The physiological driven approach to sizing grips is definitely something this industry needs. I hope that the industry starts to see a shift over the years with more professionals from outside fields making their way into R&D and Marketing.
Been dealing with a lot of hand fatigue over the years. After some adjustments and recommendations I think these are the next step in solving my problem. Thanks!
Thank you so much for your videos! Your video about lower back pain really helped me out. My seat was all out of wack and my posture wasn’t great to start out with. I really appreciated your explanation of the spine’s structure and movement. I took your suggestions and it made a huge difference! Once my back stopped hurting I was able to notice that my hands and wrists felt like they were taking an unhealthy amount of impact on rougher trails, especially on a budget hardtail 😂 Just ordered myself some fat paws and I’m looking forward to trying them out! Everyone deserves to enjoy a bike without hurting all over, and your videos are making that happen for people. Rock on Dr MTB!
Thank you for this video! Just stumbled upon Fat Paws and was looking for a review, but got a ton of additional great info from this video. Never heard of that way of measuring grip size, and according to that formula, 36mm Fat Paws are just perfect for me. Subscribed 🍻
I have been running foam grips on my flat bar gravel bike for sometime now. First it was a set of bontragers and now a set of esi chunkys. I really like them. They hold up pretty well and are definitely super grippy. I have noticed some numbness on longer rides and your suggested calculations point to me searching for a grip that is about 35.5mm in diameter. So I think I may step up to the esi extra chunky as I have been happy with their product and like to support companies that manufacture in the states. I don’t want to go any larger as I am concerned a super thick grip may interfere slightly with my brake lever. Should be a nice upgrade nonetheless. Thank you for talking about the science.
Love your videos! I haven’t even watched the whole thing I’m liking the video baby!! Keep up the amazing work. Wish you much success with your channel.
This is great information. There's a lot of "bro-science" floating around out there about grips, so it's great to get something backed with actual data.
I ran extra chunky esis for a few years. Few years ago, rev grips launched their grips. They are more expensive at first, but i dont look back. Foam grips wear out quite quickly, and thats when you start to deathgrip again. Rev grips you can just buy new rubbers, those go foe 25 bucks, and youre good as new.
Love my esi chunkys.... but I will say they are super slippery without gloves. Another pro tip is to use Odyssey bar end plugs for much better durability
I'll have to look into that. Even for a short woman, I have really small hands (I wear children's size TASCO gloves if that's any indication) and I get dead hands all the time. The carbon fiber handle bar has helped a lot though. Great videos. Looking forward to the next one in this series.
Check out revgrips. There is suspension built into the grip. They seem expensive to start, but they will reduce your dead hand significantly. The "small" size is really just standard but they are available in half waffle for great grip. Replacement rubber for the grip is about $25 but they last a long time. (I have no financial interest. I'm just a fan.) Also, dead hand/arms may be a geometry issue. Right size bike, riding position, seat angle, stack height, and handlebar sweep. That handlebar sweep is subtle but ~2degrees makes a huge difference. It's best to have someone super knowledgeable about bike fit observe you on the bike. A bike shop employee or someone with tons of the right experience is your best bet. This may not be your favorite riding buddy.
Really enjoy your videos. I’ve been running the mega fatpaw for a couple months and I’m over the moon for them. Hands 212mm so they are probably a touch thicker than I need, but so far so good. I’m sure you’ll keep up the good work. Very informative.
Hey thanks! Glad to hear I'm not the only one that loves them. I actually ran the Mega Fats before learning the formula. I could tell they were slightly too large for me (195mm as I mentioned), but I still got along with them well and appreciated the extra padding. I'd say you're totally fine with the Megas because some of the studies recommended up to 19.5% which would actually put you 41mm grip diameter. 👊🏼
Fatpaw user here, that certainly applies for mega fatpaws. I'd say most adults should run 36mm grips. 30mm grips for people that say they "like them" is just incorrect
Great video, thank you! I also run ESI/Wolftooth grips on all my bikes and love them. So it's been 6 months now, how about that OneUp bar review?! I'd love to hear your thoughts as a PT!
I know we're not talking about the old hard foam grips, but does that mean most soft foam grips now are made of silicone? Hard to tell what's what when you're shopping on Amazon. Some say silicone, some say soft foam, are they just basically equal material wise?
Me quedo los puños Fat Paw de 36mm, me siento más cómodo, lo he probado los dos Easy grip y prefiero fat paw. Saludos desde Santo Domingo en República Dominicana 🇩🇴
Thanks for this video. I just ordered the Mega Fat Paws. It would be nice if there was a brand that made a 38 mm grip. What did your thoughts on the oneup handlebar end up being? I was looking at that as a solution to grip pain as well.
Great video, I’m ordering now some fat paws. Currently running Ergon GA3 and they help tremendously, but this kinda looks like a better design. What’s the name of the second trail shown?
Keep in mind that a set of mechanical lock-ons will notgive you the feel or motor skills your real hands have. The tech is not there yet so it might be too early to amputate your hands just due to looks.
I installed them on my fat bike and they seem to keep my hand warmer than rubber grips . I live in canada and its hard to keep your hands warm at -15 degrees celsius.
They're on-par, if not more durable than a standard rubber grip IMO. My Wolf Tooth grips on my Hightower lasted over 1 year. Realistically, I probably could have replaced them at 8-10 months just to get a fresh set, but they held up well past that.
If your skin comes off, try riding with gloves. I can't believe there was a time i rode without my fox ranger gloves, it makes it all so much more comfortable without hindering your finger movement.
Ergons aren’t helping I’ll give this a try. Also would love to see a OneUp bar review since there is a lot of talk on reducing vibration. Great channel btw interesting perspective!
Grab some foam grips from my shop, Somercycle here... www.somercyclebikes.shop/components/grips/

