Back when I was growing up in Pasadena, CA back in the 1960s, we used to drive over to Hollywood at night and stand at the large showroom windows at the Barris shop checking out his latest creations (the cars were rotated out with other cars regularly). Some of the stuff we saw was amazing, including the Monkee Mobile. 🙊
I worked with my father at Barris Kustom starting in 1973 and the Monkeey mobile was there. I was pretty stunned to find out the Super Charger was fake. When you raised the hood the Super Charger was attached to it and I pretty stunned by that. I could be wrong but I think I recall being told the original did have a working Super Charger. Some years later I met Micky Dolenz at a hang gliding contest in Sylmar, CA. I was standing at the bottom of the mountain near where they were landing and away from the crowd of spectators and Micky walked over and started talking to me. He hung out with me for quite awhile there. He was "Celebrity Guest" and paid to be there. I don't recall much of what we talked about but we both agreed those hang gliders were freaking crazy!
Very cool, and yeah as I mentioned in the video, initially the engines were fitted with functional superchargers indeed, but the actors couldn't handle that kind power, so they switched it back to the stock setup normally asperated tri-power with the a prop blower instead.

@@CarStarz42 they've recently started a restoration on the car believe, it's owned or was by the carguy who collected the weird 50's and 60's fibre glass cars.
One of the specifications was that the car would be able to pull a wheel-stand (pop a wheelie) For the show's theme. So the rear axle was welded directly to the frame on one car. That's what made the car un-drivable. Simply having a supercharged engine would not make the car un-drivable. And they were never able to get a good shot of the wheelie so the idea was abandoned.
I used to watch the Monkees avidly after school. And I longed for more footage of the Monkeemobile every night.I've got a signed photo of the Monkees from their Australian tour and be damned if I can find it.

@CarStarz42 you got that right! The only real talent was Michael Nesmith, who was a pioneer of music videos before MTV, and he later produced the cult movie Repo Man (1984), love that movie!
In 1987 I worked for a shop in Pontiac called Rush collision. The owner named Bob said that when he was young he worked on a Monkee mobile body as a prototype. It would make sense that he had something to do with it since he was from Pontiac. In 87 I repaired a sunbird prototype that was fixed and sold after the repair. So I know that these things went on up there.

Re-watching old reruns, I did noticed the first season they did not have the logo on the car.
I saw the Monkee Mobile in Mineola, LI NY. There was a garage there associated with Barris that had a: Batmobile, James Bond 007, Mach 5, Munsters Coffin Dragster, a Herbie, the longest Limo in the world and a bunch of others packed into a small garage on a side street. I forgot the name of the place, but it has since been closed.
In about 1992 my ex and I went to a show in Los Vegas called "Enter the Night". It had a family of wildly entertaining orangutans including Clyde from the Clint Eastwood films. They came on stage in what was purported to be the original Monkeymobile
I’m probably wrong, but I thought that one of the cars used to be turned into a Monkeymobile was on another TV show. It was the husband’s car in I dream of Jeannie and I think it was gold.
What you're probably thinking of there is that there is some incorrect info out there that some people thought that, but no; the GTOs they converted came directly from Pontiac to Jefferies's shop and that I'm sure of 😉👍

