostands of Mazama and it looked so dark; a look I would love to achieve. But to your point, the other 2 cultivars in that mix are dark as well. SS1100 it is. Keep up the great work man. Appreciate your content!!
The KBG does take a bit. My test area finally came in good when I spoon fed it every two weeks. It’s will come buddy. Great info for future KBG’ers 😎🌴
Thanks dude. When did you seed your kbg?
September of last year. It was slow until day 55 and I started spoon feeding 18-0-1 GreenePunch. Boom 💥 it took off.
April 5th I put down KBG seed. It just started to come up yesterday in a few spots! Takes way longer to germinate in the spring than when I seeded in the fall lol. My record was 8 days then. Yes, I’m a glutton for punishment. That’s why I love KBG 😂
Sweet dude, i still havent had any sprouts just yet...any-day now! lol hopefully
Bluegrass rye and fescue. Is always a nice blend 😊 🤣🤣🤣🤣💅🏻
I too did the scalping detaching and overseeing. Fertilized, and threw .25” of dirt on it watered like crazy!! August 21st! My grass was freaken amazing!!! But I believe it should be detached once in a while, and reseeded. I planted Johnotan green ultra!! And it looks freaken amazing!!! However I’ve ordered blue panther Kentucky and was planning on lightly seeding it but am worried it might take over!! Do you have any suggestions? I always have the greenest lawn on my side of the fence as Jerry Baker says!!! I just wanted to transition to tall fescue!
Love the video...the intro music was totally mismatched to a lawn care video but I enjoy it. Haha.
Thanks! We are not your average lawn care channel 😄
I sprayed with tenacity and when the weeds are dying the have that white powder residue on them.
Use Whey in a spray bottle for the powdery mildew
Hey bro great video! I just bought a house and was curious on how to take care of brown rings in my yard. I live in NE Florida
Do you recommend fertilizing after an Autumn renovation/over-seeding?
I live in central Alaska. Our front lawn used to be easy getting a golf course color out of it. However, I planted a number of shrubs and trees along the 3 sides years ago. I have noticed for the last few years the grass is late waking up in the spring and during the summer months it doesn't get that beautiful deep green anymore. I'm thinking it's just not getting the sunlight it used to get in the past. Could you recommend a web site I can visit to determine which strain I need to get for reseeding. Many thanks.
