In my years in photography, I realized that you don't need the best, sharpest, most expensive lens if you are color grading/running presets to edit your photos. Trust me.. these lenses are good enough for 90% of the time, probably 95% if you are not professional.
Omar, after months of watching your videos, I've just picked up an X-T20 and I am LOVING it! Your content has been invaluable in getting a running start. I've been shooting with my collection of vintage Nikon and Minolta glass, and can't wait to see where this journey leads. Thanks for such great content so far, I look forward to following along!
I had the X-T20. The only thing that really bugged me is that the EVF colour is different to the external display. It's hard to judge the colour adjustments when it doesn't represent the real thing.
Love this Omar. Killed it per usual. There's no one else on RUclips that does Fuji stuff that's just so natural and can deliver content like you. Just sounds like sitting at a bar, talking with my photo nerd friend. Thanks dude!!

@ 0"43 this photo man ! it's like at the same time super chill and perfect composition, light, sharpness in the eyes, beautiful blurry BG, super sun backlight. Everything is perfect and so spontaneous at the sametime. It would win a price.
Thanks for this review. I got this lens today and paired with the Fuji X-T5, it’s awesome! There is a little vignette in the corners but for my use case (mainly indoor shots at wide aperture) it’s a nice effect that adds some character 😊
I am very happy with the image quality of my copy of this lens. 18 months after I bought the lens, it stopped communicating with the camera body when in aperature priority mode. It was always shooting at F/16 (AF was not affected). So I switched over to shutter priority and used the aperature ring on the lens to set my F-stop. I continue to use the lens as much as when it was new.
The 7 artisans 25mm f1.8 gives a wonderful bokeh, and you can get super close. Also renders colours on Fuji just beautifully. A fantastic inexpensive lens.
You are soooo much fun to watch! Just one thing: you know the adage, "Less is more.". Well, I would apply that to your thumb snapping. Thanks again for your channel: it is one of my "go2s".
Thanks for this review, I was going to pull the trigger on this lens but I have the 18-55 and the 35mm f2 (my fave lens) so your review saved me £300. I can see how this lens would be useful indoors in low light but had not really considered the minimum focus distance and I too like to get close.
A really thorough and enjoyable review, Omar. Thank you. However, I would like to point out that you maybe confusing some viewers on what bokeh is. You say that the bokeh on the kit lens is better because it focuses closer and therefore gives a more blurred background. Whilst it is a fact that the background is more blurred it is not a fact the bokeh is necessarily better. For example, if the 50-230mm f4.5-6.7 focuses closer at 56mm compared to the 56mm f1.2 there is no way that the bokeh on the 50-230mm would be better than the 56mm both shot at say f4.5. Furthermore, even at smaller apertures the 56mm would still have better bokeh than the 50-230mm shot @4.5. So, bokeh is not just about the amount of blur but more importantly the quality of the blur. I’m sure you get it but new to photography people may think that more blur = better bokeh.
Thank you very much for the review. Actually I find the 23mm focal lenghth somewhat challenging in terms of the choices you have on the fuji system. Both the f1.4 as well as the f2 have there issues. Especially the minimum focal distance. If the 23 f1.4 would be on par with the 16mm f1.4 it would be a no brainer, even at that high price. The 23f2 is just too soft wide open. If I need 23mm I pick the 18-55 as well. The results are more than just fine and do not justify spending that much extra money on the available primes. Once my budget allows it I rather consider the x100v as my 23mm source.
@@pandasinspace3560 I have the xt20 and the xt3 and to be honest for 90% of what I do the xt20 is just fine. I really cant tell any difference in image quality .

Hi Omar great video👍😄. Looking in to the series of Viltrox/fuji lenses..... will you come with a video of the 13mm 1.4 Viltrox ? People think it is awesome ☺️
You are right, the minimum focusing distance is important. That’s not good on the viltrox, which makes the decision more difficult. I was planning to get it soon.
