I have been enjoying your videos and in this one I see that your were a Corpsman. I was too (1965-69). I had a lot of interesting times and a lot of horrible times, like being loaned to the FMF in the Vietnam War. I am sure everything has changed drastically since my D/C. I arrived back back home still an E3. I was probably the only returning corpsman that was an E3. Other sailors couldn't believe I was walking around with medals and still only an E3. I didn't push it as I just wanted to get out before they sent me back. I also enjoyed the ironary of returning an E3 with medals. I eventually got E4 before I got out :-) Keep up these informative videos.
I went in as a Sonarman in 84. I LOVED it. Even though I got out in 4, it was the most open rating at the time. After I got out and the Cold War ended, the rating closed up and it went much slower. Great video shipmate.
I thought shipmate was an insult

I served 12 years in the "Nav" and the uniforms these days are very confusing, and even in the ratings system.
I enlisted in the Navy in 1968 for 4 years. I was tested in boot camp at Great Lakes, IL. and because of some electronics back ground and extremely good hearing was designated as SA Sonar Tech. My First ship was the heavy cruiser USS Newport News CA-148 the only sonar type gear they had was a Fathometer, so they sent me from OE Division straight to the Mess Decks, while there I took out courses for Seaman and PO3 as well as Electronic Tech PO3, I passed the test and made Third class ET in the first increment, I then did the same for PO 2 and ET 2 , and was an ETN2 with only 18 months in the Navy. So if you work hard it can be done. I was put in charge of ET Seaman and Third class ET's coming out of "A" and "C" schools. Before I got out in 1972 I passed the First Class and Chief test but decided to go ahead and get out before I could put it on ( time in grade requirements ). it can be done guys and now gals but you have to have drive.
Thanks for your service! also awesome story that can apply to the new guys.
You passed the first class and chief test? No such test! You have to make 1st class, before you can take the chiefs test. Retired GMC (SW)
When did you enlist Chief? That's the way I remembered it, they were offering those tests and if you passed you could re-enlist and they would send you to knife and fork school then pilot training for helicopters, I almost did that but the life expectancy of a helicopter pilot at that time was only a few weeks.
As soon as I cut some weight I’m enlisting. Hopefully I can meet you some day and thank you in person for the awesome advice your videos offer
I joined in 64 as an STG (SURFACE SONAR SYSTEM TECH) - there are operators, techs then system techs! In 65 meritoriously promoted to PO3, made chief in 71 after 7 years and 4 months during the Vietnam era. ST, AQ and either IT or IS were the top three in 70. Went to reserves, graduated college in 76. I had 52 weeks of school before going to my first ship, more school between ships to be systems tech. Study hard, the tests were easy. I missed only 11 questions on the chief's test in things I did not study or know about. NICKY MGTV is probably the best place if you are thinking of joining and want to know what moves because some rates just don't promote.
Fastest advancing rates are IT-S, CT-N, and ET (nuclear) (assuming not STAR reenlist).
STAR reenlist oddly makes it VERY hard for EM and MM nukes to get E-5 the old fashion way.
You forgot OS
What’s IT-S
Ghostx141x Gaming a special IT program not your regular internet maintenance guy
As an MM(nuke), I made E-5 right at my 4 year point. I didn't reenlist, I was 6 and out. What sucks about being a nuke is that everybody knows how fast you make rate and they hate your guts for it. You go to Personnel, they treat you like shit. You go to Medical and they treat you like shit. When I was M-division's supply-PO, the guys in Supply treated me like shit. Gets pretty tiresome. What really sucks is that when you have a beef with somebody in another division and your nuke supervision finds out, they take the other guy's side and treat their own nukes like shit. That's why I got out, we have NOBODY on our side.
As an STG, I was able to make E-5 in less than 2.5 years. Most tech rates can get you advanced quickly to E-5, but going beyond that can be challenging (but certainly not impossible if you try hard enough). So honestly, try to find rates where you're working on stuff that you enjoy. Me, I'm a techy so I wanted something tech-based that I could put on my resume. Originally I wanted to be an IT, but they didn't have that available. I had to go to MEPS like 3-4 times before I was able to pick ANYTHING because they didn't have ANY rates available at the time. Eventually, they presented me with an STG 6-year contract, and they didn't even know what it was lol. I decided that even though it's not the rate I initially wanted, I'd be going to San Diego for school (which I had a lot of which is why I had a 6 year contract instead of 4) and it is tech-based so I'd be able to put it on my resume as experience (Post-Navy Me is laughing so hard at this), I'll give it a shot and signed up to be an STG. Looking back on it, I have some regrets, but overall it was a great experience and I met so many wonderfully unique people during my time in.
