I was a 727 engineer and First Officer for UPS during this timeframe. We only had 113 seats because of the mid section galley but it was a comfortable conversion. We mostly flew vacationers on the weekend but also included sports teams and the White House press group. The Rolls Royce tay engines were quiet and more efficient which was needed as we often took off at max takeoff weight with a full flight. I miss those days as it was my only passenger experience having flight instructed and currently flying cargo my whole career. Those interiors appeared new and were nice. We used contract flight attendants.
It has different engines? Is this the reason for the different looking #2 engine air intake? I mean that bulbous shape on top of the intake where the original 727 intake was straight.
@@joeybakula308 They were not as profitable as flying freight. Originally, UPS planned for interchangeable interiors, but each aircraft has minute differences causing the interior to be custom to the aircraft. UPS first had to repo the aircrafts to where its interiors were, and ended up keeping them in passenger configuration. Passenger operation was profitable, but freight have higher returns. Hence in 2001, upon completion of the last contract, pax ops were sacked.
as an avgeek i heard of this and was glad to see this BTS video very neat i actually live in SATX where IIRC these babies were reengined/worked on a lot
We had these operate out of MCO when I worked there. Never got to see them in action, though, since they operated on the weekend picking up cruise ship passengers, I believe it was.
Douglas O'Brien, I flew to Cancun & back; passengers both ways. We started off in Louisville, then flew @ 10,000 feet to Cincinnati for international customs (very quick flight), and then Cancún. Drop off & pick up more; top off fuel & liquid for the toilet. FUN FACT: the BLUE toilet liquid everyone uses is GREEN in Mexico for some reason LOL.
You guys need to bring the passenger airline back. No need to add the seats or anything this time - sitting in between boxes of cargo = still better than flying commercial today
UPS ought to return to this biz model with their triple 7's, definitely not their md-11's though. Their 74's might be able to pull it off. All first class, no coach... c'mon UPS, bring the pax service back.
Are your 727 out there working anymore. We all the re-engineering I would figure they would be. Worked the ramp in fresno in the 90s And the 727 was always my favorite.
+stitch16261 - Current FAA regs won't allow UPS to repurpose idle aircraft for passenger use anymore. It's a very cool video and a very cool idea, though. The time lapse of this video represents about 4 hours to convert a freighter to a passenger carrier for weekend use.

Mike james, yep good times. These were great as fly weeks for management. Sorry if you were bumped. 👍🇺🇸

@@AbcAbc-ox6pg yes, those were Rolls Tay engines. Quieter and more fuel efficient
Why did this service stop?

Or United Passenger Service
I was thinking United People Service.

Wow this brings back memories, I remember working the ramp for these flights here in Philadelphia, they flew for Apple vacations, the good ole days!

I wish they still did passenger flights.

I remember this we were lousy at flying people...
I wish they could have the passenger ups back only for the b747 b767 b757 and md-11
they could make money even on a flight back to the origin airport! Let’s be real enthusiasts would eat that up!!
FedEx used to allow employees as passengers on their planes. Until some lunatic tried to kill the flight crew with an axe...
Is the meal good?
In Oz we had two 727 100 QC's. in the 80's. Very labour intensive.
Totally awesome!
According to Shazam, this song is called Armenia Allegro Feroce.
I flew them back in 1994 from Pittsburgh to Punta Cana...wasn’t bad at all.

UPS has never flown the 777. FedEx does, however.
@Gibran Bedra no air carrier in the United States is allowed to fly passengers in a MD-11
Bring back the passenger operations

We do not own any 727s any longer.
UPS Airlines sorry. I knew that, but did they all get scrapped or sold off.
At first I thought seats and bulkheads were brown to match the UPS branding.
I am so glad that's not a thing anymore
amazing
que género musical es?
What musical genre is it?
classic music
Wouldn’t it have been easier to just put people in boxes and skip the whole labor intensive cargo to passenger conversion?
Erin Sherman that was the problem...
They scrapped it. Too many boxes arrived damaged.
The natural evolution of air travel from luxury to conmodity.
who knew?
nice is that plane still in service
It is a nice plane. We do not own any 727s any longer.

Imagine if they did this with the MD-11.😅
Holy crap
I doubt regs would allow this these days...government wont let us have any fun wah 😭
This exists today. Similar type of equipment change was mad to evacuate Americans from China.
This actually happened?
Yup, and I flew it back in the late '90s. It was great.
Why don't they make this a reality?
They did back in the late '90s but it didn't *(puts sick shades on) take off* as well as their cargo service 😂
I'm confused, all I said I wished that UPS would allow some passengers to fly with cargo.
