I just want to thank you for the commentary. That natural way of teaching, and the humility of acknowledging other good contractors and how to find them, is so helpful.
I love how well informed he is, whoever taught him did a really good job, you know you've taught someone perfectly when they're able to teach others correctly
Congratulations. A video worthy of watching. I skipped all the way to the end to see if you would seal down the shingles before you were finished. WELL DONE! DIY'ers, you can watch this video with confidence you will learn the proper way to replace shingles.
When you run a straight bead like that with no gaps in the bead the water will come in threw the key way back up over the underlying shingle leak or become trapped and rot the nails out
Really good diy video! Learned alot of smaller details to prevent additional installation damage. Thanks for taking time to show the less knowledgeable less experienced home owners.
Hey, good video. Very practical tips. Your camera person did an excellent job with the angles and your explanation was clear and simple to follow. Hope you are having a great day.
Hey, my man. Just wanted to thank you for this vid. I have a simple repair to do on my roof and was just looking to make sure I do it right. Very glad I found you. You're obviously a pro and you made everything very easy to understand. Again, thank you.
There are what I call Dockers'' videos and then there are real ones. Yours is one of the real ones. Thanks! UPDATE: Spent the day on the roof using your technique (wind storm damage). I didn't break one tab. I had a heat gun ready to go, but I didn't need/use it. Mine was laid on with staples but the flat bar seem to work. Needle nose pliers to grab the staples that almost come out helps. I am a bit sore (too much desk time) but feel pretty good about getting it done...right. Again Thanks!
Greetings from Germany. Technically good repair instructions. What I particularly like is the note that the shingles still have to be glued with bitumen adhesive. (Even if the roof is completely re-roofed). Many craftsmen don't do that and then people are surprised that the roof shows the first signs of damage after just 10-20 years .
Great video! I’ve got four shingles on my roof I need to replace here in Texas. Went down to Lowe’s and got a pack of Owens Corning Driftwood. Looking forward to getting them repaired now that I’ve watched this!
Great video thank you so much! One missing shingle here in TEXAS deff going to take this video for references clear and cut to the point great front camera skills 🤙🏼🇺🇸🦅
My home has 12 yr. old GAF Architectural shingles on a 2:12 roof with Tiger Paw underlayment. The bonding on lead edges of a 3 x 3' area have come loose, allowing lift and a small drip leak directly under the area in high wind/ rain conditions. Will roof sealant/ rebonding repair be enough on those shingles or would it need replacement. 2 contractors (who gave no focus to it) want to redo 240 sq ft. with new. Thank you for the video.
You make it look so easy. The shingles on our roof have been there (16) years and are tighter than a maximum security cell. How do you avoid scuffing asphalt shingles on a hot day? And what are you wearing on your shoes?
I see y'all repair mobile home roofs, well my mobile home has shingles on it and I thought about going over the top of it with Tin and I seen y'all on here and that you have pretty good knowledge of what I should do tin or keep it shingles original thanks for advice in advance!!!
Great..thanks. Why remove nails and loosen tabs three shingles up...I'm confused about that...would think just loosen tabs above the shingle being removed then remove the nails for the damaged shingle....please correct me if wrong.
Great Demo... I just lost a bunch of shingles, maybe 200 square feet if i add up all the missing sections..tar paper stayed put and is still in great shape, lost zero nails, just shingles, storm was insane, but only lost shingles on back sections... my roof is pretty old but shingles still are not brittle... i am hoping fema helps me out with supplies... I have done a few roofs over the years, but never repairs... I think i will start on the less damaged areas and hopefully after a few hours really get the hang of it... doing a little at a time will work best for me being in my 60's now... My roof is a 7/12 which is pretty steep, not falling off to me is my main concern...thanks for sharing
Thank this may be very useful for me. I got a list of things for my insurance company that need done, shingle for my garage roof wasn't one but it needs done. Got any estimate for all things that need fixed both insurance company issues as well as this. Guess I don't have to say but if it's possible for me to fix n save money I'm gonna. With your details explanation I think I may be able to handle. I'm not the biggest fan of heights but this roof is not that steep. Thank you once again. One question.... can I get the product you used for the finishing. Np1 caulking at Lowes or Home depot?
It could, that's why its important to use a strong calking like JTS-1 (by Mule Hide) to seal the shingle after the repair. www.mulehide.com/Roofing-Products/p/JTS1JointTerminationSealant
I have a lot of fun by watching this. I have a couple of naïve questions: why need to build it in this way, layer by layer. What is the purpose? How does rain go? Will flow through both the top and bottom of shingle?
I want to install a permanent access on the roof of my pump shed so that the pump can be pulled without having to do any roof work. This requires a hole above the pump that is at least 2 inches in diameter. What's my best option?
Awesome job showing how to repair shingle. I just went thru Hurricane Ian and had a few ridge shingles blow off. Can you use same process to replace ridges? The shingles are in the middle of the ridge and it seems hard to bend back the ridge shingles to get to nails. Or should I only use sealant?
Allowing the sun to heat the shingles can help reduce the strength from the tar strip making it easier to insert your trowel under the shingle: my recommendation would be to start later in the day if possible when the sun is at its peak.
I know nothing about roofing but I know water. Is it normal practice to use straight lines of caulk under the shingle? Looks like a water damming risk.
The hard part is separating the shingles. They can be very hard to separate. Using a trowel, as shown in the video, is a good choice, but sometimes they still won't come apart. Using a heat gun to soften up the adhesive (especially in colder temps), can make the separation easier.
Good job. One thing about new shingles, you can't trust the glue strip to hold down the shingles. I always use roofing cement on the leading edges just ike you did. They used staples on my roof shingles, it's a royal pain removing them to replace a damaged shingle strip. I always use roofing nails to replace new shingles. Thanks for the video. By the way I'm almost 74 years old and still repairing my own roof every spring when we get high winds here.
There was no real purpose for him to loosen those shingles. Loosening the shingles on the left and right side of the damage shingles can be a step you skip.
I just want to thank you for the commentary. That natural way of teaching, and the humility of acknowledging other good contractors and how to find them, is so helpful.
I love how well informed he is, whoever taught him did a really good job, you know you've taught someone perfectly when they're able to teach others correctly
😂😂
Best 3-tab repair video, thanks!
That's not even three tab
Best tutorial on the RUclips on how to do this.

