As a retired roofing contractor when the roof was first shown the first thing that came to my mind because it was an open area was nail pop. Good video. I used to volunteer and do bi-annual inspections of a little old lady in my church and fix problem areas. She didn't have any money so after fixing about 20 nail pops over a 2 year period I got some guys in the church to pitch in and we roofed it for her for free.
That's a nice church you all go to. No way you could knock on doors and get a set of neighbors to do that. I'm picturing a little old lady smiling after her new roof was installed. I bet she was thankful each time you came out too. Makes me want to return to church and see what it's like there. It was just like you mentioned and probably still is.
@@willoughby1888 In this day and age, some of the best people are found in church. Yes there will be some hypocrites' but many good people. Plus the Lord wants us to take care of the elderly.
@@jvillebil13 I am "the elderly". I have a hard time walking now, and I haven't driven in decades. I think I can still make it to church though. Last few times I went they had loud youthful music and nobody could head each other. Even S.A. was like that. The other churches I belonged to got sold and I ended up moving.
Nice. I am an Atheist, and I help people. Not all good people go to church. But for some reason church gives people a reason to be nice. When you do not need a reason to be nice. Just be nice because it feels good to help those of us who are in need.
I'm a young carpenter just getting into it and just did my first roof recently. Your videos were immensely helpful, passed final inspection from the city with flying colors. Love your videos, they're very helpful for young people like me just getting into the trades.
I had 8 inches of rain fall within hrs and noticed small leaks in attic. Went to roof and saw no visible areas of damage. Now I know what to look for. thanks!!!
Thank you for telling me about this good sir. I’m not the handiest guy but I am aware of how often I’m dealing with scammy contractors. The problem is that it doesn’t matter if I know, the work still needs to be done and if I can’t find someone who won’t rip me off I either just have to pay them to swindle me or figure out how to do the job myself. Either way your video helps.
I wish you was just around my area. I've learned so many things from you over the last few years, but I know my roof is coming to the end of its life in the next few years and you would get my roof replacement without a doubt. Thanks Brian
Doing my first roof repairs on a shed with 3 tab shingles. Watched all your videos. Feeling confident I can do it. All thanks to you. Much appreciated bro man! Wishing all roofers fortune and happiness!
You are honest and have integrity. Thank you for showing us how repairs should be done to save everyone money i.e. less insurance claims that are actually repairabvle. It is tempting to claim complete loss to get a "free" roof replacement but insurance is to cover loss not what fraudsters try to get from it.
love this kind of content...when you not only explain it but quickly show exactly how to do it. Sometimes I don't fully understand the explanation if you don't show it. This one was pretty straight forward but the dabbing instead of a straight line answered some questions for me. Thanks.
I'm a roofer and I agree that most roofing companies hire sales people that call themselves roofers but they don't even know how to install a basic shingles. Most storm chasing companies are that way! I've had so many clients get their roof misdiagnosed from major roofing companies and they were charged out of the wazoo. It's really sad that there are some terrible companies that have no clue what they are doing.
Framing/roofing sub 30+ here, great job! Correct about the "brittle" test too-ANY shingle roof can be repaired, anytime. I'd hire u in a heart beat young man. (I probably would have pulled the nail and replaced w/new straight driven nail but as u said, freebee)
Easy job! ALL the leaks I had were totally INVISIBLE. All the roofers want to re-roof the whole area at $2500. Also mine not a gravy job like this one in the video! My roof is at a 45 degree slope!
Thank you for another excellent video! It’s incredibly informative and will be very helpful for homeowners. I have a question - when it’s time to replace the shingles, how do you go about finding a matching style? Is there a specific technique for selecting the right shingles? Thanks again!
Thank you. I repair for a living and have about given up locating the leaks. Tell the customer to call in the roofers. But you just shared that I have great hope to fix some of these little pests. But those California pavers. Nope, staying away. I have no idea what I am looking for..
Great video, you could use a down bar to hammer the nails that under the shingles the ones at floorcovering supply shops have a magnetic head there great for getting hard to reach fastners
Good information. My roof leak is a different kind and a different problem, but I will find and fix it if it's the last thing I do. A leaking roof will completely destroy a house. The roof I'm working on is flat. It's leaked before in different places over the years, and it's always been around an edge or seam where it leaks. Never through the roof itself even if there is standing water. I redid an entire section one time and that wasn't it. Water was getting around the edge from poor a flashing install.
Great video. Now I have a clue what to look for tomorrow morning! Very thorough and informative and speaking on a homeowners level. I wish more contractors were motivated to help like you. Thanks again! 👍🏻👍🏻
I am a female, and have always been handyvand dont like paying money to a tradesman to do a job i think i could possibly do myself and save tons of money. This content is easier to watch than some. I just find alot of videos are not straight forward and to the point and this guy is. I fontchave alot of time because winter is getting ready to set in. I recently rented this oversized garage to have my art, crafts, and work studio and i was really super excited to get moved in but after a few conversations with the landlord (which was not really t h e landlord landlord because he was subletting the garage space that was a detached garage) he pretty much admitted to me (in writing, who does that) that he knew the roof leaked before i moved in ,but i spent over $2000 to move in and after i told him i was not going to pay the original amount for rent and that i would pay $500 a month and find out about the leaks and such and i would continue to pay that until the problem is sorted out. Now i have decided i am going to fix the roof and not tell him so i can continue paying $500 a month 😂
How does this work when its like 40 degrees or less outside? You can still do this repair? How do you know that the leak isn't originating much further away and running down the home framing and dropping the water further away from the actual leak? My experience as a home owner who has had leaks tells me that it's not usually so cut and dry. Good video. 👍
im so confused about my neighbors roof. I'm a self employed woodworker and also a trained house inspector and I was helping them decide if they needed a new roof. The roof looks decent but the sheathing is totally saturated. At first I figured the mold was superficial and they just had interior air condensing, but when I checked again and touched the wet spots it was clear it was totally saturated with water. It gets worse as you get further down the roof.
I always use Lapping Tar to seal old Roofing Tacks that pushed through shingles and run a layer under shingles that I lifted up--this makes Shingles Seal back Down--you can put a few bricks over the shingles to hold them down properly...
I've stuck a piece of random shingle underneath the damaged part of the shingle and glued it in. It has to be a thin piece of shingle so it doesn't stick up too much. Sloppy nailing causes a lot of problems.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing that information, I am in hurricane territory, so always checking roof for problems but not a professional. Yes so much fly by night contractor soliciting like you said,….brittle roof replace all of it, thank you! a lot more confident on just repairs!
Good stuff.. there are always consequences for taking shortcuts or trying to be the fastest roofer alive!!! Most young roofers know what not to do, but the stress of being too slow and testosterone of being the bad ass makes the repair guy the hero! There is a fine medium where quality meets quantity and everyone is happy!
Very good video. Great camera work easy to follow explanation.. can you put a link to the thing on your ladder? I have a hard time not damaging my gutters.
Also when nails pull up which is due to poor ventilation, if the roof isn’t ventilated correctly, the humid air builds up and literally pushes the plywood upward, then when the pressure decreases due to weather, the roof settles back down leaving the nail up and it pushes through the shingle causing a nail pop. This also happens to sheet rock inside your walls, due to the same issue.
Excellent video, thank you, yes you are right, the thermal cycling of the nail works its way up through the shingles on top. What about using a nail set to drive the nail through the hole? That way you can lift up the shingle even less, and then use the sealer from the top
I wanted to thank you for your honesty, there aren't many roofer's that aren't all about the money and for that I commend you, you're a good man! Stay safe buddy! 😉👍🇺🇸
I’ve learned a lot over time plus your videos and I found the issue before you said it and I called it a pop as well but for sure that nail wicks the water perfectly into the house because of how lifting and that nail head isn’t flat down but I know to check inside the house for rusting on the nail tips as well which I think you mentioned on one of your videos before.
A nail punch might help? i forget name of the tool, but its basically a bigger nail punch with a bigger head. its basically a steal bar. itd probably be great for that.
If it's just the one, why not pry the nail out and geocel the hole? Chances are that nail will back out over time. May be rotted wood because of the leak, or nailed to the edge of the plywood.
Is it easier to do this investigation and repair work when the shingles are warm, hot or cold? With nail placement so critical, and imaging hundreds if not thousands of nails in an asphalt shingle roof, it is a wonder there are not more leaks than there are. Would like to see a video where a couple of shingles are replaced in the field, and how that work is addressed.
Generally, they're easier when they're warmer, but i've had some that split apart easy when they were cold. There are quite a few videos on the channel, showing repair work.
Those two troublesome nails being so close to each other: is it better to do one of those repairs before the other, ie the upper one or lower one first?
Super helpful thanks! Would you feel comfortable going over the shingle vertical seam without lifting them up? My roof job is S-job and i am finding a lot of nails very close to the seam with improper overlap......some are litteraly between shingle butts omfg
CNN says Americans will not do this kind of work I will give you credit for being a Russian your English is really good

