Just wanted to say that my original style shirt is extremely soft and comfortable. (Not and paid endorsement). It has quickly gone to the top of my shirt rotation and I always look forward to the Fab Rats shirt day. Thank you, I was not expecting such a great shirt, just wanted something from one of my favorite channels and ended up getting a favorite shirt. Also, I have never posted a compliment about the quality of a shirt before so this is a first.
I'd really love a gray hat so next time you have a give away please put my name in. I'm disabled ex-military on a fixed income. I have watched all your videos and love what you do. Before my accident I used to do alot of what you do.
I'm a old lady but for some reason I'm enjoying watching your RUclips videos very much... thanks for giving this old lady something go watch other then watching news like my other old people do...
You know it’s a good and challenging video when it starts with Matt on the Fab Rats channel. I honestly looked down to check the channel right when Matt said “why am I introducing the channel” lol
Man Paul so sorry for your loss, I lost my Day and Hero over 6 years ago now and I miss him. There will always be something that will make you think of him and the great memories even more now. There is not a day that goes by that I am not thankful for a great dad. Sounds like you had a great one too. Thanks for being genuine and sharing your dad with us.
I have to say how much i love this channel. I dont own a big shop with fancy tools and to see the way you do these jobs is awesome. NO ONE shows these things. Thank you
Watching Paul Work/Play is often educational, sometimes funny but always entaining. The Fab Rats crew is a great bunch of folks from what I see. I hope to meet them in person someday.
What a channel guys . So educational and entertaining too. Looking forward to seeing PAPA DARS truck all finished. Your son's too! Discovered FAB RATS and Matts OFF ROAD around the same time. Keep up the great work. Thanks to you all.
When Grandpa Sherm has to adjust his hat, you just know they’re struggling. Eventually, Paul makes everything look easy. Date night makes everyone smile!
Long time viewer, First time commenter. I was watching how you heat the bearings to slide them right on and wanted to tell you that most of these bearings are made of 52100 high carbon steel. They are hardened and tempered to a specific rockwell hardness. Heating them to a brown or straw color definately changes the heat treated hardness of the steel making them softer. I don't know if that affects there use or wear at all not my area of expertise. I am a knifemaker and can see by the color whats happening to the steel. You may want to look into it. Having said all that I absolutely love your video's and the work you do. Keep it up and best wishes to you and the family!
@RollinRat If you hit 250 degrees in the rear end...your oil is TOAST and will lead to total failure....200 is a hot rear end, 180 is about normal...oil starts to go above 210
i agree Heating that Bearing like that did not sit well with me. He Might want to Try dry ice on the axle, that might work. or Just Pres them on like i believe is the Recommended / Designed Method. a little dry ice on the axel & they might just tap right on.
When dealing with tempered steel if you change the color of the steel you have changed the hardness of the steel. It is not necessary to use that much heat a little will do it. Or Instead of putting heat on the bearings I chill the shaft causing it to shrink.
I noticed the trailer ball and thought to myself wonder how long its going to be there, next shot it was gone. Like your stuff you show real work what can and does happen. Thanks for keeping it real
I think we've all had days like that when even the simple stuff stops us in our tracks. Thanks for showing us what really goes on instead of some magical perfect RUclips transition.
"I just made it hard"! No truer statement has ever been made. I am delighted to see someone else has the same luck/curse that I have. Now I don't feel like I am alone with this luck/curse. When I worked in the field repairing heavy equipment, many times I had to have more parts brought to me. Sometimes I was 3 hours away from the shop. That is just the nature of repairing in the field. Since you are an hour away from your parts store, you might as well be in the field. LOL If I had to order a special seal to do a job, I would always order an extra one. If it was a special order, I would order 2 extra. I could always return it to the parts department if I did not need it. The old saying, "It is much better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it," is soooooo true.
I want to see you build that box body Bronco you passed. Great job on the Jeep. Always a good day when you get a date night out of it. I loved when our kids were home, but me and momma needed a little us time, so date nights became sacrosanct. If someone wasn't bleeding, then we were to be allowed some time. Enjoyed dad daughter dates and times when me and the boys could spend time together as well, but your partner in life deserves to be reminded how much you love and enjoy them as a person. Awesome
Fab Rats you make it look so easy ! As for MAP gas heating the inner bearing race only drawback is you could temper the race soft if you go past straw color. Hot oil would be my choice here, but I'm not under pressure to get the job out quickly either. Great video thanks for posting !
