I'm in Southeast Missouri and your information about the transition zone was especially helpful. Right now I have a pretty rough looking tall Fescue lawn and have been wondering about other grass types
@@diggles27 Unfortunately, in the transition zone, we are limited to just a few solid options. Fescue is a great overall option for 3 seasons and will go a bit dormant in the summer (plus the required fall over-seed) and Bermuda is the other best option (my preference) as long as you can live with the winter brown. I just over-seed with Perennial Rye to deal with dormancy.
Pete with gci turf proved KBG can grow beautifully in transition zone when fed and watered.
i put down some Barenbrug on your recommendations and love it....it grows in thick and really green and handled the hot, dry summer like a champ....it is my go-to grass seed and is worth the extra expense......your yard looks great too....thanks for all the great ideas...PS, I live in central NY state, lots of snow in winter and lots of sun and rain and drought in summer...it won't win any awards in Better Homes and Gardens but my visitors always say my yard looks great

I Planted Beranbrug RTF in my lawn on September 1st. Six days later I now have New Sprouts Popping through. Hopefully when this rain passes and the sun comes back out I’ll have new sprout’s throughout my newly overseeded lawn

I live in Texas at the bottom of the transition zone.
Planted Barenbrug RPR Turf Star Ryegrass in fall 2021 and had 5 months straight of 90s to 100+ temp's May 6th -September 28th 2022 and have had a green lawn and still have since planting in 2021 including all winter.
Temps in summer can easily reach 100+ for days on end with nothing but 90s in-between with lows in the 70s and winter temps can get down below zero.
Had a few fungus and grub issues pop up but easily fixed and RPR filled right back in. EVEN DURING THE SUMMER!!
As far as shade, I have areas that get as little as 1-2hrs of sunlight and still have RPR growing there, just takes way longer to thicken up and the germination time in those spots can take up to 3wks before seeing sprouts (patience is key).
So imo it comes down to whether or not you're ACTUALLY taking care of your yard properly and not just saying you are.....
The proof is in the grass lol

Ginja's video does a better job at promoting Barenbrug's RPR than their own video! I probably would have gone with RPR had I seen Ginja's video in July, showing off the dark color and affirming the growing performance. And it's readily available too!

I picked up Berenburg perennial rye (yellow jackets)
I took 100sq ft section of lawn, toiled, and cleared completely the section. Leveled, and planted with added top soil..
Turned out my native tall fescue which was hidden 2” below surface came up with the rye.. it looks great!
Because my lawn is pretty much tall fescue, I dethached, fertilized, and am going to aerate in a few weeks
I’m hoping to fix my existing tall fescue and soil, planning to overseed with the rye

I decided to do a full reno about 15 months ago and because of your initial rpr video I went with that. I've been a grass rat for as long as I can remember always having the best lawn in the neighborhood. Took a week and did perfect prep, applied tenacity and starter fert then seeded. Covered with PM and had germination in 4 days. Came in lime green which worried me but like you say it reacts to liquid biostimulants almost the next day. First summer was fantastic, grows super plush and thick. Almost too much with trying to keep an edge and out of beds is difficult. It fills in amazingly well. Now that it's been over a year I'm not liking it as much and am thinking of pulling it out in the spring and starting over with Black Beauty, Pangea or Hatrick rye. Here are my issues now. I can't cut it lower than 1.5" without it turning brown, it cuts off the whole blade to the root it seems. I put down Prodiamine 65 and it went lime green again. I ran a sunjoe scarifier last week and it ripped out small sections all over the place. It is coming back in slowly but didn't think it would do that. Almost like the rpr roots are not going deep but rather side to side as you mention. I would overseed but having out down barricade it won't sprout. Our growing season here in Oregon will be done come Nov 1 so we will see how it does until then and hopefully come spring it's plush again. I wish I could post pictures to show what I'm talking about. Overall for me and the time I've put into this seed I would give it a 7.5 out of 10. Thanks for posting this update video 🤛
interesting. first off, thanks for sharing your experience. I have yet to put down any pre emergent or herbicide on this lawn other than tenacity. so i couldn't tell you yah, or nah on if that happened to me or not. I have spot sprayed herbicides with little to no issues. as for the rooting, my roots are deep. I'm about 8" with the rpr. my expectations were I would get 4" to 6". before spending the money on another species i would recommend getting a base line soil test to get that fertilizer dialed in / see what's defficient in the soil. commonly when things aren't going well it comes down to that. I do know that several parts of oregon are acidic on the ph scale. sitting around a 5. pumping your ph up to a 6 / 6.5 would be preferred and pretty easy to do using lime in the spring and fall.
Any updates or suggestions? We are in identical situations. OR, also. Did you go Hatrick rye? I’m thinking about doing Fireball and hatrick. Thoughts?

