The first race with Rex's ghost is actually so deep. I remember a reddit post of a man saying he used to play racing games with his dad when he was younger, they'd try to get the best lap time. About 15 years later, after his dad died, he stumbled upon that old console and loaded it up again. He launched a time trial session just like back in the days, and his dad's ghost, who was still holding their best time, appeared. Now a grown up, the man realized he could easily beat his dad lap time, but always decided to stop the run before the finish line to not overright the record, and keep his dad's ghost in the game. Speed wants his brother to remain in people's minds, as a great driver and a recordman. Beating his lap time would mean Rex would be forgotten forever. And on top of that, the rest of this whole first sequence tells us how important it is for the Racer family and Speed to keep Rex where he belongs, in the records rankings

There was a scene that I wrote in a story I'll never finish with this specific tone, but instead of the racer beating their family member's record, it's a family friend not trusting themself to break their best friend's father's record, resulting in said friend, fellow racer, and the record holder's son actually getting mad their trusted racer friend refused to break it(despite the fact the son could never bring himself to break it lol) and I never realized until recently when I rediscovered this movie, that I based it on this lol

I took an intro to film course in college and this was one of the few movies we watched where attendance was mandatory. I think the lesson was based on the use of color in film, but I remember the professor raving about this movie and how it was hated for no reason. It was always one of my favorites growing up. I'd watch it on long car rides with a portable DVD player and play the Wii game for hours on end. Underrated is an understatement for sure

The thing is if they did make this film suitable for mainstream audiences, it would've been a big disappointment to hardcore speed racer fans. The high-speed camera movements probably made average viewers sick to the point of ignoring everything happening in front of them. Maybe the CGI looked cheezy and different from what viewers are used to. But contextually, everything made sense. It's supposed to be a little cartoonish. I don't know what went wrong but maybe the average person didn't have any taste for this kind of movie. Perhaps it could have been less innovative with the vehicle design and do something more relatable. For example, putting rear-wheel steering on the Mach 6 was probably too innovative for the average person. Seeing the cars drift, but not actually drifting maybe looked confusing. I absolutely loved this movie though. It did everything so well.

When I next spoke to my wife on the phone, I suggested she see it before it left theaters. She saw it three times in the theater, and the next time we spoke, she immediately sang the theme song to me. When we reunited, we made a special trip to see it in IMAX for its final weekend in the next state over. We loved it so much that it inspired us to get a home theater system, complete with HD projector and Playstation 3 (for its blu-ray capabilities), specifically to watch the blu-ray of Speed Racer when it came out on a 100-inch movie screen. We bonded over loving this movie, and we still use the home theater setup (after moving twice) to this day.

High-budget teams like Mercedes and Red Bulls gets the top spot easily, and media-driven choices to gain fame for certain monopolies in order to...*survive*, and more or less, a slight chance of possibly manipulation. (I will not discuss Abu Dhabi 2021 no more).

Not to mention the Race monologue. He simply cannot understand Speed's passion for racing because his passion is a straight reversal. Royalton races to be the top for material gain and material control, and loves his job. Royalton isn't just the. Big Bad, he's Speed's foil and RIVAL for the duration of the film. The portag and antag just as passionate as each other in their own racing positions, but because of those positions, they'll never understand each other.
And obviously that represents and affects their moral standings at opposite ends of the spectrum too.

I was a kid, my dad loved the show, and I got to watch it as a kid. This movie was announced, and my dad took me to watch it. Then it happened in the final race! Speed flying to the top. Then it happened. I jumped out of my seat in the theater and yelled with all the might of a 12-year-old, GO SPEED RACER, GO! There was a big cheer and several people clapping, and a few other Speed Racers Go's!" I freaking love this movie. This movie was my everything! I loved that moment with my dad. This movie was everything to me for a while. I really wanted this movie to get a franchise.

To this day this is my favorite movie to just sit down and enjoy. I’m glad so many other people enjoy it as much as me. Watching the popping visuals being blended with live just captivated me, and the setting or usage never felt too out of place, and helped the film stand out even as a kid. The performances looking back were surprisingly great, with Emile Hirsch and especially John Goodman having some of the most telling facial expressions I’ve seen. And the racing. The Surprisingly good CGI, fluid cars and tracks, and especially the choreography on the races is still some of the best I’ve seen. It really feels like the cars are not vehicles so much extensions of their driver (an early movie theme). What I appreciate most as an adult is the soundtrack. I can’t not feel as Grand Ol’ Prix transitions to Reboot when speed powers up the Mach 6. It’s so good 🔥💗🙏

I try not to, but these days on re-watches, I get choked up at the very start--when he's "racing the ghost of Rex Racer." From the visualizing of the translucent image of Rex's car, to the reaction shots of Speed's parents contemplating the ramifications of Speed's victory, to Speed's last minute decision to pull back and honor his brother's record... I almost cry just thinking about it. And I'm a middle age man. And that's just the establishing act of the film.
    It's a good movie.