TheAndySan ET-Nuclear xD. They pretty much gave us rank. You can get up to E-5 pretty much before hitting your first ship amd E-6 ismt too hard either...
As a glow worm wire biter; I made E-5 in 2 yrs. E-6 in 4 with a waiver. I knew a guy who made chief in under 7yrs. Those some of the best and worst years of my life.
TheAndySan I signed an 8 year Corpsman contract.
Edited by Andy S. What was your regrets??? I initially wanted to be a corpsman but they didn’t have it and I wanted to leave. I was interested in STG already so I picked it
Thanks for your input! I just signed up as an STG so i was poking around online to see people's experiences.
I liked the unedited version better but this works too 👌
Nice vid. I swore in today and picked AECF as my job.
Thomas Dahman hopefully you get FC instead of ET the advancement for ET is trash after 3rd class
Do u have PS4 or Xbox
What’s your ship date?
When I was in MA DC FC and MM were fastest going rates even HT
When I was in the Navy in the 80's & 90's, the two best rates to be in were nuclear power (NUC) and gas turbin. I knew two people in both those rates that made Chief in less than 8 years. It was crazy to see them in their dress uniforms with one red hashmark. I'm sure they both went on to make Master Chief.
Do they still let people assigned to Diego Garcia retire early ?
Do they still have Pass but not Advance points? Meritorious advance? Can you still save vacation time? My friend had 15 months saved up and retired 15 months early on his twenty. Retired on active duty duty.

the reason I disliked this Video is because you never answered the question of the video. you spoke a lot about what goes into the advancement exams, but never answered the question which advances the fastest. True it depends on what the needs of the Navy are at the time, but there are some rates that increase the fastest just based on the rate. For Example Nukes (ETs, EMs, and MMs) all advance really fast because they start at E3 and at the end of the A-school they are advanced to E-4 if they pass the dash for cash (as we called it when I finished EM A School back in 95) and signed on for one more year and could immediately advance to E-5 on the very next exam (no wait period). it is possible (and has been done) to make Chief (E-7) in as little as 6 years, Another reason its quick to advance is because the retention rate is insanely low (which is why nukes re enlistment bonus is one of the highest in the Navy) and the requirements to become a nuke is one of the toughest so original enlistment is low, leaving a lot of spots open for advancement.
also the Navy band makes rank insanely fast, also Seals make rank rather quickly.
again you gave a lot of info as to what goes into the advancement but never really answered the question of your own video, you could of answered the question in a general format because despite all the info you put out there are rates that just advance quickly due to the nature of the rate. I know specifically about Nukes because I was a Nuke EM, I served from may 1995 to may 2001. I went to boot camp in Great lakes, A School and power school in Orlando (I was there when the last Recruit Division graduated from there), Prototype in Charleston, SC, and served aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72..
ChurchLD yeah but as a nuke you're not looking at it from the much broader sense OTHER than nuke. I did include the answer you wanted which was the table of the advancement results. This channel is to empower people to make advancement knowing what goes in to advancement. If the advancement is 75% yet that sailor doesn't do anything on their part to actually make rank then what?! I set them up for failure. Many nukes don't have the same worries of advancement so I think you aren't able to totally relate because it is so easy for you guys.
I actually can relate. Just because you could advance really fast as a nuke doesn't mean you did. Once I got advanced to E-4 at the end of '95, I didn't make E-5 until Dec of 2000, although I did get Fructed that June. The wait time from E-4 to E-5 at the time was 2 years. The Competition was tough. As part of the reenlistment bonus at the time, you were automatically promoted to E-5, so that filled a lot of billets, so if you didn't reenlist it could take a bit to build up to the points to advance. Also thanks in part to the Non nukes we did have in the department, nukes saw just how slow advancement could be. We did have MMs that ran the Emergency Diesel Generators, they were a part of the department but were not nukes and advanced really slow (there was not one who made rank the entire 4+ years I was on the Lincoln). Also keep in mind that until 1999 Nukes had to take conventional Advancement exams, they didn't have separate exams for the rates. There was a lot of questions about degaussing on the exams and nukes never did anything with any of the degaussing. So unless you could get your hands on that information, you were taking the test blind.
