He says at 6:30 that apart from vignetting it is comparable in performance with the Sigma trio. So I think it is really the difference in focal lengths, that matters here. I don't own the Sigma 30mm but the Sony 35mm. I love this lens, but indoors it is sometimes not wide enough (family photos). I tested the Sigma 16mm for a month but I didn't like it. It is too wide for my use cases and there is no more portrait look in the photos. 23mm is equivalent to 35 in fulframe, which is often used for street photography, environmental portraits or wedding photography (e.g. the getting ready indoors). Therefore I really fancy buying a lens with this focal length! Now, the Viltrox or the Sony 24 (used to make it affordable) or waiting for the Tokina 23mm announced for the upcoming winter? Edit: he says apart from chromatic aberration the performance is equal to the Sigma trio, sorry for confusing this.
@@markusschewe2350 wow, I didn't know about these new Tokina Lenses for APS-C yet! Looks promising, hoping that it deals a better vignetting and chromatic aberration than the Viltrox ones.

There seem to be only slightest differences between both. I wonder whether for example different coatings will result in less chromatic aberration. I have the Sony Zeiss 24mm f1.8 for APSC , this is direct competitor for it. i am curious to see how it compares to that lens as this lens looks like it was based off of that lens.
Thanks for this review! Lens looks beautiful! Shots are crispy too! Been a fan of the viltrox 85mm f1.8 and its nice to see that they're making some new stuff! !
When I wrote viltrox about using my nex 5r camera for this lense all they said was they haven't tested using the camera. This lense should work with any apsc e mount Sony camera correct?. Thank you
I was and still am looking foward for your review of the Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 autofocus lens. its the first low cost autofocus kinda portrait lens we got on the APS-C E-mount side of things. Please be sure to take a look at it!
Generally, the lens at this point (firmware 1.1.1) is not suitable for some serious applications where we photograph some time-critical events. And it's not even about its AF speed, because this one is quite good (I have no comparison to SEL24F18Z or Zeiss for 1000 USD) but in 80-90% street photography (candid) it works. The problem, however, is with its unpredictability. Well, in critical situations it happens that the camera cannot sharpen the image. Pressing the shutter button halfway has no effect, additionally, it is not possible to take a picture (it does not react to full press). The only option is to turn the camera off and on. This situation occurs at several cases. a) when we quickly take several photos one after another - (but without using the burst mode) b) when we quickly switch between priority modes (e.g. from S to A or P) Another problem with autofocus was when focusing at infinity. In some situations (it was in dark scene) it was unable to do so. In addition, sometimes after switching the priority mode, the camera lost the ability to change the aperture (it set itself to F16 despite the fact that the ring was set to A - i.e. the value controlled automatically from the camera) A restart of the camera was required then. After some time, I noticed that sometimes the ring on the lens worked in such situations... (you could change F-Stop by rotating ring but not on camera itself) As for the pluses, 1.4 is sometimes useful (I tested it at the Eyes of Fire event - fireman shows tomiga.wordpress.com/2020/08/16/eyes-on-fire-2020-ogniste-igrzyska-na-brzegu-odry/ ) I also had a Sigma 56 F1.4 there, from which I took most of the photos - it was definitely less unreliable - (unfortunately Viltrox failed in many moments - required a restart of the camera - but when the photo was successful it was quite ok). Ultimately, however, I will probably leave this lens to myself, but at the moment I cannot recommend it to someone who expects reliability and trouble-free, especially when it comes to autofocus. I assume that some of these problems can be solved by updating the firmware (the lens has a USB socket, so the update should be trouble-free - at least at the connection level). I hope that Viltrox will deal with these flaws quite quickly ... because at the moment it looks like the lens has not been tested well ... and it should not hit the market in this form .
Somehow somewhere I read that there were similar problems which only occured with the older a6xxx but not with e.g. the a6400. Maybe it could be good to update the camera firmware, too?!
@@markusschewe2350 I had two bodies. A6000 and A6300 on both there were the same issue. Both cameras are updated to latest firmware. BTW on official Viltrox page there is info that lens is not fully compatible with A6000. Explanation is "Not fully means that after their is control ring is switched between AF and MF, the lens needs to be removed and reinstalled or the camera needs to be powered off and restarted." But I didn't change aperture ring and this note concerns only A6000 not A6300.
