    I’ve been letting my IBS symptoms creep up on me since before Christmas. General discomfort, but putting it down to hectic family catch up season, extra travel, eating out etc. Warning sign a few days ago, sharp lower abdomen pain shortly after a ‘full Scottish’ breakfast. Stools varying between hard and soft. Gas (we say farts 😮) not noxious, but almost inadvertent. Still nothing clicked. And then …. now mid January … last night, just before bedtime. Holy Feck ! Absolutely doubled up. Left side, mid to lower abdomen. Really, really acute pain. Spasms. Crawled into bed. Crawled out again 3 times during a sleepless night to pass water. So here I am, stomach groaning and rumbling, but acute pain subsiding, seeking RUclips assistance. Hit the jackpot first time with you, Michelle. Thank you for putting me back on the straight and narrow. Watched both your clips on emergency pain control and dietary recommendations. Extremely helpful, easy to understand and relate to, - and above all presented in a knowledgeable and compassionate manner. So, Thank You from the bottom of my … er bottom 👏👏👏

    Thank you so much for making the connection between pelvic floor dysfunction and IBS/constipation. I told providers for years that I thought my severe PFD pain was related to chronic constipation, but no one took me seriously. I finally have had successful PT, and found the FODMAP diet on my own after the only suggestion was Miralax. Miralax works, but creates other problems (multiple bowel movements) as you know. Also, I believe my fairly moderate case of joint hypermobility is a major factor with gut issues, but again no one can address.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  3 года назад +5

      @LR LR I couldn't agree more, every time you strain with constipation the pelvic floor nerves and muscles are stretched. If they are already tight this worsens the condition and is extremely painful. I'm so glad to read that you've found the solution, it can take a long time can't it. Have you tried the paediatric version of Movicol? It's an osmotic laxative like Miralax but might be less aggressive on your pelvic floor perhaps? Just a thought and all the best for your future management 🙏

    I was on Fodmap diet two years ago avoiding to eat a lot of this food, it helped me to lose about 25 pounds which it was great. I agree that some of this fruits, vegetables and other things triggers GERD, but some of the food that are allowed to eat also triggers my GERD symptoms. So I think we have to try and see which foods are okay to eat and not. I did eliminate from my diet tomatoes, whole milk, cheddar cheese, corn, chilis, carbonated water and drinks, limes and lemons, black beans, but curiously I can tolerate Pinto beans, and almond milk. I can't tolerate chocolate, strawberries, and anything that has gluten, monosodium glutamate or soy.

    I know everyone's body is different. I was diagnosed with IBS and am trying to figure out my triggers. Cucumbers and salad are bad for IBS. Both give me constipation. Cold food is harder on your body than room temperature or warm foods. Fish and Chicken breast are good. Tougher meats give me issues. I disagree with soy milk being a IBS trigger. It is not for me. Dairy is a trigger for me though. Cow milk, cheese give me stomach pains and bloating. I have no issues with nuts. I can eat them all without issues. Chia seeds give me stomach pains. I also have no issues with honey. Hopefully this helps someone else with similar issues. Gluten is a trigger for me too.

    Michelle I am SO glad I found your channel! I’ve had gut issues for decades which have been progressively getting worse with lots of constipation. But it’s funny I keep reading how garlic and onions are great prebiotics that help to feed your friendly gut bacteria, so I’ve been having that with my water kefir and sauerkraut all to no avail, and lately I said to myself having just bought a load of them “I don’t think these agree with you”. But it’s funny when you mentioned honey I was flabbergasted! I buy raw honey and always end up with an oral thrush white thick coated tongue, but surprisingly I’m ok with maple syrup. So I’m definitely gonna look into the amo aah diet, because most of my trigger foods are the ones you said to avoid, particularly cashews and pistachios 😳😱. Thank you ever so much for sharing, and here’s to my good health 😊.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  2 года назад +3

      @BeaunaturelleFeb11 yes I hear you - unfortunately not all prebiotic foods agree with everyone (myself included). Garlic, onions and sauerkraut are all classic triggers for IBS and yes maple syrup (pure) is fodmap friendly. See if you can work with a dietitian who understands FODMAPS otherwise I can highly recommend the Monash Uni App as it gives quantities etc and is very user friendly. I’ve learnt the hard way that just because a food is a prebiotic doesn’t mean it’s going to be well tolerated. You may find that some prebiotic foods such as cooked and cooked potato and rice work well. I can tolerate tinned asparagus too and small quantities if some tinned legumes but it’s a very individual thing. All the best to you! 🙏

    Took me a few years of added weight (yes, the body thinks it's starting and may hold on to carbs and sugars) and lost hair for me to figure out my triggers are flavor enhancers. MSG and all of its relatives like anything autolyzed or hydrolyzed, as well as cartagenan, soy derivatives and other emulsifiers. Hard in the US as soo many foods have flavor enhancers. If the label says spices or flavorings, I avoid. We need to clean up our foods. I get stomach cramps just walking down the condiment isle.

