    Fun fact, Grant wasn’t as much of an alcoholic as history makes him out to be. He struggled with it in his early years in the army when he was stationed on the northwest coast, but after that he was rarely drunk. His biggest addiction was actually cigars, which he smoked 3-5 a day, and that is what eventually killed him.

    • @rimfire8217
      @rimfire8217 3 года назад +242

      So he was kinda an alcoholic in his youth but eventually gave it up.

    • @evictionnotice1313
      @evictionnotice1313 3 года назад +347

      Basically. He was depressed and away from his family for a while which lead to him getting HELLA drunk for a WHILE, but through the rest of his life he rarely drank (though the extremely rare times he did drink, he went super overboard and would have 1-3 day binges until he got himself under control), but most of the times we hear of him drunk are lies from officers who didn’t like him, like his CO in St. Louis who was terrible at his job and Grant called him on it creating an enemy for life. But the Grant we always hear about constantly drinking is mostly just attacks on his character from military (on his side) and political rivals.

    Grace Bedell wrote to Lincoln when she was 11. The whole letter is very adorable, but she 100% told Lincoln to grow a beard to improve his appearance.
    "I have yet got four brothers and part of them will vote for you any way and if you let your whiskers grow I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you you would look a great deal better for your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers and they would tease their husbands to vote for you and then you would be President."

    Thanks for covering Lincoln's lesser known negative traits. He was quite 'melancholic', a term used back then to describe what we would call depression now.
    When Lincoln and Mary Todd's engagement was "apparently" called off, several close associates of Lincoln feared his suicide.
    The loss of his children left mental scars along with the huge emotional burden of not only limiting the amount of American deaths but having the fate of every slave in America in his hands. It's remarkable that Lincoln was able to make it through all of that. I remember reading a book where a character gave a fake quote "I do not know if great times make great men but they can most certainly break them."

    • @CNep99
      @CNep99 3 года назад +419

      He was also a big jokester and also just kinda silly, and that probably helped a great deal in the last incredibly streessful years of his life. One of my favorite stories is about an officer running into Lincoln in the War Department and then begged him a thousand pardons. Abe told him one was enough and wished that his generals would change like that.
      But one of my favorite tender stories about him during the war was when he was visiting an army camp where he came across three kittens who he asked where their mother was and learned she had died. He then told the kittens he was happy that they weren't able to comprehend how terrible the Civil War was. It's then said he ordered that they were fed and taken care of and then he sat and pet them and listened to them purring 😭

Many in the South didn't not even own a slave and didn't belief in it. They did not want the union to separate because the country needed the economy from the south. The south simply did not want to be told what they would and wouldn't do and felt they were being invaded.

He encourages homophobic attacks, tacitly supports alt-right groups and explicitly supports two separate dictatorships with appealing human rights records. Slavery was an abomination and Trump is leagues worse because he has become so normalised that we are no longer outraged at his policies-at least during the slave trade people knew what was happening was horrific and evil.

    Yeah, some important details on the Caning of Sumner, for those who don't know:
    1. Preston Brooks didn't attack Sumner immediately. He instead waited until later, when Sumner was alone, sitting down, and attacked him by surprise.
    2. When asked why he attacked Sumner in such a blatantly dishonorable way, Brooks said that, because Sumner was noticeably taller than him, he was worried Sumner would overpower him in a fair fight. This was in spite of the fact that Preston was a veteran of the Mexican-American War, while Sumner had never been in the military.
    3. Brooks was also scared of other people intervening, so he had two of his allies literally stand by and threaten everyone nearby with loaded revolvers to prevent them from saving Sumner from this surprise attack.
    4. After the attack, the people of the South were so supportive of this cowardly assault that they sent Brooks new canes to replace the one he broke while beating Sumner.
    5. In spite of Brooks' attack nearly killing him, Sumner survived, regained most of his former strength, and continued on to lead a wing of radical Republicans during the Civil War.
    In conclusion, Preston Brooks and his friends were chickenshit cowards who were too scared of Sumner to fight him fairly, just because he was kinda tall. And not only were they not ostracized for being such pathetic losers, but their constituents lauded them for behaving in such a craven manner. Fuck those guys.

    Interesting Fact: Some time between late 1864 and early 1865, Abraham Lincoln’s eldest son, Robert, was saved from being hit by a train at a New Jersey platform when a man pulled him off the tracks. That man was Edwin Booth, the brother of John Wilkes Booth. Edwin Booth was considered one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of the 19th century and was, of course, quite well known at the time. Robert later wrote an account of the incident in a 1909 letter and sent it to the editor of a paper called The Century Magazine, but it is believed he never told his parents because they already had enough to worry about besides him almost getting hit by a train.
    Robert was visiting his friend John Hay at the White House the night his father was killed, he rushed to be by his side until he passed away. His close friend in later years said he never forgave himself for not attending the play with his father, for he would have been assigned to sit at the back of the box due to his role in the presidential cabinet. He believed if he had gone, John Wilkes Booth would have had to deal with him before being able to get to his father.
    As for Edwin Booth, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln almost destroyed him. Edwin was a unionist and a loyal supporter of Lincoln, his brother a successionist believing Lincoln would become King of America. In one night, Edwin lost his brother, his president he deeply believed in, and the prestige of their family name as actors. According to a friend of Edwin’s, it was only the love of his friends that saved him from madness. They took turns staying with him, afraid if he didn’t end up going mad, that he would begin drinking again which he had quit 2 years earlier.
    There were only two things that kept him going: writing his autobiography…and the knowledge that he had saved his slain presidents son from possible death on that train platform.

