People have no idea how lucky they are that they can get 1.4 lenses with autofocus on APS-C for these prices. Less than 10 years ago, you could only buy a crop sensor camera, and maybe you had 50 1.8 to choose from. The rest of the APS-C lenses were 2.8 or had smaller apertures. And your only option was to buy a full frame 1.4 prime lens that costs more than the camera body, where you don't really get all the benefits of the lens you are paying for. Even for full frame, the lenses by Tamron, Viltrox, and Sigma are a great bargain.
For Fujifilm, video autofocus is snappy regardless of the settings. If you're buying the X mount version for video be ready to use manual focus for the smooth changes.
I definitely second this, even after firmware 1.07. very snappy, but even on slower settings it pulses oddly, as if it just wants to be snappy all the time

After watching quite some reviews the aperture ring for the Fuji version while shooting video it’s not smooth like on the Sony on AE unfortunately. Nevertheless workable and quite good value. I really like the size, price and what you get for it factor. In my opinion the right choice for an aps-c system. Offers a lot of photographic possibilities in a compact, affordable system. I tend to use the smaller lenses more often than my 27mm/1.2
Christopher, did you notice in your copy that the aperture is not perfectly circular when closed down (as when the camera is turned off?) I had this in my copy, and it kind of looks like it on your lens as well. I am curious if my copy was faulty or if this is simply how the aperture is designed.
It's perfectly normal for any lens. Because of the way the aperture works, it's only possible to maintain a perfect circle fully open. As you stop down the polygonal shape will gradually show. Nothing unique to the Viltrox here.
I am glad that now they can final get these affordable lens to more photograph, other else will be out of reach. Should be thankful for China who have been coming out some very good quality lens.
This lens compared to the Sigma 30/1.4? Looking at Chris' reviews, I think the sigma is better in the center at f/1,4 and in the corners at all apertures.
I think this is another example of a Chinese brand lens that is better in the reviews than on the market. The copy you’ve been sent is better than the models people can expect to receive, I think. While I’m reasonably happy with my viltrox 23mm, it’s clear that it’s nowhere near as sharp as your copy, and suffers from some field curvature. Chinese quality control is clearly not that hot, and I think it’s something you should be mindful of when posting these videos, Chris. I’d be happy to send you my version of the lens (I have a zonlai 22 that is very bad too) if you’re interested.
I also tried a Zonlai 22mm. "Murky corners and sides" is a good description. Anyway I do not see much use if I need to stop down to f/5.6 to get the same image quality as my zoom at f/5.6...
@@wanderingambience799 Well of course it was a slightly bad one, I basically said as much. It wouldn't have been noticeably bad had I not seen this review as it was still a decent performer. My point is, my experience with buying a lot of these Chinese branded lenses has been that they often differ in performance from the ones they send to RUclipsrs. The Zonlai experience was particularly egregious, as the replacement copy I received was still pretty dreadful.
What are your methods for getting extreme color fringing? I took pictures of black ink on white paper with this same lens, I didn't get nearly as bad as what is shown here, but it was still pretty bad.
I have this lens and it's indeed sharp and lets in a lot of light. However it (at least my version) does make quite a racket in continuous AF in video... the built in microphones in my A6300 pick up the noise easily and for nature sound ambience it's basically unusable. Hi, great clean reviews, but I have a technical question, some people defend that apsc lenses when used in full flame maintain the physical characteristic so a 23 f1.4 will always be a 23 f1.4, only cropeed if you don"t want the strong vignetting and that gives you the FOV of the apsc but the "perspective" and amount of light passing through to the sensor is given by the lens physical characteristics so it is still a 23 f1.4 ! Could you do a meanful technical test with "equivalent" lenses ? A apsc 24 1.8 vs a ff 24 1.8 cropped and with vignetting to really show the differences between them and help demystify this question please. thank you in advance and keep up the good work.
A lot has ben written about this. But in short: 23mm f/1.4 behaves like 35mm f/1.4 on FF does, for purposes of exposure and view. And you will feel that FF has less noise and more background blur. Alternatively, 23mm f/1.4 behaves like 35mm f/2.1 on FF. Noise and blackground blur are identical then. But exposure is off - you use ISO 200 instead of ISO 100 to get the same shutter and that makes noise identical to APS-C. And because you can lower ISO to 100, you know FF has more dynamic range..,
Had no idea this was aps-c specific. i guess they learned their lesson with the 85mm 1.8 V1- 1.5 pounds of glass and metal, total waste of material on aps-c. i sold my V1 brick and got the V2, better in every way.