Also at the time the Navy band advanced the fastest out of any of the rates. I went to boot camp with one that started out as a E-6 right after boot camp and come to find out that was the norm.
Also they started CAPPING the last year and a half I was in, so you could advance with out even having to take the advancement exams at all or even waiting the required time. In that way, air dales were advancing even faster than Nukes. I'm not sure if CAPPING is still in practice today, but at the time it really upset a lot of non Air Dale rates because the Air dales were the only ones getting CAPPED.
also to the point of Corpman getting advanced really slowly, at the time they were really slow in getting advanced, due to the reasons you stated, non of them were getting out so there wasn't any billets for them.
and Lastly None of my comments were aimed at any disrespect toward you or your channel. In fact as a Navy Vet I want to thank you for carrying on the traditions that I and many, MANY before me and after me have set.
Happy Veterans day.
@@churchld2524 Your explanation is better. I served 21yrs combined...3yrs active duty, 16yrs Naval Reserve, even 1yr IRR and the Navy's advancement exams and advancements are complicated. It's the same in the reserves too. We had our own quotas but the exam was the same as active duty's exams. It depends on how many billets needs to be filled, what's the retention rate, turnover, even location. Depending on your rate, some cycles your rate can be 100% manned and the very next cycle it can be 15%. I'm an ABH, and my rate experiences this ALL THE TIME! I was a non-designated Airman when i first joined the reserves and i worked with the AE's. By the time i tried to take the AE3 exam(around 1993-94), THE ENTIRE RATE WAS CLOSED! 3rd class to Chief(even in the reserves) was overmanned and closed! The TAR's(Training Active Reservists) and the ESO made me take my old rating(ABH) exam and i made 3rd right away, then i made 2nd and the multiple was 89. Then the rate i was trying to cross over to(AE)opened up and they started promoting AEC's so timing plays a role too. When i was on active duty, i knew guys who had been in 20+yrs and couldn't make Chief and guys who made Chief in 8yrs. My ship, we had a Senior Chief who made it in 11. Also, depending on your rate, sea time helps too, especially when you go for Chief, Warrant, or LDO. That's my take on it. At the end of the day, WE ARE ALL SAILORS! It's a unique fraternity, especially if you been to sea and made deployments, whether it's 1 or 15 cruises, or serving 3 or 30yrs, everybody has played some kind of role in keeping the Navy going and will continue to do so.
I have been out for many years, active from 1972 to 1978 ET2. At that time ET did not make rank fast you came out of schools E4 push button ( I hated that saying. I would return saying pass that fucking school it ain't no push button.) E4 for almost 4 years until eligible for E5. Then just before leaving take the E6 test, your set back if you don't re-up. I did not join for advancement I wanted to work in electronics which I still do, almost 50 years now.
The reason why nukes get alto of money and rank fast because one...it’s a high demand job and two no one is joining or staying in the navy like they use to
hey nicc, i joined dep, i wanted to do aviation, but i failed my depth perception test. good thing i had picked backup jobs that i would enjoy and i ended up getting IT, A school is 24 weeks and has guaranteed e-4 upon graduation, id say that making petty officer 2nd class isnt too bad for having arrived at boot camp only 8 months earlier
mayonnaise man word of advice I'm bout to finish IT A school. If you're an e3 when you go in then yes you will go to e4 which is third class upon graduation. If you're not e3 you will still have to wait the amount of time between the ranks but when it's time for you to hit e4 you will get e4 without taking the advancement exam. Just something that wasn't explained fully to me when I joined that I thought I might share . Good luck don't stress about a school it's easy just apply yourself.
Shoot, I'm an EM and our advancement is a damn rollercoaster ride lol. You have got to love getting done taking the exam and everybody is asking how you did "shit, I don't know, we will find out in 3 months lol".
It's crazy how advancement can be and I have seen my fair share of changes since I have been in.

Well just finished 9C here, waiting on orders.
anything with ct in front is pretty good since you make so much more as a civvy. Also, most (i think it's all actually) get auto e-4 after a school
Hey made HM2 in 3 years got capped to e-5 while on an IA. Technically 3.5 but got backpaid to 3. Hell I made hm3 first time up. First eval was Non observed after that I always had EPs. Take on collateral tasks and volunteer and take college classes or better yourself in your off time.
You can make rank you have to work hard go above and beyond and don’t complain. Most people bitch about their chain and there is a time for that but not all the time.