      Another interesting fact: in 1881, Secretary of War Robert Lincoln was waiting on a train with President Garfield when a lunatic by the name of Charles Guiteau assassinated the president in front of him. Twenty years later, after receiving an invitation from President McKinley, Robert attended the Pan-American exposition in Buffalo and Robert was standing outside an exhibition hall called the Temple of Music the very moment that anachist Leon Czolgosz shot McKinley. After that, Robert refused all presidential invitations and endeavored to never be in the same room with a president again stating "there is a certain fatality about presidential functions when I am present."

    Fun Fact about the first battle of Bull Run: There was quite a lot of confusion between the two sides during the battle. Many Confederate officers wore their old U.S. Army uniforms, many SOLDIERS wore blue uniforms or old US Army uniforms like the Union soldiers, and the US Stars and Stripes and the Confederate Stars and Bars looked almost identical, creating confusion when looking for enemy flags.

      Ngl, one of my favorite flag designs is Lee's Confederate battle flag, definitely not the Stars and Bars design. No idea what it's called, most just call it "The Confederate Flag" nowadays, since there's a popular misconception that it was the official CSA flag. That likely stems from it being the flag painted on the roof of a certain orange Dodge Charger nicknamed The General Lee that was pretty much a main character in the popular 80s TV show called The Dukes of Hazard.
      Anyways, from a purely design standpoint, I think it's the best looking of any flag design, with my 2nd constantly flipping between The Union Jack and The Bandera de Mexico, depending on the mood in.

      Only McClellan and Hooker sucked in the East. The Union Forces were highly successful West of the Appalachians. Even the two Offensive operations by Lee ended up with his army being slaughtered.

    • @voteZDLR
      @voteZDLR 4 года назад +2

      @@larrycable1948 That was one of the biggest mistakes Lee made. Granted. But yeah they had tried several generals and ultimately they were like "You know what forget this, just start burning their farms down one by one. Kill their animals. Destroy their crops. Take their homes." Then one by one the soldiers from the South started hearing reports about what was happening to their properties, their families, their livelihoods and homes. This disheartened the Confederate soldiers immensely. Sherman's March to the Sea IMO is what expedited the end of the war.

    • @larrycable1948
      @larrycable1948 4 года назад +2

      @@voteZDLR Certainly Sherman's March to the Sea was a factor in ending the War, but remember that he had fought his way back North and was in Raleigh NC when the war ended. While the March to the Sea was certainly destructive to an Materials of War, they did not burn farms of those that didn't actively resist. The Historians after the Civil War, who tended to be from the South, demonized the fact that the Sherman's Army foraged for supplies, even though their Army's did the exact same thing when the crossed into enemy territory, which means Lee and Bragg practiced it too. A lot of Lee's success was from fighting Defensive battles on his home turf where he was well supplied, chose the ground to fight on, and had good interior lines. It helped that he was faced by a Commander that was indecisive, and IMO, didn't understand the implications of modern technology on the war. Neither did Lee or most of the Commanders. Real Rifles, later on breech loading rifles and artillery, multi shoot firearms that included the first real automatic weapons made the tactics learned from the previous wars obsolete. The only ones that truly seemed to grasp the need for a change in tactics was Sherman and Sheridan, to a less degree Grant.

    • @voteZDLR
      @voteZDLR 4 года назад

      @@larrycable1948 What do you think Lee's biggest mistake then was? I think it was pushing into the Northern territories hoping to capture Washington DC and get terms for the North's surrender. He could've just kept doing what was working for him, which as you say was primarily a defensive effort.
      Also, how long do you think the Confederacy would've lasted before re-writing it's own Constitution OR more likely rejoining the US IF they did win?

    • @larrycable1948
      @larrycable1948 4 года назад +1

      @@voteZDLR I don't think Lee grasped the strategic idea that you didn't need to win all the battles to win the war. As an example, even though he was somewhat blinded by the prolonged absence of Stuart's cavalry, he could have disengaged and moved to a position favorable to his tactics and Meade would have been forced to follow. This was suggested by Longstreet as an alternative to the brutal and suicidal frontal attacks first on the Union Right ending up at Little Round Top and later at Pickett's Charge. The real master of this was Sherman. If you look at this Atlanta Campaign, it was a series of flanking maneuver's that force the Confederates to follow instead of attacking them in fixed position.

    I would argue that Winfield Scott gave a brilliant plan but it was Lincoln's impatience that led him to direct confrontation with the Confederate army. In the end, Scott's plan proved effective in defeating the South.
