Growing up back when there were only 3 channels plus one Local UHF channel. Speed Racer was the afterschool cartoon everyone was watching on the Independent channel! right after Gilligan's Island and right before Star Trek
My mom wouldn't let us watch it because she thought it was too violent. So I had to go down the street to my friend Michael's house and watch it there. While we played with his new-fangled (for the US anyway) LEGO block thingies. FWIW, now I have a LEGO Mach V. I had the Racer X, Snake Oiler and a couple other cars from the live-action movie, but I gave them to my grand-nephew a couple of years ago.
I was born in 1969 and this was the first TV show I remember watching as a kid after Banana Splits and I thought and STILL KNOW Speed Racer was THE coolest kid around.
I remember being in love with the Mach 5 since the day I first seen it over 50 years ago. I built model cars but wondered why there was never a kit of it. I feared I was the only one that wanted or liked the car. I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I was to watch this. Doing donuts, on the track, in the garage and the helmet to top it all off. Thank you!!
Wow the only time I'd wake up early as a kid was to watch this show. Omg Speed Racer and Johnny Quest were the best cartoons ever to me. I truly miss those days as I turn 60 this Friday 😢
I loved watching Speed Racer back in the late 60s. Did you notice that one of the gadgets in the Mach 5 is being used today? The built-in hydraulic jacks are in the closed-body race cars that look about 2 inches off the ground. When it pulls into the pit, the jacks extend to let the crew change the tires, then retract when the job is done. Life imitating art. 🏎😎
I believed all the buttons worked, right up until Speed started sawing trees underwater and they fell over instead of floating to the surface. Then Land of the Lost came out and it was all about the Slestacks.
There have been 2 Speed Racers. The original Japanese version and the updated version. I have seen both of them. The Mach 5 was the most outrageous race car ever in anime. A car that can jump over obstacles, use saws to cut things, and could even be driven underwater. It was even copied into an evil version that could fly and even shoot lasers from a powerful cannon. Iconic car indeed.
The reboot version have upgraded version of the gadgets. The jump is improved that could jump over chasm, had a grappling hook, a drone, a shield, and off road mode. Also the enemy car can also floating in the air and transform into mecha. It's great.
Could you just imagine, driving your own Mach 5 to a car show. Hell yeah. You would have to most talked about car there. Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer Go.
My dad was very instrumental in teaching me about how cars work, and how to repair them. Speed Racer, Hot Wheels, etc were instrumental in making me a car guy as a kid. Thanks for sharing this. Been watching you since the Trucks days, and still do. Thank you!
Love that the mach 5 is now a reality but I think it's time they also made #9 the shooting star. The gold and black car driven by none other than Racer X, speed's older brother. To see both together would definitely be a real treat for sure. That was awesome to watch. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Wow, does this bring back memories. Racer X; "Melange still races"; the Mammoth Car; Spritle racing somewhere on the other side of the international date line; the Mach 5 in a demolition derby type match against another vehicle with similar 'weapons'; a temporarily blinded Speed driving his car while being given verbal instructions from Racer X (who claimed he couldn't drive because both his legs were broken); and the list goes on.
Who in the heck made me miss my childhood this morning. I'm now tearing up.. Man I loved that show. My mom used to tell me that I would run around the house singing GO SPEED RACER in my underwear and t-shirt on Saturdays in the1970s. Sir, you're right, I thought I was speed racer, WOW! What memories! # GO SPEED RACER GOOOO!😊
In the mid to late 60's cartoons were being censored or outright banned for too much violent content. Speed Racer was a must watch. I remembered being asked Q: "that being someone in their late teens why are watching that child's cartoon?" I remember saying A: "Because, It's the only cartoon left with violence in it. Q: "Well that's what 'they' are trying to get rid of"! Gotta Go John Wick's starting.
I was 7 years old when this cartoon was shown on YV in Latin America in 1967 and I watched it religiously. I bought the complete series on DVD when it became for sale while I worked part-time at Blockbuster Video (remember them?).
I noticed from watching all the cartoons. That when they had the car with the hood open it had an in-line engine in it. And when the car was on the lift you would see two big exhaust pipes coming out of the right side of the engine going from a two into one exhaust. 🤔
The old Nashville speedway..I grew up at that track. At one time it' was the world's highest banked racetrack & the world's fastest 5/8th mile track..( maybe only 5/8th mile track LOL) ..NASCAR had two races..The Nashville 420 / Music City 420 as I recall..I watch Darrel Waltrup ( blue & gold #17 Chevelle) cut his teeth at that speedway. I was 12 or 13 & Darrel & his wife Stevie were very nice.( unless he lost LOL ) .CooCoo Marlin, Red Farmer, Benny Puitt to Marty Robbins, you name them they raced there..Richard Petty finally refused to race there because of the high banks so they lowered them...But it was something to see & it was a very, very fast track for a couple of years..