I burned off my lawn a year ago and put in Barenbrug TTTF with KGB and I couldn't be happier. It thick and is nice and dark green. Yes I have total lawn domination.

Just did this with my front yard, no kbg, I did the Barenbrug turf saver, TTTF. I’m at day 21 and it’s looking pretty good. I went a little light on fert and seed in about 25% of the reno. At 30 days I’ll add more seed and fert where needed. Fingers crossed…
@@TravisBAnderson Good luck on it. The color is nice on the TTTF. I thought it would be better and I recently learned it looks 100% better with a more fert. This is a elite seed and it can take(of course water it good). Once it has taken off, put some iron on it, OMG it is beautiful. The dark green is awesome, you have to see it.

thoughts on trouble I am having doing a pre-germination on the Kentucky Blue.. i changed the water out twice a day... after 10 days getting a smell and the yellow coating is now gone from the seed

Awesome Review! I love your videos. What kind of seed would you suggest for Southern Utah? I live in Kanab, right on the border of cool season and transition zone. Hot summers and freezing winters. I bought a house, and the back yard lawn is trash, a bunch of clover, broad-leaf weeds and vole holes. Looking to kill it all off and start fresh in the next 2 weeks.

I got some Barenbrug "sun and shade" mix which I plan to put down in the next week (in Sandy, UT) . . . fixing / filling in places (like "park strip') that didn't work out that well with the spring "renovation." Wish me luck. Hopefully it will hold for many years to come with Utah heat, drought, etc.

Excellent content as usual. I live in North Carolina so we get a good mix of heat and cool weather. I am completely spraying out all my existing grass as it is a mess. What would you recommend for a new lawn in a transition zone? We do not want Bermuda. Considering between Turf Type Tall Fescue, KBG and Per-annual Ryegrass
I’d go rtf tall fescue. The blue is tougher to keep up on and you’ll spend a ton of money using fungicides when it gets hot outside. I’d also consider emerald zoysia

longer grass you could do an awesome mix of blue and rye! the turf blue pro is darker than the turf blue pro hgt. the hgt has barvette in it that is super traffic friendly but not the darkest blend.

The RPR ford knit like a bluegrass, it’s the only ryegrass I’ve ever had that has this quality to it. Also, keeping it at 2” is key to having the best lawn around. Overall it easily competes with elite kbg but the main draw back is season to season up keep, mandatory heavy over seeding so you’re basically installing a new lawn every year if you want to keep the top of line look and feel of the RPR. Overall I’ve been extremely happy with it. For the average home owner I believe this seed is amazing , throw it down, in 10 days you’re mowing and having a great looking yard. Holds up to drought and traffic extremely well

@@davidhires7403 it does spread but it’s not KBG. I actually Reno my lawn with badazzled KBG and hatrick perennial ryegrass. As much as I loved the RPR there’s a limit to it’s darkness. I will say tho for 95% of people, you’ll have a great lawn in 2 weeks. It is ryegrass tho so it die off easier from abuse and traffic
Love it! Supposedly when you cut grass short you'll have shorter roots or less root density. When you use your soil probe do you find that is true and your rooting is decreased relative to longer cut turf?
its a myth about the shorter roots. i've mowed it down to .5" and still had 6" roots with my kbg

