Great video. I have a hole in my roof from a branch from a tree falling and after watching this I know with confidence I can do this repair. You explain everything very well and I appreciate you making the video. Cheers.
I consider the roofing felt as the water proof membrane. the shingles are there to protect the roofing felt from the uv rays and critters from damaging the roofing felt. In extremely windy areas, I over lap the the felt 12" to 18" to prevent water from being blown up under the edge of the felt as well caulk between the layers of roofing felt. Shingles are not a waterproof membrane. Deck repair looked good. shingle placement looked good too. I always match the deck material. The paper under the shingles is the very cheapest roof waterproof membrane known. Properly installed 30 lb roofing felt will keep water from causing this kind of damage for 30 years, but it is very difficult to slip under the paper in a repair. I've removed roofs that the shingles were totally degraded and falling apart but still no leaks because of the roofing felt installed. There were a few brands of shingles that didn't require roofing felt, but the ones on this roof were not of this type. I would inspect the rest of the roof from the inside for more leaks. The crappy piece of wood was a nailer that looks like it had failed when some one stepped on it tearing the paper when the roof was new. This is is what caused the roof to leak.
Great job friend! Thank you for sharing this with us. We have a roof leak right now over our utility room. As a woman, I find a roof leak so disconcerting. But I have faith that my husband can repair it, because we can certainly not afford the ridiculous cost of a new roof right now. The one thing that our ancestors had over us was that they could just replace their whole roof with what nature had to give them. They did not have to worry about a $20k new roof. We live in such a ridiculous time - even down to our cars that all have become ridiculous - a common person cannot even do simple repairs to these new cars. I am needing to repair a smaller section on my back porch - where the roof was flat (they didn't think to slope it) and I was forgetful to not clear out the fall leaves, that I guess rotted through the flat shingles. My only surprise was that you did not install any 'black paper' or even asphalt tape to the wood for a 2nd layer of protection. I've gone through most of these comments and while I agree with everyone about the underlayment I must add that IT'S CODE. Hilarious that "Roofing Solutions by Eric Garcia" says "I come across roof that don't have any felt AT ALL over the entire roof and they never have a water leak" I thought he was in California where Code is actually two layers of underlayment. So to not have any means whoever put that roof down didn't care about the Code. There is a reason that's in the building code. Call your city offices and ask for the International Residential Code and then ask them what changes the city made or added. Unless you live in an area where it never rains I doubt your local code says you don't need an underlayment. I live in El Paso, Texas where the sun shines most of the year. It rains we hardly ever get snow, but an underlayment is still in our local code. However on my roof I took it a step further I did a layer of Tyvek and a layer of 30lb felt. Before that though I used Graco and taped the joints of the sheeting. I covered the eaves with self-sealing membrane then the Tyvek and felt. The retired roofer that lived next door to me said, "that's never going to leak." That was my plan. The person who had installed the prior roof violated code 1) used 3/8 inch plywood over 24O.C. rafters 2) did not use any flashing on any vent, duct for the AC, none on the chimney 3) basically glued a skylight cap down to the roof opening, no curb, no flashing, no protection whatsoever 4) no flashing in the valley no membrane just intersecting shingles sooooo I made sure I would have no problems in the future I used 5/8 plywood, underlayment as stated, proper flashing everywhere, built my own skylight curb, stuck to Code or did it better. Followed the six-nail pattern for high wind on the shingles. Best thing I can say to everyone if you follow the Code and the instructions on the stuff you use whatever project you do will last a lot longer when done right.
15 lb felt or "Tar paper" is is part of IBC since like the seventies lol. ( Building code) Asphalt, tile, cedar shake, composite...doesn't matter what type of shingle; all require some sort of moisture barrier. He should have put down felt
He took a shortcut, on a low slope roof, shouldn't have. Paper/felt is cheap, and good insurance. Took a lot of time and patience with the old shingles, tho.
Good clear instruction. But as others point out, it seems a major flaw to not use waterproof felt or roofing paper. Also, unless the neighborhood is very poor, most homeowners would not want to repair a black roof with white shingles.
I saw that myself just from reading other posts and videos but I assume it's because 1. It was gonna be extra work and 2. Extra money when he was gonna redo the entire roof for metal anyways at least that's what I think. Otherwise good video
Would you not use a little tarpaper over the cutout you made before putting the shingles down? Or perhaps calk around the seams of the new piece at least before putting them down? Just asking because I have to do something similar to this on the shed at the back of my house. A few years ago we put some new shingles down over the older ones, and there was a leak that I tried to patch from the underside of the leak, did not have time to cut it out because i did not know much about doing it, and for a time, it worked ok, but came back slowly a few years later. So now I will have to take a section of the shingles out, and replace the wood underneath to stop the leak, and fix some rotting issues there. The insurance company had wanted new shingles up there, so I only had a limited time to do something to it back then, and I had no money to hire a pro.