@nymergrand I even downloaded this update but after the experience of Fuji users (you can see some Polish youtuber video ruclips.net/video/GUe2PfHdbjM/видео.html - he claims that this update - for Fuji it is 1.0.8 - is even worst then previous) I found that I will not be laboratory rat, I will not install it and wait for the situation to develop. In the coming months I did not plan to use this lens intensively, so I will wait, maybe there will be another firmware soon ... If you are interested in this lens I suggest you wait until next year. Tokina plans to release a similar lens (optically practically the same) and maybe the electronics will be better. It seems that while Viltrox can deal with optics, it is not necessarily he same with electronics, and I don't think there is such a thing as a QA department there, and somehow I don't want to spend my time being a tester of their products. P.S. Due to the tense situation in Poland (mass strikes of women that spread to the whole society and even something like a civil war is likely), it may turn out that I will have to use the lens and install the update soon.
Need suggestion. I want a lens for video work and some Street photography, 23mm on APS-C is perfect for that. But I'm not sure of the quality of this lens. So I'm confused between sigma 30 and viltrox 23. Should I go for viltrox over sigma? Note: 30mm is bit too zoomed in for my usage.
I use it on Fujifilm, and it is very impressive. Fast, sharp and with nice rendering. Oh, and very cheap! Their 85mm is also really impressive, all though it is very big as it also works with fullframe sensors. Awaiting their 56mm f.1.4 which is supposed to come soon.
Looks like the APS-C and Full-Frame versions are the same price. Might as well buy the FF version to utilize 23mm full frame and 35mm equivalent in APS-C mode.
It is now delayed to upcoming winter. Indeed, recently there seem to be identical constructions for these lenses ayrn.io/tokina-viltrox-85mm-f1-8-same-copy-rebrand-rebadge/ , however, I wonder whether different coating could make a difference in chromatic aberration.
@@MrKreweesti I said similar, not same. 23 would be the most similar focal length available to consumers to the 30, is it not? Arthur, a little off topic but I would love some insight on how you handle your video exposure for the office/studio part? The windows/outdoors are brilliantly exposed all while you look great too inside. I’m totally trying to nail this myself at home with my 6500 and sigma 30 1.4 with a VND. Do you just expose the windows properly and then just add enough lighting inside to reach for final overall exposure goal? I’m finding every time I expose for the windows I can never bring the inside back in post. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

The 2 copies I bought had front focus issues. I couldn't deal with that and went with the sigma 23mm 1.4 much reliable lens. I could've gotten the Sony 24mm buts way too big for my liking.

@D! BRØS @D! BRØS I shot the in house intro/outro of my latest video with it. 1) With the latest firmware the lens performs well. No problems. I shoot 100% video and don't really experience any issues with image quality 2) I decided to bypass the Sigma 16. My kit lens has that focal length. I am going to add a 12mm Samyang F2 AF. I tried the non-AF version and liked the extra wide field-of-view. The 30mm puts me at near the "normal" lens at 45mm equiv where as I prefer the 35mm equiv for video. 3) I haven't experienced any unusable footage from lens aberrations ... corner sharpness. I don't use an on-camera mic so no lens noise issues. Also I live in the noisiest city you can imagine. I think it's a good lens for the price ... I bought an extra body for it. @@mohsin_sait why do you think 16-55 is sharper than 24 fix?
@@onyshchukv because the 16-55 is as sharp or betty than the Sigma trio and Sigma is better than Zeiss.
Great review . I would love to see you compare it with Sel - Zeiss 24mm please.
GREAT review. Really appreciate your providing real-world shots (portraits, etc.). Thank you!
Need a sigma 16mm vs this lens Review ASAP ❤️
Agreed!!!
Most definitely!
Yep
YASSS!
Sigma is sharper around the corners + no chromatic aberrations. Though 16mm is quite a bit wider than 23, so you can't compare it one to one
I have the Sony Zeiss 24mm f1.8 for APSC , this is direct competitor for it. i am curious to see how it compares to that lens as this lens looks like it was based off of that lens.
Have you purchase the viltrox 23mm to compare with your Zeiss 24mm?
I’m trying to choose between the two for video recording!
Thanks for this review! Lens looks beautiful! Shots are crispy too! Been a fan of the viltrox 85mm f1.8 and its nice to see that they're making some new stuff! !
I like how they try to mimic the orange G Master logo. Its a C Master lens
Hahaha I thought the same thing: cheeky!
Great Video! Mine arrives today.
Viltrox 23mm F 1.4 vs fujinon 23mm F 2. Which one better?
can you compare this lens and sigma 30mm 1.4? thx for review
When I wrote viltrox about using my nex 5r camera for this lense all they said was they haven't tested using the camera. This lense should work with any apsc e mount Sony camera correct?. Thank you
Hello, were you able to find out about support for viltrox lenses, old Sony nex 5r cameras?
