I got this lens for 320euro + a6000 for 390euro two weeks ago and i think its no brainer for that price, as for lens it has bit vinjette at corners at f1.4 and is bit soft at 1.4, but if your not pixel peeper at 200% or more its superb, and f2 and further its super sharp, very happy with lens, autofocus is accurate, fast and reliable. Review is 100% of my opinion after 2 week of use.
Good to hear others enjoying it. I’m gonna start utilizing it more at f2 f2.8. I may do a fun “sharpest lens I own” video and see which one comes out on top. I’m not a pixel peeper but it may be fun!
@@kyletaggart :-) it should be fun:-), as for me that softness dont exist because i like to print out my pictures on 10x15, yes im bit oldscool, but the feeling im getting when looking and touching real photo is way more satisfying than stearing at monitor:-D And sharpnes at 1.4 is still excellent for price eaven looking pictures on 42inch big TV screen. And focal lenght was big deal for me because 30mm is too tight for big building photography and indor shoots, as i like to travel a lot and use one lens only.
There's 2 versions of the Sony APSC pancake lenses you mentioned: 20mm and 18mm. They are very convenient, allowing you to fit a Sony camera in your pocket. But you pay the price with heavy distortion on both. The 18mm is worse, make sure faces are in the very middle of the frame. I really wish there was a better pancake lens available. I couldn't figure out if there was any in-camera compensation on the 6700 available for this lens, unlike my more modern 11mm Sony f1.8 lens As for the Viltrox, I think the 27mm is the one to buy.
I love this even more now that you mentioned the manual aperture ring! Coupled with gold “AF 23/2.4 E” gives it that old school feel. Is there a resurgence of old school nostalgia, what with the looks and feel of the Sony A7C? Anyways, coming from the experience of using the manual Meike 35mm f1.4 lens, I get the thinking behind the aperture settings - switching from Auto to Manual aperture control, you’d want to ensure maximum depth of field (DOF) so that as much as possible is in focus. This is especially important when you’re on the street and you’re trying to catch that fleeting “moment” (as Henri Cartier- Bresson puts it). If you switch from auto to manual at f1.4, the DOF is paper thin and you might miss the subject.
very good point. I think at first I was shooting everything at f1.4, I mean, it's fun right? but as I use it more and more, it blows me away at f2, and 2.8.
I've got it on an XT20, and it pleasantly surprised me! Wasn't expecting viltrox of all companies to make such a well rounded lens. Now that I've used it a bit I'm very interested in that new 56mm 👀

Hi! Saw in another video that you also use the Sigma 16mm f1.4. How would you say this compares to that? Would keeping both be somewhat redundant? Thanks in advance for your advice and great video!
Got a question, on the a6000 when you use the aperture from Auto-manual, or vice versa - do you need to reset the camera? or you can just do either-or on the fly? thanks
I have the 30mm 1.4 (which I love) but I'm so torn as I think 23mm is the perfect all around indoor/outdoor focal length. If you pair it to a 50-56mm for portraits you have a perfect combo I think. But I'm so reluctant to either have both 23mm and 30mm or sell my 30mm. What do you think having used both lenses? Does it make sense to have them both?
I personally don’t think it makes sense to have both. Gonna be limited times where you are choosing one or the other I think before you walk out the door. However that’s up to you!
Not sure honestly. I’m impartial to the aperture ring. I like it, but I don’t need it. I guess right now I’d say the Viltrox but that’s because I’ve been using it for the last few weeks. It’s really a coin flip for me.

high school student on a low budget here: I'm looking for a lens that can kinda do a bit of everything, as in I can mount the camera at my computer to use as a webcam for all my zoom calls with my school, but also to be able to be used to take portrait photos with family and friends, and also film video for events and recordings. I'm pretty much between the sigma 16mm 1.4 and this lens, but need some help deciding. any help is appreciated :D
It is unfortunately not as sharp as sigma 16/30/56mm wide open. To be honest, I'm afraid of using the viltrox wide open, because I'm spoiled of using the sigma trio which is really sharpness starting from 1.4. The Viltrox comes close around 2.0 and above. But for Instragram 1.4 is ok.
