If you're interested in Rommel, I recommend his memoir/tactical manual about his experiences in the First World War. It combines tactics, like the best ways to set up machine guns etc., but it's also narratively driven. It is a very human picture of the war, and there are moments of comedy, horror, and sadness. He managed to bluff an Italian column into laying down their arms by telling them Italy had surrendered, then he tried it again on another and they just ignored him and pushed him of the road. There's another battle where many of his men died frozen in a blizzard on a mountain, contesting a position no enemy ever came for. And plenty of bloody battles. Really good read.

Do you have any moral quams with collecting genuine military medals? I used to collect them as a kid but as I've got older I've started to question the efficacy of it.
Holy mother of fed posting Jokes aside, 8:34 I think you are falling a little for the clean Wehrmacht myth here. Rommel while not a member of the NSDAP admired Hitler greatly and earnestly respected his authority and leadership. While he was 'honourable' to aristocratic British POWs he aided the einsatzgruppen in Tunisia in creating concentration camps and using forced labour to complete various projects. He also allegedly asked his troops to approach French positions under the pretense of surrendering only to start attacking at the last moment once they were close. While again he treated British POWs favorably that was not reserved for the Italians later in the war who he told his troops were not to be treated as official POWs due to their perceived betrayal to the Reich. As consequence, various brutalities and warcrimes were directly committed and encouraged under this policy. Furthermore he wasn't quite the general people especially post-war Brits like to think he was. He had a poor strategic understanding of the war and wasted materials trying to fight the war in the mechanized manner he dreamed. While leaving Normandy on June 5th 1944 wasn't a major reflection on his character as he didn't know of the invasion, once he learned of it, instead of immediately returning he went to Hitler, presumptively to get good boy points from the man he loved so much. He generally in many ways wasted resources in North Africa going on impossible offensives, for the sake of winning battles instead of saving resources that were desperately needed elsewhere. While he won battles, they were always pyrrhic victories as they would never be able to lead to real strategic importance. If he understood the war situation of Germany he would have sat tight and not wasted men and material that could have been much better spent in battles on the eastern front. Every tank, man and litre of gasoline he used, was one that could've been used to push critical German offensives into Moscow, Leningrad, and most importantly the Caucuses (where there was realistically attainable oil). While undisputedly he was a talented tactician he was far from the ubergeneral that war era German propaganda and later British postwar analysis displayed him as. His involvement in the July 20th plot was negligible and he was really only killed out of Hitler's paranoia, not for any real anti-nazi sentiment as he generally appreciated Nazi and especially Hitlers rule. Nice uniforms btw.
I absolutely do not agree with the clean Wehrmacht myth nor did I mean to insinuate that he was a good guy. I said that he has a clean “track record” to history buffs which is why he’s so controversial. (and why he’s my favorite to learn about, note me stating that i do not consider him the *best* general) I specifically said it was not clean somewhere in that segment Admittedly I did dumb it down to the very bones and failed to mention DAK war crimes but like I said it was not me praising him it was me commentating on the usual perspective people have on him, while covering his very basic facts. I did not wanna add an extra 10 minutes to the video lol, already raised enough concerns bringing him up in the first place. Maybe it was a mistake
I don’t necessarily believe in the clean Wehrmacht, but I do believe there was a significant potion of the population who were not nazis or against/indifferent to nazis and served purely out of love for Germany and or were forced to. For the officers I’d say there was a decent amount of officers and probably even more lower rank officers who felt the nazis bringing back a lot of Prussian values resonated with them. I personally think Rommel liked hitler less so for Nazism and rather the revitalization of Prussian values and the things that made German officers German officers (albeit a very mutated version of Prussian values) this is purely my conjecture and we may never really know why Rommel liked hitler so much (could have been political, personal reasons or hell he could have been friends purely for survivals sake) in the end there’s a lot of unknowns surrounding which German officers believed in what and how many were truly Nazis and believers (undoubtedly a large portion were believers, maybe even majority) with the burning of records, the Soviet and allied coverups and all sorts of bs going on post war there are obvious and very big holes and our understanding of German life when it comes to motivations and such
@@offizieramira I'm sorry I think misunderstood you're original point at first. I think I can agree that he certainly is not like the other German generals and has a relatively 'cleaner' track record than other member of the Wehrmacht and SS especially when it came to treatment of allied prisoners. I may have been reaching a bit to say you believed in the clean Wehrmacht myth and I was wrong saying that. That being said I still don't think he was a saint at least in relation to especially allied generals.

(and why he’s my favorite to learn about, note me stating that i do not consider him the *best* general) I specifically said it was not clean somewhere in that segment
Admittedly I did dumb it down to the very bones and failed to mention DAK war crimes but like I said it was not me praising him it was me commentating on the usual perspective people have on him, while covering his very basic facts.
You’re doing great. Your content made me feel fascinated about Cold War era military stuff.

Years ago I stumbled on a store selling war antiques and being fascinated as a kid by ww2 I bought a German Iron Cross. I would love to have found out about the guy who initially received it but that will remain a mystery forever I guess. Anyway, I just subscribed to your channel. This was a great video.
