I've HAD ENOUGH of Bluegrass...

  • There's a part of my lawn that I don't talk about very much and maybe there's a good reason why?
    The area outside of my fence has never been the absolute best in terms of the Kentucky Bluegrass back there, but it seems to be getting worse. That is partially because I don't take care of it as much, and partially because it is not the best bluegrass in the world either :) I will see what the rest of the fall lawn care season brings and make some decisions next season.

    Here in buffalo i haven't had rain in months and none in sight. Its made my over seeding very challenging. Never thought i would be dragging a sprinkler around my 50k sf lawn in the fall. I never wanted it to rain so much in my life!

      I hear you I’m with you in So Illinois. It hasn’t rained for that a 1/4 inch in well over 2-3 months.
      I feel so bad for you tho. I aerated and overseeded and have been dragging the sprinkler around a 8k square foot yard. I COULDNT imagine 50!
      Best of luck to you. We actually have a chance of rain late tonight, but then none again for weeks.

    One thing you will have to get used to with Tall Fescue, don't over water it. Deep and infrequent is the key. Once a week water. If it rains more than a tenth or so, skip that week with watering.

      Yeah, in NC with all the rain this winter. It left my front lawn bald and muddy. The back yard i over seeded well in the fall and it didn't take too much of a hit from all the rain. I was thinking about switching to KBG on the front lawn this spring

    About your allergies. I’ve heard that if you can find some local honey. The closer to your home the better. Then have a spoonful each morning it can really help. The idea is that it helps introduce plenty of local pollens into your system and can help ease their impact on you.

    I reseeded some sections again with a tall fescue/kbg mix a week ago and started seeing good germination yesterday. In a few sections I did the first time at the end of August, it's come in pretty full and looking good. Can't wait to see how it looks when more mature next season. Will it be safe to put preemergent down in the spring after a fall overseed?

  • @andyslawncareandoutdooradv

    I think the fescue is going to be much better for you in the backyard seeing how hot it gets and the sun it gets. My front yard is like 70%KBG and like 30% TTTF and the fescue definetly withstands heat so much better, when its irrigated, it is on fire

    I have fake boxwood hedges on my to-do list. It's the perfect way to get outdoor privacy on a patio. You could also make an elevated flower box next to the table, then have hanging flowers from a tent gazebo over the table - similar to what you find outside of restaurants in public squares in Europe. You have a massive backyard, but in a city with houses built on top of each other, you basically need to have fake boxwood hedges for privacy.

    I have my tall fescue(mix) in my south lawn that gets the most sun, but its also the hardest to water, so I only watered it twice all this last summer, and the only spot that didn't make it is where it is under my neighbour's tree near the street ...my KBG backyard(which actually gets the most shade and water) never went dormant, but my Rye grass mix(which gets the most noon~afternoon hot sun, and some watering when I have to) did go dormant

    Idaho Falls. Elevation 4,700 ft. Twice as high as the national average. Almost exclusively Kentucky Bluegrass. With nearly 6 months of winter, the grass looks good in late spring, then it hates the summer, then tries to recover in the short fall only to be hit by the COLD winter snows. My mission is to have a green lawn throughout the growing season INCLUDING SUMMER.

    Hey, completely off-topic but I have a question I haven’t been able to find an answer to anywhere. I live in Alberta Canada and my lawn along with everyone else’s goes completely brown and dormant in the winter which I know is normal, and my grass will be fine. My question is, in the spring do those brown blades turn green again or does the grass grow new blades? To me it seems like the answer is it grows new blades because every spring I end up with a lot of dead material that doesn’t go away. I’m asking because I’m already looking forward to spring as my lawn is already starting to go dormant, lol. I’m just wondering if I should just scalp all the dead stuff off in the spring so I don’t get matting like I have every other year even after a good raking and don’t have so much dead material in the lawn. Thanks!

    I use to have bad allergies too as I live in the Mid-Atlantic, but I've been able to control it. I take 2 pills of generic Zyrtec/Allegra everyday during allergy season. If my nose is clogged up, I use generic Flonase nasal spray. If that's not enough to stop the runny/itchy nose, I also use azelastine hydrochloride nasal spray. Also, usually Zyrtec/allegra works 90% of the time, but for the 10% when it doesn't work, I take Montelukast, which does require a prescription, but it's not hard to get a prescription for it.

    When you overseed right after doing a renovation do you still create a bed and peat moss/starter fert those bare spots or just spread seed over the top?

    • @KP-sg9fm
      @KP-sg9fm 3 года назад +2

      You definitely want to top dress it with something, starter fert is not necessary but the phosphorus in it can help with rooting, but if there's nitrogen it can make the surrounding grass overgrow the new grass. I would recommend using compost or topsoil instead of peat moss as it is not renewable and takes thousands of years to restore peat bogs, whereas compost only takes a few months to create and is very good for plants.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  3 года назад +1

      If I'm doing overseeding then I have done it many times with just good core aeration and putting the seed into the existing yard. The topdressing isn't completely necessary but can be done if you wish.

    Is it true that we cannot and must not cut TTTF short like your front lawn? And am I right your front lawn is ryegrass? Does it turn brown in summer? Do you fertilize/water it a lot?

      Very true with the TTTF. It won't survive those heights.

      Not exactly. I have some patches in the front that are still alive and fine at .75 all summer

      @@ryanknorrlawncare that reminded me of the old k31 patch I have. I was cutting at 2". i.imgur.com/T4vPTg7.jpg The dead area is Midnight 2/Emblem KBG. I'll be dropping SS1000 in few minutes. Wish me luck!

    What’s going Ryan. Have to ask, but why do you bag your clippings on certain areas when you mow?

      @Jeff Ruiz I have been wondering the same thing. I have read/heard it's always best to mulch.

      Peter Hansen, I’ve seen it done a lot by Allen from LCN, but Ryan is random with the mulching. At that, he’ll do it then he won’t with certain sections of his lawn. Ma Meng Pete, thanks for your feed back. Keep it Reel homie

  • @arsenic0

    Meanwhile im going the opposite way. No matter what elite variety of ryegrass i get every mid spring-mid summer for about 3 months it looks like crap because it goes to seed, it gets a brown tinge because of all the dead/dying seedstalks and looks like crap no matter what height you cut it at, ive tried 1", or 4" it looks bad and feels bad to walk on. Not having to deal with the constant overseeding every year is also a bonus.

    If I add a small percentage of kbg to my tttf during overseed, will it fill in damage done by moles eventually?

    I went hard with overseeding with TF, I’m getting aeration done next week and plan to hit it again with another heavy overseeding. Will it eventually overtake KBG? (Eastern Iowa)

      Ah. Wife definitely won’t allow me to do a full overhaul (can’t even get a striping kit), I suppose I’ll let KBG and water grass run its course with the occasional overseed. Thank you Mr. Knorr

    Looks like your neighbors lawn is really starting to pop! Also, even though your nextdoor neighbor was mowing his lawn like Ricky Bobby at Taladega, at least it was getting mowed and No vehicles were parked on it.

    Ryan,..If that area beyond the fence is not an utility easement & your able to why not think about planting three fast, strong growing shade trees at the furthest point of the grass to help shade that complete area & give protection from the stress of summer & lack of water.

    Hey Ryan. I am in the Twin Cities in MN, and I’m going to be aeration this week and I am considering doing an over seeding as part of that project. I have 25 pounds of Green Loon, Rock-it, and Diva bluegrass blend with 20 percent Double time rye. In your opinion am I to late to the party for over seeding this week? Or should I throw it down? I am also planning of using greens grade milorganite as my starter. Thanks for the advice!
