When I started collecting again I would look all over the internet for answers as to what a coin was when I found an odd ‘error’. It was exhausting and I usually didn’t find the info I needed. Then I found this channel and all that changed. If I need info on anything I just go back through your videos. Chances are you’ve covered it in a clear easy to understand way. Thanks. Your work has put the fun back into my little hobby.

My goodness, Daniel. Every time I have a question about a coin, I pop on one of YOUR videos. Why? Because you tell it like it is even when you know some collectors may not want to hear it. I would much rather learn "the right way" than possibly putting my foot in my mouth. Thanks for doing what you do, you're a blessing to so many. Never mind the nay-sayers !!

When you are first starting out, it is difficult to know which coins have been damaged/altered by outside parties, and which are genuine errors and varieties. I was so grateful for these groups when I was first getting my feet wet with this hobby. Of course, there has to be a willingness to listen even if you are being told something you don't want to hear! I have been doing this long enough now to be able to discern the difference the majority of the time. Just makes me sad that there are folks out there in it for a buck and not for the history and beauty these coins represent. Thanks for making this video, Daniel!

I'm also early into coin collecting, but I am realizing I like the oddities as much as regular coins. I have been collecting vintage damaged coins but not newly damaged coins.

Hi Daniel, thank you for this video. I appreciate the knowledge you impart. Yesterday I got change from a machine and found a pitiful looking quarter. I've never seen so many issues with a quarter. I felt very sad for it. If a quarter could speak it would be screaming in pain. I can barely see it's flattened 1980 date because it's actually now a partial cud. There's a brown spot on it, a jagged crack running across it, and gouges, that's just the face side. I just don't understand this. The eagle side is very weird and ripply and the letters are missing or flat. Why would someone destroy this? Now I'm collecting state quarters and creating a collection for my grandkids. I just feel bad about this quarter. I might send pictures to your website. I inherited an enormous coin collection. Now I'm retired and finally I'm able to enjoy it and learn about all of it thanks to pros like you. Thank you for your help.

Another great video Dan. I love seeing these kinds of topics because it goes over and refreshes the basics as well as some other stuff you migjt not see as often. Id love to see a video on fakes and counterfeits of all different kinds. Ive been collecting them whenever I get the chance just to study for reference but its getting to be more and more of an issue with these online pieces from far off lands getting better and harder to spot. Anyways keep em comin!!!!!

I have 2 binders filled with these type of coins, I also collect them to teach kids at different clubs and have them try to guess how a coin was damaged and whoever guessed the closest gets a 1964 BU Kennedy Half Dollar from me.... however the 1863 Indian head cent made my heart sink.... good job again Daniel

I've been searching a whole bunch of old rolls lately, and I now have almost a full roll of "WTF?" coins. I honestly don't know how anybody can pick out the DDOs that are so subtle, even on a high grade coin under a microscope. When they're old and heavily circulated, I've basically given up, because otherwise I'd just sit and stare at these bloody things for hours (I've yet to see a 1934 that DOESN'T look like it has doubling on the date). But then there are some that are just so bizarre looking that I've scratched my head wondering what could have possibly caused them. A "D" mint mark on the West side of the obverse, strange lettering on the collar above IGWT, all sorts of peaks and valleys on the planchets... I've just started chucking 'em into a pile. Maybe I'll figure them out someday.

5:45 those pennies all appear to have been "dug" and resulting damage could be from fertilizers. I been watching a slew of "diggers" and that is what alot of the coppers they dig do look like from farm fields, whether it be colonial copper or newer memorials, the copper doesnt react well with chemicals.

I had a few quarters that got loose in the washing machine and wound up between the bottom of the tub and sides. When the machine went into it's spin cycle it rolled down the edges of the quarters quite a bit and left a somewhat sharp edge. It looked like it could have been a mint error, but I knew otherwise. I had a heck of a time fishing those quarters out of that washing machine. They spent like any other quarter.

Also-some of the damage could be caused by the coin being laid in concrete. Apparently, some people put coins into concrete for some reason when laying sidewalks and patios back around the 1950’s or 1960’s. When we first moved into the house, there were a couple of coins set into the sidewalks around the house. When removed after decades of exposure and wear, they were very damaged.