So sorry for your loss. I feel your pain. Lost my dad and brother same year in 2019. We have good memories. Keep your head up and enjoy" the ole girl". That's what your dad would want. Love you brother.
Paul, I love the fact that you include the problems, as well as the success 👍. I love the fact that Michelle jumps in on the parts run and makes it a date night 😉 Good job upgrading the bleeping Jeep 😏😂 👍👍
Well, you can tell she enjoys being with him, THAT'S what makes a parts run a date night. Doesn't matter if it's a parts run or whatever. I know people in marriage that honestly can't stand each other and others times they are the best but that's few and far between. When you locate the nest of these unicorns please let the rest of us know. 😂
Another one out the door ! We used a deep fryer to heat up bearing and races. before I used a torch and a temp stick. You wouldn't believe the amount of bearing that failed when others had worked on them before. We mainly worked on heavy equipment and tri-axle trucks. Got one of your shirts, love it !!
You gotta love Matt and Paul: "We're assuming...?" "Well, I measured it... by looking at the picture on my phone... that's about right." I love it... 😀 😀
i work in a machine shop running an OD grinder. manufacturing pinions, worm shafts, hallow shafts and good stuff like that. cool to see people building with things like that !!!
Frustration is after 10 1/2 years without a vehicle, I was given a 2002 Kia Sportage from someone at my church. I've had for about a year and after 40 surgeries on my body and taking my time I've done some things to it, but the whole suspension and frame rail is rusted. The frustration part is that when I does the death wobble, because there are 3 loose ball joints on the front left side, I'll have to junk it. Then I'll be back to not having a vehicle. It is a blessing I've had another vehicle to drive, but.... I'm glad your able to do so much to vehicles and have your knowledge. You make it look easy and you all have fun doing it. God Bless
Paul, those TrueTracks are AWESOME... even with one wheel in the air, you just add a little brake, parking brake, or pedal brake... and it starts driving on the traction wheel again. The military uses them... they take a little work to get used to, but they work great! I have one in my rear diff... I'm thinking about putting an OxLocker in the front...
Years ago, while rotating tires on my 86 Toyota 4x4, I noticed rear axle bearings were bad @180k . Was in a very small town. Went to the little local bearing shop and asked, can you match this up ? Chevy 3/4 ton HD. Got em in stock ! Yeah..older Toyotas have a tough drive train !
I'm on my 4th Jeep right now. My 1995 YJ is pretty awesome. Old school all the way. However....I do also really enjoy my 2015 4Runner quite a bit too. Kinda the best of both worlds IMO.
Been working on cars for a long time. I always buy an extra seal or two, almost always need them. Sometimes the longest part of the job seemed to be going to the parts store. Love watching someone else i.e., Paul do the work now.
Of course Paul got the rear end fixed. It's what he does best! It's always good to see (and hear) Michelle in there also. She is always a really good sport!
Another epic Winder Towing beard. Gotta be something in the water down there. Oh, and the mechanical stuff was pretty ok too. Paul is a bottomless well of knowledge.
I just saved the website for Papa Dar’s campground on my phone. We’ve been talking about a camping trip to Utah, and after watching Fab Rats for the past 15 months of so, staying here would be great!
Oh my gosh that was the best ever. Loved seeing the Yota perform. Papa Dar is no slouch either. And Michelle....what can I say? Love you all. I have the Fab Rats infection now.
My dog loves nothing more than going for rides in my Jeep. It also has a simple after market exhuast....which sounds VERY similar to this one. So similar that when you started it up my dog heard it from the other room and lost his mind thinking I was going somewhere without him.