Stacy, as a kid growing up in the 1960s, I remember watching Speed Racer on TV. This episode brings back memories! The tip about the Speed Dawg Shift Knobs was great too. I have a'92 Isuzu Rodeo in need of a shifter knob. Many thanks for the great content as always.

You gotta love that Mifune Motors sports car, it may take design cues from the Chaparral and Porsches of it's day but manages to be it's own thing too!
I watched the show as a kid. Hated most of the characters but fell in love with the Mach5. I read an article where it was made from a 79 Corvette. I have one. But it's out of my budget to make it a Mach 5 replica. I can dream though. lol Great video

I remember watching my first episode of Speed Racer at my friends house in 1967. I was 9 years old. He was lucky to have UHF channels where the cartoon played. We only had VHF channels so I could only watch it at his house. When it suddenly came on MTV, in 92” I was 34 and watched every episode. Good times.
Wow, I remember my two older brothers and I running (literally) home to watch it. I don't think we ever missed an episode. Everything about Speed Race is a part of the "soundtrack" of my life, one of the best parts. Thanks for the memories...
Was watching Speed Racer in the 70's as a child. Then in the 90's as a 20 something.... Loved it as a kid and adult. Had the HotWheels car and would race it on my hot wheels track..... Good times!
I was born in 1993 and remember renting the VHS tape of an episode when i was very young. Loved it and my old man enjoyed the show when he was a kid. So he went out and him and my grandpop bought me every single episode on VHS. It was an entire tote full. I was the happiest child in the world that day and for a very long time after. The fastest car on earth and Car with a brain were my favorite episodes. I got hit with two nostalgic moments with this one because i also remember watching what was then called "Power Block" almost every weekend in the early to mid 2000s. Man do i miss those days.
I've been watching Speed Racer since about 1974. Always wanted that car. :) One fun thing is learning that in the manga (and the classic models,) the Mach is supposed to have a V12 developed by Pops. If I had a replica - that's what it would have! If I only had a million dollars...
Go speed racer was my Favorite? Growing up ,could not wait to watch on tv!!! Trixie & chim chim ( what memories) He's busy reving up his powerful Mach 5👍 Yes go speed Racer❤
Born Feb 1980. I remember and appreciate this flash back very much. The content you brought takes me back to true science based, awesome American pride. Not going to say my ethnicity, but say I am a male, and only 2 genders, a sighned by something beyond or intelligence. What ever you call it. Thank you for the content and flash back, and sorry for the rant. Much love to you and all.😬 Also it's a modified Corvette, only 2.30 minutes in 😁
I watched Speed Racer since I was a kid, I was born January 1967. I would even take that round cardboard piece from the pizza boxes, would draw the buttons from the steering wheel on it and pretend I was driving the Mach 5. Amazing it was almost 60 years ago.
Back when I was a little kid we watched speed racer on the wee Willie Webber show out of Philadelphia it was on at 5:00 and if we got stuck too far away from home we would call our mother for my friend's house and tell her we'd be home as soon as the cartoon was over I'm 62
SoCal, West Covina... 70s... we had about 40 UHF channels and one of them would run Speed Racer marathons all the time. When I was about 8 I asked my dad why our 69 Nova SS had no interior or seats except the driver's seat and he told me to keep it light for racing. So when I saw the saw blades and the lift mechanism, all the Mach 5 stuff I called BS on it. My old man laughed and said "you're right, that car would fail inspection"
On a motorcycle ride through north Texas we stopped at a car collection in Nacona. The garage, belonging to a friend of a friend, was closed but looking through the window like a 5 year old, I saw the MACH 5! Life got in the way for a while and we didn't get to go back and visit for a few years, BUT when we did.... There it was! I was that 5 year old kid again looking at the Mach 5! It was roped off, so nobody could touch it. I relived my childhood again, seen it live and right in front of me! I don't know if it was the "REAL" Mach 5 or not and truly don't care. The museum has since been closed and all of the cars sold at auction, but I got my picture taken with the MACH 5!
I remember when this episode aired; wonderful to see it again!!!! I grew up on Speed Racer!! I got to see a clone/tribute car at the Petersen. That was so cool but a pale comparison to this one!!
Oh yeh, Speed Racer after school in 72’ hard to believe that was over 50 years ago. I really loved that show it seemed pretty grown up for anime’ and the Mammoth Car ? Scared the heck out of me 🐾✌️🇺🇸
Love Speed Racer. So many kids loved Racer X car. Shooting Star No#9. The Black Beauty- Green Hornet. Mystery Machine-Scooby Doo deserve honorable mention. My name is Skull Duggery. The Car Acrobatic Team were really something Huh! Thanks! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Growing up in the 90s while watching this on Cartoon Network was a gift. The live action was also on point, but can't tell why it bombed in the box office. I would love to own this car
I was an avid viewer of TV in this era and never heard of this until now! Oh! 1967 is the year I got my driver's license and my TV viewing dropped sharply.