Loved this video brother, you showed lots of knowledge and experience. The way you explained this and broke it down couldn’t have been better 👍
Hey, good video. Very practical tips. Your camera person did an excellent job with the angles and your explanation was clear and simple to follow. Hope you are having a great day.
Awesome, thank you!
Great gift to the rest of us. Love your asides about 4 vs. 6 nail contractors and use of math. Thanks!
Hey, my man. Just wanted to thank you for this vid. I have a simple repair to do on my roof and was just looking to make sure I do it right. Very glad I found you. You're obviously a pro and you made everything very easy to understand. Again, thank you.
I need to replace some shingles this weekend. Never done it before. I appreciate your excellent video.
How'd it go I gotta repair too

Thanks for taking the time and providing the detail that is usually missing from other roof repair videos. Well done!
Glad it was helpful!
Great explanation and demo.
Helped me repair 1 damaged shingle around a bathroom vent.
Its sealed and rain tested.
Thank you.
Glad it helped!

Lost a few shingles to hurricane Fiona. Have watched about a dozen of these videos this morning. Yours was a the best. Thank you!
You are so welcome be safe out there.
Wooo right down the road. Great craftsmanship

Good luck! Thanks for the comment!
Nice clear & concise explanation and demonstration.....keep up the nice work!
Glad it was helpful!
GREAT video!! So many good tips. Using a trowel is a must! Thanks...just got off the roof using one after watching this.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome video and instructions. Appreciate details and information.
Just a heads up never good to put caulking across keyway. Will make water travel sideways. Right along the top of that bead. 👌
Very professional work ! Thanks for this great video !
Good video, very informative. Wish had workers like u in ND!! Don't know who can trust-especially me being widow. Get taken alot.
Gracias por compartir tus comentarios
Amazing video and techniques 👌🏽❣️ Thank you 😊
Great video thank you so much! One missing shingle here in TEXAS deff going to take this video for references clear and cut to the point great front camera skills 🤙🏼🇺🇸🦅
Glad it was helpful!
Ok, those boots got grip- Where did u get them????
Is it advisable or not to seal the previous nail holes in the underlayment?
If you are doing this in colder weather, will it make the shingles more brittle?

Exellent video, you did a great job. Congratulations! I was looking for something like this Thank you
Just installed 2 shingles, worked great!
Great to hear!
Hi...Steve! I'm so excited to know you're in Georgia! I'm in Montezuma ga. When we ready to get a new roof done, I'll have you in my first list! 👍
Thank you!
Very well done video. You are a natural on camera.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for your video.
Question: What size of nail for shingle? I heard you said 1-1/4"? Is it a code for all states?
Excellent video. Lots of information, easy going style. I feel like I learned a few things. Thanks.
I like your approach. Nice and easy. My problem as a DIY, I rush. Great video
Thanks for watching!
You make it look so easy. The shingles on our roof have been there (16) years and are tighter than a maximum security cell.
How do you avoid scuffing asphalt shingles on a hot day? And what are you wearing on your shoes?
😅. Hes5 using a roofing roof safe sandals.
Thanks man it was really important I’m not had idea before how fix it ,now I know how, thanks again.
Happy to help!