Skills like that at work..................very relaxing to watch... ...gives you confidence in the world continuing to operate properly. Just keep him away from go-carts. ;)
Lubrication, lubrication, lubrication....its always been a big help for me when I lubricate the mating surfaces so the components can mesh together with less binding, vs trying to beat everything together with the big hammer, plus easier to take back apart if need be. if it don't fit beat the hell out of it! OBTW: Original trade and training, more automotive repair experience than other trades
Why YES, YES they are, I mean look at the plus side, you are always learning how to work on every other jeep on the road, helping fellow jeepers, by alway working on yours.
It's awesome to see the best of the RUclips together great tv for family and jeepers and all the KS for the sanity u guys bring in a crazy world we live in!!
Paul, I have tell ya, it’s pleasing just to watch you operate. You’ve obviously done a lot of the work you show on your channel, but you dumb it down for us simpletons. Amazing work, you make it look easy, but it can’t be, because of all the thousands of inch that has to be taken into consideration, things don’t always just “fall into place”, as you so eloquently say… it takes expertise. My friend your rebuild of Matt’s Morrvair transmission was a thing of beauty. Keep up the great work. You’re obviously very talented, to do the work you do, and have it come out “perfect”. Which it must be if it’s gonna hold up… I’ll keep watching…amazing stuff…okay, so I wondered if things go awry on occasion and turns out they do, so guess what … you’re human. Can I add one more aspect to your channel, and may I give Matt’s channel the same compliment… no language. Off color I mean. I shared your channel with my grandson, whose getting into welding, metal shop and cars… he’s doesn’t need to hear a bunch of swear words, and he can see how the professionals operate and hopefully get him on the right track… by the way.. nothing wrong with you showing how a mistake is made, with the beating I mean, we can learn too. Love your channel..Kevin
Being somewhat mechanically inclined, I am always amazed by guys like Paul that just seem to know what needs to be done and how to do it. I’m sure he grew up learning this stuff and I think it’s great the boys are learning from dad and doing things, too. Plus, I can’t leave out Michelle! What a great wife that encourages Paul to do what he likes and being such an asset in the videos.
I wish I had your knowledge and skills! Amazing work, always keeps me intensively focused trying to work it out, a few more fab rat tuitions and I'll be there 😂🇮🇪
Been heating bearings for years with a rose bud. Today was pinion bearings (cones) as Cat calls them for a 966G loader. Usually when they start to smoke good is a good indicator also that they are ready. Great job on the build.
AS an individual who owns this Jeep and di the exact same thing to mine. I would recommend the RCV front axles for the Jeep. Really makes a difference in turning radius and never worry have to worry about the axles they are so strong.
- There..axels done. Now all we gotta do is INSTALL IT and we're finished. - Did this n that and done.. Now all we gotta do is the OTHER SIDE and we're finished. - Jeeps done..all we gotta do is ALL the details and we'll be finished. I enjoy the videos guys lots of good stuff thanks for posting.
That is the part that most people just do not get when it comes to working on stuff and charging them fairly --> who is responsible for the man hours when stuff goes wrong, the rusty old bolts that break off, the seals that are bad or worse the good ones you wreck (Opps). Good work Paul.
I like that you get your son out there and involved. There are a lot of things a guy can do in life but learning to work on cars and trucks- IN MY OPINION- builds confidence that when things come up you can fix it. You don't HAVE to call someone and pay a fortune!
Those pinions are always hard going on. I welded a piece of pipe to an air hammer shank that fits the inside diameter of the yoke and use the air hammer to drive it on. Works great.
Paul, i've watched you put together several differentials and i just didn't understand the pattern on the ring gear and how the shims set the backlash until today. I totally get it now. I know this is a two year old video so im sure you won't see this comment but i wanted to say thanks. i feel better. lol
You know that every damn brand has some stupid ass thing people call them, Ford, found on road dead lol only thing bad about Chrysler BEFORE was the trannys, and now though they have the number 1 tranny in the biz
Ha... been there done that on wrecking seals, etc. I taught myself to buy 3 or 4 when I only need 2, then return what I didn't use on my next trip. I do wish I could set up a rear gear as easy as you.
"Are all Jeeps this cursed"! By my experience, owning a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 diesel, Yes. It is a love hate relationship with this type of vehicle. Seems I am repairing something ever 2nd week related to the SUV. But just love this thing regarding the diesel, it will pull almost anything and go where I want it to go and back again when running. All the best and good videos. From Winnipeg, Mb., Canada.