I'm about an hour north of NYC and I started using tall fescue on my lawn and this summer was not only a hot summer but a dry summer. We didn't get much rain from Memorial day until the end of August and surprisingly my lawn survived and in fact over the last two weeks or as the days have gotten shorter the grass has rebounded beautifully. Yesterday I overseeded because I knew it was going to rain today and we'll see what happens. The grass seed I used is from a company called Empro and I have been very happy with this seed. I just started getting back to caring for my lawn two years ago and little by little it's starting to rebound and fill in very nicely...the big issue here is that it's very humid which is rough on the grass but the tall fescue held up and I didn't have any signs of a fungus this year which is a good thing.
I am over on Long Island. Give Pennington I try. Its amazing. Put it on Sept 17th and by Monday (8 days later) it was doing great. Today, it almost needs to be cut. I am amazed. I did do Barrenburg last year in spots and love it but they overpriced themselves this year blaming whatever supply chain nonsense. Pennington did not though and the results are mind blowing.
@@ChrisS-if7ev Thanks for the info...the Empro is $140 for a 50 lb bag. It's a good seed but I will give the Pennington a try in the spring. I know they say not to overseed in the spring but I did this year and the seed I put down held up through the summer. I'm sure you have similar issues on LI as we do in Westchester and that is the clay soil which can be tough deal with. Next month I will be putting down some lime to get in there in time for the winter and hopefully getting everything in good shape for the spring time. If there was one issue I had this year, it was with the weeds...lots of clover this year and that was mostly in the backyard.
@@steviem5279 I just ordered another bag of the Pennington it will be here Thursday just to do some final filling in .(Walmart) I am using the Kentucky 31. Its $76 a bag, was $62 over the summer. Still an amazing bargain! The grass seed I put on the 17th and 18th is now a few inches tall and needs to be cut when this rain stops later this week. As for the clay and compacted soil, core aerate and as you do put down pelletized lime and gypsum while all the cores are pulled. This way it works its way into the soil. Gypsum softens the soil and keeps it from compacting. I think that right there will make a drastic difference for you if you arent doing this. This summer in all that heat I forgot to turn on the Mon/ Thurs sprinkler schedule so the sprinklers were only running on Saturday. I couldnt believe I forgot to flip it on (Rachio controller) Oddly with only being watered once a week in that massive heat spell we had this summer my grass held up amazingly well. Especially in the back where its more shaded, the grass was bright green. I am going to say its probably because I core aerated last October and put down the gypsum so the soil is not compacted, its nice and lose and any of the water that did fall on it was absorbed right into the ground. Try it if you havent, core aerate and put down a bunch of the gypsum (and lime). I bet you see a drastic difference after doing so. Dont even waste your money on the "liquid aerators" they are a complete scam. Aerate with the machine where you are actually pulling the cores out.

@@pestandlawnginja I missed the other replies to this post but I actually put down pelletized lime this week to get things started. We didn't have a cold winter this year and it was rainy rather than snowy so I am getting a head start with the lime. But what I have noticed was that the grass seemed to have survived the winter and it's actually green in a good amount of spots, especially the bare areas that I overseeded last fall. In a few weeks I will put down some tenacity and starter fert and then some more tall fescue. I'm really happy with the Tall Fescue, it's a workhorse, that's for sure. The one thing I did notice last fall was that before I overseeded, I dethatched with a thatch rake and here wasn't much dead grass that came up so that's a good thing. Hopefully this year things will look even better.
I love the Barrenburg but with them price gouging so much I picked up 3 bags of Penngton Kentucky 31, finally got the Pennington on Sept 17h and 18th. By Monday it had all pretty much come up. By today, its insane how tall the grass got. Less than 2 weeks. I did pick up some Pennington "The Rebels" for where its shady by a ton of Arborvitae. Yet to put that on but I will in the next day or two. I am just amazed at how well the Pennington did. And 127lbs of grass seed in total all for $40 less than the price of ONE bag of Barrenbrug. As much as I like Barrenbrug, I cant say I will ever buy it again (well maybe if they get their price back down from the absolutely ridiculous robbery price of $240 (Pennington is $62 for the same size bag)

Your Garden / Grass looks really awesome. I love the Pure Seed Areas. But KBG and Rye are also really good to blend. I don´t see that very often in the United States and I wonder why !? In Europe a Standard Mixture for Sport Areas and also pretty good for the Backyard is a Mix of 50% KBG and 50% Rye. It works very well. Greetings from Europe.

depends on the evaporation rates. i monitor the soil. the only thing that matters is how much water is in the soil. i also like to do a preventive fungus treatment.