You said thank you ! No , I say Thank you this is going to save me $$$$$$ .I have all the material just really hot weather need a little cooler temperature woooo . It's really hot on that roof. Thanks again.
What tools would you say are a necessity for this type of job. My mother inlaws roof is looking really sad. A lot of sagging spots. I am debating trying to do this myself, last resort, I call in a contractor. IT is only an 80ft singlewide trailer.
Definately use felt paper, it is a water proofing layer, along with allowing the shingles to breath. Every shingle manufacturer that i have heard of requires felt to be used or it will void their warranty

15 lb felt or "Tar paper" is is part of IBC since like the seventies lol. ( Building code)
Asphalt, tile, cedar shake, composite...doesn't matter what type of shingle; all require some sort of moisture barrier.
He should have put down felt
He took a shortcut, on a low slope roof, shouldn't have. Paper/felt is cheap, and good insurance. Took a lot of time and patience with the old shingles, tho.
Would the shingles require roofing cement between the bottoms & the sunroof surface?
What are the green things for at the end of video
What about the black paper you should put under your shingles?
Tar
Good clear instruction. But as others point out, it seems a major flaw to not use waterproof felt or roofing paper. Also, unless the neighborhood is very poor, most homeowners would not want to repair a black roof with white shingles.
I saw that myself just from reading other posts and videos but I assume it's because 1. It was gonna be extra work and 2. Extra money when he was gonna redo the entire roof for metal anyways at least that's what I think. Otherwise good video
Leak vs. No leak, I'll take the latter regardless if color, petty problems, smh
I like the metal roof u did, I just started mine this week.so far so good.
The insurance company had wanted new shingles up there, so I only had a limited time to do something to it back then, and I had no money to hire a pro.
when replacing OSB should always leave a small gap all around for possible expansion
Ok what is osb..??? Or what kind of wood is it..??
What about the crap inside the roof?? Shpuld you let the roof dry...or spray anything inside the hole to kill mold?
Thank you for sharing have a good day today
I wanted know if it was the shingles that failed ? Thank you for posting.....
In germany we say roofs are not waterproof but waterresistent.
Hi Scott I have no experience installing shingles, in your opinion, should I leave to a professional,?
Could you closely match the color... or they are out of stock
What are the green tag marking?
Thanks for this video, very didactic. But, why you did´nt put felt below the shingles??
Thanks for sharing. You certainly saved some good money if were to contract a roofer.
Exactly what I need to do to my mobile this weekend. Thanks for the info!
what kind of boots work best for sticking on shingles so that dummies like me do not slip off the roof?
What is OSB?
Was there a reason you didn’t use paper under the shingles?
How much would a repair job like that cost?
Great video very well shot explaining the whole process. Cheers!
Don't get any ideas it would be some real ass if you tried this, trust me pal you're not that guy!
You said thank you ! No , I say Thank you this is going to save me $$$$$$ .I have all the material just really hot weather need a little cooler temperature woooo . It's really hot on that roof. Thanks again.
Awesome! Can't wait to see the metal roof video!
Philip Marte he posted it in his channel
I know right? I am looking forward to it too!! :)
Did they not have the shingles that matched at the store?
+AmateurHomestead is there a video of the softwashing showing shingles matching?
What tools would you say are a necessity for this type of job. My mother inlaws roof is looking really sad. A lot of sagging spots. I am debating trying to do this myself, last resort, I call in a contractor. IT is only an 80ft singlewide trailer.
Definately use felt paper, it is a water proofing layer, along with allowing the shingles to breath. Every shingle manufacturer that i have heard of requires felt to be used or it will void their warranty
How much would that job cost?
How come you didn't use a moisture barrier?
Thank you so much for this video I have to do this when I get back from my current deployment
I have a shed with the same problem. But the shed has a sharp angle. Real tough to be on the roof. Any suggestions?
Thank you. I found a metal hook that connects to a ladder which can connect to top of shed. Was thinking of using that. (Forgot what it is called)
Excellent work! Great video! Thank you. New subscriber!
Excellent video!!
What would you charge someone to do that repair?
What about the underlayment?
How tall is your ladder?
run chalk lines? sometimes not very often.