I really appreciate these videos. I'm not some kind of video critic that gives someone hell over lighting, length, speed, or whatever because I understand that no one NO ONE can please everyone... Lol you do your best and hope.
I'm more concerned with content and these videos never fail me. I knew NOTHING about coin collecting prior to April 9, 2022. I knew we had 1 year when coins had 2 years on them 😂 and that's because I thought they were magical. Saw a bi-cent half dollar when I was like 5 and was so mesmerized with it that I convinced myself they were magical. Never saw another one in the wild until about 1 month ago. Totally burns my ass too because my daughter gets them all the time.... Why Gawd why? Why must you allow this child things she can use in her torment. Something she can go, "ha ha hahaha ha ha hahahahahahaha!!! Guess what I found?" Why?
    I digress.
Anyhoo.... Sadly my dad passed away on April 9th, the day before his 72nd birthday. It was out of the blue. I thought he was being sent to a rehabilitation center in order to do some rehab on his lungs and next thing I know I'm being told things so quickly I couldn't catch my breath. Within 3 days of finding out my dad had been keeping some things from me.... My dad was gone.
The heartbreak seemed to just take all my energy. I was just so overwhelmed with grief that I couldn't function. I laid in bed and cried for weeks and weeks. One day I decided to just poke around in one of his boxes. I had to pack up his apartment and move all of his belongings out within 7 days so there was no time to really SEE anything. Everything was packed away quickly and carelessly. We had just bought our first home less than 9 months prior so I was barely unpacked myself. I just jodn of pushed boxes where I could fit them and hoped for the best.
After a week or 2 I started poking throigh some of the boxes and I came across his change bag. One of the things my dad and I did together was collect coins and go searching for treasure with his metal detector.
We never did find that horda that some Spanish Prince had buried around here when his ship sunk in the Mississinewa river... Hey I was like 5 or 6 when he first told me that story 🤣🤣 rivers looked big enough to sail huge ships on. 😂
My dad was a story teller and a half and I believed everything he told me.... Yes. I was extremely gullible. Lol. My dad was a character and jeez Louise he could tell me the most fantastical tales. I miss that so much. My dad was very much a loner so he didn't really have any guy friends at least any that he hung out with. I was my dad's fishing buddy, junking buddy, sightseeing buddy, or whatever. When the new Lethal Weapon came out-my dad called me and told me to get my shoes on and meet him in my driveway in 15 mins.
When James Dean Weekend kicked off and the annual cruise in started my dad and I were among the 1st people through the ropes. My dad was a classic car enthusiast and he was hell bent on making me one too....From the age of about 6 he could show me a set or headlights and I could tell you make, motel and year (though I wasn't always right on the year 😂 I could get the make and model every time though lol).
When the price of aluminum went up, he called and told me to get ready because he was on his way to get me..... We needed to 'tidy up' the neighborhood cause then 'durned' alki-holic teenagers that lived across from his house (well it was my grandparents house technically 🥴)
Anyhoo... my dad and I always had fun together-he didn't just stick to the 'every other weekend' schedule. I could call my dad on a Tuesday and he would come and pick me up, he was never 'too busy', or had other plans or too tired. My dad was always there if I needed him to be. I never felt my parents divorce. Hell, they divorced 6 months after I was born so I guess I wouldn't of felt it lol. They loved together another few years but around age 6 they finally called it quits and my dad moved back home with my grandparents. Even though he wasn't in the house anymore, I never felt the loss of him because he was never really absent. My dad was always a call away
Anyhow. I'm sorry. I didn't intent this to be this type of post.... It just kind of bubbled out of me. Wow. I guess I had some stuff I needed to get out lol.
My dad and I never got to add much to a coin collection aside from the giant jar we had collected that was full of wheat pennies. Sadly, when my grandmother's Parkinson's got so bad and my dad was unable to care for her in his own-ny grandma went to live in the nursing home permanently. My uncle was given power of attorney and when he got involved it was like a tornado. All of the Momentos my grandma had collected over the years all the collections she saved of me and my sister were all thrown away if they weren't worth anything. I'm not sure what happened to the jar we had dubbed Will the Wheatie Eater 😂.
So... When I was going through some of the boxes I hadn't expected to find anything valuable-my dad wasn't the kind of guy that bought jewelry omand he didn't have collections that would be worth anything but sentimental value. But I was amazed at the things he had kept-i think he had every card I had ever given him, he had saved every little craft I had made him school. Every single one of them....
He had 3 bags that contained change in them. Without thinking I poured them all into one bag, I immediately regretted it because I knew my dad well enough to know that he had them separated for a reason. I was able to quickly pull out the half dollars and the Indiana head penny and the wheaties and the foreign coins he had.... But the others took some research. As I said .. I knew NOTHING of coins prior to his passing and it just broke my heart to think I might accidently spend a coin that he had be so excited to find. So I kept them all until I could figure out what was part of his collections and what wasn't.
I knew coin collecting was not easy and if you were going to do something it was worth doing right but I had NO IDEA how much information I would need to review in order to pinpoint worthy and unworthy coins.... And this my coin collecting journey began. Along the way it stopped being about identifying my dad's cool coins and became the collection I was continuing. Why stop at putting Dad's collection back together?
So... My coin craze began. Every single ding, scratch or discoloration on a coin looks like something when you know nothing 😂. I watched countless videos on RUclips, I watched TikTok, I checked books out at the library, I watched docu-series. And with each new video watched I gain another 10 more question j need to answer 😂
Sigh..... My coin journey will be never ending and one day I will give my paultry collection to my daughter in the hopes that she might add to it and give it to my granddaughter maybe it'll be worth enough money to help get her that cool car at the age of 16 or maybe it can give her enough money to make college a little less stressful, or gosh dare I dream big enough that it might help her out a down payment on her first home 😳 no that's too much pressure lol.
I thank you so much for taking the time to teach us all of these important tidbits. It's overwhelming at first. You want to keep everything but I'm poor so I can't lol ..... I go through change and I keep what I think is interesting or important and the rest go in a pouch to be used when my pay check doesn't make it to the end of the pay period... I shutter to think of all the coins I got rid of early in because I ha misunderstood so much and had thought then to be error free...... Oh gosh it makes me so sick to my stomach to think of all of the pre 1964 dimes that i failed to keep all because I thought that silver was only used on quarters 😂....
Anyhow. I'm going to shut up and post this before I decide to add some more frivolity. I am truly grateful for you and those like you that take the time to share knowledge with the rest of us. I truly don't know what I would of done without all of this help that is so easily found these days. This has made my life so much easier these last few months and it has allowed me the ability to keep my dad with me a bit longer. Every coins I find it's like we are finding it together and I am so grateful for that....
    Thank you ❤️

