Why Speed Racer is Still PRETTY GOOD!

- You know that old Speed Racer Japanimation your parents mention from time to time?
Why is it so memorable?
Fifty Years Later, we GO, GO, GO into a brief history of this influential series and what it did to stand out from other shows at the time.
"GO, SPEED RACER GO!"
Speaking of 50 years, I just wanted to say that the live action film turns 10 today.
And it's one of my favorite movies of all time.
Highly under-rated!
SonicPAJ It's also my very favorite, I'm even building the tracks and cars in ROBLOX.
RedL try building them in gta
Don’t make me feel old. 😁
AGREED it got plowed by Iron Man it’s opening weekend but I saw it opening night 🤘💜🤘😎 ‘twas a beautifully intense thing indeed!
He’s going off the cliff. DAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!?!?!
"He's gone over a cliff!"
*DEMON NOISE*
*splash*
I am only 18, this show is way beyond my lifetime. As a kid and even today I still watch it. I have seen every episode all 52 and I must say it still holds up as one of my favorites against all modern Japanese and American shows. Also that 2008 movie is good to bad people didn't watch it XD
I'm glad to see there are hardcore Speed Racer fans out there.
My uncle had VHS recordings of it. He used to lend them to me as a Kid. He also had Voltron. This stuff was amazing.
Same thing happened with REDLINE which released back in 2009. It’s a very good anime, similar to speed racer in a way.
@@TokyoxKitsune lmao funny you should mention that I also own the DvD of that in both English and Japanese thought tbh Redline English is better imo
Ruffenღ I agree. The English DUB for REDLINE is amazing. I own it on blu-Ray, it’s sooo pretty and colorful.
Yes it is. No one has ever been able to channel the pure INSANITY of this series. The English dub actually ADDS to the insanity.
Aside from the Wachowski's with their movie... you're right. There is an insane franticness to Speed Racer and without that it would lose its identity.
Peter Fernandez is such a humble terrific guy. He’s seen as Speed Racer because the character in Peter naturally comes out to reflect Speed.
This show needs to come back soon or it will disappear into obscurity
Honestly I wouldn't mind a remastered graphics redubbed version of the original series.
@@megaman37456 insert shut up and take my money meme here
@@megaman37456 i would like to have them add the next generation series as well
Careful what you wish for! In present politics they would make Racer X gay, Speedy a push over soyboy, their father a terrible role model, and Tracy a blood thirsty feminist if not become the star of the show.
I'd love to see a proper reboot series (by a good anime studio, not like the CG one from the 2000s).
Speed Racer: *commits criminal
activities*
Ah, this show never gets old...
It's only criminal activities since we're not in the 60. ;)
Accomplishing your goal is more important than someone else's feelings.
The animation couldn’t be more dated and the script tends to be a bit questionable at times. But the stories a phenomenal and the characters are all so lovable
Yeah, but as one of the earliest dub-scripts there is a charm to how much info they tried to say in one breath.
My heart grew three sizes hearing Peter Fernandez talk about Speed Racer... genuinely tearing up right now.
Speed Racer was my damn childhood. I hope someday it regains traction in America.
Hobby
Traction! There’s a steering wheel button for that! 😃
It's all in Tatsunoko's hands now.
RIP Peter Fernandez, mans made a 16 year old me love this show when I was 5
I'm rewatching this show again. No matter what age I am, I always enjoy it. It's timeless!
I remember my dad would show me the old speed racer we had the dvd set. I had no idea it was underrated I thought everyone knew what it was lol. I also didn't realize it was an anime.
A lot less people know about it this generation aside from the memes and since Tatsunoko took back all the rights only they can make new material. There was a resurgence in the 90s due to MTV and Cartoon Network airing reruns as well as Speed Racer X but after the movie and after "The Next Generation" season 1 ended, there wasn't much to bring back the series.
And yeah, I had a lot of friends in an anime club in high school who had no idea it was an anime. Though back then, I think it was called "Japanimation".
@@SonicPAJ that's cool you learn something new every day lol
Looped backgrounds were common in most 1960s cartoons, and they were used to save money
Trust me... I know.
The crashed cars always explode and burn.
Thank you for adding the Peter Hernandez interview at the end that was so wholesome. Wish I could've met the guy.
I once watched this episode without sound and I remember everybody tossing around a pineapple and aggressively trying to take the pineapple from one another and at the end some dudes were aggressively eating wheelbarrows full of pineapples
It sounds like a weird trip but honestly it’s real
That episode is one of the best... takes place later in the series.
Yeah the show is real trippy
The Mach 5 is cool looking car, nothing else looks like it.
