my favorite 4 wheeler was a 84 grand wagoneer. I love how balanced the ride is, the shorter than typical wheelbase for full size rigs. it was a total pleasure to drive until the vacuum system went out switching the 4wd from the console. I wish I kept that rig. But time moves on. I've had 3 monteros since then and while the montero is a worthy off roader, I really loved the wagoneer body style and ride the most.

Also Uber rare as it is properly converted to RHD, instead of the chain drive conversion almost all the UK FSJ's had. Aluminum bumpers, not the nasty chrome plated steel bumpers.

    • @AtomicReverend
      @AtomicReverend 4 года назад +2

@@farmsgrace341 CA as in California is what I assume he meant not Canada and if so I can say as a guy that has lived in California his whole life I can tell you 100% that 1976nd newer vehicles are smogged here. So called "conservative" (AKA RINO) Arnold Schwarzenegger signed in a bill to stop the rolling 30 year smog exemption because he was afraid of global warming or some liberal crap fest that somehow a collector car effects in a large way. (The hypocrisy wasn't lost on me as meanwhile the guy has private airplanes a daily drives giant vehicles like Hummer h1's and yet a car collector is causing the emission problems).
So yes in short California has stringent smog laws smogging cars that are now 45 model years old. They go on a dyno for smog and their fuel system is pressurized to check for vapor leaks and underneath the hood all the stock emission crap has to be there and in working order regardless if there something better like for example fuel injection. The only exemptions or if it has a "CARB EO" number (California air resource board exemption order) that cost a ton for a manufacturer to get on their aftermarket part for a small market but I digress.
The other way around it is a smog "referee" that is state certified that can issue (after approximately a 2 year waiting period sometimes longer) a exemption for a car that has a later year drive train swapped into it which includes all smog stuff. So for example if you want to LS swap an old 79 malibu you would need the entire donor vehicle for not only its engine but computer, fuel system, catalytic converters exc...
There has been a push recently to get the smog law moved up to 1983 but it has stalled out and are liberal controlled state legislature.
I really need to move out of this hostile state for more then this reason but I digress.

I'd love to find a 1978 or 1979 Cherokee Chief like that again someday. I had one when I was 16 and never got it back on the road.

The shop left the show because the producers wanted to add the drama like the other shows. When employees started leaving for other shops, the owner said it was enough. The show was ruining the shop and his reputation. That's why the shop isn't on any shows. You can follow the shop on RUclips if you still want to see some of the guys that stayed.

You really ought to pull this video as your idea of cheap is completely unrealistic and I feel you are out of your mind to take on something this involved - in other words you have no idea whatsoever what you're luring people into in the way of an expensive project. Here in California, you'd never get a $1500, 150,000 mile Jeep vehicle with a 360 to smog certify even with dual catalytic converters. You might drive around Los Angeles sometime and see how many of these are on the road i.e. zero....An aged Quadratrac is nothing but very costly headaches which is why most people dropped the entire drivetrain for running gear out of a '79 3/4 ton Chevy Pickup, and that means EVERYTHING - 350 Engine, Turbo 400, 205 Transfer Case, Dana 44 Part Time Front Axle and 14 Bolt Corporate Rear. Then hope to God it would satisfy the Emission Referees due Carbureted Engines just don't have the capability to run clean enough anymore. Once you get that far you then you dump the 350 and go to the Chevy 6.0 with the 4L80-E Trans. Realistically, your "$1500" investment easily turns into a $25,000-$30,000 complete rearrangearectomy and with Gasoline at $3.50-$4.00 a gallon, you're filling the Tank up (20 x $4.00 = $160) every 4-5 days, guys, it's just not worth it. Oh...and you forgot about Air Conditioning which would require converting to R-134-A (remember R-12 isn't available anymore) which would mean replacing just about every component in that system. Money Pit doesn't even begin to describe this as just about anything AMC or Chrysler built turns into something more expensive than a Boat to own. And to top it off, then you have to deal with all the AMC Body hardware that after 45 years is literally falling off the truck by this time one would think they'd need to start seeing a Therapist. Due you don't have to deal with emission issues a pre-1975 vehicle would be a much better idea but due to the fuel consumption it's still way to costly to drive. Frankly, just about any 4Runner or Tacoma would be a FAR better investment and still get twice the fuel economy of a Jeep. I have 425,000 miles on my 2004 Tacoma and it still runs great, everything still works AND it still emission certifies. Yes, I've put some money into it over the years but nothing like what it would cost to rebuild a Jeep vehicle from the ground up.

What would a reasonable price be for a 79 Cherokee Golden Eagle that has recently had $27K worth of work on the mechanical and electrical side, incuding a rebuilt AMC 360, but just has decent paint with patina and needs reapolstering and headliner? Is $10K too much?

Why pick the SJs, which you cannot find in the shape of yours for just $1500, clean, working examples are at least in the 10k and up range due to growing interest in the grandaddy of luxury SUV's. XJs are more plentiful and cheaper, as well as ZJs, WJs, and WKs, are all well under that amount.

I can see the owners of these jeeps raising up the prices just listening to this guy. This must have been recorded some years ago or he lives in a very special place to get something drivable like that for that price. You actually can't find those around here cheap. Heck you cant find a jeep cj for under $9000 everyone thinks they own gold. Trouble is most off roads I've been in or more for smaller jeeps and such the bigger jeeps and such can navigate them but some areas are very tight. But the 4 wheel market for the cheap beaters isn't going to stay cheap with CJ's going for $9000 plus, broncos and the like starting to creep into the $20,000 area with people buying up all the wrecks and redoing them to sell them for "investment" purposes. There is a video right now on youtube where the guys telling people they should be purchasing Jeep YJ for investment purposes. The sad thing is Jeeps weren't that great I owned a cj and worked on it more than any other vehicle I owned. That and it's 10-12 miles per gallon . Tops leak unless you can find you a hard one even those have problems.

Releasing this from the 90's as new content..? But you will not find any of this content to be correct in 2020. Keep in mind that I'd be curious as to how 28" tires to 35" tires without a gear change and this won't change the speedometer? $1,500 not rotted out from where for an SJ these days? Thumbs down, though I love SJ's.

We have a grand wagoneer. We removed the engine and slipped in a 331hemi. Gm 700r4 and Gm transfer case. Hodge podge configuration but it works. Rebuilt the axles. 31 spline and 355 gears. Gas mileage went to 24mpg at 70mph with the a/c on. Beats the heck out of 10mpg.

This old, so not relevant today in pricing. Skipped over all the expensive stuff like all of the oil leaks. Nothing mentioned about the transmission or possible engine rebuild and he never showed how he matched the paint he ground off on tge front grille. We never heard it run though commenting at 17:39. Maybe this is a nice upgrade if you plan on pushing it around or having it hitched to a team of wagons.

These gems are out there, you just gotta go look for them.
I buy nice vehicles all the time dirt cheap.
You'd be amazed atwhat I paid for 2 rust free cars that I drove home.
A Grand Prix & Jetta Turbo.
Paid less than the guy did for this jeep for both.
Thats how many of us make a living with these cars.
