The Finnish bands have mastered making harsh vocals express things like sorrow, heartbreak, regret, and majesty, instead of anger, evil, and aggression. All very primal emotions. It's visceral, rather than evil.
it is because our history, it is full of those things. first germans and their masters tried for thousand years to took our lands, eventually succeeded. after that they oppressed us for the next thousand years and still goes on. they tell us how long winter is the reason for our melancholy, but in reality it is our history. funny how swedes or norwegians (germans) are not melancholy at all even tho they have as long winters as we do. histroy is a lie, and that is why no one ever learns from it.. keep that in mind
When you listen to this kind of music you have to remember the role of winter because a lot of this music started in countries where winter is an important factor in the culture and their lives. Nature and winter are violent and cruel yet silent and beautiful. Strong vocals do not always refer to something bad but strong emotions, actions, or events.
EXACTLY ! i was just going to comment this, im from Finland and you nailed perfectly what this song is hintin to audience, its not evil, it sounds like its sang by man who have gone hell and back and now is singin all of hes frustration and emotions in this not song i call this a piece
Winter is cold and unforgiving but it’s not personal. That’s what I love about Time. It’s such a brutal album, but never does it feel like it’s a targeted brutality.
Wintersun is such a gem! I would strongly recommend "Time", from the same recording sessions. Also, if you want to focus on Jari's clean vocals only, you should listen to the acoustic version of "Loneliness (Winter)" from "The Forest Seasons" album.
Fun fact, the drummer is Kai Hahto, and he's the drummer of Nightwish, and the Bassist, Jukka, is now the session bassist for Nightwish too. Apparently Nightwish is slowly poaching all their members... or perhaps merging... Winterwish? Nightsun? :P :D
Jari would be the only one able to replace Marko vocals...but it's just a dream ... I don't think it will come true. It would be too beautiful to sing with Floor.
Harsh vocals are meant to convey the heightened emotion of whatever's going on. It's not necessarily evil, but it's meant to convey some sort of intense emotion. It can be evil, but it can also be just rage, fear, joy, excitement, whatever. It's USUALLY not joy, but it can be.
I'd only add grief, somberness or seriousness to this. Kalmah's Moon of my night is a pretty good example for this. Insomnium has a ton of songs with harsh vocals: While we sleep, Valediction, Bereavement, The Elder, they're all intense, not a drop of evil.
I was going to comment, but you stated exactly what I was going to say so much more succinctly. Therefore, I like and comment to make sure this gets noticed!
I know alot of people will recommend "Time" and "Land of snow and sorrow". But my recommendation from Wintersun will be "Loneliness". The lyric is so emotional because they are about how Jari felt because of the death of his father.. He literally isolated himself for a week to get in the proper state of mind for how he felt during this period of his life to reflect that in his vocals.
I think the emotion, tone and hurt in Jari's voice is so fitting the theme of the song and the depression of winter that it is briljant. One of the best vocal performances i know, maybe the best!
Even though this hasn't as many likes as many of your other videos, I still think this is one of the best reaction Videos out there, period. Watched it so many times.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate someone of your musical background giving a band like Wintersun a go. I could tell the heaviness and brutality was too much for you at times, but you persevered and critiqued in a way that didn't make me think that you just hated it. It's always nice seeing some introduced to the bands you love. Even if it's outside your normal tastes. I just love listening to your opinions and expertise. Thank you Elizabeth :)
Jari is actually missing about 20% of his lung due to devoloping tuberculosis during his military service, which is why he can seem a little tensed up when singing
@@DarkRedman31 Tuberculosis is a lung disease, in the 1800s, people with it were often called black lung because they would cough up blood a great deal, and it would eventually kill them.
@@DarkRedman31 It forms massive necrotic lesions in the lungs, due to the immune system trying to wall the infection off, which patients usually hack up.