Poster might have incorporated a few of the "censored" scenes (excised from the orig. Japanese anime for either content or run time) -- featuring excessive violence, Trixie in the ofuro (bath), characters getting drunk, etc. Also, the reason the characters talk so fast is that in Japanese, it usually takes many more syllables to say something than in English -- their words are simply much shorter and thus (typically) there are many, many more of them per utterance. Fernandez had to "fill" the resulting long periods of lip movement by the Japanese-speaking characters with lots of English dialogue, sped up to get the beginning and the end of the phrase being spoken to match the beginning and end of the Japanese utterance. Conversely, there are many instances where SR characters simply grunt, growl, or react in surprise for a few seconds ("Whaaaaaa?!" "Ohhhhh!"), which seems to English speakers unnaturally long. In Japanese, such inarticulate sounds carry real meaning -- much more than we ascribe to them; almost as if they were part of a performance.
Dexter Laboratory did a great parody of Speed Racer especially with the fast dialog that is mentioned here.
The cliff clip made me howl omg it was perfect
Speed Racer was actually my first anime. I don't know how I got into it, but I believe it had something to do with my love of Hot Wheels. When I went to see the movie, I was floored and LOVED the movie. I still think the movie is pretty good and is a great adaptation. Sometime between the 2008 movie and my love of Hot Wheels stage I fell in love with Speed Racer and somehow got my hands on the original anime and I loved that too! There was also the Speed Racer Next Generation show but.... Well... lets not talk about that.
I was born in 2003 and yet, speed racer was part of my childhood. I watched it all on dvd over and over
That's how I did it too!
I LOVE SPEED RACER! I used to watch him when I was like 4. I am now currently going through all the episodes
I would always watch SR growing up late 60s to 70s. My favorite part of Speed Racer was when cars crashed and you knew as a kid that no one lived. My favorite example is the dude in a bubble car getting tossed off the road off into a mountain by the Mammoth Car.
Speed Racer was HARD CORE!
My dad got me the complete collection of speed racer as a gift and it has inspired my love of cars immensely. To this day it stands on the tv stand shelf and I catch a glimpse of it every day. I hope to pass down the love of that show to the next generation as well
That is GROOVY!
I loved the cartoon as a kid an had an absolute BLAST sharing the live-action movie with my then 4-year-old son who totally got it and was yelling WOOOO at the screen during the big race scene.
NGL I came from the memes and expected the comments to be a flame war between the memers and the boomers. But this is just a circle jerk of love for an old show, and that honestly warmed my heart.
That's a funny way to put it but thank you. Gotta respect the originals.
I’m 23 now and I first got this show when I was 10. I love this show still. I don’t FOCK with every show I’ve ever watched and due to dying so many different times I don’t like rewatching old things. But SPEED RACER IS AN EXCELLENT EXCEPTION
TRUTH! I just finished re-watched all 52 episodes again myself.
That Peter Fernandez bit. His mention of SR being shown on cartoon network is a feeling ill always remember. My kids were stunned as I pulled the dad card out demanding 'we' watch whenever it was shown for I gave up on watchable cartoons of the late 90's.
OMGGG THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS! ❤❤❤ It kind of makes me legit mad that most of the whole freakin' world these days couldn't take the original Speed Racer/Mach Go Go Go seriously if they tried - but this is serious if a little playful, positive, informative, fun, and just THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!1 This is like...the best thing. Thank you. >w< You are so awesome for making this and sharing it with us. All of your time and effort was so amazingly worth it. *HUGS* I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of all the incarnations as much, but I have to say how you covered the timeline and the evolution of it all really does all of the series a lot of justice and of course the always honorable nod to Mr. Fernandez and his wonderful contributions. This...this isn't just an awesome Speed Racer thing, this is possibly the best Speed Racer thing to come into existence right now, and again, I'm sure it was just a fun tribute thing for you but it made my night if not my week and probably the whole month. Again, just.... thankyouthankyouthankyou! ありがとうございます! You AND Speed are my heroes right now. >w< Mwee~♡
Glad to see there are still Speed Racer fans out there! The original Speed Racer site shut down a while back so I don't really have a fan-base to get in touch with. Again, Thanks for watching my video and I hope you can find others you can share it with.
i'd love to see an updated speed racer from tatsunoko
Totally! This series needs some love.
From Tatsunoko, no Speed Racer Enterprises who just messed up the rights to Speed Racer and used it to produce mediocre reboots and "sequels".
In NYC, S.R. aired every afternoon at 4:30 PM on WPIX channel 11. I was 7 when the Great Blackout happened. I was watching and suddenly the screen went to noise. I still remember how angry I was, having no idea what was happening. All these years later on RUclips I got to see 'the blackout episode'!
