Before you get on the roof and begin doing some repair work, make sure you follow the basics of safety.
First, place your ladder in a location that will provide for the minimum amount of climbing. There’s no need to climb to a high roof point on the front of the house if there’s a much lower spot right around the corner. Second, make sure your ladder is big enough. If getting up on the roof means you’ll have to put a foot on that last step, stop and go get another ladder - maybe even an aluminum extension ladder as we did. And finally, if it’s at all possible, ask someone on the ground to hold the ladder for you while you get up and down.
One of the best things you can do to avoid having to repair your roof is simple preventative maintenance. Ideally, you should perform semi-annual inspections to identify and solve problems as they occur. Roofs get more abuse from the elements than any other part of the building, and preventative maintenance is a key element to saving money on your roof by providing a longer service life.
Clean all debris from the surface of the roof. This includes debris that has gathered behind HVAC units, pipes and pitch pans, and any other roof penetrations. Debris has a tendency to hold water, and water will cause the roof to deteriorate much faster than it otherwise would, especially if your roof is asphalt based such as a built-up roof or asphalt shingles. If your roof is starting to collect moss or algae, install some zinc or lead control strips.
Here are some other roof repair maintenance ideas. Dab some roof cement under any loose shingle tabs. One dab on either side should do. Replace any damaged shingles.
Keep all gutters free of debris. Make sure that the downspouts are draining properly by water testing them and trim back any overhanging tree branches.
You might also check the flashings. The function of flashings is to provide a watertight junction between roofing materials and roof projections or other parts of the structure, and between roof sections. Many early roof problems are actually flashing problems. Often, repairing the flashings or providing new flashings is all that is needed to make the roof watertight again.
Most flashing problems result from inadequate flashing design or faulty construction. Flashings should be designed to furnish service for at least as long as the materials used in the field of the roof. Flashings are the most vulnerable part of any roof. Their importance and the importance of maintaining them properly cannot be overemphasized.
In many instances, leaks occur at flashings where there are no flashing defects. These leaks may be the result of open joints in a masonry wall or coping cap, which permits water to enter behind the flashings and into the building. This problem may be eliminated by "through-wall" flashings.
Beyond maintenance, if you need help on any specific roofing problem, ask for advice at your local hardware store or home center - or try looking for information on-line. Remember, every home has a roof, and if yours has a problem, the odds are that someone else has had the problem before and is ready to help with the knowledge and tools to get your home the shelter it needs.

I have watched 26 leaking roof repair videos. This was my favorite. It was simple and to the point and surprisingly informative for a 6 minute DIY video. Thank you.
i liked the part where her extension ladder slides around on the section of 2x4, when she should have installed a ladder stabilizer instead.
But over simplifies, more to do
most attractive roofer I've ever seen
This is by far the best roof repair "how to" video I've yet seen. There are so many people out there who know HOW to do a job, but have no clue how to TEACH another person to do it. Teaching skills are essential before anyone decides to make a RUclips video. Well done! A+
One of the best videos on simple fixes. Most contractor videos tell you the problems by playing fears to get customers. This lady actually shows you how to fix the simple problems! Thumbed up and subscribed!
strong 90s vibes, lovin it
Was thinking that too. Didn’t know if this was just an old video or what 😂
The Hair... the Eyes... Breathtakingly Beautiful! Love to learn watching Teresa!
Great job Teresa! I love seeing women tackle their own problems. No damsel in distress here 😀
Because they had the men do all the hard stuff off camera and then edit to her hammering nails. LMAO
@@PrincernPrince 🤣🤣🤣 maybe
Beautiful and fearless. Walks on the rooftop like cat. Wow!
I'm an owner builder and DIYer. Appreciate this video for easy handling!
Very well done video and straight to the point with no fluff. Thank you.
Are you stupid lol? Terrible job on the last vent
Your voice is clear and explains things very well. Hope to see more videos.
I can't decide which is funnier, the video or the comments 😂
Thank you for the excellent service information given to us.
Pretty good diagnosis, Well explained and excellent work.
Thank you for the information. You have covered small details I haven't seen in other videos.
Great video ! I'm about too do some roof repairs. This is a great reference guide.. Thank you so much 💯
Good video.. What I like is a show, tell and do it while you are talking. You nailed it (so to speak).
Outstanding video got it saved. As a single woman, I appreciate this video so much
Good camera work and clear step by step repair instructions, 👍
A good learning to repair the roof, in a short time video, to the point, , comprehensive, Thanks.
a lot.
Thank you for the clear explanation and great video. I noticed from other comments I'm not the only one who had to search through more than a few videos to find one that was actually helpful!
Then you haven't watched any professional roofers (videos) make these type repairs. A diy person could still make them, as a professional roofer, not really that difficult with proper instruction. "Grand Roofing Inc." and "Veteran Construction" being YT channels that come to mind. Take care.
I wish my roof was the same type as the house you're working on; it would make my repair soooooo much easier.
u saved me alot of money thank you , i cant belive i just get to see your channel , keepgoing amazing work
Hi Teresa, this video is very good and very well explained.. the reason I found you was that I have a inside leak inside my wanigan and I live in Alaska and it has been raining cats and dogs... none stop and my cieling got super wet and it is now falling from the inside. Anyway have a great day, and we'll be looking for more vids..
Really good job on repair and instruction on the video, well made.
Not everyday you see a beautiful woman repairing the roof. Great video.
Great video and presentation.
When you replaced the vent it confused me how water wouldn't get in the house the way the shingles were. Btw, I watched several of these videos with guys teaching who didn't teach half as well. Thank you for this. Made sure to Like it.
The shingle goes up quite a bit under that cap seal so it's actually over top of shingles as well, but yeah that space around the pipe is pretty big. seems they would have made the shingles closer to the pipe, also I don't like to see nails on the lower end of the boot seal because they will likely leak later on once the tar dries out.
@@BigAlWillis yessir. Always used to do that and caulk, but man is in nicer to jjst nail the flange under the higher courses of shingles.
Also the rigid flange needed cause those damn floppy ones suck.
Thank you. Perfect for me to do it myself. Very simple and saves me $$
You're a dude you should already know
This is a great video, love the advice and an obvious expert. One note, I believe you want to do the nails above the tar strip so there is no possible water leak gap, can check on the install instructions of the shingles to confirm. This is true for the flashing around the vent as well, you want the nails under the shingles up the slope of the roof so as to not create a hole for water to get in, though since she's sealing it with roofing cement it's probably fine as long as the cement is rated to last as long as the rest of the flashing.
Thank you. Very clear and simple instruction! just subscribed
Nice , short simple and beautiful....
Thank you so much you explained everything very well, but i have been doing this for 7 years now and i will not critique, you seem to be very knowledgeable on many fields of work and i am impressed, but i specialize in doing repairs now and was wondering how many videos there where on the repair aspect, thank you for your time
Great handywoman!👍
Very informative and doable. Thanks
👍 Total boss lady! Great teacher!
I am afraid of heights! Good video!
Nice work lady.

