2 things that I can't get over. One, every contractor/handyman i've used has left me with a mess. To not only see you keep tabs on cleanup but also comment on it makes me wish more guys would hold true to the 'leave it cleaner than when you arrived' motto. Also, noticing the debris in the gutter and taking care of it rather than climbing down, going to the homeowner and saying 'might want to give that a look, see ya later!' is awesome. As always, informative and professional.
it is due to billing and liability. They may touch your gutter and remove the debri and destroy the gutters. They rather not touch it or even better upsell you on gutter debris removal " I have a cousin jimmy can get him out here tomorrow for good price to remove all that debri."
Lol you could always stop being a cheap ass and expect free shit🤣 there’s multiple reasons why things aren’t touched and unfortunately you’ll always deal with those joes that are not the type to clean up after themselves. Not saying it’s right but you always want to make sure beforehand.

I really appreciate you "cleaning up after yourself" and taking 5 minutes to address the downspout issue you found.
Small details like that make a massive difference. Stuff like that gets you a customer for life and referrals to friends and family.
Excellent walk through. Now that it's finally warming up, finally get a chance to inspect the roof, gutters, and windows this weekend. Got a feeling the caulking will look exactly like this house.
I dealt with a very similar situation once. the problem was actually the windows themselves. After multiple failed attempts at caulking nail holes flashing etc I finally put a strip of tape across the bottom of the window sill so create a dam. After spraying the $1000 Andersen windows with a hose I was able to duplicate the leak. little bit of caulking at the sill to jamb connection Fixed the leak! these were windows with a aluminum frame and it was leaking only at the factory connections.

@@TheHandyman1 I know what you mean. I have the 2nd gen too. As well as the shapshift. I find I use my 2nd gen when I want to be more concealed and the shapshift when I dont care as much or go outside the waist.

That roof to wall flashing, or lack thereof is a definite no-go, and that step shingle run terminating with the water dumping underneath shingles on the paper was a MAJOR no go. Holy smokes, I can't believe you actually masked off that trim before you caulk it! Awesome detail work man!

When I was a young guy, I bought a Reader's Digest handyman book. I'm sure you've seen them. As I took on new tasks, I found I could do them successfully with just the well-written and well-illustrated information in this book, at least on the second try
For a while, I had it in my head that I could be a handyman. Sure, I would just read up on how to do a job before I took it on , right? Well It didn't take me long to realize I would be in way over my head. You have to be a carpenter, an electrician, a plumber, a roofer, a stone mason... whew, I'm out of breath.

I've seen guys work on apartment roof leaks many times. Around $350 for a simple tar job. Saw a guy do 7 repairs within a a Cpl hours. We pay $450 now but I do most of the repairs. I only call them if it isn't an obvious leak location. Which they usually get called back for under the 1 yr warranty. Great vid

I had two leak repairs this winter that were much worse. Replaced the windows, sill, had to reinforce the studs and trim it out with aluminum and caulk it all. 🤑

I'm too far away though & am using your videos to fix that which money cannot seem to buy. My livingroom has had a small leak since 2010 and no one will address, they just keep telling me to replace the roof that was installed in 2009.
I have a periodic leak since I bought my house in 1993. Had roof replaced twice and still get a leak in the exact same place periodically sometimes 6 months later. Think it might be blowing in from side of roof. Don't know who to call?

That was a good comment. 🤣😁 You know I have a full set of new 20V cordless tools. I choose not put them in the trailer. I also have all the 20v cordless nailguns. Close to $1800 in cordless tools. I can't risk keeping them in the trailer. I use the old 18V and can sleep at night. The others stay locked in my house.
My ex brother-in-law owned a roofing company and I worked a few weekend jobs with him. Pissed me off to see the mess that they'd leave on roofs when they were done, even on a complete re-shingle. Scraps laying here & there, etc. "Can't see it from my house" was their motto. Screw that. The job isn't finished until it's clean.

I appreciate your videos, I am learning a lot, specifically about roof flashing and leaks. I have been trying yo figure out why my 1st floor ceiling has a leek while the second floor above it foes not. I do not believe when I had the new roof done 8 or so years ago they did not use valley flashing but did use 2 layers of tar paper. Any hints how to do that joint for this novice? (Im asking because I have been out of work since march)

And the person who put it on there when I warrant it because transfer of ownership. Bad excuse for a cop out. Yes, water can enter at point A and exit at point Z. Sneaky slippery stuff.
At 4:00 those prefab window units mostly have integrated flashing that would lay against the exterior wall and should be sealed somehow during install, and the trim just covers that. Caulk is further limiting water egress, but is mostly protecting the trim itself. The fine art of following the downhill flow of water during hard rain, or even when snow or ice creates dams that redirect flow into small gaps in shingle overlap, or flashing installed the wrong direction, is what results in successful leak repair. Applying sealants without considering how that may just create new dams, farther uphill, can exasperate the DIY er; think about redirecting the flow around and past a weak area, beyond just closing the spot where water enters. It is surprising how simple nail holes on a slope often cause no leaking, because water does not pool there, whereas corners and overlaps that make small collection points can become the recurring problem.
I like lexel caulk for stretchy or wet areas that stuff is great.
With enough rain and time that downspout is gonna grow a Jimmy Carter.
Actually, the home inspector would (best case scenario) be able to write up that there is evidence of a past leak, but that no active leak was noticed. Conjoin this with the previous owners claiming that it was an issue, but that they had it fixed, and there's not much a home inspector can do unless it's raining on the day of the inspection.