After watching your first RPR video, I decided to plant a full reno with Turf Star RPR this August. Like you, I’m very happy with it with one exception. My house faces North so I have a 5 foot strip of shade in front of my house. On the area, the RPR is thin and struggling to fill in.
What would you do? Give it more time or more seed? Plant a shade mix in that area?
I’m loving the uniform texture of this grass when I reel mow at 1.5 HOC. Is hate to ruin it with another cultivar.

Great question! I would calculate how many hours of sunlight you're receiving in that area. if its greater than 3 I would find a shade tolerant variety of perennial rye if you want to keep it monostand. If its less than 3 hours you're choices are limited to fine fescue. Just keep in mind most rye grows in bunches. for the most part it should stay contained in your area. other than that you'll most likely need to overseed every spring and fall to help thicken it up.

In the Spring I may look into overseeding with a shade fescue or a shade tolerant Rye like you suggested.
BTW, I really enjoyed this follow up video. It addressed so many of the concerns I may run into with this RPR. Fortunately I’m in WA so heat tolerance isn’t a huge concern plus I also have excellent irrigation. Very cool that you added your friend to the video with his heat story!!!

@@sifularson happy to help. If you're getting zero sun in those areas you may want to consider making it into a planter area for dry scaping or plants that do not require much sun. Most shade tolerant species of grass will need a minimum 3 hours of sunlight as well. kind of a bummer but just is what it is.
Question. Would it be alright to apply organic compost before I aerate?. I can only aerate this Friday. Its going to rain hard on Thursday . That will help with the aeration with the lawn getting rain the day before. Please advise. Thank you
You can. I would still recommend pushing the compost around after you aerate to push it in the holes.
Can I apply Tenasity before or after applying the Rye seed to the Frontyard.

yes, before or after, you're choice. i didn't mix anything with the seed. I have a play list that shows everything i did during this renovation. step by step.
I've got RPR in south Jersey that I planted in the fall. In the fall it looked amazing. So far this year the grass isn't really growing. I see other yards growing in green and full already. I did a soil test and added what I needed to add a few weeks ago, yet no growth yet....except for where the dog has peed. Those spots are not only growing like mad, they are also super full. Does this mean I should add more nitrogen??? My nitrogen level was barely low in my soil test. Nitrogen was at 4.5 and optimal range was 7.0 to 18.0.
Commonly this is a good indication the grass wants more nitrogen. You may also have a fungus. Get in the lawn up close and check the blades. You’re on the right track. Well done

I live north of you up in Ogden. Is it better to apply the Barenburg TTTF with KGB in the fall or spring? Rye, not the Kentucky Blue Grass.
I plan on aerating my yard and applying sand to level it out this fall.
Spring time I would love to apply the new seed, but if fall is better, I can wait.

So far no issues. It does go very very brown once it goes dormant
Living in LI NY is there really anything that will fork for cool and summer? I used BBU that has PR and KBG but still failed from fungus. Maybe if i applied control early that would of helped me out. Did another reno 3 weeks ago try try again!!!
if its failing from seed in its early stages germinating its commonly due to over watering. if its failing later in life due to fungus we need to determine what fungus is prevelent and why. in my lawn I can tell you if I miss a few iron treatments every type of grass will fungal out. lack of iron and zinc is my primary issue. my suggestion is get a soil test and figure out what plant available nutrients your soil is missing.

Grass blades look like needles - height varies between 1.5 - 2.5 inches
When Google or RUclips searching you see so many different responses, so why not ask the Lawn Boss!
i recommend cutting as the grass reaches 2.5" to 3" of height. anything more blocks the sun and effects the new growth.