The Wolf Can-Chew Bronze like Bubble Gum Bud ^!!^
I can bend 'em them there pennies with My Fingers that is how soft that Bronze is, The Brass ones from 44-45 and 64-82 are noticeably harder to bend with the Fingers.

The most common intentional damage I see in bank rolls is drill holes 🕳. I think the want to use them as a necklace or charm. I do come across coins that have some kind of dye, these I think are used by the mint as markers in production. The type of dye I have never seen before , a bright red.

We used to tape coins down onto railroad rails and let diesel engines and the box cars flatten them. When I think of the silver quarters we ruined. Ahh? Nickels were the best.

I really enjoyed looking at the video about damage versus errors because , being only about half a year into this obsession, I am more often wrong about my coin than right, or I miss it completely. The more comparative information given to me , the better I can become at my hobby. I really appreciate all your great information and education. What I really like though is your passion and genuine care about the coins and the collecting rather than just trying to make money, which while always lovely to stumble blindly () thats me ) upon something exciting that looks like its valuable (like i said i appreciate the lessons) i like your enthusiasm it gets me excited about my coins when Ive had some false hurrahs and felt a little ignorant. Im too scared to post pictures anywhere because Im not experienced enough and i got laughed at in the last place i tried to get advice.. suggestions? a forum or place i can freely express my numistical challenges without fear of scorn? lovwe elle, gratitude again. namaste

I have a few older coins , that after watching this presentation I am still unable to determine if these coins are damaged or actual errors . Thank you , I still learned something even though I am still stumped .

Of course it took a couple of years to understand just how manipulating some people are to make a quick buck. I hope this group will heed your candid and informative information in your videos. In a perfect world everyone would be honest : but, this is the real world and it is far from perfect. Thank you for being a helping hand for anyone who seeks help: including me when I was starting out.

I mean that 1863 Indian Head Penny, in the 157 years it’s existed, I think it’s probably more likely that pre 1900 someone was just bored and decided to file it to make it look cool, rather than someone modern day with a dremel

Came across this morgan the other day, wondering what you thought about this, i have multiple people telling me its damage as well as people telling me its a lamination. The denticles under the moved denticles have me questioning this. Wondering your opinion!

I just found your channel. I am new to the hobby although I have been a Silver stacker for a few years. I have started getting into coins (I love Franklin halves) and have learned so much from your videos. I do buy off of Ebay but now i know what to look for, I have made a few mistakes but fortunately I has not cost me much. I have a very good local coin shop that has fair prices and will spend the time to explain things to me. I think a local shop is the way to go in the beginning. Thanks Daniel!

Thank you for sharing your cion show finds. Those finds are in the price range of many coin collectors like myself. It's my personal opinion that our country's first coins are some of the most interesting coins ever minted, and when you find those gems. It's just as exciting as finding a silver Reale on the beach. Thank you again.

Jewely coins may have been done years ago when the cent was a cent, not a collector coin. I have picked up through the years a small handful of damaged coins and a few errors. One "rolled" edge, a stamp cutout of Kennedy, deep scratches for whatever reason and a recent hobo nickle. I have a ground down dime that has very odd scratch features on the edge I haven't figured out how they were formed, a puzzle.

Sad thing is that some of the coins like this may have been worth something before they got screwed with. I have found a few different coin's that were collectables, but they were damaged intentionally in some way by someone. I found a Wisconsin extra leaf not to long ago that someone damaged intentionally. Might not of known what they had,or were trying to make up something to make it seem like a extra error or something... I have 2 Wisconsin's already or I would of been more bummed about it. But it did take away the chance for someone else to of maybe of had a good find. The railroad tracks coins are another thing people find and think are a weird error, and also the silver pennies people find from the science experiments.

What about hobo coins,I saw a trade dollar on HA ag grade but someone etched it , this coin was gold , everyone bidding higher and higher so they could show it to their friends. Bottom line it was pornographic in nature. I bet the person lost interest in it real fast, look laugh and ask themselves why did I buy this? Good workmanship though like hobo nickels.