Great video! I am in the middle of this buying decision: I have Pentax DSLR (several primes and zooms), and I am looking to add a system for walk-around and landscape, Looking to save weight/size. The most weight saving would be the pancake @ f2.8, but better low light with the Viltrox @ f1.4. Right? Thanks much! Good job! JW
How come no one ever says how far they are from the object they are photographing? I am trying to find a lens that's good for Zoom calls that naturally blurs the background. I have the Sigma F1.4 30mm, but I have to sit very far from the camera to fit in the frame and then the bokeh is not very strong. Any recommendations for what I am trying to do?
Right, the closer you are to the lens, the more the background will be blurred behind you. If you have limited space, then a wider lens would be better suited, however there may be some distortion based on how close you’re sitting as well. For my most recent videos I use the Viltrox 23mm f1.4, and I’m probably 4-6ft from the end of the lens. I used to use the Sigma 16mm, which will allow you to get much closer to the lens. You can test out framing if you have the kit lens. Put that on, sit where your comfortable or your preferable placement, then see how much of your body is in frame at 16mm, 23mm, 30mm etc. That would give you a better idea of what focal length you may need. 👍🏻 if possible, you could always back the camera up, behind your laptop/monitor, but that depends on your space.
Question. I have the sigma 30mm and the 56mm I used to shoot with the sigma 16mm as well but it was damaged. I don't want to buy the 16 again but still want something that I fairly wide. Does it make sense to get the 23mm if I have the 30mm for videography
Depends on your use case. Portraits, senior photos, I’d take the Sony 50mm f1.8. For all around, walking around, vacation, etc. I’d do Viltrox 23mm f1.4.

@@kyletaggart my Sony 55-210 has gotten me a few nice portrait shots with the right amount of light and distance. But that Viltrox 23mm 1.4 is calling my name. I think it’ll do my A6000 well.
I've owned multiple Sigma lenses for Nikon and they've all had backfocusing issues. It's apparently quite common. I know they're cheaper than most of the competition but for the price it's still pretty inexusable. Moving onto Sony and wanted to know if this was a good Sigma alternative so thank you.
I don’t back button focus. The only Viltrox I’ve had some issues with is the 56mm. It focuses to the background sometimes. Sony doesn’t make a 24mm f1.4 for APSC, if they did that would be awesome. But this lens is unique and I honestly enjoy it a ton.
Great review, can you do review on Viltrox 33mm f1.4 and put it against the sony e35mm f1.8...might want to to replace my sel35 for the Viltrox for more bokeh..but would love to see comparison before i jump.
I have both of those Sony pancake lenses, one 20mm and one 28mm... They are not great, but your A6xxx with that lens will fit into your pants pocket! One is much sharper than the other, but I don't remember which, its a long time ago that I used them.
I have read that this lense is not fully compatible with the a6000. Also i have read that some user have got problems with the auto aperture when switching the mode and the only way to solve it is by detaching the lense. Have you experienced such issues? 😬
Buen video, buena explicacion. No entiendo ese empeño que tienen algunos fotografos de mal emplear una buena camara y un buen lente tomando fotografias en vertical de manera indiscriminada, como si fuera un telefono celular.
for such video close up shoulder like you do in your video, which one should i buy? sigma 16mm or viltrox 23mm? and how about for overhead table videography?
Close up shoulder? If you mean the framing I do for the video I’ve been using the Viltrox 23mm but I’ve used the sigma for years. Both work well. As for over the top view, the sigma sees more with the wider view, but there is some barrel distortion. The Viltrox would need to be higher up bc of the focal length but it has less barrel distortion.
Gotcha. Yeah I now switched to the Viltrox, mainly just bc I wanted to try a different lens, and it is a slightly more flattering look than a wider lens.
Great review.... Reviews.... I just bought sigma 16mm 1.4... Now i am looking for something more like for portraits (sigma does pretty good job... But its not super easy do do good portraits) So, as a walkaround and portrait lense.... Which focal lenght would you recommend? 30-35mm? I use sony a6000
The 30mm is gonna be better for portraits, but I kinda like the 24mm better for walk around/everyday stuff. Either way, I don't think you'll be disappointed though!