@@kienyulim8651 I did not get it. Since I have relied too much on youtube reviews in the past and made purchases based on them, and then learned my lesson, I am much more cautious in making decisions based on these. Soon after I wanted to get the Viltrox 23mm, I found out that Fuji is planning a revamp of the 23mm! So I will wait for that and see how it goes, what the results will be. In the meantime, I am using some great manual vintage lenses. I am not a professional, just a hobbyist, so there was no urgency to get the lens.
What’s not mentioned in this video is the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 actually produces near record breaking MTF scores in the center, besting the Fujifilm 23mm f/1.4. The only thing is the corners are significantly softer than the Fujifilm 23mm. Not a fan of zooms, let alone variable aperture zooms like the 18-55, but that lens is twice the price of the Viltrox, and much slower. I prefer to use Fujifilm lenses if possible, unless there is a banger that’s not available or out of my budget.
So I've got a little question. I'm switching from Nikon to Fuji (xt-20) and I mainly shoot street photography. On my Nikon, I used a 35mm and an 85mm. I already ordered a Viltrox 85 for the Fuji and I was wondering if I should go a little wider and get the Viltrox 23mm or just stick to the Fuji 35mm F2. What would you recommend?
Nice review! I prefer a stepless aperture lens for video because it allows you to adjust in between stops during recording, whereas a stepped aperture you got a big ugly click you'll need to edit around!
Great review and samples! Do you have any AF accuracy issues with AFS/AFC in burst shots? There's been a couole of reports that it misses focus a quite a few shots in a burst or single shots but then other shots are in focus. How's AFC for tracking for moving kids compared to say the 15-45mm, 18-55mm, xf23 f2.0, or Xf35 F2.0? Did get lens at B&H? They don't seem to have stock yet.
Great stuff Omar! Funny but you actually sold me more on the idea of the Fujinon 27mm f2.8 Pancake! Also my trusty 18-55 Kit earned a bit more respect due to the minimum Focus Distance! WHO KNEW? :)
Thanks for all the Fuji videos. They are entertaining and educational. Have you tried the Viltrox with Aperture Priority? Jorelle Gates has a review of the Viltrox 85 and he says that “when using auto shutter you get flickering”. I haven’t found that statement anywhere else, but it makes me hesitate on buying a Viltrox. I’m hoping he just has a lens with a bug. Thanks.
On your "funnest prime" video, you said that you like the fujifilm 23mm 1.4 the most. How does the viltrox hold up against the xf23mm 1.4? Thanks! Love your review vid btw. Keep it up!
Really good point about subject distance and blur (and why lens tests that show flowers, miniatures and toddlers are useless). Unfortunately, the finger snapping in this video is really hurting my ears, worth reconsidering for future videos?
as always, informative and entertaining. good to see you and yours are well (and masked!) thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
The image from Viltrox appears to be slightly bigger than that from the XF. Maybe the actual focal length of Viltrox is longer than 23mm, say 25mm or 26mm.
Really love your videos. I shoot just for fun and these days being unable to travel looking to try out night city photography. How does this lens do at night? Any other lenses you like better?
In all your shots the vignetting is really noticeable. Plus the closer focusing distance is significant. Yes it is good for the price, but I wont get rid of my 23 fuji for this. I just got my Viltrox today but this same issues were present in my own tests. Therefore, I'll stick with my Fuji.
I love the way that those prices are just casually dropped in, but you don't have to spend that sort of money. I also don't get why people confuse DOF with Bokeh .. they are not the same thing. Cheap isn't necessarily bad, and most people can't tell the difference.... Take the Zeiss Batis for example with its high price and sub par performance. People are also concentrating too much on buying a lens with a wide aperture, and then not being able to shoot successfully wide open.
When you say this lens is 'Go'... does that mean you're selling it? 😅 or that it's good? I bought one last week and I like it, but I cant help but feel I dont trust the Viltrox name and also I've ran into some AF issues. I might return it while I can...
i dont mind the plastic on my xc35 and I'm really happy there is no chance to turn the aperture ring. I wish I has more lenses like this. I put my other on A to get the control on my dials.