I was thinking the same, but then I realize he does probably hundreds of these a year and drives them hard himself on his trucks so it's probably no biggy.
@@angrydingus5256 Would it still work? Hell yes, the bearing is way over sized , under loaded and runs at extremely low speed in an oil bath. Yea, it will outlast several sets of tyres the seal and probably the axle it’s sitting on. Is it damaged? Quite possibly, at that temperature the surface hardening may have lost a significant percentage of its effectiveness.
@@brucebaxter6923 Fair enough. And Im actually glad someone brought the subject up. I even looked up if this was "okay" to do before finding this comment and read that you shouldn't heat a bearing much past 150F and that 250F could make it brittle, I suppose depending on application it's used for though. Thanks for the insight.
Ok at the start I was wondering how long it would take you to hit your head on that ball mount lol. Then at 6:11 It's gone so I have to ask this question,,,, in that 6 minutes how many times did you hit your head before you removed it ? Lol
@@stephenabril7084 Your statement insinuated that Matt must pay his office manager very well to be able to afford an expensive Jeep. Statistically it's more likely that the person is just going further into debt.
Yeah I thought those axles looked pretty spindly.. Of course, I'm used to Toyota & Chevy. My old '67 Land Rover Series 2A 109wb was a beast. One ton. 12 leafs at every wheel. Wasn't the most reliable, but cheap n easy to fix.
I agree with you on the bleepin Jeep! I had a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it had leaking rear axle seals so I decided let's get some new bearings and seals and replace said leaking seals well that went well because about 2 months later they're leaking again so by the third time I decided to pull the axles take it into the machine shop have them replace the parts maybe I was doing it wrong carefully put them back on two weeks later leaking again I gave up couple months later the repo Man showed up his problem now!!

Paul sure got his full 25 cent share of “help me with one bolt real quick” out of Sherm 😂
Love them fab rats stickers
This is my first time watching this video. I really enjoyed seeing your dad. I wish that he was still with you.
Run some Anti-seize on the threads of the bearing puller to make it last a lot longer.
AS an individual who owns this Jeep and di the exact same thing to mine. I would recommend the RCV front axles for the Jeep. Really makes a difference in turning radius and never worry have to worry about the axles they are so strong.
so its the first day of my 4 day 4WD weekend and Im all packed up ready to go...and Im sitting here watchin Fab Rats! :)
So basically, downhill from here?
@@dwitcraft HaHa, it sorta was!
Nice work on your part..it’s a shame about newer Jeep’s and Matt..they have both lost their way.
👍👍❤️
Even if he loses his way occasionally......we’ll still claim him.😉
That is the part that most people just do not get when it comes to working on stuff and charging them fairly --> who is responsible for the man hours when stuff goes wrong, the rusty old bolts that break off, the seals that are bad or worse the good ones you wreck (Opps). Good work Paul.
Good job Michelle, sabotaging the hubby's work, in order to get a sushi dinner. That's big brain thinking right there.
I like that you get your son out there and involved. There are a lot of things a guy can do in life but learning to work on cars and trucks- IN MY OPINION- builds confidence that when things come up you can fix it. You don't HAVE to call someone and pay a fortune!
That’s so awesome you get to grab a quick outing with your wife! I like that you showed us your successful sushi run as well as the Jeep gears!
Those pinions are always hard going on. I welded a piece of pipe to an air hammer shank that fits the inside diameter of the yoke and use the air hammer to drive it on. Works great.
Motorcycle riding buddy of mine switched to four wheeling ,he says the same thing you do Toyota.👍
Paul, i've watched you put together several differentials and i just didn't understand the pattern on the ring gear and how the shims set the backlash until today. I totally get it now. I know this is a two year old video so im sure you won't see this comment but i wanted to say thanks. i feel better. lol
JEEP - Just Empty Every Pocket
I'm not sure but this cancels the warranty correct. Is it still under warranty
@@archieletsyouknow5508 you better hope not!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
You know that every damn brand has some stupid ass thing people call them, Ford, found on road dead lol only thing bad about Chrysler BEFORE was the trannys, and now though they have the number 1 tranny in the biz
Ha... been there done that on wrecking seals, etc. I taught myself to buy 3 or 4 when I only need 2, then return what I didn't use on my next trip. I do wish I could set up a rear gear as easy as you.
