  • My journey with Nightwish did not begin at the beginning, as many journeys should. Instead, it began by reacting to and analyzing Floor Jansen, Nightwish’s current lead singer. So in this video, we're going back to the beginning to learn where Nightwish came from, and listening to their original and legendary female lead singer, Tarja Turunen.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Nightwish and to this arrangement of The Phantom of the Opera that was created by the band's leading member, Tuomas. It also features Marco Hietala on male vocals. (!!!!)

Nightwish is from Kitee Finland. Formed in 1996. (She was saying kittos to the crowd. Thank you in Finnish. A small village on the lake shore near the Eastern border with Russia. Tuomas, Emppu and Tarja formed the band. Jakku and Sammi ( ex bassist) joined later.
Tuomas is a year older then Tarja. His mother was Tarja's teacher. Heck she was the only piano teacher in the village.
The two knew each other in Highschool.
Marko has classical training himself and sang with his brothers in a band called Taro before Nightwish (2001 -2021).
The idea was for a folk rock band. But Tarja's powerful voice moved him to pursue metal. Finland loves metal. They produced 5 albums up to ONCE in 2004. With Tarja as lead singer. This footage was fimed for the DVD. It was ONCE that shot them to world wide fame.
It was filmed the last night of the ONCE upon a Tour. Hartwell Arena, Helsinki Finland. 11, 500 in attendance. October 21, 2005. It turned out to be her last night with the band. In fact she was singing through a head cold & throat infection that kept her from singing at the sound check.
The concert was epic. She has 5 costumes that night. That one was the first. The red one next. The black with shoulder straps and a yellow skirt. The gown for sleeping sun, and a flowing
White number for the end of the night. Something I am sure you'll appreciate as to the time and effort. And colour matching her microphone to the outfits is her signature.
There was a festival (Flatlanders) filmed in The Netherlands (August 2005) where she was not sick, but being open air you don't get the costumes or effects. Anyway after her dismissal in a way everyone now regrets and has apologized to her for, this became known as End of an Era. They have buried the hatchet. They are on talking terms now. Just this year Tarja re recorded Dark Chest of Wonders for Crewwish. The crew behind the band who put on a show with the equipment and it was arranged in both senses by Tuomas. A reunion is not imminent but hey 2025 would be the anniversarry and a limited tour with Tarja & Marko as guests would sell like gang busters.
Marko reached out to Tarja first and sang with her at a Christmas concert where they were guests in 2012. Hugging and crying backstage were reported. And after her version in Finnish of Ave Maria they were hugging on stage. Marko keeping his hand on her shoulder.
Since that time he was a guest on stage at a German festival. The band has married, lost parents etc and they have made peace as I said.
Tarja and Floor were friends whilst Tarja was still in Nightwish. That hasn't changed. Floor got her blessing to join Nightwish after Anette had to leave tour as she went into labour over Christmas in the USA. Floor brought in as a temp but is now a full member. No impediments but time and will to a reunion.
Tarja went solo in 2007. She now has 9 albums, 6 specials, 3 DVDs, a side project called Outlanders ( electronic music) with world famous musicians. A best.of:Living the Dream dropped a month ago. Dec, 02, 22. So much music to discover. But to see what she can really do with a high note. 2016, Woodstock Poland ( no relation) and a cover of Muse, Supremacy. It will knock your socks off. She has only grown in the last 17 years. Happy New Year

I can never adjust to Tarja’s sound, as a Dutchie who is more aware of both later nightwish and Floor’s previous bands. That said I can acknowledge how impressive Tarja is. Technically she’s obviously one of the best, her sound is just not my thing.
What I’ve noticed (since you’d probably be wondering why I’m in the comment section of a ‘Tarja’ song) is that Marco is the one that gets the most ‘wtf’ response when it comes to this performance.
Yes Tarja is a great (technically very impressive) singer (and I give her props, she’s just my not gig), but Marco steals the show here.
So who wins in a poll of all of Nightwish’s singers? I guess it’s Marco ;)
That (jokingly) said, all infighting is not very productive. Preference is preference and it’s does not have to take away from capabilities of singers and artists in the genre

I like Floor, she is a great, she sings with different voices during the songs which is cool and bautiful cause u never know what she is going to do...but i prefer Tarja too she is the heart of nightwish, Tarja is the angel that sings its stories while Tuomas is the poet that writes the story... Tarja is sometimes an angel, a ghost, a mistress, a banshee, a siren, a messenger... she gives the band the haunting atmosphere, melodical operatic singing is what made me love this band... the best of both worlds, epic and haunting, sad and beautiful... Tarja is the best by far, miss her too...

Elizabeth! I'm hoping you would react to Nightwish "Islander", Tampere 2015, because Marko is using his mellow, clear, soft tones. And his interaction with the audience is so nice to watch. With a twist of humor.
The song is composed by Marko himself. Tuomas had heard him playing and singing it in a dressing room, and Tuomas wanted it to be a Nightwish song, and he wanted to write new lyrics to it, and he did. For once a simple story from Tuomas, no need to read between the lines. And those are Tuomas' words, not mine.
By the way, I learned from some Nightwish fans that at some point Marko went thru a throat surgery, but it didn't go as planned. So he had to work hard to try and restore his voice again.

In my opinion this is the most genuine version of this song. Their voices and styles are so contrary that they reflect the contrarity of christine and the phantom more than I heard it anywhere else, yet so harmonizing and powerful. Also Marco's melody-line is different than others do it. Most go down when they sing together, while he goes up the first time. This adds more emotion to it. I love Floor and she nails every song by her versatile skills. Especially Ghost Love Score has come to a new level. But there are some songs, that need this contrast of this continous operatic style that Tarja sings.

@@WABP860 probably you're referring to a specific performance, cause it's not as obvious to me yet as you might think.
First of all: it's not about the female part alone. So this is not about who is the better singer.
The versions I heard with Sierra so far were not that special...
She sings great, then he sings great, then they sing together... "great" of course.... And the music plays on.....
But there is no tension... No connection between the intonation of the sung melody and the meaning of it's words. Especially in the beginning. Sierra sings the line beautifully of course... But not genuinely as she would mean it. I don't believe her that "the phantom of the opera is here.... Inside my mind". And even if it was in Sierra's mind: it doesn't seem to bother her.
Just by the way she sings it Tarja also shows that she isn't comfortable with him haunting her mind.
Sierra is a great singer without a doubt, but that is not what I was referring to.
A big part have also the male voice and the music, which are simply boring in most common performances.

I respect that opinion and I was like that for a bit right when she left, but "While your lips are still red" sung predominantly by Marko made me change my mind. @@akidazami I agree that Tarja's voice really started it all and that her voice and the band's music put Nightwish on the map. Anette received the baton from Tarja, she was a fine vocalist... but ultimately not the one for Nightwish. I love both Tarja and Floor. I don’t really like how everyone seems to be all about Floor and have forgotten about Tarja- because it was she who made Nightwish the popular band they are.
And she has an amazing voice with so much depth and colour. It’s quite a dark colour, which is lovely and goes with metal well. I’d say that she’s not as versatile as Floor, ad Floor often plays up the contrast between the lightness of her voice and the music, which works wonderfully. Of course, Floor doesn’t have the sheer power of Tarja.
So basically, two very lovely leading ladies, with very different, but both wonderful voices. I love them equally.