So basically it's an affordable alternative to the Zeiss 24mm
which sharper/better between viltrox and sigma 30mm f1.4?
I was and still am looking foward for your review of the Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 autofocus lens. its the first low cost autofocus kinda portrait lens we got on the APS-C E-mount side of things. Please be sure to take a look at it!
Have they made it for Sony APSC E mount cameras ?
@@tushardani yeah, its for aps-c sony E mount
Wow! Thank you very much for listening to my suggestion regarding reviewing this lens. Thank you for another great video! This was very helpful
This situation occurs at several cases.
a) when we quickly take several photos one after another - (but without using the burst mode)
b) when we quickly switch between priority modes (e.g. from S to A or P)
Another problem with autofocus was when focusing at infinity. In some situations (it was in dark scene) it was unable to do so.
In addition, sometimes after switching the priority mode, the camera lost the ability to change the aperture (it set itself to F16 despite the fact that the ring was set to
A - i.e. the value controlled automatically from the camera)
A restart of the camera was required then.
After some time, I noticed that sometimes the ring on the lens worked in such situations... (you could change F-Stop by rotating ring but not on camera itself)
As for the pluses, 1.4 is sometimes useful (I tested it at the Eyes of Fire event - fireman shows tomiga.wordpress.com/2020/08/16/eyes-on-fire-2020-ogniste-igrzyska-na-brzegu-odry/ ) I also had a Sigma 56 F1.4 there, from which I took most of the photos - it was definitely less unreliable - (unfortunately Viltrox failed in many moments - required a restart of the camera - but when the photo was successful it was quite ok).
I hope that Viltrox will deal with these flaws quite quickly ... because at the moment it looks like the lens has not been tested well ... and it should not hit the market in this form
.
Explanation is
"Not fully means that after their is control ring is switched between AF and MF, the lens needs to be removed and reinstalled or the camera needs to be powered off and restarted."
But I didn't change aperture ring and this note concerns only A6000 not A6300.
I have been hoping you would review this!. It is a tempting option!
Not sure if I will go full frame so not sure about getting this lens
Hi Is there a video review in Low light Video ? ( VILTROX 23MM F/1.4 ) ,,Thanks ,
Need suggestion.
Same brother. What decision you made? I really liked the focal length and want to buy this over Sigmas. Please tell what you chose and why ?
comparison with the sony zeiss 24mm1.8!
Viltrox 23 1.4 vs viltrox 24mm f1.8 fe ... could u kindly compare them . Thanks
would love to see a comparison of this lens vs tamron 24 2.8! both budget friendly 35mm equivalents for a6k line
They released a aps-c version of the 85mm, way smaller
@@Broodjemetbeleg I got the mk2 version, and it is not smaller. "Just" 200 grams lighter :-) Still Fullframe size.
How bad is the CA?
Love the lens !! Great review got this lens after seeing this review as I was thinking about the sigma 16 or 30mm this was perfect in between.
3:19 was that car in motion at time you took the photo?
I wish Viltrox made MFT AF lenses, since their mft speedbooster/focal reducers are so popular
Looks like the APS-C and Full-Frame versions are the same price. Might as well buy the FF version to utilize 23mm full frame and 35mm equivalent in APS-C mode.
I don’t know of the FF model.
Another great review. I couldn't tell the difference between them. Amazing.
Great video. Good to see Viltrox is making AF lenses for Sony E Mount cameras.
I really miss the 35mm prime experience I had with my old RX1. This might just be the perfect addition to my 16-55g! Thank you for the review :)
Great review. I have this on my Fuji and it is awesome.
Hi Arthur! Which one do you prefer for travel photography, 23mm viltrox or 30mm sigma? Thank you
Which one will be better for travel landscape/portrait shots? This or the 16mm sigma?
Im looking forward to tokina 23mm aps-c, they announced summer, but there is still no additional news. Someone heard about it?
It is said that the Viltrox and the Tokina are the same, at least concerning the construction - just for a different price.
Arthur, which one do you like more: Sigma 30 or this Viltrox 23?? Seems similar price point, and focal range!
I would take the Viltrox because its a bit wider and you can crop in when you want the lenght of the Sigma.
How is 23 similar to 30? The one is 35mm (equivalent to Full-frame) and the other 45mm, as in 50 mm roughly.