      @ Laurie Swanson peas more likely to cause gas & bloating I would think, avo is fat which may slow down gastric motility in some people but everyone is different in their response - simple test is to eliminate them reintroduce one at a time and note the effect. All the best! 🙏🌸

      IBS is easily curable through ayurveda(ancient methods for treating various disease in India)
      If you want to cure ibs you have to take following medicine for aprox 4-6 month with strict diet and yoga poses but have no idea these medicine is available in your country but you can get these medicine from India if you have any friend or relative
      - Bilvadi churan Or belgiri churan (1tabkespoon after meal morning and after dinner)
      -kutajghanvati(2-2 tablets after meal)

    Just regarding the Yogurt info I'm confused,
    At : 8:07 you said we should avoid all milk based products like Yogurts.
    Then 12:51 you said you include Yogurt in your IBS smoothie.
    Other doctor in RUclips said Greek yogurt is actually good for IBS diet.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  2 года назад

      @Adam My apologies for the confusion. Some individuals are intolerant to lactose in regular (and Greek) yogurt. With the elimination diet, regular yogurt can be substituted with lactose-free yogurt or there is an enzyme called lactase (pharmacy or online) that can be taken orally with regular yogurt. Some individuals with lactose intolerance can still tolerate small amounts of lactose eaten through the course of the day too but it’s a matter of finding out how much lactose your body can actually tolerate, first by elimination and then reintroduction of small amounts of regular yogurt. Meanwhile, lactose-free yogurt can be a good option. I hope this helps🙏

    VALUABLE HEALTH TIPS WHICH I HAVE LEARNED BY TRYING TO KEEP TO A CARNIVORE DIET FOR MOST OF THE TIME OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS WHILE ON A TIGHT BUDGET.
    I have been on a carnivore diet most of the time for approximately four years. I have learned a lot about it because of the mistakes I have made with my carnivore diet strategies during that time. I am on a tight budget and I can still easily keep within my budget while maintaining a carnivore diet.
    If I continue to eat cheese and natural yogurt while on the carnivore diet I will never lose any weight and furthermore cheese is known to stimulate the human appetite to a large degree.
    To achieve weight loss and good health on a carnivore diet one must abstain from eating any sugar whatsoever. One must abstain from eating any food which contains fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, dextrose, or sucrose and if there is any other type of sugar that I have not listed here one must abstain from that also. The human body converts fuel obtained from the carnivore diet into any sugar it might need by a process of gluconeogenesis so there is no nutritional or health requirement for any human being to ever eat any type of sugar whatsoever. Eskimoos which are also known as Inuits and also many other tribes throughout the world who live in cold climates have no access to plants because their climate is too cold to grow plants so therefore they have no access to sugar of any kind and yet they have lived and thrived for thousands of generations without any type of sugar.
    I am now modifying my carnivore diet by eliminating all yogurt, cheese and butter from now on. I plan to eat six eggs either hard boiled or fried in goose fat for my breakfast and my evening meal and I plan to eat meat for my lunch on a daily basis. The twelve eggs will cost me approximately four Euros and the meat will cost me approximately five Euros and the goose fat and coffee will cost me approximately one Euro which comes to ten Euros per day. I should not be drinking coffee as coffee is a plant and has no part to play on a carnivore diet but I am not willing to give it up at this time.
    As all of the food I will be eating is non-addictive food I am assured by many other carnivores that my false appetite for food will disappear after one month of keeping to this diet and I will then easily be able to reduce down to two meals per day.
    While on a carnivore diet it is absolutely essential to intermittent fast which means that one must never snack outside meal time and one must avoid eating food from six p.m. each evening until the following morning. If you continue snacking you will not succeed in your endeavours to improve your health and to lose weight. Intermittent facting by abstaining from food for at least fourteen hours or more during the night while drinking water whenever you feel hungry is an essential part of the health regime and if you skip it you will not succeed in your endeavours.
    If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome you must give up all plant fibre because humans have a very difficult time digesting plant fibre. You will then notice an improvement in your digestive health but however your irritable bowel syndrome symptoms will not completely disappear until you also intermittent fast by fasting on water for at least fourteen hours per day. Snacking between meals and at night must be entirely eliminated if you wish for vibrant health.

