Great reaction as always Rebecca! The music mastermind here is the singer Jari. He writes the music. In their first album, Jari played all the instruments except drums, so it was a two man band. Later came the other players, and now they even have another guitarist so Jari has been able to focus on only singing. He is mostly self-taught on singing and instruments. The drummer Kai Hahto plays currently in Nightwish, so Wintersun has another drummer, but since Kai is one of the most talented drummers ever, he will probably still play when they record albums.

Love it, love it, love it! Don't be afraid, many of us finns can be a bit scary looking metal dudes at first glance, but we have hearts of gold and only the best wishes for you :)
I'm happy you took the brave plunge in to wintersun world. Please try "loneliness - winter" by them. The album version. It is a wonderful melancholic song and with much more gentle singing.

Great reaction, you should listen to their song Loneliness (Winter), it's their ballad and Jari's voice is outstanding. Has a hint of Matt Bellamy to it. Also what always impresses me about these bands is that they sing in their second (or third) language)

If I had to choose my top 3 favourite Finnish bands, these would be Nightwish, Insomnium and Wintersun. Speaking of Wintersun, when I first listened to them a couple of years ago (they'd just released their third album, "The Forest Seasons") I immediately fell in love with their music. Jari Mäenpää is truly a music genius. It's a pity he can't publish albums more often due to the lack of his own funds ("The Forest Seasons" came out thanks to a crowdfunding project)... But I'll keep on supporting them as one of the most talented European bands of all times.
If you're interested in digging deeper into their music, check their first album, "Wintersun". The sixth song in the album, "Starchild", is considered one of the best songs Jari has produced (and it may be my third favourite song of the band after "Awaken From The Dark Slumber (Spring)" and "Sons Of Winter And Stars"). Lots of love from Spain!^^

What a *GREAT* way to start my morning...you, and Wintersun \m/. Jari is to Wintersun what Tuomas is to Nightwish...the genius behind the music. And what music it is. The scary part of Wintersun is that just about everything is this epic, no lie. Hopefully you'll do some more down the road. Time from the same Sonic Pump video would be great. Slan :)

Wintersun is one of my favorite bands and you're my #1 favorite vocal coach on the internet, so this video is heaven-sent! I'm sad that Jari scares you, but those weren't the most appealing expressions hahaha. You should check out their song "Time" when you get a chance, it has more clean vocals. I would also LOVE to see you react to something by Symphony X! 😘

Been waiting for this reaction for... forever :D
So, some (hopefully useful and interesting) background info: the blonde singer, Jari' Mäenpää has lost 40% of his lung functionality/capacity due to a TBC disease he's suffered when he was in (mandatory) military service, he still has a great vocal range. However, this song does not show so much of this vocal range of his, you should try a song from The Forest Seasons album, the best choice would be "Loneliness (Winter)", and the Official Lyric Video (a song inspired by the death of the singer's father). Truly a heart-tearing song, will surely make you cry.
Btw Jari writes all of the music and of the lyrics. Also, he is greatly (!) inspired by Devin Townsend (e.g. you can hear the Devin-ish wall-of-sound). He also wrote 2 albums for a band called Ensiferum (the first 2 albums which were released in 2001 and 2004), which are also worth a shot, but I'd strictly recommend the studio versions as there are barely a few normal quality live videos with Jari, he's left Ensiferum in 2004 to create Wintersun - and the newer live versions of those songs without Jari don't perfectly reflect the original atmosphere.
Oh, and yes, the guy with the green guitar, Teemu Mantysaari gives lessons :D They now have another guitar player, because Jari decided to contentrate 100% on vocals, and they needed someone to play Jari's guitar parts... so they got a guy, who's also been a friend of them for a few years, a great guy with beautiful voice and stunning guitar technique, Asim Searah... he also gives lessons, both via Skype as well :)
It's still astonishing that you hear those tiny vocal parts, melodies and background-layers that most people don't even care for :D This is why I always return to your channel.
    Have a great day!

Jari lost 25% of his lungs to tuberculosis while serving in the army. Yet he pulls this off night after night. I recommend seeing Wintersun-Loneliness(Winter) It's his best vocal performance and really showcases his skills the best. He's insanely talented, the band in the video is one thing but each song on that album had up to 400 layers of orchestrations playing at once and the orchestral layer alone could stand alone as a very complex piece of classical music (they released the isolated tracks 2 years ago). Just phenomenal musician. ALSO, no effects on the voice. This is what he does _Live_

This band is so awesome and talented. Seeing them live is insane because, even though you'd think they have to roll with the punches to some degree, they are still tight and all together in the moment. Totally amazing. And yeah, Jari does have a scary, toothy face that he makes sometimes, but we love him anyway. :) Awesome to see you react to them. Try Loneliness or Land of Snow and Sorrow for a bit of a softer sound.

Yaassssss Wintersun. I still think Time is the better performance though ;) There's a scream at the end ("please don't leave me now") that gives me chills every time. Unfortunately the vocals are a little buried in the mix for these rehersals too but goddamn what a band they are. Jari's given up the guitar for live performances now, but the fact that he used to play lead + handle vocals at the same time is just insane.

Metal singers usually work the same way: dude figures out that he can sing, fronts a band. Then they get signed, he gets vocal lessons, gets better. By the time they get to the first real album, the benefits show. The best metal frontmen are all trained vocalists. It's like Tenacious D's own Jack Black said, "There's no such thing as a Rock prodigy /Cos Rock'n'Roll is bogus / Right KG? (RIGHT)!