Well the first moves up from E-1 to E-3 are automatic based on tine unless you really do something stupid.
Toni O'hara college credits before you join can help too. I got 51 credits and I could go in at E3 to start......what happens after that I have no idea
I swore in yesterday. Got advanced electronic computer field with a guarentee E4 promotion when u finish school.
Ayyy I got sworn in 1/24/20 I leave June 30 2020!!!
Crooklyn sucks still have to wait a year and 3 months if you get out of boot camp as an E2 to make E4

Does the navy give sailors study guides for their advancement exams? say like Aircrew, does the navy give you a guide to study?
Check the bibliography’s
I'm signed as an aircrewman but I just got offered a $22k bonus to leave sooner as SECF, not sure if I should.
How is Logistic Specialists? I wanted to do ABH or BM, but only ls was available, I was told it's great but idk
I'm in Corps school right now and there's like 60+ new sailors coming in weekly.
What are the customs and courtesies when interacting with officers and NCO’s in the Navy? I was in the Army and my PSG, who was prior service in the navy, said somethings were different in the Navy.
Austin Cartwright salute officers and do not salute nco
I got a job with the seabees. CM is what I signed for and she said advancement has always been good with the seabees.
I also got a job with seabees. My brother is A Corpsman and he told me advancement is really slow for The Seabees.
SeaBees advancement is super slow because they are cutting down the battalions. Drawing back ground ops means they are kicking seabees out.
OS's ..but i cant stand my job....My happiness and peace is not worth quick-rank
Dennis Banks I try to stress this but people joining think it’s a rat race to master chief and don’t realize how this impacts yours life.
I WAS A FIRECONTROLMAN AND MADE E5 IN 18 MONTHS / THENYOU HAVE TO WAIT LONG TIME FOR MORE
wulfe man jesus
When I was in as an ET, all FCs had to do was sign the exam and they got advanced. It was because the sea/shore rotation was a ridiculous 5/2 (now 5/3) so they took that advanced training and hit the door running. Now the sea/shore rotation is 4/3 for career sailors (E-6 and above with time in), so it's a little more manageable... And then you have some that just plain luck out. My son is an FC, with time in, E-6, looking at LDO or at least early promote, homeported in Hawaii, collecting that sea pay and single.
@Alisha Freeman, most FCs make E-4 right out of A school. FC is pretty much the same as any other electronics job nowadays. It's all black box replacement, but in school, they teach you to troubleshoot down to the component so you know the correct black box to replace. If you like to blow stuff up, this is a good rate. I was an ET, where's the fun in repairing a radio?
wulfe man how was life like being FC?
@Alisha Freeman not sure but the school is 1 year long
@NICKY MGTV - Do you by any chance of no how the Navy would credit Vocational Schooling? Is it by Credit Hours or by Classroom Hours?
Special forces make rank fast, i.e. Seals, from what I hear.
Nukes make rank fast and always will. I made E-6 in 5 years as a nuke mechanic. You get E-4 after A-school which is 3 months long after boot camp for mechanics (MMs) and electricians (EMs) and 6 months long for ETs. If you STAR reenlist (can do it as soon as your 1.5 or 2 year point, can't remember) you automatically get E-5. I didn't STAR, wanted to do my initial 6 and get out. Took the E-5 exam like 5 times before I made it. Since most people get out after 6 or 8 years the availability for E-6 is much higher. I had decent PT scores, EP evals as an E-5 for every eval cycle, and made E-6 the first time I took the eval test.
captain murph Yeah I was a ET-Nuke. Pretty much gave us everything up to first. ET types just dont stay in longer than their first term lol
Yep, ex-nuc MM ac-drop here; Push button third, Made 2nd in prototype (before even saw the ocean), still had Time In Service waver for going up for 1st. Would have made 1st increment 1st time up, but got in trouble. Still made it faster than most. Selection board eligible for Chief 12 times, never selected Oh well, can't have everything.
Hey, since all you guys are Nukes, I'm shipping out to basic in a month, but I still can take the Nuke Test(sorry don't remember what it's called) and swap from IT to Nuke, but I also know that being a Nuke is difficult, should I take it or stick to IT, I think it will be really interesting to work as and I know schooling is intense, but I believe that I can make it, my recruiter really wants me to switch to it, I've just been wanting some input from people in that position whether I should or not.
