  • Are online "unsearched" wheat penny rolls a good bargain?
In this video I was "gifted" some unsearched wheat penny rolls that a seller from eBay got their hands on. They actually sent me a few rolls to test out for them since I have bought from them before.
I was really surprised by the finds in these two rolls and was happy that they gave them to me!
Here's a link to their eBay Store since they have great feedback and I have done well with my purchases from them:

If you look at the condition of the 50s wheats you can tell they have a lot more than 10 or 15 years of wear on them. Assuming they were wrapped in the 60s they would be in much better condition. Just look at the current coins that are 20 years old made in 2000 most have very good detail left. Sorry if it doesn't make sense, it does to me. Imo these are completely searched and seeded with certain coins to make people somewhat happy when unwrapping these.

It is unlikely that these are original for several reasons:
    1. The rolls have a ZIP code which dates them after 1963. You would expect a good many high grade early sixties Memorials.
    2. The Philadelphia Mint is overrepresented - Coins didn't move around the country as much 50+ years ago - I got rolls in California in the mid 70's and they were mostly "D" and "S" mints. I would expect the later coins to be almost all from Denver.
    3. There were Indian cents but all of them were discolored as if they were in a moist environment or a limited time in water. Almost none of the wheats were that way.
The rolls would not be a bad deal if they were relatively cheap and would be a good way to start a collection.
I have been an avid collector for over 50 years (most of my life) and I base this opinion on experiences over the years.

Hiya, Rob. I started collecting in 1966 with a retired friend of the family. I was 14 and he and I would go to the bank every Friday and get 2 "bags"of coin, $100 in nickels and $50 in pennies. Walt, our friend, was a penny hoarder since the early 50s. He had inside info the penny was going to have a new reverse. The rolls you have look 1960sISH, and if so, I'd say these aren't unsearched. In a $50 bag in 1966 we were pulling large amounts of teens through 30s. Also, many with lots of luster remaining. Some sellers fill rolls with some IHCs and a few early years to keep ya coming...for premium priced rolls. Kudos to the seller who sent them! Great video as usual, Rob.

One thing I've learned is old isn't necessarily valuable, or very valuable. My grandmother was two years old when your 1888 was struck. Thinking of her it doesn't seem that old to me. But it is an interesting bunch for so called unsearched rolls. Had they been rolled in the 1950s I would think the coins of that era would have been minty.

A couple of red flags: Cripple Creek CO but yet seemed heavily biased to lower cost P mints especially on the oldies. If they were truly from Colorado I doubt this would be the case. Also no memorials? Then it must have been 1958 or very early 1959. If so should be loaded with BU and AU 50s. Yes there were some but also some well circ brown ones. Those Indian Heads were the cheapies also and all seemed to not have a visible liberty headband which is a key grading criteria. I'm not buying it.

These are absolutely well-searched and seeded. They are sure to load at least one "special" coin in each roll and a bunch of circulation-culled Wheats. You can get the wrappers printed for you and they most likely have a coin roller, then then age the rolls to make it look like they have been sitting in a vault somewhere for 50 years when in reality they were likely rolled within days of them showing up in your PO box. My local coin shop made and sold "Unsearched" rolls like this and made more money on eBay than from his retail store.

When I received the rolls, the seller included a letter that said they were "good roles" but, if unsearched, how did the seller know? Secondly, the rolls were obviously assembled by the seller because the composition was a run of pennies -- one penny for each year -- which is impossible for a bank roll or mint roll. The zip code on the roll indicates the coins had to have been rolled after zip codes were implemented, which would make the rolls from 1963 or later. The fact that coins rolled in 1963 don't have any coins from 1960, 1961, or 1962 means something is fishy.

Hey Rob. I buy Pennies on eBay too. I tried to read the reviews before purchasing. I get that some people don't want to post what they fine. We need to come up with a grading system for rolls. I don't mind paying a little extra for truly unsearched rolls. As always Rob great finds. Love your Channel.

I got in to coins when I was very young. My grandparents would let me look at their bags of old pennies. In the early 60's the coins were about what you got but a lot more steel cents and no Indian Heads. The coin wrappers look like 1950s fonts. So the rolls are probably from the 1960s, semi-searched, set aside a forgotten for a long time.