😊 This was really nice 🙂👍. Totally cool. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you 😊 for posting this. I actually have an original Monkees model from 1967. It's a little beat up, but I still treasure it. 7/30/24.
Glad you enjoyed it and that's cool 😉👍
Love the video of the Monkeemobile, but the torque based humor was spot on perfectly done, good to go with that statement though for sure.
Lol, glad you liked that. I never know if folks like my rather dry jokes until someone lets me know. Thanks 😉👍
@@CarStarz42 no worries and it was done at the right time plus you're welcome.
@@claytonthomas1980 😉👍
@@CarStarz42 👍👍💕💕.
Fantastic overview. I grew up with the Monkeemobile as a kid. I saw it only once on display.
Thanks and cool 😉👍
@@CarStarz42 One thing that stood out was the "bright red" color of the MM, was like Barris used the same paint to stripe the "66 Batmobile" (I saw that upclose as well). I remember it really stood out.
@@texasranger7262 Bright indeed! 😉
thank you
You're very welcome and glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
I saw, and photographed a replica in a car cruise in New Smyrna Beach FL a few years back. Amazing vehicle to be standing next to for sure.
Nice 😉👍
THANK GOD your channel is back!!!
Thanks much, I'm very glad to be back and glad you enjoy the channel 😉👍
I love these videos
Glad to hear that friend! 😉👍
Very interesting fact about a hotel owning it. I never heard that story before.🤔
Yeah, it was news to me too. Makes me think the car was just flat out stolen or something with that kind of crazy situation.
It was indeed factual. It was covered by all the "Pontiac" mags of the time. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. 🙂
Thank you!
You're very welcome and glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
This was really informative!! I'd always knew that Jeffries was the actual creator. I didn't know that Barris was ever involved. And the part about the hotel really blew my mind! The thought it crossed the auction block at that reasonable price was also amazing! Thanks for a great video!!👍👏👏
You're very welcome and glad you enjoyed and learned from it as well 😉👍
I love his AC Cobra haulier that was a USA version of the Mercedes Hyper Hauler of the 50's.
😉👍
@@CarStarz42 they've recently started a restoration on the car believe, it's owned or was by the carguy who collected the weird 50's and 60's fibre glass cars.
One of the specifications was that the car would be able to pull a wheel-stand (pop a wheelie) For the show's theme. So the rear axle was welded directly to the frame on one car. That's what made the car un-drivable. Simply having a supercharged engine would not make the car un-drivable. And they were never able to get a good shot of the wheelie so the idea was abandoned.
😉
Hi again
This car always looked so funky and funny to me
Howdy, it's an acquired taste of a design for sure 😉
Ok hi it's me im an idiot and forgot my password

Cool video!
Glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
I used to watch the Monkees avidly after school. And I longed for more footage of the Monkeemobile every night.I've got a signed photo of the Monkees from their Australian tour and be damned if I can find it.
😉👍
Great episode!! Next to the Knight Rider car this is my favorite tv car!!!😎👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
That Kellogg's drag chute probably paid for the initial builds.
Lol, probably so. 😉
I noticed as a kid that the Monkeymobile was rarely on the show. Might have been shooting on location costs? Another great episode, thanks!
Hard telling, but yeah I get it; all the teenage girls fueling the bizarre "Monkees craze" back then couldn't care less about the car, but for guys anyways, the car was really the only halfway cool thing about that odd show, lol.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed the video 😉👍
@CarStarz42 you got that right! The only real talent was Michael Nesmith, who was a pioneer of music videos before MTV, and he later produced the cult movie Repo Man (1984), love that movie!
Great vid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks much buddy, glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
In 1987 I worked for a shop in Pontiac called Rush collision. The owner named Bob said that when he was young he worked on a Monkee mobile body as a prototype. It would make sense that he had something to do with it since he was from Pontiac. In 87 I repaired a sunbird prototype that was fixed and sold after the repair. So I know that these things went on up there.
Cool 😉👍
I always thought the Monkee Mobile was orange! On TV it showed up like that and I never once thought it was red.
Yeah, warm colors were certainly hard to tell apart on old TV sets in particular 😉
Great content my brother!!!!~~
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
I like the way they can customise the car and it is safe to drive on the road
Not sure how "safe" it was, but sure 😉
I have pics of this car from the World of Wheel car show in the mid 80's, along with the General Lee, The original Batmobile, and the Muster Coach.
Nice 😉👍
The one with the tan top used to be at Star Cars in Gatlinburg TN. where I got to sit in it. Pretty cool.
Cool, yeah I think it did bounce around some museums for awhile too, possibly even at the Petersen Museum for a bit, but I think that was just for a short a event though 😉
I was a HUGE Fan of the band, and the show...
And I even HAD a GTO as my FIRST CAR!! {BTW -- I bought my own first car and paid CASH!}
My Brother and I built well over 100 model cars, in great detail... even painting the door handles and dash.
Of course, that was more than 50 years ago, and I have no idea what has happened to that model, since I went into the Marines in 1971...
Cool 😉👍
Peter Tork couldn't handle the torque 😂
😉
Yeah thats what the guy said got to wake up pretty early to fool you
I remember a Fonzie Mobile Model. It was the same car. But had Fonzie on the side.
Pretty much 😉
Rip the monkees
Most of them anyways.
❤ I THINK THAT JUST ABOUT EVERYBODY THAT WATCHED THE SHOW WHEN IT CAME OUT WANTED THE MONKEEMOBILE❤
😉👍
WOW ! What marvelous car ! I love it ! I want ! I need you !😂 In 90's i found one in little scale with the four singers inside.Original from 60's ( HOT WHEELS i supposed) This is it. A big hug from BRAZIL ( SOUTH AMERICA) Bye.