Me: "okay, today I'll sleep early... but before that, just a quick look at RUclips, including Elizabeth's channel" **I see Elizabeth made Sons of Winter and Stars reaction video** Me again: "okay, I won't sleep tonight"
This is actually a "motivational" song for you to do your best every day. One major reason why it took so long to release this song was that there were no pc enough with CPU capacity to be able to handle all the backing tracks. Sometimes the have almost like 300 backing tracks. And the mixing also cause he, Jari, is known to be a "perfectionist". Thank you very many!!!!
I don't remember the exact year I discovered them, it was around 2007 when I was in my last high school years for sure. Anyways, I became immediately a fan after the short piece Beyond The Dark Sun. Such a great band! I wish they could produce more material faster. Cheers from France! 🍻
We need no only more Wintersun reactions but also a tea Time interview with Jari. You know Elizabeth? Nightwish drummer and new bassist are playing in this band. Choose Time for next Wintersun reaction.
Hi Elizabeth, this is my first time listening to Wintersun and I enjoyed this performance. Jari is a great composer/lead vocalist/guitarist, and his transition from growls to clean vocals was flawless. And Kai was a relentless drummer. The backing vocals-choir/orchestra were also amazing on this masterpiece. Thank you, Elizabeth!!! 💙
Watching you gradually become more of a metalhead over time is a truly joyful experience - Melodic and Progressive death metal like Wintersun is so great and I'm happy you're listening to and appreciating it :)
I have never thought of Wintersun as melodic death metal before, because to me they have a lot of power metal in their sound especially with all of the orchestration layers. But I guess the harsh vocals could put them in a melodeath category.
I will only be happy if someday we get a review on "Cast Down the Herectic" by Nile. But I'd be happy with "Gateways" or "Progenies (...)" by Dimmu Borgir. Realistically, an analysis of Rush's "Tom Sawyer" would also be excellent.
Yes, Finnish Amorphis has pleasing and soothing harsh vocals when needed. Their singer's growls are a force of nature and cleans are really velvety. Please listen to their Brother and Sister. There you will hear soothing growls bc you hear nature in them. And the song is really good. As anything else from them.
I would also mention bands whose songs are about subjects like space and philosophy. Vintersorg, Obscura, Stortregn, Belakor. Their music doesn't concentrate on darkness and evil, and the use of growls is less about aggression and more about conveying ideas that are beyond the ordinary scale, larger than life.
To me, the harsh vocals are soothing mostly because I can take all the bad stuff from my life, scream them, and just leave the good. I see it more therapeutically than just screams for the sake of screaming.
Favorite moments from Elizabeth: just when the metal band moves from a quiet part to "metal" sound. This is metal and I love Elizabeth for her spontaneous reactions.
Your commenting, reactions, and expressions are exactly why I’m a subscriber. No one can deny your passion for music and that is something your audience can feel

You will love the song "Loneliness" by Wintersun. You can see the emotion on Jaris voice and more clean vocals. To me, one of the best songs ever made.
@@kimmorintamaki4422 In my opinion you should listen to the whole album. Different songs in it changing are like changing a page while reading a book, or maeby more like chapter, and just like a book, you have to read all the pages to fully understand it!
I think Loneliness is a super underrated song. It so perfectly captures the feeling of chronic depression. At least it does for the depression that I felt at my lowest point in college. "The weight of the world quietly crushed the dying light" is *such* a great line for describing my own depression. P.S. I'm doing much better now; that was like 10 years ago.
Being front row seeing this song performed live was probably the single best experience of my life. Getting to shake hands with these guys after was surreal as well, absolutely love this song.
Late to the party I know, when I saw Wintersun years ago in a tiny venue I got so overcome with emotion during this song that I cried my eyes out, and then again during 'Time'. I don't know where it came from and was a bit embarrassed but I looked around and I wasn't the only one, we sang our hearts out! 😂💖
Your take on the amount of sound nailed it Elizabeth. I've been a fan of Wintersun since the first album. The second came out like 8 years later. Jari used to work alone, layering and layering tracks. That's how they accumulated their unique feel. But when this album hit he decided to take the band on the road and even stopped playing live guitar to focus on his vocals. He has surrounded himself with virtuoso talents too.