Ginga! I'm in the salt lake area too. I picked up some turf blue pro with rpr from great basin a couple weeks ago. Do you have experience with it? I'm helping my dad replant his front lawn. It was 70%+ quack grass, so we decided to nuke it with roundup. We keep delaying throwing down seed due to this heat wave. We're hoping to plant this weekend. Hopefully we don't get an early frost! Been overseeding client properties with it for years. With that said. I’ve never personally used it on my own property. Rye and blue traditionally play well together. Both of those varieties have very similar color. The thinner rye grass compliments the thicker blue well.
Don’t stress about the early frost. It’ll grow until the ground temps get below 40 degrees for the season which commonly doesn’t happen until December 5th

Thanks for the update on the RPR. I live in the Sacramento, CA area and would like to convert my lawn to RPR. I am concerned about our summer this year of 100 plus for about 2-3 weeks. We have low humidity and can irrigate two times a week. About 1000 square feet total lawn size . What do you think. Can we make it work ?
I’m in Temecula and did a late spring seeding over real rough soil conditions then missed my weed treatments and got baked in the SoCal sun and drought. I am happy with what I have and I think under better preparation it would be in top shape. I’ll seed again in a couple of weeks. Maybe it doesn’t like the humidity or to sit in water.
RPR is an interesting variety. it will do well in your area if you can keep an adequatee amount of water in your soil. as david mentioned he has experienced burn out. I'm very familiar with temecula and what i've noticed is many yards have dense rocks about 4" to 8" under the soil. makes it difficult to keep a resevoir of water in the soil. watering twice a week is not an issue as long as your upping your watering times to keep the soil saturated.

I bought a bag each of Barenbrug RPR and RTF for my overseed. Do you recommend using both in the same lawn?
they do play well together. turf type tall fescue has many benefits I just prefer the thinner blade grass types on my feet.
Glad to see you back and the full results of your RPR experiment...turned out gorgeous! Did I understand correctly the RPR at a little over an 1" doesn't require any more water than the KBG at twice the height? How much water have you been using weekly during this 100 degree heat wave in Utah recently? And do you think it is possible to maintain KBG in Utah with a weekly watering of between 1-1.25"/week max. Had someone make that claim.
I've been at about 1.65" of water per week. It is possible to maintain 1-1.25"/week max with use of hydretain on a regular basis and use of other bio stimulants.

Has maintaining the shorter cut RPR required more fertilizer or other inputs relative to your KBG in the back? If I recall, I think you said when you kept KBG shorter it required more inputs including water.

I did not water more when I mowed shorter. Tested this out thoroughly. Didn’t matter if I was .5” or 3” it was all the same even through July and august.
The bio stimulants and potassium helped with stress, overall health and the rigidity of the blade of the grass

I did my full RPR reno last year and was worried about the heat and disease here in Columbus, OH. We don't get nearly as hot as Nashville or Utah but I did see minor die off in some hot spots similar to you. What I've had the biggest problem with is disease. I'm on a 15-21 day rotation of three different fungicides. The humidity and rain here wreak havoc on Rye compared to other cultivars in my neighborhood: KBG or TTTF. The fungicide rotation has helped but it's not cheap. Have you run into any issues with disease?
I did! I’ve notoriously gotten melting out disease in my kbg. To no surprise rpr was the same. I’ve had fantastic results using azoxystrobin and increasing my iron and potassium levels. In my case the grass is a bi product of soil imbalance for what the grass needs. More humid climates need to do a preventive treatment.
My suggestion is to soil test and really focus on what elements you’re low in

Just depends on what you’re trying to plant. If you’re doing Kentucky bluegrass, my opinion, is I would plant past October 1st to get the best yield. Rye is much easier and you could plant as late at end of October

I bought a 50lbs bag of Turf Saver RTF last year with Yellowjacket at this time with a Test Date of 8/20 and Sell by Date of 11/21. I’m using the leftovers to fill in some bare spots now. What do you think the germination rate would be? It was tested at 85%. I stored it in the original bag in the garage, nothing special. Nonetheless, I prepped the spots and threw er down. It’s been 5 days and I see some seedlings. Thanks Ginj!

if your humidity is greater than 60% and day time temps above 85 degrees i wouldn't plant this grass seed. The grass can take heavy daytime temps, even above 100. but the himidity burns the grass out fast.

@@pestandlawnginja Yes the humidity at night during late summer and early fall is 99% relative humidity most of the nights. Daytime is anywhere from 40-70. So I would say its pretty hight.

