  • New research shows that a long-term low FODMAP diet can be used effectively for IBS. This is huge as there have been many theoretical concerns about using a low FODMAP diet long-term, such as negative impacts to the gut microbiota, nutrition levels, and quality of life.
    However, we’ll cover each common criticism and answer them with science.

    I have kind of a life-long struggle with gut issues - mostly constipation, bloating, cramps (34 years, female). Diagnosis after each flare up (usually accompanied by acute gastritis) leads to "IBS", nothing we can do. I have annemia and unregular periods (diagnosed for PCOS and on Metformin though not overweight - 58kg at 168cm).
    I am currently going through one of my worst flare-ups within the past 4 years. I started researching on IBS, SIBO, etc. myself - and the low FODMAP diet (not so many resources available in Germany). That's how I came across your work and I am super glad that you shared this very recent study.
    I also tend to think that anemia AND my hormonal issues could be related to my gut. So, like you said in the conclusion part: Just give it a try, there is nothing to lose. I am currently checking which foods I want to include for my baseline elimination diet.
    I am already kind of sure I have huge issues with Fructans since I can't digest garlic and onions at all. And guess what, the chamomile tea I go recommended just made everything worse and I have an "onion breath feeling" in my mouth (drank it 12 hours ago).

    Thank you for this! Especially for identifying food fear as a risk factor that I have been experiencing with the reintroduction phase. I found the elimination phase much easier than the reintroduction when you have a social life and vacations thrown in! I feel much better about starting over and staying on the diet again for awhile when things quiet down now that I know I am not losing out on nutrients 😅. I am very grateful that I stumbled upon someone I can trust to present the "facts" and relate them to real life. Thank you!

    My wife has had gut issues for years. She’s been to multiple GI Drs, Nutritionists and Dietitians and they were all saying the same thing. They told her to increase her fiber and she was pretty much on a plant based diet.
    I said we have to change something because the advice they were giving clearly was not working.
    So I came across the Carnivore Diet. It was intriguing because so many people were saying it’s changed their lives in curing so many different illnesses.
    I knew this would be difficult because my wife HATES meat, so I said I would do it with her and see if I noticed any improvements.
    1st thing she noticed about after a week was she wasn’t getting any flare ups right after eating which was a huge victory. Next, after 2 weeks her bloating and stomach pain subsided and she was no longer having colitis. She cut out all carbs / sugars during this time and went from regular coffee to mushroom coffee. She is doing so much better.
    She is going to start introducing other foods back into her diet now minus sugar, all seed oils, nuts and keeping carbs under 20g a day. She’s going to introduce 1 food at a time and give it a week.
    I’m going to continue with just the Carnivore. Since I’ve started it I noticed I don’t have joint and muscle pain any more. I don’t have brain fog anymore, my body and mind feels lighter and clearer if that makes sense. My vision has improved, I no longer need cheaters. I have way more energy and the wildest improvement of all, I no longer need my narcolepsy medication.
    We eat twice a day 8am and 4 pm. We are not hungry in between meals, we don’t snack and all we drink is water after we put a little Celtic Salt on our tongue. She still has her mushroom coffee in the morning.
    I’m not saying it’s for everyone but it’s with looking into. One of the most compelling stories I’ve heard was a video called “ Ulcerative Colitis and Red Meat Warning “ by Dr Ken Berry. He interviews this amazing young man named Lee aka Kent Carnivore and it’s an incredible story that could possibly save thousands of people from going what he went through.

      @@suliyachannel1739 …. She had constant pain in her upper stomach. She would need to use the restroom instantly after eating sometimes. She would have diarrhea and colitis. She would have severe constipation. Tired no energy. She would barely eat anything and gain weight (plant based diet) no “junk food”
      I feel for anyone that is going through this.

      I feel for anyone dealing with this.

      I cut out carbs and coffee. Reintroduced veggies and fruits. No more coffee and no sugars aside from what's present in the fruits and veggies. I mostly eat ground turkey, eggs, mixed greens (kale, spinach, etc.), variety of colors like carrots and blueberries and blood oranges.
      Honestly, I feel amazing. It took a little while to build back up the fermented foods like kimchi and kraut and kefir and yogurt, but those are back in. Grains have been my big no-no, which is a shame, but I'm hoping to get oats back in. So far, a tablespoon of oats soaked overnight in kefir with a side of walnuts and macadamia has been fine.
      Basically, I'm so glad to get back to variety, and my body has rebounded tremendously as a result. The lesson? Never take any food group to an extreme. It's not an ideology; it's a way of being unique to every individual's build.