Hey buddy i just grab this lens for my A6000, somehow i can't change aperture on the lens ring, only able to change through camera dial, are you facing this issue on a6000?
No. You sure it’s not in “A” mode on the lens? Also there is a firmware update as well for the lens (micro usb plugs directly into the lens. You don’t need the firmware update, but if you’re having an issue it wouldn’t hurt.
Hola amigo. Vi tu video y mencionaste el 24 1.8 de Sony, ¿lo tienes? me interesa saber si ¿viltrox 23 1.4 tiene mejor nitidez que el Sony? independiente del precio. Gracias de antemano. Saludos cordiales.
It’s not all the way in A. The A is close to the f16. There is a small notch (feeling) once it goes in A. I talked about this in the video, as it’s a small con for me. You either control the aperture via camera dials when having it in A (and it can possibly get bumped out of it to f16). Or control it via the aperture ring manually, and f1.4 and other lower apertures are on the other side of the aperture ring.
@@kyletaggart thanks for replying. I did some research n found that if I turn off the camera, remove the lens, put the lens back, and turn it back on it worked. I can now control the aperture via camera BUT I can also control the lens via camera even if the lens is out of the "A" setting. WIERD!

I am thinking about buying this lens for Fuji, however it is difficult to decide as half of the people that used it say it is brilliant while other half says it is garbage. I am aware of Fuji fanboyism and rage whenever someone says that Fuji is not perfect and that there is something else that works as good or better, but still difficult to decide. My problem is basically the CA amount, it seems like it has it a lot wide open, also flaringb is very bad. The rest is just ok for me, but CA and flaring make a lens looks and feels cheap. BTW the music is magnificent, so tired of crappy modern music everyone else uses for their videos. 🖖
Me personally, unless it’s crazy, I don’t really notice CA. The vingetting is the biggest thing for this lens at f1.4. I also only tested on Sony, not Fuji.

If I could only have one prime lens along with the kit lens? hmmm, I'd probably forgo the kit lens and prime lens combo and just the the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8. It's a lovely, well rounded, do a lot (not all) lens. But yes, the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 might be my pick for one prime lens with the kit lens. Or the Sony 35mm f1.8 OSS.

Good job! JW
Absolutely better low light at f1.4 with the Viltrox. Thanks!
I wonder why they did 23mm rather then just 24? Its an odd MM but your review is great
My guess would be that 23 with a 1.5 crop is 34.5 so is slightly closer to 35mm Equivalent then 24 at 36mm.
Great review in detail !
Question. I have the sigma 30mm and the 56mm I used to shoot with the sigma 16mm as well but it was damaged. I don't want to buy the 16 again but still want something that I fairly wide. Does it make sense to get the 23mm if I have the 30mm for videography
It's a bit different, however It's not nearly as wide as the 16mm. Maybe see if a camera shop can fix the 16mm? or contact sigma, ya never know!
This Viltrox 23mm or the Sony 50mm 1.8 OSS. If you had to choose

On the Nikon cameras I owned you could compensate for back and front focusing in the settings menu according to which lens you had attached
Great review, can you do review on Viltrox 33mm f1.4 and put it against the sony e35mm f1.8...might want to to replace my sel35 for the Viltrox for more bokeh..but would love to see comparison before i jump.
Great idea! It will be a while though before I do that. But it’s on my list!
@@kyletaggart Take your time man, it’s going to be a great comparison. Cheers
This lenses can create a issue of vignetted (corner sides black border) while shooting this on sony zve10 video mode?
I have both of those Sony pancake lenses, one 20mm and one 28mm...
They are not great, but your A6xxx with that lens will fit into your pants pocket!
One is much sharper than the other, but I don't remember which, its a long time ago that I used them.
I have read that this lense is not fully compatible with the a6000. Also i have read that some user have got problems with the auto aperture when switching the mode and the only way to solve it is by detaching the lense.