They should call you the “honest roofer”. Good information thank you.
Great job!! Finally a roofer who takes pride I his work
It’s so common on roofs. Great video showing such an easy fix.
You can also use prybar on top of nail then hammer on pry areas. If you run into one or two nails more than likely there will be more.
nice tip with the sealer...not a full line but just dabs to keep the shingle down
Why? So it doesnt create a "water dam" under the shingle.
Thank you for telling me about this good sir. I’m not the handiest guy but I am aware of how often I’m dealing with scammy contractors. PacTool RS501 Roof Snake Tool or smilar to avoid prying worn shingles up too high for the hammer to get at it. A life saver.

There are no keyways on demential shingles, good video. You actually know what you're talking about.

Best to pull the nail; renail to its's side and fill the nail hole with sealer---otherwise you explained how to do this exceptionally well😬
Thank you for the tip and education. I have an elusive leak. Now I have other places to look with knowledge!
Excellent information there friend! It’s people like you that keeps me watching RUclips.
Airgun pressure is critical, use a water trap for hose moisture and don't nail too fast!!! Good video and happy holidays

Yes, they are not bendable ice-cold, so pick a warmer day. or bring a heat source with you.
if the angle for the hammer itself is too steep when hammering the nail tight to the roof, you can use a pin punch with the hammer.

Just did my roof with Maze double hot dipped galvanized ring shank nails. Mmm great product.
I must have been doing this too long I seen it as soon as you said about your tools not being in that area
How integral is that seal strip? It’s porous to let water shed from the shingle under, right? That’s why you did dabs of that geocell and not a line?

Hows come just the dabs of the sealer instead of a stripe mimicking the original seal length, sir?
Nice content. A little repeaty, but informative. Keep up the good work.

I usually get in the attic, find the leak and put a nail in it, then go on the roof and find the nail... Start removal of shingles, then repair.