I was born in the 90's and it was not the delorean, the batmobile, or initial D. It was actually speed racer mach 5! Incredible fantasy engieering. My dad had me watch it when I was young and I fell so hard in love. then the movie came out and boy I was shook! totally different style but it matched so perfectly. I am so upset they are not gona make another. It was the Mach 5 that got me into cars! 1967 baby, it is so iconic.
That was sooo cold hearted! All that interference while showing the engine. Could've been a four cylinder for all we knew. Otherwise you'd be proud to show it. Like you can see how an engine works just by seeing it in the car. Still, I'm a Speed Racer fan, grew up on it. Coolest car ever.
I think the concentration and duration of the wheel oscillating at 4:21 woke me to the realities of mechanics. I find the cartoon's presentation of that purposeful and and elementarily educational. I now can understand concepts of the stillness of the body (inertia), spring rate, dampening and forcing function of the road.

Bunta smoking his cigarette just shrugs
Most famous race car in Anime sure.
akuma zeto and akio may also have something to say here , i am shocked how few people seem to have picked up on this reference
I've been watching Speed Racer since about 1974. Always wanted that car. :) One fun thing is learning that in the manga (and the classic models,) the Mach is supposed to have a V12 developed by Pops. If I had a replica - that's what it would have! If I only had a million dollars...
Exactly… in reality, at the time, the engine would’ve based on old Ferrari, Bertone, or Lamborghini Miura and Countach v12 DNA
The soundtrack and the incidental music of Speed Racer was a-ma-zing, and the rock and roll intro version a beatiful thing...!!
327 v-8, mid mounted 4 speed manual. Beautiful car.
Wow 😳. Wow 😳. Wow that's awesome. I still watch that show my favorite. Show
Back when I was a little kid we watched speed racer on the wee Willie Webber show out of Philadelphia it was on at 5:00 and if we got stuck too far away from home we would call our mother for my friend's house and tell her we'd be home as soon as the cartoon was over I'm 62
God, I loved this cartoon when I was a kid. And the car, I only wished it was real. 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
I remember watching it in 68-69?, maybe it was my favorite, watched it before my mother took me to nursery school!, to this day I'm in love with cars!
I can honestly say that in the 1960s, Speed Racer was my introduction and sparked my interest in cool cars. 😊
Nice vid, Stacey! Been watching you for 17 years now! You kick ass!!
Wow, this took me back to the 70's watching speed racer as soon as I got home from school. Highlight of my day.
there was nothing the Mach 5 couldnt do.... except get the driver to talk to trixie
One of my favorite cartoon to watch as a child❤❤. Pontiac Grand Prix looks like the mach 5.
OMG! My Childhood Hero LOL Amazing!!!
Oh, I remember watching the show Speed Racer. And I enjoyed it. I have the movie "Speed Racer". I'm from the 70's I grew up in that decade.
Loved this show as a kid, I would definitely drive this on the Daily!!! 🥹
I love it! I remember watching "Speed Racer: the next generation" on DVD.
Spridel and Chim Chim proved that CANDY WAS THE GATEWAY TO METH!!!
I remember when this episode aired; wonderful to see it again!!!! I grew up on Speed Racer!! I got to see a clone/tribute car at the Petersen. That was so cool but a pale comparison to this one!!
Same here Rob!
As a kid i had these two brothers who watched this show religiously so I'll watched and liked it almost bought the dvd series.
Great video. Love that cartoon.
Oh yeh, Speed Racer after school in 72’ hard to believe that was over 50 years ago. I really loved that show it seemed pretty grown up for anime’ and the Mammoth Car ? Scared the heck out of me 🐾✌️🇺🇸
This is so awesome, my favorite car ever ❤😮 that's why I love cars and races
I remember speed racer and I was amazed by it. Especially thr drone bird that came out the hood to scan up ahead.
Watched it religiously Dana Crosby sixty four years old Thank you for the memory
I was an avid viewer of TV in this era and never heard of this until now! Oh! 1967 is the year I got my driver's license and my TV viewing dropped sharply.
very kewl..super fine video my life is better for having seen the real thing finally...Thank you for this video
Glad you liked it!
THIS VIDEO MADE ME A NEW SUBSCRIBER 🙂
I use to go to school and get home and turn on speed racer. That was back in 74. Oh i love that cartoon 😊
Peter Fernandez ...LEGEND. RIP
One of the all time favs.