    I diagnosed myself with non celiac gluten sensitivity.
    I had diverticulitis/ diverticulosis ...not now. I had acid reflux, but not anymore.
    I believe it's a cause of many diseases, some serious Appendicitis, MS, ALS, Cholecystectomy, migraines, arthritis,ADHD,Bi-polar and many more.

    Chronic gut problems past 30 years, over the counter sensitivity plus some foods. Got worse last year, hair started to fall off, lost 20lbs in a month. I usually vomiting, and pain nonstop until whatever passes my system .The doctor, after several exams, keeps telling me I'm fine and that I may have IBS due to my sensitivity. My brain is taking the hit now.

    I did it for almost 4 months and I did loose a lot of bacteria ( I did a GI map afterwards) :/ and it was so much harder to eat a lot of things afterwards...but my blood work was all fine and healthy

    Dr Ruscio, thank you for being the beacon of light across my stormy seas! I love and look forward to your videos, and always learn from you! Science backed, thoughtful approach works for me. If only i could afford to hire you. What is your best advice for someone suffering burnout? I have histamine issues, IMo, leaky gut. Been doing this five years. I have seen imuprovements, but 2000 mg lGlutamine daily for three years, along with other detox and liver support, mindful eating, meal spacing, intermittent fasting, vagus nerve gargles, careful low FODMAP diet, i am burned out. Between low histamine and low fodmap, there is nothing left to eat. And my sibo has returned three times in five years. Maybe i should just go take the Rifaximin/Neomycin and get it over with. I cannot tolerate Sacc. Boulardi, so how do i recover from antibiotics if i take them? I am just tired. Help me focus!

    I've been following a low fodmap diet for a few years and I've felt really good on it. I still don't feel good eating a lot of high fodmap food such as garlic, onions and cauliflower.

    Thanks for the episode i enjoy watching your videos .
    Am having a bad dysphagia to foods and liquids and my own saliva , get worse at the end of the day , I've been using DAO enzyme via beef kidney supplements which helped me swallow a lot better than antihistamines , 3 months later got bit sickness and now nothing worked except for a new drug added called ketotifen and am now worried my body just gonna get used to drugs and am back to square one .
    Is the issue linked to the gut since Dao enzymes USED to work with me :/

    I tried probiotics for almost 3 months, but it didn't work.
    I have seen some videos where a deficiency of vitamin B can also affect the gut. What do you think?
    Could you make one video on Vitamins B (B1/B12) and their relation to the gut? Thanks :)

    Some people have different approach to ibs which includes antimicrobials can you touch on that?

      Great point. And I have touched on this in past videos. Here's a short one for example: ruclips.net/video/h4R214-qTZI/видео.html My usual recommendation is to support the microbiome first (with probiotics and an anti-inflammatory diet) and then consider antimicrobials later. The analogy I think of is the gut is like a garden, if you plant more good plants (bacteria) then you can help crowd out the bad and give them less of a place to return to. I hope that makes sense!

    How to recover from antibiotics.
    My gut is wrecked via antibiotics mostly...

    Dr. Ruscio, I have been taking the 3 probiotics and ran out of the lacto bifido one because it's only a 30 day supply opposed the the others which are 60. Am I supposed to give myself a month break from the lacto bifido before ordering the 3 probiotics again, or should I have ordered two bottles of the lacto bifido? Or what?

      I have 30 counts and 60 counts of all probiotics. So it seems you just had a different quantity this time! You're welcome to take a break from it or reorder the 30 count!

    Hey doc, can you clarify if H2S sibo is a special case? There are so many going on the internet that those sibo get worse on red meat and fat ingestion.

      I don't think so, be careful with those who get into the weeds with SIBO. If it feels good for you, its likely the right approach. Check with your doctor/healthcare provider.

      Absolutely yes. I am whole-foods, plant based (vegan). No problem for me so should be easy for omnivore (I don't know which you are) as meat and fish are not excluded from the diet.