      @s m great questions thank you. Re the child if you can access kiwi fruits this is a great fruit high in vitamin c and can be blended into smoothies along with blueberries and bananas not too ripe. Citrus is also great - mandarins and oranges. Papaya is usually well tolerated (again can sneak into smoothies). As for vegetarian protein sources - firm Tofu, nuts (walnuts are great), seeds (IBS friendly), low FODMAP nut butters and for lactoovo vegetarians low lactose yogurt and milk, eggs, hard cheese. Tinned lentils and chickpeas (not soaked) may be tolerated in small quantities ie 1/4 to 1/2 cup per meal and start slowly reintroducing these. Hope this helps!🙏

    Going to make my progress report in this thread!
    My Symtoms: (Trigger Warning: very descriptive)
    • Constipation (not the one where u dont poop, but more like poop is too hard to pass - it happens once in a week)
    • Very frequent bowel movements (not diarrhea though, like last 2 days i pooped 6 times and every time only a little comes out)
    • Excessive Gas (this is the main and embarrassing issue, im farting like 30 times a day for last 1 year)
    • Bloating (swollen belly, where i feel there is gas in it which is not getting out. it causes pressure on my bladder and i feel like i have to pee, and it also causes pressure on my pelvic floor)
    • Feeling of not getting emptied after bowel movement (like 20-30% of the times). But i think its because of either gas putting pressure or because of tight rectal muscles
    • Weird noises coming from my intestines/stomach
    My doctors, everytime i went to her, said: just exercise
    which i did and it didn't help!
    Things that im feeling could be the problem:
    - issue with liver/gallbladder (not producing bile or something)
    - sibo
    - bad bacteria in gut
    - very tight rectal muscles
    - extreme stress
    I'm gonna address each one - by one to see what the issue is, starting with:
    - Quitting Alcohol/Coffee (which is the hardest part)
    - Going low-fodmap diet
    - 18-20hr Fasting 3x a week
    - Daily walk for 30min
    - Proper sleep routine to reduce stress

    I can’t believe you also have IBS. I was researching the link between Pelvic floor and IBS as I have just been diagnosed with IBS after 7 or so years of symptoms. I wonder if you know is it common to get pelvic ‘ bloat’ or ‘bulging out’ even when not actually having an IBS flare? I’ve noticed over the last 6-12 months my lower abdo pokes out even when not bloated. Is it genetic or something I can fix?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  2 года назад

      @Kelsie Linnell yes the bloating can occur without a flare-up. It can happen just because of the increased fluid in the belly when the sugars aren’t well digested in the small intestine. This usually happens towards the end of the day. For me the only way to fix is to keep to lower FODMAP foods. I will also mention the importance of speaking with your doctor about abdominal bloating rather than self-diagnosing too. I hope this info helps!🙏

    The big concern I've always had with the FODMAPS diet is that it includes so many high-glycemic choices, so maybe you'll solve your IBS and get diabetes while you're at it. You also included some foods very high in oxalates (e.g. kiwi, spinach) which could potentially cause more problems over time than the IBS problem you started with.

    • @Oblisk
      @Oblisk 3 года назад +13

      That’s why it’s better that start adding IF (intermittent fasting) to your lifestyle. Will help keep insulin down and when it comes to spinach, cooking it will actually help break down and reduce the oxalates making it easier for you to digest.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  2 года назад +9

      @Malcolm Achtman yes agreed the FODMAP diet does include some high-gylcemic choices however there are also numerous low-glycemic options too, do you have the Monash FODMAP app? I'm interested in your comment on high oxalate foods worsening IBS, why do you think that this is the case. IBS is really about poorly digested sugars in foods rather than oxalates. Spinach can be readily substituted for plain iceberg lettuce, I personally tend to choose spinach for its iron content as my meat intake is minimal. I'm keen to hear your thoughts on this Malcolm, cheers MK

      @@michellephysio I don't have the Monash FODMAP app itself but I've checked it out online. And I have a book (The Complete Low-FODMAP Diet) co-authored by Dr. Peter Gibson of Monash University. My comment on high oxalate foods worsening IBS is something that came up in some RUclips videos featuring the "oxalate expert" Sally Norton. Here's a link to one of her videos where I believe she mentioned oxalates and IBS: ruclips.net/video/OBcm4uVuPsY/видео.html -Sally Norton would tell you eat lettuce, not spinach, because spinach is a very high oxalate food. I don't eat spinach or lettuce anymore and my diet has become more animal based. Spinach (and lettuce) have made news headlines regarding E.coli contamination from time to time - another reason why I'm happy to avoid it.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  3 года назад