@@lestar83 I would do emerald zoysia. If you don't mind scalping the lawn a few times per season there are some awesome types of bermuda out there.
Bluegrass would be questionable as well with those numbers. If your soil temps over the winter are above 40 degrees i would do a blue-muda , mix of bluegrass and bermuda.
Which one holds up/dies less against dog urine? In the summer i suspect neither holds up.. but what you're saying is, kbg would recover quicker.?

Hi, I live in Chicago and just bought a house and the previous owners had carpet instead of lawn. I removed it already and will intend to grow grass from scratch.. I have absolutely no experience but want to try for myself and at least to invest on a good seed to help with the process.. my question is will this seed work on chicago weather? And do i need to add any kind of pre-emergent before the seeds to prevent weeds? Kind of confused on that part.. im planning on getting some fresh topsoil as well … thank you
this seed will work with chicago weather. I'd be temped to do bluegrass instead. It's a little hardier for winter weather. barenbrug makes a blend called turf blue pro that I really like. I'd mix it with midnight bluegrass to darken it up a tad and make it greener coming out of winter. You can follow my lawn renovation playlist to a T.
Hey Ginja. Just starting out with learning about lawn care. I just put in Barenbrug rpr. Its been about a week and some grass is starting to come in. I took a closer look and see some red grass strands poking through. Is that red thread? Or could it be something else? What would you recommend I do to get ahead of it? I could send a picture if you think it would help?
the red seed heads is a common thing. not commonly fungus. if you're concerned you can use a fungicide during the seeding process. social media is always the quickest way to get ahold of me.

Utah weather has been crazy hot! Doesn't feel like Fall weather will ever come lol. I'm 11 days into my overseed (KGB Turf Blue). Seed in the shaded areas are doing well while areas with full sun aren't showing much progress. Trying to keep the ground moist. Hoping for the best!
the full sun areas make a tough situation for kbg in a heat wave. the biggest issue is keeping it damp at all times. may take up to 3 weeks to germinate.

Same, I live in Utah thinking oh, end of August will be a good time do a lawn reno. Since our secondary water gets shut off Sept 20, it was now or wait until spring. I planted Barenbrug RPR and some spots did well while others that are surrounded by cement and are impossible to keep moist have failed. Did I mention it has been non stop 100+ degrees here for the last week. Mother Nature did not want to cooperate.

Hello Vera. social media is the best way to send pics. The video you're referring too is a great one. lots of pockets in saratoga springs with elevated salt content. the soil enhancer i recommend can be found at IFA or great basin in orem. its a combination of gypsum and humates. should be applied heavily 10to 20lbs per 1000 sqft on the first application and then you can lower it in half every other month after the intial.
With Zenith Zoysia, if you cut an established stolon or rhizome, it will shift from a daughter plant to a mother plant, and start shooting out its own stolons and rhizomes as if it was grown from an individual seed and it was an individual plant. Does this RPR do this if you cut these roots with the dethatcher/scarifier? As far as drought recovery, when my Zenith Zoysia lawn starts looking thin and wimpy from lack of rain, to where it totally looks like that section is not even Zoysia, I can water that area for 45 minutes to an hour, and within 3-4 hours, the blades of grass are rehydrated and full again, and you can't hardly tell it was feeling puny earlier in the day. I've not pushed it to the point that it looks almost dead or dormant from lack of water, but I love how fast it bounces back with water. My front lawn is 5,000 sq. ft. and my rear lawn is almost 10,000 sq. ft., so it would be a bit costly to install an irrigation system like yours. RPR may not be optimal for the transition zone (I'm in central VA), but I don't recall seeing any dormant lawns around in the winter like my Zoysia, so I have to assume cool season will work as well as can be expected in the transition zone. Loved the update!
The rpr will eventually do it but….. it’s super super super slow by comparison to warm season lawns. This type of grass is also not drought tolerant. It has to stay hydrated. If it goes brown longer than a week it dies.