Who's gonna mention that Jari is missing 1/4th of his lungs? Also the only kind of harsh vocals that are similar too soothing would be stuff like the band Insomnium, where they're more melodic and the vocals are more mellow.
Specifically their track Heart Like a Grave might be a good starting place; I don't know if it's vocally varied enough to justify a reaction video, but it's a great example of a piece in which the harsh vocals express a more subdued and melancholic feeling (aided by the overall thematics of the song). Another Finnish band, incidentally; a band which sounds quite different from Wintersun, but draws from some of the same emotional and lyrical themes (as do many in or peripheral to the Finnish melodeath scene).
It's so nice to have someone with real musical training confirm that, as I thought, Wintersun is stupidly complex! I was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone mentioned it, but as far as I know, Jari writes all the lyrics and music, which just amazes me. Also, on the first album, he played every instrument except drums!
It takes a lot of courage for an opera singer to listen a long track like this and find the positive part. Even for me, it is not easy on a first listening! Great job!
Wintersun - Loneliss, please do it, I've been planning to request it has ben awhile, but didn't find a song that could fit with the request, what a perfect opportunity, is less heavier, much more sentimental and has some awesome vocals, I'll keep an eye hoping for it, love your reactions, very entertaining
After a while you get to stop seeing growled vocals as 'evil', and more as... an extension of the range of emotions the vocallist can use to portray what they need to
Hi, I've just found your channel and it's really amazing to see someone outside of the world of heavy music digging it so much as you!!! I love it. As a kid I went to classical music school and played cello; really hated it but I've finished first level of musical education and it gave me somehow deeper understanding of what is happening in a piece like that. Later I've got into playing guitar and thanks to that I've started to really have fun with music and discover new stuff. There are more or less complex songs in metal, but this one, despite how cheesy it is (epic melodeath/power metal, very clean, sterile 'nordic' prodution, heroic motives) is really one of the greatest compositions in this subgenre and probably best one Wintersun have ever made. Vocals are one thing but the guitarwork is really sick on this one, there are so many complex riffs with buildups and evolving structure - for example the lead melody (6:05) have 3 similiar repeats but the 4th phrase is crazy, with syncopation and it leads to the break. Then the same story repeats with high lead starting with regular structure at 14:13 and with advenced structure, beginning with sweep arppegio at 14:50 - it's not even a solo, it's just crazy lead melody that leads to so called "Jaris killer riff" at 15:05. Amount of syncopation and evolving accentuation in this riff is - as you said - hard to comprehend. Of course - there are some repetetive fragments, but overall amount of progressivnes, difficulty and endurance needed to play this is astounding. Even more fun fact is that they played this live in one take durring this session. PS: there is an insede joke about wintersun albums, that they take so much time to make, because boys don't have enough RAM needed for mixing all the VST plugins. PS 2: This song is really amazing during winter, when you go for a night walk to the park with headphones on, everything is covered with thick snow.. I guess they went for the exact feeling you mentioned at 26:48. Kind greetings from Poland, keep up your amazing work!:)
"Neat" x) Been Wintersun fan for years but this song really hit me when one winter night I was walking back home after few drinks and the night sky was FULL of stars! I could see my breath and it was very cold night too with tons of snow on the trees.. As it happens, I'm from Finland like the band is as well..

It was from their first self-titled album in 2005 I think.
"The mixing must be a nightmare..." It was. That's why it took so damn long to be released. All the guitar and drum work was complete. Jari spent 5 years mixing the symphony.
This song perfectly displays why you should try your best to have all of your band members be able to sing. It turns an amazing song to a masterpiece. Lovely video as always Elizabeth!
You know, ive listened to this song maybe 1000 times, Wintersun being my favorite band. But i have NEVER heard that voice wayyyyyy in the background that you pointed out near the beginning. It is there, there is a lovely voice! This is why I love what you do E 🥰, thank you once again!
Coming here after their new album dropped. Check out their new song "One With the Shadows". It's half the length but just as epic! Also, FYI Jari is a HUUUUGE Devin Townsend fan. If you listen you can hear huge similarities in the mix. Specifically the vocal layering and playing around with those higher ranges.