Nice video! Just decided to sell my Canon gear and pick up a used Fuji X-T4. Very excited! This seems like good, affordable prime to start with. You say that the aperture isn't clicky, does that mean that it moves continuously between the stops, like declicked cinema/video lenses? That's s feature for us video people...
Oh, watched to the end now, if I understand it correctly the aperture has discreet steps though the aperture ring changes between the different values without clicks/bumps
I'd love to know why you ended up choosing the Fuji 23mm 2.0 instead of this one apart from maybe size, knowing that you already said that the f2 was soft wide open and pretty bad with close focusing.
reference the aperture ring... there is a detent at the "auto" end but it is very soft and easily "bumpable". Very frustrating and Viltrox says it's common to the lens.
I will be shooting my first wedding and I was wondering which 23mm i should get. The Fuji 23mm 2.0 or Viltrox 23mm 1.4? The Fuji 1.4 is sadly out of my budget. Also, i own a 16mm 1.4 from sigma and 35mm 1.4 from Fuji, would the 23mm be necessary? Thank you for the vid! :)
Hi Omar, appreciate your style of presentation. I own a XT20 here in the Philippines and fighting with lens mould on my 18-55 and even M42 Pentax lenses. Any ideas ?
Potatoe Joe it’s the heat and humidity. I think you need a special storage case where you pump out the air and put those sachets to absorb any moisture in the air. Also using the lens and letting sunlight through the lens often will help.
I also stay in a very humid environment. What I did was to purchase a clear storage case and I put 2 rechargeable cilica boxes inside with my lenses.. every month I will put the lenses under a uv bulb...4 years and no mould. Give it a go.
In my years in photography, I realized that you don't need the best, sharpest, most expensive lens if you are color grading/running presets to edit your photos. Trust me.. these lenses are good enough for 90% of the time, probably 95% if you are not professional.

Unfortunately, the finger snapping in this video is really hurting my ears, worth reconsidering for future videos?
as always, informative and entertaining. good to see you and yours are well (and masked!) thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
For the price I could easily live with all the downsides of this viltrox lense. But if come out a xc 23 f/2 cheaper I’ll go fort the fuji
The image from Viltrox appears to be slightly bigger than that from the XF. Maybe the actual focal length of Viltrox is longer than 23mm, say 25mm or 26mm.
Thanks for the video! Should I buy this if I already have the kit lens? Or should I just buy their 85mm?
Really love your videos. I shoot just for fun and these days being unable to travel looking to try out night city photography. How does this lens do at night? Any other lenses you like better?
Opening music getting the knee a bouncin! Got dang!!
Love the vid & the Seiko sarb033 👀
I'd love to know why you ended up choosing the Fuji 23mm 2.0 instead of this one apart from maybe size, knowing that you already said that the f2 was soft wide open and pretty bad with close focusing.
please use this lens more, prefer this one than xf 23mm f2.0, there is firmware update lately.
The viltrox 23mm is a nice lens, but bought the 23mm f2 fugi also because its weather sealed, I use both of them and enjoy the lenses greatly,
does viltrox's 23 & 56 good enough for portraits, does chromatic abbreviations create any problems
Soooo... you do the Conspiracies' focus walk?! Nice!!! My two favorite comedic photography U2bers blended :D
reference the aperture ring... there is a detent at the "auto" end but it is very soft and easily "bumpable". Very frustrating and Viltrox says it's common to the lens.
X-T20 is the best camera ever honestly
I will be shooting my first wedding and I was wondering which 23mm i should get. The Fuji 23mm 2.0 or Viltrox 23mm 1.4? The Fuji 1.4 is sadly out of my budget. Also, i own a 16mm 1.4 from sigma and 35mm 1.4 from Fuji, would the 23mm be necessary? Thank you for the vid! :)
great video Omar!!!!
The reason I watch your channel is 90% for entertainment, the rest is for lenses and cameras 😆
I thumbs up before I even watch, because Omar.