I went to see Iron Man, this unproven movie at the time and was floored by it. Then I went to see Speed in the theater and was blown away by how visually stunning it was. While everyone I knew in college was talking about Iron Man, I was trying to convince people to also go see Speed. It felt like I knew something no one else knew. Years later all the way until now, I've shown this off to anyone willing to watch and most of them agree that they wish they had seen it in theater. This movie was my childhood, man, and I completely forgot lol
My mom grew up with the original, but I grew up with both.
It also hits me the same way Whisper of the Heart does, trying to better yourself as an artist and the like. While I relate to Shizuku, I aspire to be as confident in my hobby as Speed(I never will be), and I just greatly like this version of Speed and Rex in general. Comparing racing to creating art also hits close to home, because what I do, gaming and painting models, isn't a typical thing people would consider to be art at all. I don't feel like I'll ever be a decent enpugh painter to actually SELL anything, but I always try to finish my projects to the end, regardless of whether everything's gone wrong with them.
This is also just artfully made, filmed, directed, choreographed(yes I'm comparing car-fu to dancing fite me), and an amazing modernization and love letter to the series, and I wish I could just have more of this movie. This movie feels and moves like an anime, and a comic. Perfect.
As a kid I was never waiting for the next Racing scene, because the entire movie was so energetic in its style that it never once lost my attention, even after countless rewatches that I forgot happened more than a Decade later. And now that I'm older, I can appreciate the clever writing and analytic dichotomy of Car Racing and Capitalistic racing too.
Just watching this movie, I can plainly see that the OG Speed Racer impacted the Wachowski sisters the same way THEIR Speed Racer impacted me, amd I think that's what hits best about this movie. You can feel the unending love, passion, and energy every person in the cast and crew put into it.
Spritle and Chim-Chim are also amazing, and were my grandad's favorite part of the movie lol
I always hated the children or funny characters as a kid because they always made me feel embarrassed for some reason. I was always embarrassed for liking cool things(probably cause I was bullied for it lol) but I adored their chaotic energy and I think Spritle's actor was f*cking MADE FOR THIS ROLE-

To this day, if somebody asks me what my favorite movie is, I tell them Speed Racer. And if I get a weird look in response, I make sure I get a chance to sit them down and give it a proper chance. As somebody who's almost exclusively driven by passion, the theme of Speed following his own passion hits me where few other things ever can, and seeing him put it all on the line for the sake of embracing his pure, untainted relationship to his passion, it brings me to tears just about every time. But the themes aside, it's also just an extremely impressive, fun movie. The characters are enjoyable, their relationships, especially the family ones, feel believable and compelling, the cars are just the right flavor of overdesigned, and the races are a dizzying visual feast that'll leave you needing to catch your breath by the end of it. I could go on and on about every little thing I love about this movie, but I sincerely would be here all day.

I firstly watched this Speed Racer movie around 2nd quarter of 2008 (I forgot the exact date that I watched, but I was 7 (8 in July) at that time). I haven’t seen the very beginning of this movie, but I saw the rest. I’ve been confused all the time on what is going on and I thought the racers were dead due to the bubbly thing. Fast forward to 2022, I also rewatched multiple times of this movie and now I understand a bit of the situation. Aside from watching Speed Racer movie, I do have my own Speed Racer toys like the Mach 5 from the original and 2 T180 cars that Racer X drove in the 2008 movie (all from the KFC order) and playing a HW Speed Racer online games (not related to the Wii games)
This childhood movie introduced me not only the SR franchise & the likes of the Mach 5 design (much prefer the 2008 design over the original design), but also the 3 cast of this movie; John Goodman (who was known to voice as “Autobot Hound” Transformers 4 & 5), Emile Hirsch (who played before as “Matthew Kidman” in “The Girl Next Door (2004) (I firstly watch the said movie in 2021 because I famillar him and his voice while watching a trailer or the movie itself), and I familiar Rain is because he was also featured in the Unilever Philippines’ shampoo commercial called “Clear” (released in the same year as Speed Racer).
Without the release of this Speed Racer in the Philippine cinemas, I would never know about the franchise and as well the 3 (or 2) cast in my life before I also search them in the internet or possible streaming.

Doubt you'll see this now, but here's a mildly infuriating story about this film and why it performed poorly (in my small town).
My school went to see Speed Racer as a field trip in our local theatre. My dad was one of the chaperones, because he liked the Matrix and wanted to see the Wachowski's newest film.
Halfway through the film when Spritle gives the finger to Royalton, our school guidance counselor made them stop the film and then gave a speech about how inappropriate it was and how outraged the faculty was, and how we all had to go back to school IMMEDIATELY.
So everyone got refunded their tickets and had to walk back to school because the bus driver wasn't scheduled to come for another hour or so.
However, since my dad was one of the volunteer chaperones, he said 'that is stupid, we're staying here' and just the two of us stayed to watch the rest of the film. He had a good laugh at the 'get that weak shit off my track!' line at the end, since everyone else had to leave before there was even a swear word said.
So that's why Speed Racer performed poorly in a terrible small town. Every child in it went to see it, then had their tickets refunded along with their parents being told it was FAR TOO INAPPROPRIATE for precious children to see.
