Cut Content in New Super Mario Bros. U !

- There are tons of unused objects and items hidden in the code of New Super Mario Bros U. Some of them are just small neat little things that didn’t make the cut into the full version of New Super Mario Bros. U, while others are actually pretty cool obstacles that at some point in development probably had a full level build around them but then got kicked out for some reason. In this video we are going to take a look at a lot of those cut New Super Mario Bros U. features, and we will speculate a bit about what their purpose was, and why they were cut.

Absolutely hated those moving ice blocks in Mario Wii.
Until you turn on the red blocks B)
Heh, same here! They do help a ton, though.
I agree
What I hated most about them wasn’t so much that they moved, it was that they smashed you against walls; and boy, did they love to smash 6.6
Even though i haven't played that game in a while, it's so relatable.
Oh thanks so much for the shoutout and links Ceave! :D So glad I could help, and your video was very cool as always!
The glowing pipe thingie actually spawns when you collect a certain amount of coins, but it's hard to set up properly, lol. Oh, I saw AboodXD (maker of the Miyamoto program) replied here in these comments as well :D (Psycrow)
@@creeperfire625 Ceave pinned AboodXD's instead (which was fitting, Abood made the Miyamoto editor) and this one is probably still lost at the bottom. 10:14 They show up in the jungle airship level
Being able to mix different tilesets and backgrounds together that don’t match in themes would be great in SMM2. It would make levels look more interesting.
But I’m kinda glad they didn’t add it because little Timmy would just make ice ground with forest background and lava lol
wait but jungle + castle though
that would be amazing
The two plattforms connected with a rope were in world 4-1 or 4-2 i'm not sure.

So yeah
2:25 Yes, NSMBU uses the same engine as NSMBWii - which is also the same engine used in SM64DS, NSMB, Galaxy, Galaxy 2, 3D Land, 3D World, Mario Maker and Odyssey! They all use the same old engine from 2004. There's even a bug in Odyssey that can be re-created in 64DS with a bit of hex editing.

Those pickupable blocks as well

Many of the unused sprites in NSMBU fall into one of three categories:
A. They were ported from NSMBWii, but they weren't used (Ex: particle effects, the moving brown blocks from NSMBWii's Towers)
B. They were ported from NSMBWii, and they were used, but some settings within their memory that changed them (nybbles) were also ported and left unused (Ex: moving cannons, frozen munchers, icey snake blocks)
C. They were ported from NSMBWii, but their 3D models were not, so the game will crash upon a load attempt (Ex: giant koopa shells, rolling hills with pipes inside, rotating mushroom blocks, one-block-large glow blocks, propeller blocks)
It's actually possible to bring back some of those deadly objects if you can successfully transfer the 3D models from the Wii game to this one. There are many things left to discover by altering the memory of some of the sprites that you add. Miyamoto actually does a decent job at labeling these.
Here's a good page with some information about unused objects: tcrf.net/New_Super_Mario_Bros._U/Unused_Objects
It was only this video that finally made me realize that you drew Psycrow as a roughed up crow and not some Grim Reaper incarnation.

4:33 those were also used a lot in mario bros wii world 3 but i dont think there were ones with coins in them
6:35 that fog was used in mario bros wii ghost houses
8:52 that particle was used in mario bros wii castle levels
8:56 im guessing there are two a seperate wind effects. One that effects mario and enemies, and another that effects checkpoints and ladders
10:04 those enemies are called mecha cheeps. They were in mario bros u, but they did not jump out of the water like that. They appear in a level called the mighty cannonship, and they also appear in mario kart 8. Fun fact, their body is intended to look like a pokeball

That Lakitu test area somewhat reminds me of a Lakithunder boss fight. I wonder if the DS bosses would have originally returned in place of the Boom Booms, but were scrapped early into development.

@Ceave Gaming: When are you going to make a behind-the-scenes video and take us along for the ride through the process of making one of these?
The tree in the cave at the beginning is the same as in the snow-theme of Mario Maker 2
Actually, the pipe was used in coin battle mode!
Unused stuff in games is always interesting. But I like the way this video is put together.
I'm actually glad you noticed most of these were in the Wii Version. Moving Bullet Bill Launcher, rock throwing Crabs etc
The golden pipe is in the coin battle and the bonzai bill blaster with the luigi head is in NSLU
you missed a few of the mechanics being leftovers from the wii version, the bullet blasters that go up and down, the moving ice platform, pick-up-able ice blocks, the water floating question blocks, and probably more that i missed as well.
The bull eyes Blaster too
the jungle level at 5:22 looks like it’s supposed to be a ‘follow the koopa shell’ level (like the one we get at the end of the base game in world 9) by the looks of it, which would explain all the small spaces big mario can’t get to easily.
Part of the reason why Mario U is made off Mario Wii is because Mario U was originally Mario Wii but in HD with Mii's as playable characters.Mario Mii was Mario U's original name
I think the word you were looking for is "up-pickable".
Will you do different sheningens with Miyamoto, Reggie, NSMBe, Coin killer (all NSMB editors) like with Mario maker? 🤔
I doubt Miyamoto will be in the video
I'm pretty sure all of them allow for scripting (and perhaps even with some toying around, custom object imports), so there's no real need to do crazy contraptions.

That Miyamoto editor looks really cool. I hope to toy around with it at some point. I also love the Mushroom Kingdom background at 8:23. By the way, someone should patch up the game so things like the big shells don't crash the game.
I like that theme in the start...
That on the ground rotating Block comes from Super Mario 3D World.
The golden Pipe is in the coin battle mode.
The rotating blocks come from NSMBW. The rotating blocks ('Grumbleblumps') in 3D World are a bit different.
The background at the beginning is very cool, I wish they would have used it other than in the world 5 boss stage
The wind thing is a leftover from Nsmb Wii. It was used in a desert level that I remember being a nightmare to get through.