@@MrKreweesti I said similar, not same. 23 would be the most similar focal length available to consumers to the 30, is it not? When cross shopping prime lenses for sony apsc users, those two focal lengths seem probable to come up in peoples comparisons, are they not?
this is like me picking out "as in 50mm roughly" and saying 'how can you say 45 and 50 are roughly the same' lol
theres no fast 23 fl in apsc for sony, im just wondering how sigma 30 compared since focal length isnt far off, thats all
The Sigma because chromatic aberration is better controlled, better autofocus, and I think it’s sharper.
Sigma 30 better AF?! I had a few lenses on my α 6XXX series (16-50, 55-210, 10-18, 35F18, 50F18, SIGMA 16, 30, 56 F1.4) - my experience: SEL35F18 has the best, SIGMA 30 F1.4 the worst AF..
How good is it compared to the Sony Zeiss E 24mm f/1.8 which cost 3x more ?
Que pena que a esta pregunta no haya respuesta. Saludos cordiales.
I m consindering between this viltrox and the Sony Zeiss 24. What would you prefer, you tested both right? And how is the Autofokus difrence?
if it is hunting for focus, then it does not support phase detection autofocus and only contrast autofocus. I would say, forget about eye autofocus with this lens. Is it correct?
I'd like to see a fokus comparission between the sel35f1.8, Sigma 30f1.4 & Viltrox 23f1.4 on the Sony a6400... Fokusspeed & Accuracy
Hey Arthur. Appreciate all the reviews you've done. Between canon sigma and viltrox which prime set would you recommend.
have you reviewed the 70-180 tamron?
for one lens solution sigma 16 1.4 or this viltrox ?
The 2 copies I bought had front focus issues. I couldn't deal with that and went with the sigma 23mm 1.4 much reliable lens. I could've gotten the Sony 24mm buts way too big for my liking.
Great review. Auto focus!!! Thanks for making me want to buy yet another lens. 🤑
Thank you so much love your videos. Can you do a comparison to the sigma 56? I have the 56 but I need a wider lens.
Bought one here in Saigon. No regrets, it's a great value and the image quality and AF is great. The color quality of the images on my camera look great with the lens. For my use, nearly 100% video ... I think this lens is a real performer.
Hey, I also need it for Travel and Cinematic videos. Its been 3 months,
(1) How was your experience with this lens please tell in DETAIL.
(2) I really liked the focal length than Sigma 16 and 30. But will you recommend this lens over them? 16 is wide and 30 is tight. I really want this focal length as it is the most versatile.
(3) Does the 2 main CONS of this lens matter for video work. One, Chromatic Aberations (will it ruin my shots). Two, Autofocus sound (will it be recorded in rode videomic pro) ?
I would be really grateful if you answer my these 3 questions. It will save me a lot of time. Please reply 🙏
@D! BRØS @D! BRØS I shot the in house intro/outro of my latest video with it.
1) With the latest firmware the lens performs well. No problems. I shoot 100% video and don't really experience any issues with image quality
2) I decided to bypass the Sigma 16.
And have a gimbal setup I use exclusively with that setup. It's very useful.
Stay in touch, I'd be very interested in your decision. My email address is in description on all my videos too.
Good Luck!
Mr Arthur, do mind reviewing the Viltrox 33mm F1.4 when u have it, and compare it to the Sony 35 f1.8..it will be an interesting comparison for the sharpness and bokeh. Thanks.
Would you ever try a Fujifilm camera like the X-T4? The user experience and lenses are great, and the film simulations give great sooc results.
hola Amigo.
Awesome review! I was wondering if saving a $100 over the sigma 16mm is worth it. I read nothing but good review of the sigma, but I want something a little more compact.
Jeff Keo well, 16mm FL and 23mm is quite a difference. That would translate to 24mm and 35mm FF and honestly Sigma feels too wide to be a daily lens. I have 16mm and 35mm 1.8, and I use 35mm like 90% of the time
what with horizon?
Looks like I purchased one as they just released it and no review yet. Finally a 35mm equivalent that is sharp, minimal distribution and the AF is fast. I love this focal length, I think it's the best of both world. Indoor/outdoor. The vignette is strong at 1.4, also the purple fringing is pretty noticable as well, should be easily corrected. I have an issues with the aperture ring. It's too smooth. It changes as you take the camera out from the bag. Oh, I also realize the hood can be over twist. That was my take on it. Otherwise a very nice lens.

@@thr6453 I love this lens. Besides the purple fringing at wide open, the lens is an excellent all arounder. Im not a fan of the 16, too wide and the 30 is too tight. I love the 35mm equivalent. It's just perfect for indoor/outdoor. Oh, one other thing. The apperture ring is a bit too smooth, I believe you'll enjoy this. You should consider the Tamron 17-70 as well. @@swonghobby Yes Tamron is on my list and I will buy that too. But for now, I am on a budget and I am buying A6400 without Kit lens. Also I want to know if some issue of viltrox are improving after firmware updates? Is purple fringing controlled an AF noise controlled now?