You can buy these old rollers on ebay ever so once in a while. I seen one that was just bought off ebay from the 50s new old stock and it looked like a cigarette rolling machine. It came with vintage papers and the rolls looked just like yours. The contraption was spring loaded and pretty cool but in the wrong hands a scammers money tree...

    I bought 10 rolls of " unsearched " rolls from e-bay ,
I was busy when i got them so i stuffed them away , i still have them intact in the back of my closet .
I'm not a collecter , but i save all of my pocket change in 5 gallon plastic jugs .
Some MONTH, i think I'll check them all out ..( i also store them in empty paint buckets ).😃
Just too hard to see 500 coins at one sitting lol..

First i like the way you display your coin finds. My dad had a ton of coins...like Kennedy silver fifty cent pieces silver quarters some Indian head nickels wheat pennies very old 1 & 2$ certificates...i believe I found a 1943 wheatie....funny though because after my dad passed away in 91, I looked through his collection and didn't see one i think till now...its in good condition but it's a bit worn by the date. Any idea of worth if it is?

These are definitely searched because when I got 5 Indian heads in a roll all the other dates were mostly 10s and 20s it does make sense that there are 3 Indian heads yet almost no 20s 10s and 30s

You should try bidding on one of my small cents shotgun "Roles" I can assure you my coins are a lot better than these starters unsearched coins that you have been showing your average Indian head is only worth between $1 or $2 and these early wheat pennies send them to NGC most of them will get a grading of details environmental damaged or details cleaned and that 1931-s that was planted in that roll of coins for you I just sent off a 1931-s wheat penny to be graded with NGC I thought sure I would get at least a grade of MS-60 instead they graded it an AU-54. I am sure that your 1931-s wheat penny NGC would grade it F-12 with details environmental damage. Don't get me wrong I am learning a lot watching your video's and I am grateful that you are showing everybody these videos. I tried what you are doing yesterday I bought 2 wheat penny rolls from the same dude the 1st roll I won the bid for $7.50 and the second roll I bought from him at a fixed price with free shipping both rolls of wheat pennies I threw in my copper bile All 100 of those wheat pennies were worth more for their copper GO figure?

Question: I have several rolls that looked like those that my father in law gave me, he retired and wanted to travel and not have to worry about coins, so what should I do with them? He wants me to sell them and spend the money on his grandchildren. But how do I go about selling them? I dont want to do this wrong.

RFT very cool, all i get are bills in the mail😢. You get some very cool stuff in your mailcalls, that shows the type of person you are very generous and well deserving of them. Always very cool video I wish i could catch your livestreams more there always a good time. I recommend Robfinds Treasure's livestreams to anyone who has never checked it out you'll enjoy yourself. Unless you don't like having fun and everyone likes to have fun at least once and a while. Again WOW those were some really nice rolls, I would love to get some mail like that. A ton of nice Indians, couldn't have went to a nicer person congrats on all the cool finds. The 1909 is in decent shape it's worn but VDB would probubbly be visible under that magnification. If you have another 1909 try to compare the two next to eachother still cool to get a 1909 that's not completely worn 👍👍💯!

Back about 1963 my brother drove an ice cream truck in Houston TX. He'd come home with Indian heads, V nickles, and various Barber head coins, and I'd give him modern coins to replace them. Unfortunately, being a kid, I ended up spending most of them as time went on. I still have the 1881 S silver dollar he brought home one day.

  • @sluggger
    @sluggger 4 года назад

The most glaring thing to me is that if unsearched from the late 50s, #1) the coins from the 50s wouldn't have today's level of wear on them as they appear to have, since they would've just been new coins sitting in a roll, not to mention the roll would have, #2) at least conceivably, more distribution of coin dates i.e. more of the noticeably absent 30s representation and perhaps a few more from the 20s as well. I would also say 3 IH is suspect in any random sampling of two, even of the possible era of the rolls, but I guess that could come down from sheer luck. Someone could've repacked these over the years at some point and just did a very good job at it... or it could've been, by chance, some of the nicest individual rolls anyone's ever packed. Honestly, I'm not sure what to believe, but, the only thing I would say is to caution anyone buying similar rolls expecting the same results. That's really all that can be said on the issue of whether they're unsearched and whether it's a good idea to make purchases where the proposition is similar, is simply to advise caution. However, obviously, you got these for free which was a wonderful gift, and I was excited to see such nice pulls. Thanks for the video.
