Watched this review before i bought my 23mm 1.4. Thanks for this! Btw I think the latest releases the model "23mm" is now printed on the body unlike the old ones.
Hi Dustin, for fuji, do you think this lens has better iq than the xf23mmf2 @ f2? Looking for a light 35mm equivalent lens for the xt5. I wonder if this lens can resolve the 40mb sensor as well as the xf23mmf2. Please advise :)
Aa far as image quality, sharpness, vignette and distortion, how well does it do compared to the Sigma f1.4 trio? Would you rate it as good as those lenses? Or how close do they come?
There's a pretty fair variation in the quality of the Sigma trio, so I would say this lens compares pretty favorably to the 30mm F1.4. Lower distortion for the Viltrox, and I would say sharpness is fairly similar.
Hi Dustin, I was considering to buy this lens for video (I'm using Sony ZV E-10) however that vignetting issue made me doubt. I was planning to buy this lens and a wide angle adapter but instead should I go for Sigma 16mm 1.4? What would be your opinion? Which lens would you prefer for video? By the way I recently discovered your channel, you are doing quality content definitely! Thatnks for this detailed review.
I was bummed to se that my copy of the lens has an almost heart shaped aperture stopped down. Looks almost like the lens is broken. But now I know I was not alone, even if your aperture looks slightly rounder in the “off” state.
Aperture is measured in F1.4, F2, F2.8, etc... This lens will focus with the aperture you have set, so, if you use F2 instead of F1.4, half of the light is reaching the sensor for focus, F2.8 allows in a quarter of the light, etc... You'll get better low light focus if you use F1.4-F2 rather than smaller apertures.
Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that e-mails from RUclips alerting us to new tutorials have not been coming through of late. I am subscribed, and the "bell" is set to all.

I sold my Samyang 24 2.8, that lens is not sharp, I didn't like it. other than being small, This lens is much better in IQ. I event contacted Samyang support and send them image files. they said that's as good as it can get.
Dear DA this 23 mm 1.4 Viltrox , is it full frame or APSC, Can I use it in my A7Rii body for photography and for short videos?. May I get a speedy answer.
It is for APS-C, though you can use it on your a7RII in Crop mode or Super35 for video. You get 18MP of resolution for stills and great quality for vidoes.
@@DustinAbbottTWI if no existing gear, I'd get RP +35RF, but I have Nikon glasses I am biased D750 + a solid prime lens makes a lot of sense to start with. XT3 is a fantastic camera but its image quality is nothing to write home about compared to full frame counterparts either old or new.
There's a lot of choice out there now. I'm personally now fully switched over to mirrorless, as I find the advantages for focus to be incredibly appealing...and it seems like all the development energy is on mirrorless right now, and a lot of fantastic lenses are coming to market.
After watching this and reading other reviews, as it is now, it is NOT ready, those who are after a better lens through better autofocus(more consistency on nailing the focus), and more importantly, it needs to be reset under normal use. Wait for firmware updates to what is now V1.1.1. i am not so concern about bokeh considering the price you pay for it. go to read this review by an owner of this lens; www.dpreview.com/forums/post/64269352
With all due respect, I don't have the time to follow up on all the things that hundreds of people on a weekly basis want me to research. I can only report on what I saw myself, which I've thoroughly documented in this review.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Your 24min video generates few thousand words his review is only a few hundred, I cannot explain to you in tens of words better than he can. Possibly there is a quality issue between both of his and your lenses. I am confident that Viltrox had tested YOUR lens before giving it to you hence your findings. I am not saying you are wrong.
Thank you for Dustin‘s time checking out this lens! Always solid and detailed review.🙌🙌
My pleasure!
I purchased it last week and I'm really liking it. at 1.4, the purple fringing and vignette is a bit strong, but the IQ is great. Great Review
I like this one much better than the 33mm, myself.
Thank you very much for this amazing Video! Which one would you buy, the viltrox 23mm 1.4 or the Samyang 24mm 1.8?

Thank you Dustin! Your reviews are simply the best! I have made purchases from some of them and I am more than happy. Thanks again
I'm very glad to hear that!
No one, no one review lenses like you do DA! Stellar forensic evaluation!!! 👏👏👏👏👏 To me the lens falls short but the price justifies it.
I feel like its pretty decent value for money.

Hi Dustin Abbott
is this a Full Frame Lens?? Thanks
No - it is designed for APS-C only.

Viltrox also has a new 13mm F1.4 that might be enticing for you, and the Sigma is a solid choice as well.
would you recommend this over the sigma 30mm for sony?
Good question. I would say yes mostly because of being lower distortion.
can you try these on full frame body? like zv-e1 or a7siii? cropped or clear zoomed in of course
I don't actually have them on hand to do that.
It seems like Samyang/Rokinon 21mm f1.4 is noticeably better optically?
I don't think I'd say that, no.
Looks like a winner and the price is right
For sure.
I was bummed to se that my copy of the lens has an almost heart shaped aperture stopped down. Looks almost like the lens is broken. But now I know I was not alone, even if your aperture looks slightly rounder in the “off” state.
That is NOT a strength for Viltrox. There's definitely room for improvement there.
Like your way of reviewing 👏👏👏👏
Thank you
Great review....Do you think viltrox 23 has better IQ and color rendering than their 33mm?
I do think so. I liked it much better, myself.
A comparison to the Zeiss 24mm 1.8 would be great. Not that they're in the same price universe, but ever so close in FOV.
I'm trying to think what lens you are referring to, as I can't think of a Zeiss 24mm F1.8
@@DustinAbbottTWI The exact lens would be the Sony Sonnar T* E 24mm f/1.8 ZA.
Is this lens better than the Sony Carl Zeiss 24mm 1.8 in your opinion?
I can't really give an answer as I've never spent any time with the 24mm F1.8
@@DustinAbbottTWI understood, thank you!
Is this lens good for movie shooting ,also in low light
It's pretty good for video. Low light is also good...if you are focusing at wide aperture.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks , what you mean ,with wide aperture? Can i do,this with my Sony A6600?
Thanks

This or the sigma 19mm 2.8? (aside from aperture)
I actually like this lens a lot better. The Sigma 19mm has a very dated autofocus system.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thnx
Like to a comparison with 24mm 1.8 Zeiss for APSC and also with 24mm 1.4GM on APSC.
Hi there - I'm afraid I won't be spending more time with this lens. It isn't a major release and I have to move on to other projects.
Many thanks for this review to you!
Glad it was helpful!
For a similar focal length, this lens or Samyang 24mm f2.8?
This lens obviously has a huge aperture advantage and a nicer build, so I'd probably go with the Viltrox.

Those are some weird aperture blades, they looks like Ridge wallets. 😂Go to 5:50, that was pretty funny.
That section is actually showing you the shape of the aperture in the bokeh highlights as the lens is stopped down.

This 23mm new + mint xt3 or mint rp + rf 35f1.8 or used d750 + tamron 35vc, I know which I'd choose.