this is not a small light lens. if you want small, get a pergear 25mm 1.8 for $65 if you like manual lenses. great focal length, extremely sharp but no autofocus. but 16 to 23 or 25 is quite a change. I personally don't find the 16 that useful unless you're shooting whole buildings. 23 or 25 on the other hand, VERY useful focal lenght on aps-c, you can do people, groups, entire rooms and street photo without distrotion but wide enough while keeping focus. if you have the kit lens, you could use that for the odd super wide angle shot, i always have it in my bag with my a6400

Did they improve anything on it or did they only downsize it?
@@Broodjemetbeleg much sharper wide open, much less purple fringing, better af tracking, and of course a lot lighter. didn't cost me much to switch, 30 bucks
Fuji 10 24 please!!!!
I use a6400 & sigma 16mm, its great but im so ready to let the lens go because its big n heavy 😁 i want to travel light, is it worth the change? Thx 😃🙏
this is not a small light lens. if you want small, get a pergear 25mm 1.8 for $65 if you like manual lenses. great focal length, extremely sharp but no autofocus. but 16 to 23 or 25 is quite a change. I personally don't find the 16 that useful unless you're shooting whole buildings. 23 or 25 on the other hand, VERY useful focal lenght on aps-c, you can do people, groups, entire rooms and street photo without distrotion but wide enough while keeping focus. if you have the kit lens, you could use that for the odd super wide angle shot, i always have it in my bag with my a6400
@@soneeeee4440 Thanks for the thought man.. 👍 but it's 405gr vs 260gr, lots of different there 😊 and i also need an autofocus lens, cos sometimes my wife use it.. And i definetely agree about the focal lenght, its the only one needed..
Not a bad looking lens...but with the Sigma prime trinity I wouldn't recommend the Viltrox against those amazing Sigma lenses for not a whole lot more money, at least on the Sony side of things.
For Fuji, this is a much better option that the Fuji version. I have the Fuji 23mm 1.4 and it’s honestly not worth the $700-800 price tag
aceflibble honestly I’ve been considering switching systems too. The lack of glass is really the issue.
Sony is lucky to have Sigma lenses.
What causes the color fringing?
Dispersion of light, similar to what happens in a prism. Red refracts more hence why purple fringing is most common
First! ahah
Great to see reviews of third party lens, more affordable for us mortals.
A great lens to shoot at f2.8 if you need the image quality, or f2.0 if you're into that bokah.
The chromatic aberration and lack of sharpness at f1.4 would keep me out of that range, unless desperate for light or wild bokah.
wow.
do you not sleep, just to be the first?
@@slammermx I was lucky to refresh my subscriber feed and see this "uploaded 43 seconds ago". So obviously had to comment "first"!
Isn’t that exactly the same as Tokina, which is releasing within this autumn.
From what I understand, those two companies are not related, however they're probably using the same factory
@@MichaelMoore-bx6st each lens has its own patent. even they are from the same factory, they cant be exactly the same in the spec and the number of glass in the lens
I wonder what will come out from Tokina. They look identical, but would they be good enough for Tokina?
That looks like average focus breathing
Viltrox is great, I hope they make 14mm or so ultra-wide-angle and a 50mm 1.4 for Fuji X-Mount.
Search for Viltrox lens Roadmap 😏
@@octaviomoran8475 Ah nice, thanks. Didn't know that existed. Seems there is a 56/1.4 and a 13/1.4 for APS-C on the map. Amazing.
Judging from their quality, I'd rather hope Sigma brings their 56 to the table. Those CA on 23 and 33 are crazy rainbow
Love to
Finally..
Considering the price, it looks really a valuable glass. Unfortunately, being a z6 user, i can only hope for third parties lenses in the future
Second, I have this lens too, hope it's a good one :)
hmmmm
Does it fit well in fullframe?
why affiliate link?
?
this lens opens to 1.4 but it's trash at f/4 or wider. PASS
Haha .... I watched your Fuji 33mm review today and wished you would also test the 23mm. Here you are :)
Sony and Fuji result should be similar?
This lens is a complete mess. I bought it for $200 off facebook marketplace.
Update your camera
Can you review the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM?
dude! What you talking about fokus pulling at 2:45 is complete off - this lens has normal fokus pulling for a 300$ Photo Lens - the lens are not made for Videographers - so please dont talk like that
is this full frame?
Did... you even watch the video?
Didn't you watch the video?
Color fringing is a bit too much, and minimum focusing distance of 40cm is nothing to write home about.. My sigma 19mm can focus to 20cm. I think I'm gonna keep the sigma..
Viltrox, please make one for the Z crop mount... PLEASE
I guess it's somewhere between the 30mm Sigma and the 16mm Sigma lens . . . .
Although its better than both for video due to no Focus breathing
Love the new lens at such a reasonable price
Hey Chris I love your videos but please make you video titles and thumbnails show when a lens is APSC not full frame
Amazing video as always and thanks for listening to your subscribers. However, I am quite disappointed with this lens :(
so basically this lens is trash.