extreme video as for me, because I can tell that a person knows his trade and business around it. Thank you))
Great Job Steve!
Good job, I like your explanation starts to the point
Is there any tricks out there to help pry really sticky shingles apart that are aged a bit??
Great..thanks.
Why remove nails and loosen tabs three shingles up...I'm confused about that...would think just loosen tabs above the shingle being removed then remove the nails for the damaged shingle....please correct me if wrong.
This was really good only question is are you on every job you sale making sure your crew is doing 6 nails per shingle lol.
thamks for taking your time to share this video it save me money I realy appreciated
Clear and concise, great job. Only thing I still don't know is exactly what calk to use, I'll figure that out. Oh and I subscribed and liked.
use Geocel

Great how-to video!! Thx
Thanks 👍 you are an excellent teacher.
great video. How do you repair a shingle that is next to flashing?
Thanks for this incredible video, for the final finish, do we use a roof ciment or just a roof sealant?
Good information 👍. Wonder how much is this little fix! Probably toooo much for the work. But overall he knows what to do
Thank you so much for a quick run down of the repair of a roof, 100% helpful!
Glad it helped!
Can you do how to do a vent flashing replacement
Thanks for the comment!
I like your Cougar's Paw shoe. Well worth the money. Have a great day n stay cool.
Great repair, the trowel tip is huge.
Simple and to the point..... Excellent!
Glad you liked it

Np1 caulking at Lowes or Home depot?
Doesn’t 6 nails always have a nail on the splice of the next row….creating a potential rusted out nail that might be a roof leak?
It could, that's why its important to use a strong calking like JTS-1 (by Mule Hide) to seal the shingle after the repair.

I have a lot of fun by watching this. I have a couple of naïve questions: why need to build it in this way, layer by layer. What is the purpose? How does rain go? Will flow through both the top and bottom of shingle?
Yes, the water will flow over the top shingle and past the bottom
I like your teaching, for us DIY's
Glad you like them!
Super informative. Thank you.
Nice video! What would you recommend for water seeping in through rusty nails but the shingles are still in tact?
Gracias por ese Gran tutorial de cómo reparar el techo de la casa!!
Good job! Clear and easy.
Glad it helped!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
I want to install a permanent access on the roof of my pump shed so that the pump can be pulled without having to do any roof work. This requires a hole above the pump that is at least 2 inches in diameter. What's my best option?
Never seen a trowel used to break the tar line, does it always work that sweet?
If the shingles are 5 years old or older, it works like a charm
Awesome job showing how to repair shingle. I just went thru Hurricane Ian and had a few ridge shingles blow off. Can you use same process to replace ridges? The shingles are in the middle of the ridge and it seems hard to bend back the ridge shingles to get to nails. Or should I only use sealant?
Gracias from Texas
You are welcome
Great explanation. Same process for buckled shingles?
Yes, absolutely
Great video!! Thank you 💪💪💪
Cuanto se cobra .por una reparacion como esa ..gracias maestro saludos Dios lo Bendiga
How much do you charge for the repair in your area?
Answered all the questions I wanted answers to!
My shingles are really stuck down/together. Any advice on getting them separated. Trying to get the trowel in, literally pushes me backwards lol
Allowing the sun to heat the shingles can help reduce the strength from the tar strip making it easier to insert your trowel under the shingle: my recommendation would be to start later in the day if possible when the sun is at its peak.
outstanding informative and positive .Thanks
Our pleasure!
I know nothing about roofing but I know water. Is it normal practice to use straight lines of caulk under the shingle? Looks like a water damming risk.
Should use dabs of geocell caulk rather than straight lines. That way, any water that may get under shingle, can exit at bottom.
Never caulk across the whole shingle, creates a damn if water gets behind it, I would put little dabs of caulk, maybe 4 dabs
Great idea
Informative. Thanks !
The hard part is separating the shingles. They can be very hard to separate. Using a trowel, as shown in the video, is a good choice, but sometimes they still won't come apart. Using a heat gun to soften up the adhesive (especially in colder temps), can make the separation easier.
Drywall knives are perfect . 8, 10, 12, 14 inch knives cut thru tar perfect.
Well explained and concise
Thank you!
Good job. One thing about new shingles, you can't trust the glue strip to hold down the shingles. I always use roofing cement on the leading edges just ike you did. Glad you enjoyed it
Do you come to Mobile Alabama ?
Good tutorial, thank you.
You are welcome!
Any recommendation on a sealant available at Home Depot or Lowes so I don't have to order from some special place?
Normally the more money you send on roof sealant the better it is.
I use JTS-1 or NP-1
Great job! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
What adhesive do you recommend that I can get from Home Depot or Lowes?
Normally the more money you send on roof sealant the better it is.
Attention nails should go where nail zone is at not above- just an observation-your doing a great job
Thanks for the comment!
Why do you loosen the shingles right and left of the damaged shingle?
There was no real purpose for him to loosen those shingles. Loosening the shingles on the left and right side of the damage shingles can be a step you skip.
Boots were tearing that roof up... I recommend K-Swiss shoes, and not letting your feet slide when it's hot... Great educational video
His wearing cougar paws look them up for made for roofing
Great point!
Cougar paws sir, that's the way to go.
Amazing video, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks, learned a lot!
