Every time someone restores something, we are telling the world we don't want to be part of a throwaway culture and that's a win-win, good job, thanks for your video.

@mistermeowmeow-k8h I beg to differ. Older computers use larger electronic components. The devil called miniaturization was not there yet. The larger a part is, the easier it is to repair or replace. The cost of miniaturization is this throwaway culture...

Wonderful job Kari! Many years ago when I was 15 we suffered a total loss house fire and many things were destroyed or damaged by fire or subsequent water to douse the fire. Many things were lost, but also many things were saved. I spent weeks of limited free time hand-cleaning old electronics, and it was remarkable how many were salvaged/worked fine after a teardown as you've done here. Best wishes for a great 2025 and beyond, keep up the great work.

They removed the really important data from their site during Covid though. The data is for the weapons budgets in each country, and it included adjusted population figures. I kept a copy of it in 2017 for reference I was that shocked. Hopefully they have got it wildly wrong, because if not... 😱

I haven't repaired an Amiga but i have repaired a number of membrane keyboards where the silver traces have degraded or flaked away.
I have used Kemo L100 car rear defroster repair fluid. Its very cheap and widely available in EU. Using it correctly is very tricky though, you need to shake the vial vigorously for several minutes, then when you uncap the vial, you can paint it on with a toothpick where you splay and flatten the end, but you only have about 20 seconds to do so, then you cap the vial again and shake it again for a minute. If the fluid isn't shaken enough, you could get a trace that looks entirely proper but just isn't nearly as conductive as it needs to be. I'm still using the vial that i bought 20 years ago.

    • @desiv1170

RF shield question. Back in the day, lot of times to get the product to pass FCC, the US at least, you would find early models of a products would have giant shields that cover anything that could possibly cause the product to fail inspection. Later revisions of the product usually remove these shield and just cover the parts that are needed. Using excessive shielding initially gets the product on the shelf faster, moving to only necessary shielding later saves on production cost.

Kari, great vid once again! Even though at this point I knew you'd do the very best in getting this cleaned up, I'll admit I thought it wouldn't boot up. I used to work for an Apple repair shop and if we received a machine like that we charged a biohazard fee of $500. This was mostly to dissuade anyone from even checking the machine in for repair but I remember we received one iMac that had been stained yellow and smelled of cigarette smoke. When we opened it was one of the most disgusting things I had seen. I replaced the logicboard in it and I still can't believe the people paid for it.

For retrobrite I recommend the method Macho Nacho showed that used vapors from peroxide instead of submerging them.
And since it's winter and it's cold with little sunlight, use an oil radiator instead. So put the keycaps on a small plastic upside down box and place it on a bigger box (we are using the small box so the keycaps will be lifted). Pour peroxide (30vol% works great) on the big box all around the small box with the keycaps. Place a 2mm hardboard above the radiator (so it won't melt the plastic) and place the big box with everything in it and turn on the heat. In a day or two the keycaps will be like new. I used the same method on my Dreamcast.

Definitely retrobrighting and had I the capabilities, I would go for a full repair of that PSU, in order for the set to be complete. Nice job kiddo, brings back tons of memories.

Excellent work, Kari. The keyboard ribbon could potentially be fixed with a bodge. Some gentle scraping to expose copper either side of the hole and a small wire could do it.

Well, I watched the video all the way, I don't know what happened but at the end of it I remembered this is about the restauration of a computer :))) (jokes aside, well done)
