Classic Game Room reviews SPEED RACER on SNES, a racing game and platformer action game based on the Speed Racer cartoon.
CGR Speed Racer review has Speed Racer SNES review footage recorded from Speed Racer Super Nintendo! Speed Racer Super Nintendo review shows that Speed Racer really isn't all that great, the platformer part of the game is generic and the driving is awful.

The ironic thing is that accolade is a western based company and speed racer is a Japanese cartoon/anime, which explains why they kept with calling the ninjas “assasins” like the show did. (The Show did that because in the 70s when speed racer came out in the US nobody in America knew what a ninja was so they used a more familiar name, in 1994 however ninjas were easily recognizable to most Americans)

This is one of the most ineptly programmed games I've played on the SNES...
The developers were actually too lazy to make backgrounds for most of the platforming levels, so they're just grainy digitized photos. But what do you expect from Radical Entertainment, the guys who brought you the Bebe's Kids game...

For as much as I like the Snes it doesn't have too many racing games, or at least ones that I'm aware of outside of F-Zero, Super Mario Kart, Top Gear, and the Off Road games.

Great review but so disappointing about the game. You would have though Speed Racer would have had more love. The Speed Racer game for the PS1 is pretty good and right now the price is not bad. Speed Racer for the Wii is also a great game. They should give Speed Racer to Rocksteady, the company behind the Batman Arkham games and see what they can do with the franchise.
Dude, I've never seen elevation changes during racing segments with this type of POV implemented in an SNES game before. That's crazy!

The driving actually had promise. The roads are very reminiscent of GBA racing games. Had they utilized the SNES properly, the driving could have been stellar.
I have this game complete in box. Purely for nostalgia. Loved this game as a kid. Now, even the nostalgia glasses aren't good enough to keep me playing for too long most days lol.

The frame rate probably was wasted making those bumpy terrains instead of a flat land like on mario kart/F-Zero.

I think the graphics while racing look like they're drawn by crayon, but the side-scrolling graphics look nice.
The lack of blast processing is notorious in this game, yet another one for the list of things that nintendon't do. Seriously though the lack of frames has to be either bad programming
(aka zero optimization), a bad use of the mode 7, or a bad use of the hardware.
Fury Rage Compared to most snes racers it seems to be somewhat overly ambitious.
But I suspect bad coding also plays a part.
One thing you learn when trying to code these old systems is there's very little wiggle room for writing code poorly.
The snes suffers from a slow CPU speed which makes it worse, but it also suffers from 68k, z80, and x86 coders that are used to a coding style that is very inneficient on a 65816.
68000 coders are generally the worst if they can't let go of their existing mentality. - write code on a 65816 using the logic you'd use fpr a 68000 and your code will be 2-3 times slower than someone who actually knows what they are doing, and does 6502/65816 coding properly.
You can guess who will make these kinds of mistakes by their background.
Coders used to the commodore 64,Apple II, NES, Atari 2600, Atari 8 bit or Turbographx should be able to write somewhat decent snes code too.
But if they wrote ZX 80/81/spectrum code, amstrad 464, Sega master system or IBM PC, you can expect them to do poorly,
And if they wrote Amiga, Atari ST, or Macintosh software expect especially terrible snes coding in general.
The single most effective way to cripple the performance of a 65816 system is to behave as if it's a 68000 instead.
+Kuralthys "Especially terrible snes coding in general" from 68k/Z80 coders? How? I can only think of games by 68k/z80 coders that were especially badly programmed. Compile's Super Aleste/Space Mega Force is incredibly impressive for such an early game, and Compile had mainly specialized on the Master System and MSX. Super Swiv and Lawnmower Man by Amiga/Spectrum developer Storm had some really fast action with tons of stuff on screen and no slowdown. Jim Power does a lot with the SNES, and that was an Amiga port developed by guys who were used to the Amiga and CPC (Loriciel, like all French software companies at the time, had specialized on these systems). And Factor 5 made some of the most impressive games on the SNES, and they had almost exclusively made Amiga games until Super Turrican.
The games with the worst slowdown/flicker on the SNES were made by developers like Capcom (Demon's Crest), Konami (Gradius III), Irem (Super R-Type), Asmik (D-Force), Sculptured Software (Race Drivin'), not to mention Radical Entertainment (Bebe's Kids, this piece of rubbish...) - in other words, mostly NES and Arcade game developers.
I can't really come up with examples of badly programmed SNES games by Amiga coders, so giving some examples would be helpful.
THe snes is fine, the developers of the game are the culprit, take a look at super off road the Baja, it's a not flat racing game and it moves smooth for its time and has more sprites on screen, grass and that stuff.