Might have been cursed but you got it done with some big hammers! Good job!
My friends say "It's a Jeep Thing!", but you don't make me regret skipping that "Thing" at all, at all. You are good even when things are going badly.
had two of these before going back to Toyota. I will NEVER stray again.
Hater!
Yep, needing to own 2 of them says it all lmao.
I’ve owned two different Jeep’s and will buy another. The only thing is I won’t buy one newer than 2001. The 4.0 is awesome.
Yotamafia
I had 2 Toyota that failed on me never again
I got my fill of jeeps maybe 30 years ago.. but its fun to watch you guys work..
I used to think an lsd in back was good enough, till I switched it for a locker 😄
Matt said the gears were like 2:91 but when Paul read the numbers on on the rear end they were 41 and 11.That means they were actually 3:73 gears.😂😂😂
Right you are.
I love Paul's reaction to a manufacturers' "Trail Rated" badge! lol
Good work!
What's happening with the early Bronco in the background?
He's going to give it to me... Just never met me. LOL It would be cool to see it worked on.
Great sticker on the back window of the jeep👍🏻
Got brakes that a bonus 😬
Great episode!! Paul is right, when I was growing up "Chevotas" or toyotas with chevy parts were the thing.
I'm near Pueblo, CO and for sure would hire you to do the same with my 2012 wrangler.... Great job brother.. Keep on wheeling
Those date nights are what makes the world work! Great job.
Colour change is getting awfully close to heat treatment temps.
I agree. The brown, straw color I saw shows it's definately changing the hardness of the 52100 steel.
I was thinking the same, but then I realize he does probably hundreds of these a year and drives them hard himself on his trucks so it's probably no biggy.
@@angrydingus5256
Would it still work?
@@angrydingus5256 you got to get metal a lot hotter than 150 degrees before you change its hardness. I’ve been working with metals for over 55 yrs.
I always cut a step in the bearing retainer on the 44 axles so you can get a pull on and press the ring off. Works great.
Ok at the start I was wondering how long it would take you to hit your head on that ball mount lol. Then at 6:11 It's gone so I have to ask this question,,,, in that 6 minutes how many times did you hit your head before you removed it ? Lol
NO REPLY LOL !!!
This is a good video. If I didn't live over here in Georgia I would get Paul to work on my vehicles all of the time.
Got 37s on the wifes jeep and have to do the same. It's manual trans so it never sees 4,5 or 6th gear
Your dad is one awesome big guy love you guy's keep videos coming
Matt pays his office manager very well
Debt based society.
@@JimYeats ???
@@stephenabril7084 Your statement insinuated that Matt must pay his office manager very well to be able to afford an expensive Jeep. Statistically it's more likely that the person is just going further into debt.
@@JimYeats maybe, maybe not. It was a compliment to Matt and I don’t know how he paid for it and It’s not my Business.
A lot ??? No but a good wage . Happy for the guy
This was a great video.....good mix of stuff. Beautiful weather that day too
Perfect time to add chromoly axles and HD diff covers
Yeah I thought those axles looked pretty spindly.. Of course, I'm used to Toyota & Chevy.
My old '67 Land Rover Series 2A 109wb was a beast. One ton. 12 leafs at every wheel. Wasn't the most reliable, but cheap n easy to fix.
Thanks! My brother wants to do exactly this to his JL. Now he has a how-to video;) Got the new shirts, they look great!
It's always a good thing to take mama to dinner
I agree with you on the bleepin Jeep! I had a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it had leaking rear axle seals so I decided let's get some new bearings and seals and replace said leaking seals well that went well because about 2 months later they're leaking again so by the third time I decided to pull the axles take it into the machine shop have them replace the parts maybe I was doing it wrong carefully put them back on two weeks later leaking again I gave up couple months later the repo Man showed up his problem now!!