Have you experienced such issues? 😬
I haven’t had any of that happen to me. Nothin but fun with this lens so far.
hi, thanks for nice review, so this lens better than sigma 30mm?
I'd say they're extremely close in performance. They do have a different look, due to the focal length, vingetting, and bokeh.
@@kyletaggart how about sharpnes?
Thanks for the review! Unique and super informative. I could see this lens on my a6600...
Would be a sick combo!
Hi Kyle
So just to be sure, is it better than the sigma 30mm? With the price around the same
Thanks!
I wouldn’t say better. It’s a different focal length. Both are great lenses.
@@kyletaggart I see, I end up bought the viltrox just now because of the focal length , cross fingers! Thanks for the feedback
Enjoy! I really enjoy the lens.
Great video mine doesnt have gold lettering lol im upset i just got it today i won it through an online auction
How is the continous AF performance of this lens BTW?
Good. I didn’t notice any huge difference between this and sigma/sony at a similar focal length.
@@kyletaggart Thank you. Well, I mean your shoulder framing when you explain in your video.
Gotcha. Yeah I now switched to the Viltrox, mainly just bc I wanted to try a different lens, and it is a slightly more flattering look than a wider lens.
I came, I purchased, I sold on ebay, then I purchased again. A very nice lens.
How about stabilization during video? Better than the Sigma?
Neither of them have stabilization. 👍🏻
Great review.... Reviews.... I just bought sigma 16mm 1.4... Now i am looking for something more like for portraits (sigma does pretty good job... But its not super easy do do good portraits)
So, as a walkaround and portrait lense.... Which focal lenght would you recommend? 30-35mm?
I use sony a6000
The 30mm is gonna be better for portraits, but I kinda like the 24mm better for walk around/everyday stuff. Either way, I don't think you'll be disappointed though!
Would you recommend this lense for night photography without a tripod
Yes! You’ll be able to get some really sharp images and great low light performance especially on a tripod.
@@kyletaggart Thanks man, i will try it again and update the firmware if needed. Thanks for the reply, Cheers
viltrox 33 vs sigma 30 plz
idk which should i pick, this or the sigma :c
Wow. I'm sold 💸🤩 Awesome video!
Hola amigo. Vi tu video y mencionaste el 24 1.8 de Sony, ¿lo tienes? me interesa saber si ¿viltrox 23 1.4 tiene mejor nitidez que el Sony? independiente del precio. Gracias de antemano. Saludos cordiales.
Is it better than the 16-55 mm kit lens?
Much better!
Is it because of the lens hood what caused the vignetting? Planning to buy this lens.
No, it is not. It’s just an affect when down at that aperture.
@@kyletaggart Ohh okay thanks. By the way I really loved your videos man. All the reviews and comparison are awesome! Keep it up.
I'm a photographer. And I work at an automaker making this Jeep Renegede. 15:17
Enjoyed this vid (and it was about time I made a comment in one of your vids!) Fellow A6000 user here too ✌
Thanks Michalis. No pressure to comment, just glad you enjoy the vids!
@@kyletaggart No such pressure, just wanted to express my appreciation
Advice. Just bought this lens. When I put the lens in "A" it stays at f/16 I can't control the aperture on my top dail. Any thoughts?
WIERD!
FYI I' m using a A6000 with updated firmware.
But it works like it should on my A6400
@@kyletaggart last message. Firmware update (1.1.6) fixed it. ALSO after up update I'm able to control aperture via camera no matter what the lens setting is on.
Oh I have a A6100 & 16mm sigma, but this is slightly wider than the 30mm sigma & cheaper price... thx for sharing!!
No prob! 🙌🏻
@@kyletaggart any videos on how to handle color grading on an A6100, since it doesnt include color profiles?
Nope. I only change my white balance to custom for my videos depending on my lighting.
Does NEX-5N (contrast autofocus only) have autofocus problems with this lens?
I haven't heard of issues, and cant speak on that as I don't have an NEX-5N.
I bought this lens and answer to himself. Unfortunately autofocus does not work on nex-5n and probably other old cameras. I am really disappointed😞
Really? Interesting. I know there are firmware updates - I don’t know if the updates include backwards comparability
Мля, вообще нет автофокуса? Только ручной?