You'd probably be happy to know that the drummer AND bassist in this are now in Nightwish, the drummer full time, and the bassist as a session, as unfortunately Marko left the band earlier this year.
Yessss I love Wintersun! More beautiful songs from them: "Time" and "Loneliness - Winter". It's funny that I've never really thought of his harsh vocals as evil, they're just pretty damn cool hahah :)
Alright, the first thing I did when I found this channel was: searching for the analysis of this masterpiece and well, what a pleasent surprise. Yes, it is really harsh/evil-like vocal, but believe me when you read this: "HIS VOCALS ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO MATCH”. There’s too much to catch about this masterpiece and you’re right, almost impossible to mix (think about the power of his voice to be that present in the whole piece and never get lost in the layering). That’s what make it more astonishing. Really love this channel, Thanks Elizabeth. Maybe you can consider “Loneliness (Winter)” from Wintersun’s latest album. Jari’s vocal performence there is beautiful, clear and EPIC. Cheers. 🙌🏻
Wintersun: We Make Better Music During Rehearsals Than Most Bands Can Aspire To On Their Best Day -- Yes, please react to Time next, as it's arguably more epic than this masterpiece.
I think SOWAS is more epic but Time is more soulful. Both are awesome tracks and I hope Elizabeth gives Time a shot. There was something this dude said . . . "Alloys have to Exist" . . . no. "Ingots Should Be Present". No. Wait . . . METAL MUST BE!!! 🤘
@@oglschmitt So far, in the time Helloween wrote, recorded and published a studio album of new songs, Wintersun has not finished a live album. Really, how much fiddling do you need to do on a LIVE album, ffs. Not that I'm impatient or disapointed or anything... 😏😴
I love this. I feel your reactions to Sons of Winter and Stars are pretty much everyone's reaction. It's so grand and it builds up in this beautiful choir saying that we are part of the universe, no matter how cold the winter is, the fire burns in our hearts and won't be extinguished. It goes from dusk to dawn or winter to spring in 14 amazing minutes. Maybe one day i'll be able to sing that at recitals xD. Been a fan of Wintersun since the beginning, and a fan of Jari back in his Ensiferum days. To me this is pleasing harsh vocals. I love this band and Jari's writing and composting. The last chorus has been my ringtone (i don't hear it much because my phone is always on vibrate) since Time came out. I love it, i love that many metal vocalists came together to record it, Wintersun and Jari, because he's adorable and so funny, are such gems and deserve so much more recognition.
You really need to listen Insomnium! "While we sleep" or new songs like "The Conjurer". I'd say those guys nailed some pleasing and longing harsh vocals.
Wintersun has become my new favorite band, and I didn’t even like growling before I heard Jari doing it (Floor helped also), so I’ve been hoping you would get to this for a long time. Please check out “Time” soon from the same rehearsal session. I think it’s even better. Unfortunately I have a few meetings tomorrow morning, so I’ll probably miss the premiere, but I’ll definitely catch the video on my lunch break.
I swear, no music has more presence than Wintersun, at least in my experience. Classical and Opera music of course have so much more presence than your usual song, but Wintersun really manages to blow even that out the water, its such a shame that they aren't as well known as maybe they ought to be.
Oh man this is gonna be really good, cant wait! *Regarding the harsh vocals thing I find after repeated listening they eventually can become a little soothing yea.
If you're interested in hearing more of Jari's clean vocals I would recommend analyzing the song Loneliness (Winter). I think it's a great showcase for his clean vocals. For that the album version if probably the best bet.
Thank you so much for reacting to this, Elizabeth. It’s nice to know my comments and multiple requests for this song were seen. 🙂 I definitely do have some thoughts to share with you about this, but I’ll have to do that later for now. As you’ve no doubt seen from other people commenting, Wintersun’s/Jari’s song “Loneliness” is another great one to check out. It’s almost all clean vocals, and Jari gives us his best singing and lyrical work to date. Indeed, Jari’s singing vocals have only become better and better through time. Not bad for a guy who’s missing a quarter of one of his lungs from Tuberculosis!