@@thr6453 I don't make videos with the camera, so I wouldn't know about the noise. The purple fringing is east to correct in post.most of the time, I don't shoot wide open anyway. If you had to pick only lens to buy; This lens or the Sigma 30mm 1.4?
2:45 best photo 💥 good work focus 😂
Makes me wonder if we are being fleeced by the big oems for the astronomical prices we pay for native lenses. I had the Zeiss 24 and it looks like the viltrox can hang.
wish there were more video examples but good video man
Viltrox is doing some great stuff here!!!
2:35 did you add motion to the photos?
Thanks for the review. I think the closest competitor will be the Zeiss 24mm 1.8.
hows the auto focus on the a6000 with this lens? I'm stuck between the sigma 16mm 1.4 and this lens. which one should i get?
Can this lens focus on close subject like food/product video? Not macro level of course.
I bought a Viltrox 56mm for my A6400. Great IQ, but I had autofocus issues with aperture smaller than f1.8. Simply AF worked only in the center of the frame.... I asked for a refund.
Has the 23mm lens the same incompatibility?
Does anyone know if the CA on this lens has been fixed or is even possible to be fixed with a software update? I thought you could only fix that with certain glass. I have the Sigma trio but I really want a 35mm FOV and this is really the only lens I like so far. Sigma put out the 18-50 2.8 now so I'm torn between the 2. Decisions decisions.
Great review.
Amazing video 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Does it also work with Nex 5N? How are the photos?
Is there a canon mount one for this lens? I can't find it anywhere in Australia
FYI this lens had a price bump it’s now $329. But the discount code still works. Unfortunately at that price jump I’m more apt to wait for a sale again. The new video showcase a lens for less.
Image stabilization missing on both body and lens.
Saludos cordiales.

Will the auto focus work if I mount it to a Sony A7C?
How do u reccoment it for portriats ?
Hey Arthur and everybody - would it be helpful to get this Viltrox 23mm if I already have the Sigma 16mm 1.4 and Sony E 35mm 1.8 oss? Would this 23mm focal range be too similar to either of those lenses, or would it still add enough diversity to the type of shots I can make?
Hello Arthur
Thanks for the great video, I've been following you're high end comparisons of different gears and I would like to get your advise on this lens as I need a wide angle, fast lens for my m50 talk head videos (I have sigma 30mm, 1.4 but my space is tight to use it especially in cropped 4k).
I'm choosing between this lens (viltrox) and the 21mm 1.4 manual Samyang (rokinon)
I would love to get your advise on which lens would be better in terms of quality and versatility, since they're both sold within the same price range in Australia
N.B. I have no problem using manual lens.
Thanks in advance for your help
Cheers

hilarious that this comes out right as i sell my sony a6400, in part for no reasonable options in this focal range! Oh well, there were other reasons for the transition but i'm glad to see that a6xxx users will have such a wonderful and affordable option now!
You can have zeiss
5:41 insane amount of chromatic aberration / purple fringing on that shot
What camera did you use when rotating the lens at your palm? its pinky color ;)
this lens is better or sony 35-f1.8 prime?
There are 2 NEW Lenses listed for E-mount APSC in the Viltrox Store
33 mm 1.4 AF
56 mm 1.4 AF
I would suggest to Test the Sigma vs Viltrox
Sigma 56 mm 1.4 vs Viltrox 56 1.4
Sigma 30 mm 1.4 vs Viltrox 23 mm 1.4 vs 33 mm 1.4
...
Okay Arthur! I’ll buy this one for my a6000.
Would you recommend this viltrox 23mm over the Sony Zeiss 24 mm 1.8?
For APSC, yes. The zeiss is nice but too expensive for a lens that isnt sharper than a sigma prime. The 30mm Sigma F1.4 is sharper.
@@ArthurR thank you 🙏🏿
The bokeh is quite harsh, imo, especially in the green foliage area
To my eyes it looks quite a lot like old vintage Zeiss with their almost swirly or bubble bokeh, which people pay tons to experience.
I own this lens and I use it on a a6600. For portraits, specially in AF-C with face and eye detection, taking pictures orizontally it's perfectly nail focus, but when I go in portrait mode... 1 in focus each 10 and the lens is continously breathing as crazy, seems confused and can't find the subject... Unuseble, sadly. Please, someone else experienced the same issue?