Did pretty much the same journey as you mate and have the same feedback pretty much, I was worried about it being hard to walk on but it's soften than the grass I had before. Thanks for the inspiration dude :) the only thing I am still to find out is how it will survive the Swedish winter, people say it will die, so we'll see :)
right on Sam! Our local temps don't get terribly cold. we get down once in a while to -5F but for most of the winter we are around 15-25F at night and 30-40F daily. I've had zero issues coming out of the winter. Let me know how it goes for you. it would make for a great video for all of us to watch if you document it.
What's the difference between Barenburg Turf sense athlete field vs Barenburg RPR (New to grass stuff) Truf sense is wayyyyyy cheaper at 25 - 5lbs could they be the same?
I personally don't know. barenbrug is good at responsing to messages. I would hit them up.
Thoughts on their 20 % hgt turf blue 80% rpr? I'm in northern illinois and told ryegrass may be troublesome as a single stand.
It's a great product. my only issue is, i believe, that the hgt blue mix will eventually crowd out or against the rpr. this may be 10 years down the road and not initially. I've seeded it on many many lawns and they're all beautiful. you really won't notice the difference until you mow below 1".
@@pestandlawnginja this is the answer I needed. I don't plan to reel mow the back, so 1.5 is probably the lowest this will see. I think I'm going to take a shot at it.

For cool season you could do rtf tall fescue if you don’t mind a wider grass blade. Other than that I’d do empire or emerald zoysia

Hey Lawn Ninja, I live in Colorado similar to your climate. I'm going to be overseeding my KBG in about 10 days. How do think this combo will look. I can't mow at an inch as my KBG just doesn't hold up to the heat in some spots. Do you think with both mixed 2" will look OK or should I go with Jonathan's Dark tall fescue mix? I have a very lot and water is getting expensive. I could cut my backyard to an inch to 1.5" since it faces East. Front gets backed in the afternoon from the West at 5000 ft. Any advice would be great! Thx!!!
Hi daniel. I'm not a huge fan of fescue so my answer is this. the mix is fantastic. especially at 2" on up to 4". just keep in mind the heat in your area has a little to do with the burnout but its not necessarily the grass thats the issue. its your sprinkler coverage. your climate is just about the exact same as what I have here in central utah. my elevation is 200ft shy of being a mile high. our humidity levels are the same. ground clay is the same, ph of the soil.... the same. I lived in littleton for a few months and know the denver and colorado springs area very well. Love the idea of a blue mix with rye. works great. Hope that helps.

yes, but.... keep in mind rye doesn't like to be without water for longer than a week. it'll completely die out. the blue can handle drought situations up to 4 weeks.

I really need an expert to come look at our lawn and really tell us what we should do. You're in Utah I'm in Utah. Do you by chance do that sort of thing? Our backyard is pretty much a blank canvas but muddy as all hell in the winter. Looking for something that is drought tolerant but also nice on the feet and holds up to a dog.
lawn assessments can be done but it sounds like you're starting from scratch. the idea of a drought tollerent grass is commonly misunderstood as "uses less water" andd stays green. that doesn't exist. bluegrass is the most drought tollerent as it can go to the brink of death and come back within 3 to 4 weeks once you start watering again. meaning it can be stressed for about 8 weeks before dying.
As for grass that holds up well with animals your best bet is a wider blade grass called fescue. barenbrug sells one called rtf tall fescue that is a darker green and very healthy variety. Has 20" roots, so if you're near the lake or natural springs it has a better chance of finding ground water than the traditional bluegrass we use in the valley. Hope that helps.

heat is an interesting subject. i went over it in the video. its fine with heat. its not fine with lack of water. the repair...... well..... its an patch job seeding which is fairly easy. another benefit of the rpr.
How much weed percentage has, also the inner matter?
the weed percentage on the bag I received was less than 1%, no other inert matter, its all seed. some bags I saw went as high as 1.5% weed percentage.
How come you went back to rotary?
i knew for a few subjects like cut quality and height of cut its more relatable for the majority of people. The other issues include, wanting to be able to test out the new products and really having experience with the newer rotary models.

Yes. The major issue you’ll face is with heavy snowfall causes snowmold. Be on top of that and you’ll be pleased

The RPR is great but over seeding every year is a must. The ROR doesn’t hold up over season to season. But the first season is maybe the best grass I’ve ever had, to say it’s not inherently dark isn’t true. Its just as dark as my midnight kbg
the color is relative to the soil contents. my area, like many is very low in iron chelate. which is why its going to be much lighter in my soil and others.
Why do you have to overseed rpr if it grows horizontally?