The show made a comeback as reruns on MTV broadcast in the early morning hours for 3 years from late 1992 to 1995. In 1993, the series was rebroadcast in syndication concurrently with a new American-created remake courtesy of the newly established Speed Racer Enterprises, with distribution by Group W's international unit. But in this version, all references to Trans-Lux were removed, with the opening sequence including a re-created logo, and the episode titles and closing credits were also re-created. The re-created closing credits include three typographical errors: Jack Grimes is misspelled Jack "Crimes," Hiroshi Sasagawa is misspelled Hiroshi "Sasacawa," and "Yomiko" is misspelled "Yumiko. This version later aired on Cartoon Network in the late afternoon (and later on in late night/overnight) from July 1996 to 1999, and is also the version of the series released on Region 1 DVD by Family Home Entertainment/Lions Gate Home Entertainment. The show was acquired by DiC Entertainment (dubbed as Speed Racer Classic by the company), producers of the original Inspector Gadget series (both the versions where he wore a mustache and the "non mustache" series, after MGM/UA forced DiC to take Inspector Gadget's mustache off claming it looked too similar to The Pink Panther's Inspector Clouseau), The Littles, Rainbow Brite, Heathcliff, Kidd Video, Wolf Rock TV (canceled after a half 1 season, later The Wolf Rock Power Hour 5 years later in 1989), The Get Along Gang, Pole Position (based off of the Namco video game of the same title), Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, season 1 of Care Bears (before losing the rights to Nelvana, DiC later won the rights back), Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling, Kissyfur, The Real Ghostbusters (later Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters), the cartoon adaptation of the 1984 movie Ghostbusters, Dennis the Menace, Dinosaucers, Popples, Beverly Hills Teens, Starcom: The U.S. Space Force, The New Archies, Alf (and its spin-off Alf Tales), Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater, COPS (later CyberCOPS), the later episodes of the final 3 remaining seasons of Alvin and the Chipmunks retitled The Chipmunks, and the retool of the 8th and final season as The Chipmunks Go to the Movies), The Super Mario cartoons, Camp Candy, The Karate Kid, the 2nd version of the continuation of G.I. Kabukiman, N.Y.P.D., and Battletoads pilots, the syndicated version of Captain N, called Captain N & the Videogame Masters, Super Dave: Daredevil for Hire, the comical Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog SatAm, Hurricanes, Double Dragon, Madeline, All-New Dennis the Menace, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?, Street Sharks, the americanized dub version of Sailor Moon, What-A-Mess, Gadget Boy, Ultraforce, Action Man, Inspector Gadget's Field Trip, Extreme Dinosaurs, Gadget Boy's Adventures in History, Mummies Alive!, The Wacky World of Tex Avery, Pocket Dragon Adventures, Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, Sonic Underground, Sabrina: The Animated Series, Archie's Weird Mysteries, Alienators: Evolution Continues, Mary-Kate & Ashley in Action!, Liberty's Kids, Stargate: Infinity, Speed Racer X, the 2003 relaunch of Strawberry Shortcake, Sabrina's Secret Life, Knights of the Zodiac, Horseland, the live action shows Zoobilee Zoo, the later episodes of season 4 of The Hitchhiker, Hey Vern, It's Ernest!, Something Else, Pepe Plata, Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, Rimba's Island, Old MacDonald's Sing-a-Long Farm, Cake, and Dance Revolution, as well as acquired shows like Bump in the Night and The Little Clowns of Happytown and shows not in their library like the Filmation late 60's and 70's Archie cartoons, Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa, The New Adventures of Speed Racer, All Dogs Go to Heaven: The Series, The Berenstain Bears, and The Smurfs, and later merged with Cookie Jar), was rerun for 1 year in the early 2000's from November 2003 to 2004 on FOX Cable Networks/Fox Entertainment Group’s motorsports-centric network, Speed Channel. It aired during the evenings at 6:00pm, Saturday and Sunday mornings at 7:00am, and late-night Friday from midnight to 2:00am.
Yeah. The 90s was a surprising revival for Speed Racer.... uh.... was this a "copy-paste"?
I love this. I was born in the 90s and my dad liked to watch it when he was younger. My grandma recorded every episode of the original series on tape for me when I was young and I watched them all the time. Still have them! It's exciting, the music is perfect, and it's just fun. Easily one of the best ever.
That's pretty Groovy! Every Episode! That takes dedication.
Speed Racer got anime started in America. Not DBZ. It was Speed Racer. DBZ may have revitalized it or kicked off a second wave but Speed Racer is the original.
Speed Racer, Astro Boy and Gigantor. The OG. Big 3.
This is a really awesome summary on why Speed Racer should still be considered a great show! It's my favorite anime (and I have a major crush on Speed), and it really is a unique show with engaging characters, interesting stories, and so much to love!!!!
Glad to know I ain’t the only one that has a thing for Speed. He was my first anime love.
What a handsome young man, indeed.