Went STG, afraid if went nuke I would glow in the dark. I think our navy does a better job of shielding because I've never heard of a nuke suing the navy for radiation poisoning. Would love to have a gander at your E-5 test. Got trained in nuclear weps EOD since STs fire ASROC which can be nukes. E-6 in 4 years 4 months; CPO in 7 years 4 months, I think I made the right choice for me. No e-8 due to politics so transferred to reserves and graduated college.
Sooo what jobs in the navy has the highest advancement rate? Lol I clicked on this to know jobs that have highest advancement rate...
Just so folks know. Being a RATED BM means, you don't do manual labor. You become a supervisor. Even as a designated striker means more supervisory than a paint chipper. When I made BMSN, I never got my hands dirty again.

Isaiah Lopez usually that is handled after A School. After your A school you can choose to go to a marine command and get sent to FMF school (i cant remember the Corpmen name. RPs call it CREST).

Just swore in! Just bought a shovel and headstone in preparation for being a nuke
Any NUCLEAR power rating hand's down ! That's why you have to take a "special test" at the recruiter's office before enlisting so you won't waist their time. You better be VERY GOOD in Math or don't bother asking. As for other ratings; if you believe it's a combination of test score, time in rate, performance evaluations, etc.. then your delusional. You will not get promoted until they are ready to give it to you (et al.). Also remember that in some ratings even the study material is classified so you can't take it home to study and if you are at a location (duty station) without access to those materials you are still out of luck.
He not telling me what I want to hear 😂
OS. 100% 3rd class. 100% 2nd class since the beginning of time.
Matt Aaron yes but first drops off drastically. You have to consider this rather than short term goal. Also transferability to outside world
Whatever your rating, study hard for the tests. The better you do the more likely you'll get an early advancement. Also if you serve in combat you can get promotions w/o taking the test. I made QM2 in 2-1/2 years and QM1 in 3-1/2 years. And then I got the F out.

Bob Shaw it’s a Martin acoustic. I try to play but not much. We do a training that is similar to the marine corps bootcamp for 8 weeks after we become a corpsman and do hikes etc to acclimate to their culture.

“No step on snek” patch?
Which rate makes rank the fastest?? Any of them, as long as you are female (and have good durable kneepads). Being a veteran & having served, this is FACT.
Hey Nicky, I want to be a naval aviator, but I have glasses. Will they allow me to fly?
Following
what
They give you eye surgery
The important part is qualifying.
As long as your vision is correctable then you're good to go.
I don't know about today, as I got out in 2001, but they used to let you fly as NFOs
Can you do a vlog about green card holder coming into the armed forces ..
Gred Samonte YES
Green card holders can get in and choose from most job based on your asvab score. Only ones you won't be able to get are those that require security clearance.
Andre K yes but with the new POTUS., are there any changes with immigrants who wants to join the armed force or any advice
Gred Samonte I have a green card, I took the asvab not too long ago and I'm waiting to go do the physical in a week or so. If there was a problem the recruiter would've told me right then and there. Best advice is to go see one.
Yes you can but I think with the new POTUS some new policy started a week ago. I’m currently in DEP. Went to MEPS, swore in, got a job, everything. My ship date was supposed to be next month (Nov). Got a call from my Recruiter offering me to leave Monday. Accepted and was getting ready to go to bootcamp. Couple days ago my Recruiter called me and told me there’s a new policy where green card holders have to wait until their clearance is ‘completed’ before they can ship to bootcamp and usually once the clearance has been sent in, you’re eligible to go to bootcamp. Mind you my job doesn’t require any extra security clearance. So now I don’t have a ship date and I have no idea when I’m leaving. My Recruiter said I should give it couple months. Low key mad lol but 🤷🏽♀️. And also the Airforce and the Army aren’t accepting people with just green cards at the moment .
Just picked my job at MEPS ABH
Mauly. Maul when do you ship out?
Jasmine S June 8th 2020 how about u?
@@jaybeesavage5579 shipping out Nov. 19th 2019 for aircrew
Mauly. Maul you’re gonna hate your life bro lol
How’s it going?
Nuclear Navy is great. Out of bootcamp you are an E-4 and if you up to 8 year enlistment, they make you an E-5 Automatically. And usually in about 4-5 years in , you can make E-6 which is awesome.
Robert Twiddy false. You have to grad A skool to be e4
What rank are you in the US Navy?
E-5 waiting to wear E-6 in janurary.
AG. Best advancements consistently in my opinion
