    I live in a flat with a plastered concrete ceiling, there was water coming through for months (it was like mud in areas). It's now all dry and I'm guessing getting all the old plaster hacked off first is recommended, rather than trying to smooth it over?

      Typically we use British Gypsum plaster here in the UK. It is naturally this colour and dries a light pink colour. The colour comes from the substrate, which is clay rock, that surrounds the gypsum in the ground.

    When he puts in the screws in the plastor board. What exactly is he screwing them into? It seemed like there was just open air on the other end closer to the camera. Do you screw them into a beamnor wood?

    • @derriet6806

      at around 30 seconds in, he says cut a line along the joist. There is a joist/beam of wood directly above the cut he made but the camera angle doesn't show it well.

      This is plaster, so it's different from standard drywall that can just be mudded and taped, then coated and painted. I own a property that's 100 years old and it has plaster & lathe walls and ceilings. The steps are always different when I have to do repairs over there vs at my house, which has drywall. Drywall is way easier. Any ceiling damage I've had to fix really sucks because that plaster skim coat can start peeling and then it quickly creates huge cracks and peeling sections. I was told the only way to fully prevent those headaches would be to mount a thin layer of 1/4 inch skimming drywall over the plaster ceiling. That would be cost prohibitive, plus it would drop the ceiling down by 1/4 inch or so, which is just enough to ruin the beautiful picture rail style crown molding all throughout the living spaces.

    • @ryanseeley
      @ryanseeley  Год назад +1

      Hi, if the ceiling is textured or has a pattern in it then it could contain asbestos. If you want to make sure you can order an asbestos testing kit online and send a sample in for testing.

    • @terrapinflyer273
      @terrapinflyer273 Год назад +1

      According to my uncle, who has had several government jobs in relation to contracting and inspection, there are some tile sizes thay can identify asbestos materials. I don't remember specifics, but after it became known that asbestos was harmful they changed size standards to easily identify floor tiles. Not sure about ceilings, but better to have someone come look at it. You may need licensed professionals to remove it, as damage done to it can enter the air inside the home as well as your lungs.

      Once it gets that wet & stained the integrity of the gyprock sheet has failed and there is no strength left. Also it is almost impossible to block those stains coming through in the future. You would spend more time / money trying to save it rather than just cutting out the cancer once & for all.
