Ah but Speed isn't just a character. Peter is Speed. Not only did he do the voice of Speed but he wrote the scripts. He gave the show life. That's why people call him Speed because he is.
@@SonicPAJ It was. Unfortunately Peter died early on in season 2, so his characters were recast. I still love Next Generation though, imo it's a proper Speed Racer Sequel.

Sorry to read in the postings that he's left us. He was a great director and voice and a really nice guy.

Speed Racer is going to continue to be shown and remembered by many, many fans while a lot of newer and more recently dubbed anime series are going to be forgotten. I think Mr. Fernandez is right... The technique for dubbing anime today is VERY flawed. We're not getting very many memorable vocal performances as a consequence of this mechanization. (Admission of bias -- I watch VERY LITTLE anime with the English dubs. I generally listen to the Japanese audio and read subs. There's a very few series where I actually like or prefer the English dub. That has a lot to do with the casting and performances like any other form of filmmaking.) Also, I think there is a tendency towards during overly literal scripting that satisfies a small percentage of fans but ultimately leaves everybody else cold. Right now, as I write this, Speed Racer is longer licensed by any company in the US. The rights reverted back to Tatsunoko Productions after a lawsuit with the previous US rights holder who continued to try to market the series after their 10-year contract ended. It's only a matter of time before another company picks up the rights to Speed Racer and the series gets re-released on home video in the US. Hopefully, if it needs any restoration it will get it at this point in time with the available film and audio materials.
I recently rewatched an episode I hadn't seen since a kid called The Most Dangerous Race. I had forgotten how deadly Speed Racer episodes were. No wonder it had such an emotional impact on me as a kid. Great characters, great stories though.

I was three or four when I first saw this show in 68 or 69. I was memorized, and the Mach 5 is what kicked off a lifetimes love of all things cars from then on. It still stirs the glitter when you see that Mach 5 do something amazing with Speed at the wheel.
I once talked to a woman who was probably in her 50s or 60s and she said that as a child she had named her bike the Mach 5 and we started to sing the theme song together ❤ I also the best character name is Ivanna Von Vondervon.