Also! I'm just now rewatching this and I'm also obsessed with the Monkees (Micky Dolenz was my next major crush since 2019 after Speed hehe) so yay for crossovers of boomer things! I also became a huge fan this summer of something called the Letter People which is also from the late 60s to mid 70s...

Amazing as always. A little fast in the intro but I liked it. Exaggeration and Annunciation is on par
The disclaimer was supposed to be fast...Just like how they talked in the show...HA HOO HA!

bro that ending was so wholesome I really liked everything the VA said
Me and a bunch of my friends found out that all of us watched Speed racer when we were little, and we all agree that it was amazing.
The voice actor at the end seems like the nicest guy ever.
Probably was.
I would love if Speed Racer got a lovingly made remake, a proper anime remake rather than a Saturday morning cartoon remake. Take what they did with Dororo, and don't do it bad
Me too!!! If there is a reboot, it needs to be in Tatsunoko's hands.
@@poni_poki it will always be in Tatsunoko's hands unless tatsunoko goes under.
I feel as though I have taken a well-informed glimpse into the past! Well done, Philip! You put this together so well, and you sounded professional. I liked hearing from the voice actor himself at the end. Inspiring.
I'm glad you thought this sounded "professional". I feel like I made so many flaws but if you like it I won't argue.
(I am glad you and others like the interview at the end as well.)
Great review! Wow you beat me to it. I also been writing material for a review for the series even thought of using the Peter interview to end it. XD
I was really surprised with the mafia element of the series & I absolutely loved the live action movie. Also, Speed Racer is a bit of a prototype for Gatchaman especially with Ken the Eagle & his dad Red Impulse. Joe the condor is also a racer who sometimes acts like Racer X in some episodes.
Tatsunoko has a lot of similarities in their style of Story-Telling. I'd still like to see your video. I bet it'll be great.
This cartoon is so much superior to any of the junk on today's T.V. Even the cars were something to watch.
Indeed, the colorful and unique car designs do draw my attention.
+SonicPAJ There was also Kimba the White Lion from Japan. Excellent quality cartoon. You have to admit how much would car enthusiasts love to have a real Shooting Star, GRX, Captain Terror and the rest of the car Acrobatic Team Cars, a Black Tiger car, the Prince Kabala car , the X3 Malage car. Even the Skull Duggery car. So many of them looked like something out of the 1967 Le- Mans. Along with the Batmobile every little boy wanted a Mach-5. But at that time nobody made a die-cast Mach-5. It is amazing how many real Mystery Machines, Speed Buggys are out there. Sponge Bob- Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles, what junk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well there's no need to put down other iconic pop-culture vehicles because of a lack of Speed Racer vehicle recreations.
Indeed the designs of many of the cars in Speed Racer were quite striking.
Technically though, the GRX (in the anime) is an engine and not the car itself.
Yes the 2d characters and poor animation really are far superior to anything produced in modern times.
+@@SonicPAJ The GRX looked like some type of Super Corvette. It looked like the Hot Wheels Torero 1969. Similar.
Wow! I grew up watching Speed Racer! I will always be a huge fan!
It sounds interesting, I'll definitely have to look into it. I'd never even heard of speed racer before.
Your profile photo of Speed, make me see the serie.