      @ Mercedes Picot yes I find that somethings recommended on the low fodmap diet can still irritate by gut - hard Tofu is recommended on the Monash food App and many can actually tolerate it, its that old adage everyone it different in their food responses however hard Tofu is low fodmap and I am aware that many viewers are vegetarian. Thanks so much for commenting 🥰

      @@michellephysio Hi again. Don't want to challenge your recommendations but I worked in nutrition for over 20 years and we both know how much misinformation is out there. The only difference between hard tofu and soft tofu is water content so Monash making one ok and the other not is still not making sense to me.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  3 года назад +3

      @ Mercedes Picot no problem at all, it's good to question everything!! Monash Uni research reveled that silken tofu is high FODMAP in a 140g serve, due to the presence of oligos (GOS and fructans), whereas firm tofu is low in FODMAPs in a 170g serve. It comes down to water solubility of the GOS and fructans because particularly fructans and GOS) which are water soluble, so drained, firm tofu (with a lower water content) is lower in FODMAPs than silken tofu that has a high water content. Hope this makes sense. But as for everyone individual tolerance levels differ, what wroks doe some doesn't work for others! All the best

    Michelle, thank you so much 🥰. So informative and systematically presented. Surprisingly, many healthy foods for vegetarians need to be restricted. Is this relevant for bloating without IBS?? Bloating could be because of other reasons to, isn't it?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  3 года назад +1

      @Anjali Agrawal yes exactly, just because a food is vegetarian, vegan or natural doesn't mean it's bowel friendly for people with some bowel issues. Yes you're right bloating can be for reasons other than IBS for example foods like beans are really great food for the gut biome and in the process of digestion the bacteria feed off these foods producing gas as a by-product leading to bloating in some people. Hope you're doing well Anjali 🌼

      I am going to leave the coffee alone and see if that makes a difference, I am due a celiacs blood test next week so I am having to eat gluten at the moment, my GP realised I have never been tested for it even tho I have had IBS over 30 years, I also told her I had never been sent to a dietitian either. One thing I can’t have is tap water, where I live in England the tap water has a very high content of fluoride in it so I avoid that even tho my GP don’t agree with me, if I drink it within seconds my stomach starts to bubble then I will be sick followed by terrible pain in the upper right side of colon? Your video have been a great help to me and I can’t thank you enough, when I found your video on soluble and insoluble fibre it made a massive difference to my life, I don’t know why GP’s don’t tell us about it I really don’t.

      @@lewisgardner1660 interesting to read about your reaction to your tap water. I wonder what the cause is? Do you have old water pipes in your house or is it the same reaction to all tap water from your region? Re the coeliac blood test, you probably know that it will only tell you whether or not you carry the gene for coeliac disease. The only way to really then know if the blood test is positive is to eat a certain amount of gluten daily and then have a colonoscopy. Lewis I'm so gad to read that video helped your life, makes it all worthwhile indeed. Stay in touch if/when you have time with an update and all the best!

      When I was in hospital earlier this year a nurse told me it’s very common for people to have issues with tap water, when I first found it to be an issue I was at work and my Forman said have you noticed each time you drink tap water you are sick. It took me a while to find a bottled water that suited me, when I finally found a spring water I contacted the company in Yorkshire and they said a lot of people are the same, they told me they own another spring water company in a different location and people who can tolerate water from one site can’t tolerate it from the other, it all depends what it has naturally been filtered through, ie rock, sand, chalk ect ect I know here in England they put a lot of fluoride in the water to kill off the bugs. If we filter our tap water after a month the filter is black and nasty and they recommend the filter to be changed every three months. I think water is a big player in IBS issues to be honest as it is for me, I wonder if it is years of drinking contaminated water that caused the IBS in the first place, when you look back in history at our gran parents they didn’t suffer with all the gut issues we suffer with today and they lived on a lot of veg they grew themselves back then there were not so many chemicals added to our waters and foods like there is today. Sorry for long message. I can send message via Instagram if you prefer

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  2 года назад

      @Antonella Salvo lovely to hear from you. Dates are high in fructose sugars and therefore considered high FODMAP. Some extra reading tells me that 1/3 of a date is low fructose, ½ a date is moderate, and 1.5 dates high fructose. As for many of the FODMAP foods it’s a matter of elimination then reintroduction to determine your individual tolerance. As a personal aside, I don’t tolerate foods with high fructose well at all however I can tolerate dates which I don’t really understand. I hope this info is helpful!🙏
