Every time someone restores something, we are telling the world we don't want to be part of a throwaway culture and that's a win-win, good job, thanks for your video.
@mistermeowmeow-k8h I beg to differ. Older computers use larger electronic components. The devil called miniaturization was not there yet. The larger a part is, the easier it is to repair or replace. The cost of miniaturization is this throwaway culture...
@@wnblair I dont agree at all. It will go yellow again as the chemicals come back through again. Also youll remove needed oils from the plastic and make it more brittle.

hah nice.. the two tech ladies i love watching fix my favorite retro system. Love the Amiga's still going in 2024 Tal/Majic 12, the scene still lives :D
Wonderful job Kari! Many years ago when I was 15 we suffered a total loss house fire and many things were destroyed or damaged by fire or subsequent water to douse the fire. Many things were lost, but also many things were saved. I spent weeks of limited free time hand-cleaning old electronics, and it was remarkable how many were salvaged/worked fine after a teardown as you've done here. Best wishes for a great 2025 and beyond, keep up the great work.
oh, no that sounds dreadful ... glad you managed to save so many ... and yea, can't believe it's nearly 2025 already (that date sounds to futuristic lol)
@@karilawler I'm cautiously waiting to see what happens in 2025, based on the official military website Deagel and their forecasts for next year which they made about ten years ago. @@TheJaguar1983 I'd like to see ANY store that would repair an Amiga 600 under warranty in 2024. The warranty expired the better part of 3 decades ago... ;)
So cool, when I was a kid I wanted one of these so bad, and now they're something people find in the attic of an old house. Great video, I'd love to see a part 2.
I haven't repaired an Amiga but i have repaired a number of membrane keyboards where the silver traces have degraded or flaked away. I have used Kemo L100 car rear defroster repair fluid. Its very cheap and widely available in EU. Using it correctly is very tricky though, you need to shake the vial vigorously for several minutes, then when you uncap the vial, you can paint it on with a toothpick where you splay and flatten the end, but you only have about 20 seconds to do so, then you cap the vial again and shake it again for a minute. If the fluid isn't shaken enough, you could get a trace that looks entirely proper but just isn't nearly as conductive as it needs to be. I'm still using the vial that i bought 20 years ago.
Seems like an odd way to go about it but if it worked reliably that's a really cool solution. I've always just used magnet wire to bridge broken connections in ribbon cables.
The cleaning of a very dirty (and moldy) classic computer--so relaxing. And that it powered up! Fantastic. (a real testament to all those old machines)
Well done! Would LOVE a Part 2. You've come this far, go for the full restoration. And please ignore anyone saying these old machines are useless. They are as useful as ever if you have an interest. Hi Kari another beautiful restoration you have done i have a Amiga 600 myself and is full restored its a such top machine and also have a fully restored A1200 as well i love Amiga s. Great video, Kari. Thank you. 30 years ago I had an Amiga 500 and played Lemmings on it. This brought back some nice memories. I'd love to see a sequel to this. Cheers.
I love these videos, but man, they make me feel old :) Best Amiga game for me was "Armageddon" You could use 1 of 6 craft, three land based and three air. BUT you could link two Amigas together and team up, one covering the other. It was the first actual multi player game I ever got to play. Right there my friends and I knew the furtre in gaming would be networked.
Ive just come here, all care for the amiga left when i noticed your desk/shelv setup. Thank you for building it, now i know how it would look. ( had that idea stuck in my head :P)
Excellent work! Considering how it looked before the cleaning I'm surprised you got it working for the most part without any serious electronics work needed. Looking forward to a second part for fixing some of the issues that still remain!
RF shield question. Back in the day, lot of times to get the product to pass FCC, the US at least, you would find early models of a products would have giant shields that cover anything that could possibly cause the product to fail inspection. Later revisions of the product usually remove these shield and just cover the parts that are needed. Using excessive shielding initially gets the product on the shelf faster, moving to only necessary shielding later saves on production cost.
👀Wow, what an impressive restoration! It must have been a challenge tackling all those years of wear and potential damage, especially with the added effort of documenting it for the camera. Your attention to detail really shines, and seeing Lemmings boot up was such a nostalgic moment-amazing work!🙏
Nicely done! I had a 1000 back in the 1980s. I'd love to find one to fix up today. I'd honestly keep this 600 as it is. It has much more character revived but not restored. Thanks for sharing.
Kari, great vid once again! Even though at this point I knew you'd do the very best in getting this cleaned up, I'll admit I thought it wouldn't boot up. I used to work for an Apple repair shop and if we received a machine like that we charged a biohazard fee of $500. This was mostly to dissuade anyone from even checking the machine in for repair but I remember we received one iMac that had been stained yellow and smelled of cigarette smoke. When we opened it was one of the most disgusting things I had seen. I replaced the logicboard in it and I still can't believe the people paid for it.
Good job protecting yourself while cleaning it; you don't want something disgusting in your lungs for the rest of your life. It breaks my heart to see things in such a state, but it's so nice to see you bring it back to life!

Place a 2mm hardboard above the radiator (so it won't melt the plastic) and place the big box with everything in it and turn on the heat. In a day or two the keycaps will be like new. I used the same method on my Dreamcast.