The first time I saw Wintersun was at their first ever show in the USA (I believe) in Tempe, AZ. It was perfect weather facing east during a full moon at an outdoor venue. This song always brings me back to that day. What a great reaction and analysis! Cheers!
One of the original prime motivators for harsh vocals was to make sure the music would never ever become mainstream and commercialised, and OH did it work 👌 Underground bands were kinda sick of the corporate world getting their grubby and cheapening hands on their music. Apart from loving your professional input (I learn a lot from your analysis), I love your reaction and your open mind. Your adorable physical reactions are more or less representative of my internal reaction when I hear this music. Love it! This song is a freaking masterpiece and deserves waaaaay more acclaim!! I listen to it at least twice a day! 😁🤘
I love your videos and watching you discover bands and music I already know. It's just like re-discovering them all over again through your ears. I'm also learning a lot about the structures of Music and Vocal Techniques thanks to you. And you're very cute too, charming :) Music brings out emotions out of me, deep, emotional and so pure and raw, like nothing else can. I really think anyone who delves into metal with an open mind just cannot help falling in love with it. There's something for everyone in Metal. I'm 55 and I was exposed to Sabbath when I was 6 by a bunch of cool uncles. I can't thank them enough. Metal is part of me now and forever.
Ah wintersun. Never ever expected this lol! Listen to them a long time ago, Beyond the dark sun is an absolute classic by them. Also Ensiferum was amazing when Yari was the lead, Into Battle for example. And if you are getting into melodic death metal, Insomnium is an absolute must listen!
Alright, if you're willing to do a 14 minute epic song on this show, I beg of you: 'And Then There Was Silence' by Blind Guardian. The story of the Trojan War in one track. It's incredible.
For real, Hansi has such an incredible voice! I'd love to hear Elizabeth react to him. And the layers of vocals in And Then There Was Silence is outstanding, plus the vastly different musical themes throughout. I do think there are songs that showcase Hansi a little better, like The Eldar or Mirror, Mirror especially since she's such a nerd I think Nightfall In Middle Earth should be right up her alley. But ATTWS is one of my all-time favorite songs!
such an amazing song! (and one I can actually sing :D, damn you Jari!) In the song, it's like you can hear the snow falling down! as a Finn, I love listen to it while trying to get to work through the snow
Hey Elizabeth, first I want to thank you for being so thorough, interested, and, I would even say, polite, to first do some research about the piece and the artist. Second, thanks for sharing your open-minded journey into metal with us, it's very wholesome to watch how you confront and learn to embrace everything about the music I love so much. The way you duck from the wall of sound makes me laugh XD But this just goes to show how metal conveys a very special energy (and lots of it!), like just no other genre of music is able to. Same goes for the harsh vocals. My take is as follows: they developed within and from "loud" and "angry" styles of music like rock, punk, and hardcore punk, and simply became their own thing in metal, providing a signature sound to the new genre. Most early death or black metal bands of course used them to sound evil, aggressive and inhumane, but listeners build up a tolerance for this effect, and then those styles of music developed further, e.g. giving us melodic death metal (where you might categorise Wintersun into). Now you might end up with a lot of beautiful melodies and harmonies, and non-evil, non-violent lyrics to go with them, but clean vocals alone will have difficulty conveying the same kind of intensity as can be achieved with harsh vocals. An example: the band Unperfectum released their song "Save my Soul" in two versions: one with only harsh vocals, and one where the chorus is sung cleanly, doubling the already present guitar melody. While I love me some melodeath with a good clean vocal line to sing along to, I definitely prefer the harsh vocal version of this song, because it amplifies the longing and desperation of the lyrics.
Wintersun is my favorite band and the one that inspires me the most when I write my own music, always fun to see those reaction vids! Also in my opinion Jari is one of the best singers, period. He can sing powerfully really high plus he has the cleanest growl I ever heard!
For me lyrics sounds like story of Finnish people. Sons of winter and stars we definetely has winter and stars. We game far beyond Time. I live in Finland nearby a historical landmark with rock paintings from 5000 BC. And since Jari is finnish it easy for me to think he has used Finnish history and mytology as inspiration to this Song.