'Hey guys, let's go to the beach in our monkeemoblie.' all right my friend this is one t.v. car i had no clue as to what kind of model this was based on but gto badge got my attention immediately so now the next thing to surprise me was that one of them ended up in puerto rico ( if anyone can help you out on this mystery it columbo 😂) anyway thanks carstarz for today's video on monkeemoblie and have a good weekend bye now.
Lol, indeed and yes Columbo's Peugeot is still on my very long to do list as well. Glad you enjoyed the video 😉👍
@CarStarz42 you too, carstarz 🫡.
Hey Harry, they got The Monkees. They were a major influence on The Beatles. 😆😆😆
Lol 😉
Cool. Thanks
You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
At the end of your video you’re talking about the collectibles, I have a Monkeemobile still in a box that was an “Auto world exclusive” Monkeemobile from the first season, where the monkees logo was not on the doors. Re-watching old reruns, I did noticed the first season they did not have the logo on the car.
Cool 😉👍
I saw the Monkee Mobile in Mineola, LI NY.
There was a garage there associated with Barris that had a: Batmobile, James Bond 007, Mach 5, Munsters Coffin Dragster, a Herbie, the longest Limo in the world and a bunch of others packed into a small garage on a side street. I forgot the name of the place, but it has since been closed.
Cool 😉👍
In about 1992 my ex and I went to a show in Los Vegas called "Enter the Night". It had a family of wildly entertaining orangutans including Clyde from the Clint Eastwood films. They came on stage in what was purported to be the original Monkeymobile
Sounds interesting indeed 😉👍
Those original cars were a testament to the American dream 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏
😉👍
I’m probably wrong, but I thought that one of the cars used to be turned into a Monkeymobile was on another TV show. It was the husband’s car in I dream of Jeannie and I think it was gold.
What you're probably thinking of there is that there is some incorrect info out there that some people thought that, but no; the GTOs they converted came directly from Pontiac to Jefferies's shop and that I'm sure of 😉👍
@@CarStarz42 thanks for the clarification, keep up the good work! I love your videos

I guess as far as the dude updating his original, it's kinda like seeing a sweet antique radio and realizing it's just a cd player. Oh well, it's his . Dig the vid
Well, it was Barris that made the mods before he had it, but yeah each to their own indeed.
Saw the Monkeemobile and the Batmobile in the window of the Barris shiop years ago,,(and just the shadow of the Munster koach in the back area)
Cool, yeah that shop was quite a sight back then for sure 😉👍
I was sooo close to the Batmobile,, other side of the glass

I remember in the 70's a Mexico hotel had a pink and white theme. It even had pink jeeps with pink and white striped tonneau covers for guest use. I believe it was the Las Brisas in Acapulco. But I don't know if any owner ever went through bankruptcy. I'm sure the hotel has had several owners through the years..
Yeah, must be different place as this situation was in Puerto Rico, could have been a chain though I suppose; hard telling.

@@melg2253 not on the one I had. The model was molded in white plastic, It wasn't red. I used the roof on my Monkeemobile, it looked the same to me...just white.
In the mid 70s a guy in Rockaway Beach NY owned one of the Monkeemobiles. I used to see him driving it around, and often saw it parked in his driveway. He didn't have it that long though, he didn't have a garage and it's not exactly a car you can park outside long term.

Lots of different viewpoints on that indeed, but yeah; it was his car to do what he wanted with at the time indeed.
