This is so much better than covering the entire area in a huge tarp. Large tarps catch wind easily and leave hundreds of nail holes for more water intrusion.

First things first. Examine the damaged shingle. Ask whether other shingles require an overlay. That precipitates extending the tarp to the top of the roof.

I used rubberized washer screws for tarp so far so good with drill

Another problem is you're nailing directly to the roof under the tarp and a lot of times an adjuster will have to come up and remove that and you will have to retarp it

That's fine if you know where the damage is. But remember a lot of people who do the rooftops they're not skilled to know roof construction. So if they go ahead and put it on that means if there is another leak they have to come back out.

I've been roofing close to 54 yrs. I've been to every roofing seminar in the roofing industry. This young roofer explains the basics very well. I like this video. However, I'm going to contradict the nailing part. Most shingles are tested with four nails for certification. In high wind areas six nails are usually required by city code. My point is that six nails are no better than four nails. Let me bravely go one step further. The main reason for the nails is to keep the shingles from sliding down the roof. GAF Roof manufacturer has a video with a shingle with no nails to hold them down. Thirty years ago, I read an engineering report stating the same finding. GAF, ARE ROOFING NAILS OVERRATED, video. Why not just replace the damaged shingle? It’s easier than installing a tarp unless there is a large area of roof damage.

NAILS?! I don't think so, Tim. You could at least put them under the shingles in the nail line then tie a couple ropes to the bottom down to the ground.

Thank this may be very useful for me. I got a list of things for my insurance company that need done, shingle for my garage roof wasn't one but it needs done. Got any estimate for all things that need fixed both insurance company issues as well as this. Guess I don't have to say but if it's possible for me to fix n save money I'm gonna. With your details explanation I think I may be able to handle. I'm not the biggest fan of heights but this roof is not that steep. Thank you once again. My home has 12 yr. old GAF Architectural shingles on a 2:12 roof with Tiger Paw underlayment. The bonding on lead edges of a 3 x 3' area have come loose, allowing lift and a small drip leak directly under the area in high wind/ rain conditions. Will roof sealant/ rebonding repair be enough on those shingles or would it need replacement. 2 contractors (who gave no focus to it) want to redo 240 sq ft. with new. Thank you for the video.

What handman service taught you how to be a roofer. Are you wearing cougar paws? Wheres your hatchet, supar bar, and tool bag. Only thing you did close to right was use a trowel but wrong o e. Bull nose baby, keeps from punching holes. And stop lifting the shingles so high your just messing up tje ones above it

Why didn't you just change the shingle and keep gittin it? That roof doesn't need replacing.

Awesome demonstration. I have roof problems myself. This is a great simple way to fix a temporary problem if you have a solution not far away.

why does it need a new roof when about 15 shingles would fix it? this is why insurance is getting out of control, for the same reason medical costs are. company practices are to charge as much as they can instead of diagnose and perform spot repairs, a roof like this should live a life of at least 20 years. i appreciate knowing how to tarp a smaller area effectively though.