I was wondering if the fact that Jari is missing a part of one of his lungs would affect his singing in anyway or does the body adjust for that. You were talking about his endurance and to me having less than full lung capacity would have to have some influence on that.
In my opinion, which no one asked, there might be a better singer for some parts of these songs. But then again, these are his songs, so he can do whatever he feels like. Still great songs!
Not necessarily. My father had to have one lung removed because of a tumor (not cancer). Apparently the one he has left can take over about 80% of what he had before, more or less.
The youngest sister in Og3ne (definitely not metal) has only one lung and is, in my opinion, the better singer of the three. So it does not seem to have a great effect on the vocals, but it can have an effect on the stamina.
@@hermanwillemsen2860 Yes I remember hearing about that and you are right she as a great voice and seems to have no problem with signing long notes that require lots of breath control.
As with everyone else, I do recommend you react to Time since I think it showcases their vocals even better but I'm happy with this and your introduction to Wintersun
The drummer is Kai Hahto, he's a straight up legendary in Finnish metal circles, if you're fine with grindcore or just want to see him go ham, check out Rotten Sound (Exit and before).
I know this is a bit late, but talking about soothing harsh vocals: Tomi Joutsen (Amorphis). Man I love his voice, he has nice clean vocals but his growls are something else, so deep and dark, yet I find them also really relaxing. I'd recommend live versions of Amorphis' "The Bee", "Majestic Beast", "Black Winter Day" and "Bad Blood", I think those are some of the songs that really show what he can do. There are also songs that have only clean vocals ("House of Sleep", "From the Heaven of My Heart") and only harsh vocals ("Sign From the North Side")
I think that the contrast of harsh vocals really works with the beautiful melodies of other instruments and I honestly think harsh vocals can sound beautiful when accompanied with these beautiful sounds! Not evil at all but just beautiful in its own way.
Came to say, I'm amazed at how beautiful the breakdown and analysis of this glorious epic track is. Moreso, Elizabeth is so involved thruout the track and as a viewer also a first time listener of this track it becomes very easy to develop an interest in Metal with the understanding one gets by watching this. Been an ardent fan of Jari's creative brilliance for a long time, have seen many reviews/analysis videos of his work, but yours is one of the best by far! Hope you're able to find more metal that builds your love for this extreme artform. You could look at this track that's melodic, enchanting, evocative, and harsh all at the same time, and the imagery in the video is the definition of the word ENORMOUS. Another Finnish band...
Yes Loneliness is an amazing song that needs all the attention possible!
Oh man how could I forget about Lonliness! I definitely agree with you!
+1 for Loneliness. My fav track from Wintersun
I think the emotion, tone and hurt in Jari's voice is so fitting the theme of the song and the depression of winter that it is briljant. One of the best vocal performances i know, maybe the best!
Loneliness is great, but I think it would get more recommendations if it was a studio session or a live recording as opposed to a lyric video.
I’m sure Jari would be willing to join you for tea time to discuss his technique.

Ooooof, great song. Next of that studio album recording is "Time", please do that one too.
Jari is actually missing about 20% of his lung due to devoloping tuberculosis during his military service, which is why he can seem a little tensed up when singing
I didn't know tuberculosis could damage lungs, it's a first for me.

This is actually a "motivational" song for you to do your best every day. One major reason why it took so long to release this song was that there were no pc enough with CPU capacity to be able to handle all the backing tracks. We need no only more Wintersun reactions but also a tea Time interview with Jari. You know Elizabeth? Nightwish drummer and new bassist are playing in this band. Choose Time for next Wintersun reaction.
Time is good, but I'd prefer something off the first album, for example Sadness and Hate
Wintersun is probably the most underrated metal band ever!
They are f*king masters
Wintersun - Silver leaves have to happen, that song is just to awesome. They just released Time 2.
Yes! I alwaus found well rounded low growls soothing. Amorphis, Septic Flesh, Opeth, Moonspell, Mourning Beloveth.