What are you thoughts on the Liberty Self Adhesive roll roofing? About to redo a 18' x 8' low slope extension on a 1969 single wide trailer.
The best roof caulk that I have used is Loctite S30 Polyurethane Roof and Flashing Sealant. It lasts for years in the weather and it is also an excellent flexible adhesive (works great to glue shoe soles). The only downside is that it only comes in black).
Wouldn't you want light to be able to penetrate your sealant for future repair visibility?

So important to keep gutter clear of the mud and shingle grit. The weight pulling gutters down and constantly keeping the gutter wet is a problem brewing.

I have yet to see a home inspector worth a darn. Thinking about getting certified to do it myself; give those realtors a run for their money.
Tell me about it,,,I paid$250. For the inspector and he failed to find a major leak that was on going to notify me or my realtor before I bought the house.. now im stuck with looks like $1000's of dollars worth of repairs. Smh it's a damn shame

I am called for many a leak at our Jersey shore condo complex. I have invested in infra red equipment and non pin type moisture meter to help me determine root cause of the leak.
Our community it directly exposed to noreaster storms. A hole the diameter of a toothpick will leak gallons of water during a storm as the pressure differential on the house will literally suck the water in.
When I do a quick caulk job and can't determine the source of the leak sometimes the homeowner will tell me I fixed their leak after the next rain event.
I tell them wait a year then tell me I fixed it.
A leak like yours may only happen a few times a year. That's how homeowners can live with them. And how shoddy contractors can get away with shitty work.

Working good so far. I had a lot of people in the comments recommend it to me.
OSI Quad Max for your exterior caulk and Geocel for your roof fix and that repair will last forever. Saschco is the best for interior baseboards but a latex based caulk outside won't last as long. Also, skip the tape and get a Pro Caulk caulking tool. Tape is for rookies :-)

Have an 8 ft section of siding gonna be replacing on a house due to water damage. Far as know, not leaking on inside. Will be using T1-11 plywood siding to match existing siding on house(hate this stuff, cuz rots easier then other products; but it is easy to replace at least).

If you count the number of jack studs and you can locate the window seat vs. header vs. king studs. It was definitely leaking at the base of that window for sure.

The exterior window trim , the side pieces are to run past the bottom trim piece and not caulked in to allow water to drain , additionally there should be a Z flashing on top of window , turned down at corners about 3/8 inch !
Where you said , definitely water getting in here is exactly why the side trim runs past bottom and left uncaulked !!
Use a pvc trim board for window trim. Pricey but you’ll never have to replace it again.

scrape it clean, brush away the dust, Liquid Nails caulking will fill any space, never harden, and stays in place. It works in central NH for years outside.
Could be coming from the Z above that elliptical if the sliced the upper flange to make that radius it coulda compromised tha cap and coming down undetected around that upper.

How do you like working out of the trailer? I basically do the same thing you do but out of a van. I've been entertaining the thought of getting a trailer for some time but I always talk myself out of it due to having the extra length to haul around. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts. How do you do full kitchen gut jobs or deliver cabinets in a van. My tools would never fit in a van. I have to full chest tool boxes. 2 work benches. Do you also have a pick up truck?

I really wanted to be able to use a van or step van. I need a way to pick up materials, and dispose of jobsite demo. I had an idea to buy and build out a fedex style truck. Lots of room for tools and materials.

Peanuts in a downspout...I think I saw a video on Live Leak where a guy got his peanuts caught in a downspout. It swelled up something awful...

Some builders and especially the cookie cutter subdivisions that go up really quick, they don't care or take time to do stuff right. If it last past the warranty period, then it's not their problem. They may be builders, but they are not Craftsman.

Is there any specific reason why you use different type of silicone caulking for window and roof? Or only because of color difference?
You can't paint silicone caul.
In a situation like this where the root cause is not clear, you've fixed what you could which is great. However if they report the leak still happening, would you go back to inspect again, included in the original cost they paid, or would you charge again for further inspection?
If my repair didn't fix it I would go back and and fix again for no charge. That has never happen to me though. If I was unsure of the repair I would have gotten the hose out and sprayed the roof and side of the house down until I was 100 percent sure where the leak was coming from.

Handyman, how do you keep your caulk (in the tube) from drying out inbetween jobs?
Caulk doesn't dry out in the tube. Just a little at the tip. I cut the tip and push out the small amount that has dried.
How do you like that vacuum? Struggling on spending $120 on it. The brother to it the porter cable is only $80 but I have a lot more DeWalt batteries.
I like it. I have to keep the filter clean or it loses it power. It takes new and old Dewalt batteries.

The guy I hired to do my home inspection missed a completely rotted out patio door. Ended up costing me 2 grand to replace. I don't fault him though. Whoever "repaired" it did a phenomenal job hiding it.
what about the cracks in the caulk where the siding connects the trim above the window at 7:10 ?
That crack is where the siding meets the flashing. The flashing goes up behind the siding. Water can't get behind anything through that crack.

Home inspectors here in Massachusetts are not allowed to go on roofs as it's a liability issue. Sellers are liable if the inspector falls off. They do roof inspections from the ground with binoculars or a drone
