    Stacey,
    About 6 or 7 years ago the City of Hot Springs Arkansas had a equipment auction. In the auction was a 96 F250 / 5.0 automatic;
    the bench seat was trashed,
    the wrong battery, a tailgate that wouldn't unlatch and a bad set of wipers. The up side was only 132,000 miles and 4 brand new Firestone 10 ply and a receiver hitch.
    Also it was only used in their park system; basically no highway miles or heavy towing. The auction hardly on bidders; I got it for $1,075 ! A STEAL!!!
    Anyway back to fuel mileage. The old girl was squeaking out about 9+ mpg; talked to SUMMIT RACING TECHs about ditching the viscous fan for electric fan and put on under drive pulleys and they said there would be no benefit!?!?
    I did it anyway and my mileage went from 9+ to 12+ but g the experts said I would see no BENEFIT!?!?
    The other tweek was switching oils. The service manager for Hot Springs said they use Texaco 10W30.I switched to Rotella Synthetic 5W40 ; on a tank of gas before I would average 230 miles after switching to Rotella I now average 275 miles.

    OMG!! Cash for Clunkers that's a phrase I haven't heard in in a long time(thankfully). What a nightmare time that was. It was during the early part of the recession and things were getting bad. No one was buying new cars so that meant car companies with all the 1000s of managers weren't getting their bonuses. So car manufacturers cried to Uncle Sam about needing money for a bailout. So, we the people get screwed because we got to finance that. Plus we got good used cars taken away from us forcing us to go out and buy new cars all the while about 60% of Americans lost their jobs, homes and retirement (401k)
    Sad times for sure.
    On a side note I'm a Ford guy and have been since I was 9or10yo. But after the bailouts I definitely am one. Ford didn't take any money from the government and all the money that GM/Chevrolet took about 85-90% was used for upper management bonuses. I'll never buy a GM product.
    I used to tell a friend of mine back then that bought a new Chevy truck me and everyone else at our company was helping him pay for it

    It was a flop but they got what they wanted. Less for us and more for them. Forcing people to buy new stuff and or vehicles. Working man's point of view. Oh and drive 55 mph, that'll save you a lot more fuel.

    I think it was a waste of time and money to destroy the engines, transmissions and eventually the cars because others could use them, this country is so into recycling and they destroy good running vehicles