I actually watched a few episodes of the original series. I wish their would be a modern anime for it, that newer one seen in this video looks beautiful and it could only look better
Oh yeah! Some of the visuals from the pachinko machines are absolutely stellar.
Just finished watching all 52 episodes for the first time since I was 6, and it turns out that yesterday was the 9th anniversary of Peter Fernandez's passing.

4:42 The demon on wheels, in all his splendour.
I just started watching Speed Racer recently, and I gotta say I love it
Glad to hear it!
had all the episodes on disc when i was a kid, and it honestly probably formed all my current interests
I absolutely loved Speed Racer during the '70's! And those fantastic other cars....the GRX, the X-3, the mammoth car, and the duplicate mach-5. Such fun to watch!!
Speed Racer needs to come back
I'd love to see that (as long as it's done right.)
I remember watching the next generation when I was younger due to my love for the original Speed Racer, but after the first season, it seems like it vanished off the face of the Earth! I'm glad someone other than myself remembers it exists. Anyway, great video and a very nice message.
There was a second season but I have no idea when it actually aired. It's unfortunate Peter Ferneandez passed away between seasons. I would have lived to hear him portray Speed Sr. and Racer X again.
I love how even though Speed’s car is white with a big red M on it, no one ever questions why Racer X’s outfit is white with a big red M on it.
Yeah... I guess everyone's like "Oh... I guess he bought some Mifune Motors merch once. Not strange at all he wears the insignia of a small Mom & Pop shop. Yep. No connection whatsoever."
* punches @jeffsumstl in the stomach *
The most totally bonkers cartoon show anybody ever dreamed up and a true legend of the art.
I heard Speed Racer is getting a reboot and if Tatsunoko Productions is behind it, they should reboot him exactly like he appears in Yatterman at 7:00!
I really wished for the Speed Racer Live Action Movie Sequel
I really like the original speed racer, this is what got me into anime
Heck yeah Speed Racer
It's timeless. Enjoy your second watch.
_Speed Racer_ was my first anime. Of course, as a little kid in the 1970s I had no idea it was from Japan, but I knew it was different from other cartoons.
Later I found _Star Blazers,_ the first TV series I knew was from Japan, and there was _Battle of the Planets,_ which I also didn't know was from Japan but, like _Speed Racer,_ I knew it was different from other cartoons.
Then as an adult I fell in love with _Sailor Moon_ and now I go to convention. I call _Sailor Moon_ my "gateway drug" into anime, and that's true, but my FIRST anime was _Speed Racer._
Thank you for making this and sharing it. I will admit that I leaked a tear when I found out the voice of Speed Racer had died. Peter Fernandez's work lives on.
Yes! He truly was a pioneer of cross-culturing animation.
I hope that there will be some quality Speed Racer content in the near future that can be shared with the next generation.
I mentioned that I go to convention. I usually see someone cosplaying as Speed. Once or twice I've seen Trixie.
Starblazers was the best!
Ahhh good ol childhood Memories, thxs for making me remember this Show, was pretty shocked that it was an Original Anime 😱but still, thxs
Great show. Dazzling graphics and style. I can't help but wonder if the artist was creating a fantasy boyfriend in Speed. Not that there's anything wrong with that...works for me! Trixie be damned lol.
One of my all time favorite series I use to run an grab it from my dad's film collection
I’m so glad my dad raised me watching this show, he watched it as a kid too.
Glad to see Speed Racer is multi-generational.
i watched speed racer when i was 5 now im 15 and yes it is still my favorite anime
"....despite the staggeringly long list of casualties left in his wake."
I remember when my dad introduced me into speed racer back in 2007 I was 4 that was my childhood but too bad I never got to see it on tv I wish they stillmake episodes even tho I'm 15
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that Next Generation used the Mammoth Car and the X3 in full 3D models with upgraded textures simply because they were fan favorites? Next Generation did everything to try and please OG fans, and had plenty of fun references and easter eggs. For example: Zile Zazick the main antagonist of Next Generation season one is actually Captain Terror, leader of the Car Acrobatics team from the OG Speed Racer.
Another fun fact: Both versions of the Mammoth Cars appearances have 1 thing in common, an unset number of cars behind the intial one. In the OG it ranged from 6 to 12 cars depending on the shot. In Next Generation the Mammoth Car alters between 6 and 8 cars, and on one rare 1 frame screen you can even see 10 cars, a fun little detail that most likely was an inside joke.
Canonically though the Mammoth Car has a total of 8 cars, even if the animation says otherwise.
I will give Next Gen. credit for that. They even kept the sound effect.
@@SonicPAJ The Mammoth Cars horn sound is as iconic as it's image. Plus let's be honest, we all wish we had the Mammoth Car for ourselves the first time we saw it. Too bad the gas mileage is probably shit.
@Jonathan Menzies I wouldn't say it's better than the original, but it's definitely good.
@Jonathan Menzies To each their own, I grew up on the original series.

