Hey everyone, this game contains fairly intense flashing lights and patterns, so if you have issues with photo-sensitivity maybe steer clear.
Also I just wanna link this song from the game's soundtrack because it's amazing: ruclips.net/video/ZwwunAYYZCA/видео.html

That Wii version especially is seriously visually impressive, not just for the time, but in general. If some low-budget or indie game came out today looking that good, I would probably still comment on the impressive visuals. Extremely impressive they pulled that off and plays well to the Wii's strengths.

This is definitely one of those games that looks like and should for all intensive purposes be shovelware (like many Wii games were) but ends up being absolutely amazing in many ways. It's one of those games that if you were in the know you definitely should have bought when it hit the bargain bin. For $3 or $4 (or the equivalent in pounds) you could have a heck of a good time.

YESS! Thank you so much for doing this set of games justice! I have been playing this game ever since it was released alongside the movie, and it is honestly my favorite videogame ever! The movie is also my favorite of all time, and both games capture the racing energy and feel that was in the movie perfectly! Whenever a game comes out that is based on another piece of media, it's very easy to say the games makes you "feel like you're in the universe of the movie/show/comic", but most of the time it's simply not true. ("feel like batman" lol) This game is the exception. I really feel entranced and apart of the film's universe when I play this game, it truly is a masterpiece of immersion and adaptation to the videogame format! For the Wii game, the visuals are absolutely incredible, and I find myself staring at the awe-inspiring location art and detail, along with the scale of the tracks and locations. They captured the movie-tracks in the videogame with a lot of precision, and I find myself squealing with glee when I drive around the same part that Speed drove in the movie, like the loops in Fuji! The audio side is another story, like you mentioned, the soundtrack is really great! The composer, Winifred Phillips, really blew my mind with the soundtrack. She had (and still has) tons of experience with making music for videogames, so it was no surprise the soundtrack was so good!
I want to mention a couple of things that I want to share for those who are curious. The PS2 version of the game features an extra track set in a fiery landscape called "Skorost", which also has it's own music and visual style. The PS2 version also has an extra racer, the monkey from the movie/show, Chim-Chim! Funny enough, he has the best car in the game stats-wise!
Recently, I spoke with the lead designer and producer for the game, and he said they were working on a PS3 version, but they had to cancel it shortly after the movie was released. He also mentioned that everything in the game was what they were aiming to add, so nothing was 'cut', except for the extra content that made it to the PS2 version. The reason why the DS and Wii versions of the game are so different is because they are made by completely different developers. I'm sure they probably communicated about some things, but it's very obvious each game was made by a different team during different times. Some of the cars have major differences, even from the movie, in the DS game!
Currently, the way I pay the game is through a Wii emulator on PC called Dolphin. The program allows you to run the game at higher resolutions beyond what the Wii ran the game at. At 1080p and above, the game looks absolutely stunning! Everything becomes clearer and the visibility brings a new life into the game. I suggest playing it through the emulator because the scale becomes even bigger and the game is more immersive.
Anyway, I could talk all day and night about Speed Racer: The Videogame! It's my favorite videogame ever, and I am so glad you made this video! Thank you!

In defence of the drifting physics in this game:
T-180s (the game's car type for those who aren't Speed Racer nuts) have 4 independent wheels and so can steer the car while its physically sideways, and in this game when you enter a spin, the car stops moving around the track, and starts moving along the track, with you in control of turning the car's angle. This makes sense because there's no real slip angle for a car that can steer itself when sideways.
Not to mention the fact that drifting has the risk/reward in that it has the practical purpose of keeping you on trajectory in corners, but slows you down, so you either have to boost, or use it when you're already going fast. This adds a reward for learning the boost timing, how long speed up panels last, and (for me) improved my driving experience in the game a lot.