@@y200yk да, вообще нет, хотя и пытается сфокусироваться. Кроме того камера не понимает изменение диафрагмы кольцом на объективе. В общем не совместим со старыми тушками.
How is the focus with video?
Great from what I can tell. I shot my last video on this lens. Also there’s a video auto focus test in this one, just near the end.
9:50 wtf! Hen with a beard.?😯😂 Btw nice video 👍
She’s sensitive about that haha
Ordered one for video work
Sigma 30mm f1.4 vs Viltrox 23mm f1.4 sony a6600 in 2024
Which is better ?
I like the Viltrox a little better, just my personal preference. It’s not a night and day sharpness difference.
Hello is your viltrox 23mm is upgraded to the latest firmware?
no, so if you're expecting it to be better, it's better than anything in this vid!
@@kyletaggart i have issue on my viltrox 23mm just bought it yesterday. . The autofocus on video its not that good . . Always focus breathing and then i update the firmware to 1.1.6 the focus breathing is gone now . . Then the auto focus is smooth. . . I thought my lens is broke when i purchase it. . . Btw i purchase this lens bcuz u have a good review on it :)
I freaking LOVE this lens. I’ll have to update it. I think what helps for me - is I’ve kept a decent distance during video. I use it a lot now for my ranking head in videos.
I got Sigma30mm is not problem for me I prefer Sigma better construction is same F 1.4 metal construction I don't see the difference my friend the only don't have sigma hood is not metal is plastic Sigma smooth ring. For me Sigma is lighter lens and wide too, I think is depend use it but I keep Sigma 30mm F1.4
Is the 56mm version offered in sony ss well or exclusive to fuji only?
not on Sony yet! However sigma does have the 56mm f1.4. I will review that lens eventually. I hear it's awesome.
@@kyletaggart the 56 is too expensive for me :(
Sigmas 56 haha I already have the 16mm but I plan to upgrade my body to 6400 soo I'm saving up for it
You should make a new video on this lens
if you only have those two lens if you could only one lens what is that ? and why ? because I have only kit lens and want to travel, want the bokeh, and only want to only one prime lens for my second lens, I used it for family trip
If you had to choose one, this or the Sigma 30mm 1.4?
It's a razor thin margin. I think I prefer the 24mm focal length more. Just my preference. They're both excellent. Also, Viltrox is coming out with a 33mm f1.4 as well!
@@kyletaggart Thanks. Yeah I want a lens to go along with the kit lens to take travelling. Can't make my mind up on focal length though. I guess I need to figure out what I mainly set my kit lens too then go from there.
Great review.
Thanks!
Waiting for this company to delivers to us a 50 mm1.4 ff
I’ve been told it’s soon!
hikyletaggart That’s a really nice rumor , 1.4 right?, not another 1.8?.
1.4. They actually just announced the 23mm and 33mm f1.4 for Canon EM. So I think Sony is very close.
Sony busy making lenses for ff and gm series and other companies busy making lenses for sony aps c lens. How come😒
Not sure specifically, but the one thing that comes to mind is $$$.
Is there any vignetting in vdos ?
Does the a6000 have autofocus problem with this lens?
Not from what I’ve seen.
@@kyletaggart would you rather get this lens or the sigma 16mm 1.4? I plan to use the lens for street photography/travel
Probably this lens. I prefer a little tighter than wide.
Really love the bokeh effect with the F1.4

NO YOU ARE!
Thanku very much
We can fix vignetting in post right ?
Yep! Also there has been an update for the lens, which may also fix it.
The gold engravement looks not very good on it..
They don't have OSS right?
They do not.
does anyone have battery drain issues with this camera like 100% to 80% in the space of 20 minutes whilst taking about 15 photos or is it just me
Doesn’t have the best battery, but that shouldn’t be the case. Some things to help, airplane mode, screen and viewfinder brightness, sleep timer for screen.
Why did you beat your sony a6000 up?
Just living life! I don't baby my gear. I take care of it, but I use it to it's fullest.
Dope!