Amazingly amazing job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very well done my sisters, grate job.
She makes this looks so easy
Add another shingle to last vent. Very exposed. Good job on sharing tips.
Your roof is same mine all used staples instead of nails so I learned from this. Thks
Beautiful! The roof is job is too!
Phenomenal camera work.

Good Job
Great video
Placing a 2 x 4 against the fascia board to protect the shingles from a ladder----Thanks, I learned something today (10/14/23) Jack Nicholson, Richardson, TX
Good video
Billions of likes for the presentation skill ✨️
Thank you for this video, I have been ripped off by so many men and they have made more damage, now I know how to correct it myself thank you for empowering me.
Thank you.
Good job! Enjoyed the video..
Bountiful work
THANK YOU
Good job
Make it looks so simple 👍
Good job
Thank you.
That last one you replace is going to leak bad. Not enough coverage on the top portion, wind is going to push that water right in there.
Its homeowner diy so when it does leak they can call you lol
I was like hey lady yer not done...
Wow was looking for someone to confirm my theory about that last one
i saw that to.. she could have cut the shingles rounded out alil more on the parts that were hitting the vent soo it would slide up in there more.. way tomuch of the upper part of the vent exposed, it looked like it was only 2 inches under the shingles.
She’s definitely a long way from the kitchen
Wow nice job
Not really, it will now leak for sure.
Awesome job! Wish my daughters would help me roof!
So cute. I like diy too. Thanks
Best looking roofer too! LOL nice and to the point.
Wow good video
She got on that roof like a champ 👍
👍Very professional Thank you!
Good looking work/er!
thanks.
Hold up... Did she just put holes in the fascia to protect the shingles she's about to replace?
Haha Ikr and ladder is backwards when she climbs it 😂
THank you !
The board so the step ladder doesn't rest on the shingles. I keep hitting my forehead. Lol. Love this video.
Great video! Would be curious if you've ever tried to use a Perma-Boot for a pipe boot repair? I saw them in Home Depot the other day and was just curious.
great to learn
You are a pro roofer.
Made it look easy
Your the bomb! My fear is relieved. Found water coming through the bathroom vent tonight at 3 A.M. Complete panic set in. Had to crawl up in the attic to see what was going on. Definitely coming through the vent. Gonna tackle it tomorrow morning. I'm gonna sleep better now. Thank You!
How did it turn out?
He fell off and died.
@@krakenwoodfloorservicemcma5975 RIP!

#BigInspiration
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😍😍
Love it!
Thank you!!!!!!!
I married you 😍😍 good work and tks now I know how to fix my roof
Came to watch the roof repair tutorial but got way distracted because the teacher was so hot so I gotta replay the video and it's now 2:20AM.
Wow nice roof
Wow! Amazing ...you save yourself a couple of hundred dollars. Good for u
Roof Stapled ? Check all !
Polyurethane caulk tacks up faster. Seal tab area with it. Pipe and vent flashings? If sealant is needed. Most cases it was installed wrong.
Both flashings will (after what she did) will leak. There's not enough coverage at the top on both.
Also, her extension ladder wasn't extended safely, and I'd rather ding up a little piece of shingle than put two holes in the fascia.
she is a beutiful profesional girl (Muy bonita)
BINGO!!!!LOOOVE IT.
Very skilled young lady. Except void warranty once done and now 8k-20k+ for a new roof down the road.
I tried to go to our garage roof and felt terified that I would fall specially when I was climbing down because there's nothing to hold on to.
In the UK this is the kind of stuff we put on our garden shed, though no doubt with builders making houses cheaper it will only be a matter of time until this stuff is common house building practice in UK. Many thanks😀👌
Since it works, you should put it on any building. Simple is best instead of over complicated fluff.
What is the type of cement in the calking gun that was used? BTW great video fast and to the point thanks.
You'd be off my job if you nailed into a fascia board like that just for a ladder. No point in nailing into that drip edge either. If you have to nail, nail below drip edge and hit with some white caulk/silicone when done.
Having said that, I know most people don't have a roofing ladder handy. From experience, unless you have some roofing experience from/with a roofer that knows his/her trade, I would just call a roofer. If you don't know what you're doing you can get up there and make things a lot worse than they are. But if you have the basics, you can and will save some money.
Awesome