There is in fact a LOT of cut content for this game, you can tell from the soundtracks. There was an entirely cut mode called "Rival Battle" and characters/tracks that were entirely cut from the Wii game, only implemented in the PS2 version, for example Sam Storm (character) and Skorost (track).
I believe this was because of the financial failure of the reboot movie itself, WB cut back the funding on this game and released it in an unfinished state, which is a shame because the game could have been so much more.

Alrighty so a little explanation with the drifting physics. So in the movie the cars in the stadium tracks are classified as a T-180. Meaning that they can turn all 4 wheels 180 degrees so when they pass by turns and or corners they can do so without losing speed thanks to the 180 degree of motion. This is why spinning out of control feels so strange compared to any other racing game out there. One catch though is that unlike the movie the “drifting” in this game does tend to slow you down (at least if your not in the middle of using a boost or speed up). Another neat thing about the cars designs when it comes to its drifting capabilities is that if you intentionally put yourself into a spinning/drifting situation, do so when a sharp turn comes up like in tracks like Thunderhead. This can really help you not fly all over the place and possibly turn your car over upside down. And while drifting/spinning you can use the D pad to move your car left or right. This is called strafing. Usually useful if an opponent hits you and your going out of control and a speed up is coming up so you can position yourself towards it that way you don’t lose speed. I’ve played this game for years and these techniques really help out. Also also barrel roll jumping is really useful in the parts of tracks that look like a tunnel. Since it’s in a cylinder shape it helps sort of not have too much air time and land immediately. Also helps dodge obstacles. This was unnecessarily long to type but I thought I’d let you know. Once you master these sort of I guess evasive non car fu techniques then I can guarantee you that 1st place spot every time!

I have this on PS2 and DS and I LOVE both, despite the limited number of game modes. Time Trial is actually useful for practicing tracks you have just unlocked before competing on them in Championship mode. And although the DS version had the battle mode, it’s not quite as fun for me. Though there are a few game modes I would LOVE to see if someone were to remaster this game using their own software. I would have wanted to have a harder race mode where all the cars have twice as much health, but respawning is disabled meaning any car that explodes is eliminated and drivers can be knocked out of the race, just like in the film. It would be an optional mode and you would toggle it on/off in the Options menu. I also would have liked to be able to set the number of laps for a race. The other big game mode I would have wanted would be a Last one driving battle mode where everyone goes all out car-fu on any course with infinite laps and they all take each other out until only 1 car is left. The last car remaining wins. This would be equivalent to the Death Race mode from F-Zero X on the n64.

This game is just way to good man, With all the time i put into the game even after comepleting everything that needed to be completed i still found myself comming back to experience the insane rush that i don't get from any other game. Personally as much as i love f-zero I don't even think that even came close to insane speeds that you can reach in this game.

Honestly if a concept like this came back in the format of an online competitive title, I could see it reaching esports with a bit more fleshing out.

    I had the ps2 version of this game as a kid. Me and my brother would be up all night playing it on the weekends, and hearing the soundtrack again made my cry ;w;
What I wouldn't do for a modern remake

I remember playing this game once on the PS2 Version and I loved it. One thing for sure is that it took me a bit to get used to the colors, since my eyes were asking myself if I was in some type of trippy drug

The constant risk reward calculation and lack of game modes in the console version reminds me of a lot of fighting games.

8:47 one thing to note with the drifting is how important it is in the Ps2 game compared to the Wii game, It made be the more freedom in moving your care around but drifting in the Ps2 game is necessary to turn on a lot of corners, but the thing is it also feels alot better compared to the wii, in which the ps2 you can go into and out of drifts comfortably and smoothly

i remember playing this when i was quite young, but i dont remember the combat or health system at all. its so weird because the game looks different from how i remember. it always made me feel uneasy when i was a kid for some reason too, maybe because of how insane the tracks are?
i also have a hot wheels gray ghost car on my desk to this day, the one from the movie/game. i used to always play him cause i thought he was the coolest character

Honestly if i had to name a game ive played for the longest amount of time itd be the ds version but as a kid i loved both and thought they were super impressive and unique games. Very well done for what the uninitiated would assume to be just shovel-ware