@@imokin86 Dude, haven't heard anybody mention Vintersorg in AGES! Have a good one

The acoustic version Of it
Try "Loneliness (Winter)" by them, it shows a bit more of Jari's vocal capabilities imo. It's also emotional as hell. He's amazing.

Being front row seeing this song performed live was probably the single best experience of my life. Getting to shake hands with these guys after was surreal as well, absolutely love this song.
His harsh vokals have become soothing to me. It portrays so much will, longing, disappointment and desire all inn one its crazy. Love his voice.
Jari’s body language isn’t traditional when singing because he is missing part of a lung.

I love it. Seems like Nightwish’s “Phantom of the Opera” was her gateway drug.
I receive Jari's vocals more as breaking free, powerful, strong and wild than opressive. But I have been listening to harsh vocals for about 15 years
Well said
Kai Hahto is one of the greatest drummers alive today!!!! 💥🥁💥
Who's gonna mention that Jari is missing 1/4th of his lungs?
Also the only kind of harsh vocals that are similar too soothing would be stuff like the band Insomnium, where they're more melodic and the vocals are more mellow.
Yeah, Insomnium is a great recommendation for less intense harsh vocals. Totally a different feeling (and a great one IMO).
"While we sleep" would be good place to start. Only down side is that it has lot of reactions already.
Correction more like 1/5 , lungs are not symmetrical , you have 3 parts one one side and 2 on other .
I find wintersun vocals to be quite soothing
Check out his earlier band, Ensiferum. You'd probably dig "Lai Lai Hei" the best. It's very folky and very metaly.
She might enjoy Cry For The Earth Bounds as well. It's harsh vocals are very emotional.
I've been listening to both bands for at least a decade maybe longer and never knew they were from the same guy.
I love take of revenge from Ensiferum
While I love Lai Lai Hei probably in my top 5 of all Ensiferum songs, it's not one I necessarily want to see analysed from a vocal perspective.
I would love to see some Ensiferum on this channel. Iron would be a blast.
Wintersun might be one of the best bands of all time. Certainly, Yari is one of the best composers

"Neat" x)

There’s too much to catch about this masterpiece and you’re right, almost impossible to mix (think about the power of his voice to be that present in the whole piece and never get lost in the layering). That’s what make it more astonishing.

Into the battle and lailaihei is my favourite ensiferum songs.

Hey Elizabeth,
first I want to thank you for being so thorough, interested, and, I would even say, polite, to first do some research about the piece and the artist.
My take is as follows:
they developed within and from "loud" and "angry" styles of music like rock, punk, and hardcore punk, and simply became their own thing in metal, providing a signature sound to the new genre.
Besides all the other stuff about this song, this was a bravura performance by Kai Hahto, who is now the drummer of Nightwish!
I didn't expect to see Wintersun, very happily surprised. Now I'm waiting for Cradle of Filth - Her Ghost in the Fog.
Did you just bring in hot topic metal into a wintersun video...
Wintersun is my favorite band and the one that inspires me the most when I write my own music, always fun to see those reaction vids!
Also in my opinion Jari is one of the best singers, period. He can sing powerfully really high plus he has the cleanest growl I ever heard!
The best analysis I have ever heard for this song. Congratulations, you are the best.🥰
A 45 minute breakdown of an epic metal masterpiece, respect!
Finally you reacted to the best song of the century!
"I want to read papers (x3)...about functionality of harsh vocals in metal."
Also, first time hearing this band and that drummer is incredible!
The drummer is Kai Hahto. He also plays in Nightwish now
The drummer is Kai Hahto, he's a straight up legendary in Finnish metal circles, if you're fine with grindcore or just want to see him go ham, check out Rotten Sound (Exit and before).
There are also songs that have only clean vocals ("House of Sleep", "From the Heaven of My Heart") and only harsh vocals ("Sign From the North Side")
and he can hold a note like no other
And I'm late too but Amorphis really is the band that first got me to appreaciate growls. They even felt beautiful to me. And relaxing, as you say.
Omnium Gatherum - The Unknowing
"So much sound." And when you internalize it, it's so beautiful.