Did it work?
This 18% measure should be used for more grips and selling th3’ accurately. Great vid.
I've never thought about the size of the handle grip, but the video was very helpful. Thank you.
👊🏼
Ive been using the Fat paw grip for over 6 months now they are the most comfortable grips ive used.
I just recently switched to a set of Wolftooth fat paws.
Can't believe I put up with my old grips for so long.

Have you enjoyed the fat paws did they make a difference? I am also on a hard tail mtb
Pretty compelling stuff. I definitely look forward to more videos from you where you meld your PT knowledge with your MTBing. Great video!

hey colleague! from NY here. just discovered this video coz i’m trying to upgrade my handgrips, seats and gloves for downhill MTB this season.
This is great information. There's a lot of "bro-science" floating around out there about grips, so it's great to get something backed with actual data.
This is unreal I will be trying these out and I will let you know if it helps me

Very interesting, I haven't thought of grip size ever. My hand size is right around 190mm so I can't wait to try those chunky grips
Thanks for this video. I just bought the Fat Paw WolfTooth grips.
I have larger than average hand and I like the ESI racers edge there the slim ones!
less issues with my palms
I run foam grips and they are awesome... lighter, less hand fatigue/arm pump and super grippy
Good review of foam grips! Size explanations is nice touch!
Thanks for the video! It really helped me to choose a FAT grip to solve the pain.
Love my esi chunkys.... but I will say they are super slippery without gloves. Another pro tip is to use Odyssey bar end plugs for much better durability
I will say that I haven’t personally ran the ESI grips, but just feeling them compared to the Wolf Tooth, the Wolf Tooth do seem tackier.

My hands were 37.7mm. I guess that means Fat Paw or Mega Fat Paw for me!
Fatpaw user here, that certainly applies for mega fatpaws. I'd say most adults should run 36mm grips.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting.
Wolf tooth is the best, used esi and they chip really fast
Thank you!
Great video! Question I want to get the wolf tooth fat paw. But, I saw that have a CAM version. Can you make a review of those??
Hello, I’m all for silicone grips but… my bike has drop handlebars! What would you suggest for these? Looking forward to your advice 🤗
Thanks for this video. I just ordered the Mega Fat Paws. It would be nice if there was a brand that made a 38 mm grip. What did your thoughts on the oneup handlebar end up being? I was looking at that as a solution to grip pain as well.

What’s the name of the second trail shown?
Thanks and I hope you like them! Trail is High Roller flow trail @ Pulaski County Park in Nancy, KY.
How would you rate the Ergon GA3 to address the same pain or numbness issues compared to these foam grips?
My hands always go numb. I don't like the way they look vs a nice set of lock-ons but It's worth a shot I guess.
Keep in mind that a set of mechanical lock-ons will notgive you the feel or motor skills your real hands have. The tech is not there yet so it might be too early to amputate your hands just due to looks.
I installed them on my fat bike and they seem to keep my hand warmer than rubber grips . I live in canada and its hard to keep your hands warm at -15 degrees celsius.
are they silicone or foam??
Been wanting to run grips like this for a while but how do they grip? Also, do they get slippery when wet if I wanted to go gloveless?
Only problem, they break very quickly. If i rub them on something they rip apart
Have you tried RevGrips? Do you have a comparison video between the revgrips vs these grips?
No I haven't. I have heard good things about them.
My silicone grips shrink overtime is that ok?
Interesting! I too always figured these for weight weenies only. How's the durability? Outside of crashing, do they hold up well?
They're on-par, if not more durable than a standard rubber grip IMO. My Wolf Tooth grips on my Hightower lasted over 1 year. Realistically, I probably could have replaced them at 8-10 months just to get a fresh set, but they held up well past that.
Thanks! That's good to hear. I figured they didn't last long either. Wrong on that too!
@@MTBActionCam1 👊🏼
hello, my hands tend to hurt on long routes, and my little fingers sometimes go numb.
Do you think this grip can help me with that?
Foam grips would definitely be a cheap way to try to mitigate vibration which can contribute to your issues.
@@DrJMTB thanks, i just ordered the wolf teeth
did you try the wolf tooth echo grips?
Always feels like my hands are going to slip off with foam grips😂
I have rubber grips, should i get foam ones? My hands hurt after riding and my skin comes off.
If your skin comes off, try riding with gloves. I can't believe there was a time i rode without my fox ranger gloves, it makes it all so much more comfortable without hindering your finger movement.