I’ve watched this series ever since I was about 5 and I’ve always loved it, so it’s nice to look back at some of the highlights in this review.
Speed Racer: Racer X, are you my long lost brother Rex Ra-

P.S. I love both the English and Japanese theme songs.
Oh hey... I dubbed that scene a while back.

Haha that’s from episode 50, I think.
I seriously believe if more children watch Speed Racer then the world would be a better place down the road.
It’s frightening to see 18-20 year olds today riot and looting and having no respect for authority and even more scary how we all just stay silent and frozen to do anything.
No different than how we have allowed kids to grow up these days without proper discipline.
I don't know if I would go that far, but I do know there is something wholesome about Speed Racer which is lost in this more cynical generation.
SonicPAJ well I look at it where the parents of today grew up watching Speed Racer themselves and if they are the ones encouraging to watch then it’s good parenting.
Sadly too many kids are simply allowed to play violent video games.
@@f430ferrari5 ... Did you miss the point I made that "Speed Racer" was a surprisingly violent show for its time? Compared to a lot of shows for kids today it's still comparatively intense.

Not too sure about Racer X but I did not know it was quite messed up and dark in its original native language and New Generation was trying to mimic the original style the original cartoon had. The characters in New Generation were fleshed out compared to the ones in the movie I feel.
So yeah, just hanging around town. ;) There is also a nod to Mach Go Go Go with Machine Robo Battlehackers where this character called Mach Blaster was given the tagline 'Mach Blaster Go Go Go' It's even the name of an episode in that show. ^_^
When I was very young say around 12 I could not stop watching this show. It made me happy I was going through a very hard time. Now cartoons will never have the same effect. Naruto, Pokemon, Speed Racer, Johnny Test, Johnny Bravo, Dexter Laboratory, Tom & Jerry and lets not forget Yogi Bear and The Jetsons.

I remember watching this with my dad after preschool in 1999. Good times
Hmmm... Then we must be around the same age.
Man, this thing needs another revival. Just something new would be so cool.
Oh yeah.... But who? But HOW?
@@SonicPAJ Does WB still own the rights to speedy? If so, try to pitch something that isn't as costly as a movie. Hell, I'd even settle for a book. Goddess knows it'd be a good read.
@@heartwellroots5365 I believe all the creative rights went back to Tatsunoko for better or for worse.
@@SonicPAJ either way, do the same thing. Just pitch something fresh and new.
I grew up on this show in brazil in the mid 70's and still is one of the best things 'bout my childhood
Was the series still called Speed Racer over there or was it known as "Meteoro"?
Who is that masked racer?
And why is he dressed like the Mach 5?
was waiting for the Go Go Go pun