Besides the arcade game it's the best Speed Racer game ever made.
I am a big fan of Speed Racer so may be bias.
Speed Racer and Freddie Jones are the only two men who can look manly with a neckerchief.

Game and the show would be better with Kratos behind Mark5 wheel. Kratos would make everything better.... especialy dating sims.

The Mach 5 has 5000 horsepower, gobs of torque and four wheel drive, so my money’s on Speed baby. The El Camino might have 450 horsepower tops…..if you had the correct engine option. 🚀

I don't know why but seeing this reminded me of Battle Cars, though Battle Cars is a much better and smoother racing game.

Watching the racing segments of this game is literally painful. Don't know how you made it through this review, I need a BC powder...
I don't know...it looks ok to me. As for the frame rate of the racing part, that's not unheard of for 16bit racing games. I agree it could have been better but...
i saw this game on a game informers magazine a long time ago. i read that this game was bad, according to the article i read.
Unfortunately, the best speed racer game was probably the one that came out around the time of the movie (which I actually liked). The mod for Carmageddon 2 that allows you to put the Mach 5 and Shooting Star is better.

Classic case of trying to be two things at the same time. In the end, you don't really deliver on any of the two fronts and it's a mess. Happened with the philips cdi, happened to speed racer and it'll happen to the switch.

If this game wasn't on the pricey side (I'm a CiB kinda guy) I'd give it a shot because it looks bad to the point of being hilarious. Cool intro though.
The races would have been better if they play like F-Zero: smooth and fast with higher fps and better graphic quality.

I mean the roads are technically impressive though right? They look kind of polygonal and have height variances and hills unlike mode 7 games F zero/Mario Kart. I could just be talking out of my ass.
I saw the movie and loved it, but I'm unnable to put my hand on the anime... like if it never aired in europe or something...
This game was so bad they cut the platforming to re-release this combined with another racing game to create the Stadium Events of Super Nintendo games, Mountain Bike Rally + Speed Racer. It was a game nobody wanted because it required buying a $2,000 exercise bike to play it.

probably runs so damn slow because the race map has hills and turns and all kind of crap the SNES can't handle. Almost every mode 7 game racing game I've seen the map is all on one completely flat plane, not even the fences stick out.
i mean I grew up with Speed Racer (not the movie remake) and I was born in '04!

Ah come on, speed racer is not that bad, it uses mode 7 in a amezing way because this time you also have hills on the road wich is very uncommon for mode 7 games, even mario kart lacks that .
I think it runs at 15/20fps, am mean if you find that bad, well check race drivin for the snes, it runs at a choppy 2 to 5fps so it nails this game in being that slow.
The only weird thing is that speed racer also has platform action wich is uncommon but i wich mario kart had that.

This game is TERRIBLE! I used to play it a lot with my neighbour because we were both fans of the show, we'd split the duty, one played the races and the other the platforming sections, needless to say we never went very far... Oh well, you know, there's one thing about this game that's somewhat impressive, it pulls off hills on a Mode 7 race track, which are often flat, but a few games pulled off hills in it, none of which did it well as far as I'm concerned though...
Btw, Accolade are worse than Acclaim, they're on-par with LJN when it comes to making s***ty games, if you see their logo on a game RUN AWAY!
You know what you shouldn't run away from though? The Speed Racer movie! Gosh what a great movie that was... It's great because it knows what it is, embraces it and has fun with itself, not to mention it's a lot of fun to watch, and has a striking visual style that's very colourful and dream-like~
Watch the movie, watch the show, stay away from the game...
Michirin9801 That and the Speed Racer: The movie videogame for the Wii, PS2 and DS, It's a very good racing game where you attack your oponentes with your car and shares the art style of the movie.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that one... I've played the DS version and it was allright, not bad at all, I wanted to play the Wii version but I just never got around to it... Maybe someday!

Fuck_Google+ Well, the GBA is essentially a MORE powerful SNES so not quite. This just looks like a lazily developed SNES game.
What I meant was that it look like some of the crappy games on the GBA versus what you would normally see on the SNES.
Might put this one on the SNES top ten worst games lol! Right next to Waynes World! NES worthy bad graphics, lots of lag, and terrible sound and music overall!
