Not true at all, people in the military are a lot more sentient.
If social media is a gray area to the military because its fairly new to them, then you first guys to do it are setting the bar and they are going to make sure you set the bar at a place that makes the military look good and you my friend have the bar set at Excellence!! Keep up the good work and congrats on that coin!

That admiral is the style of leadership the military need across the board!! I am Active Duty Army and that very reason is why I have been super skeptical about doing it but ima get in the regs a little bit and self educate and get the ball rolling in 2020!!

I guess the leaders just don’t want people taking advantage of their position to advertise and make more money. I’d say they’d have a good reason if that’s the case.

Fantastic story about your coin, cherish that always. I was a nurse at a military base (Ft. Sam) and prior Army soldier. Since this base has a heck of a lot of different branches training now, it just feels like home from when I was in the Army. Now for my story about my coin.
Anyway, it was a typical summer day, 110 at 4 pm. There was a DI (E-6) doing PT with his basic training troops, only you could tell they were literally passing out, etc. from the heat. I found the DI and asked him politely why he was out there. The first thing he shouted was "Take off your badge, you're off duty". I took it off and tried to ignore his rudeness. I asked if he noticed that his troops were in a bad way and that when I was in the Army, we did our PT about 5 am every day (back in the 70's). He tried to keep his attitude up and said well, there was water available. Now, when we were in basic, we would hardly ever go that route because it would make us look weak in the DI's eyes and make it worse for us. I imagine that's why the troops wouldn't drink any of the water that was available and told the DI that.
The DI then told me that was the only time available for them to do PT, which was BS. Texas heat is no joke and everyone knows that.Anyway, when he realized I knew the military, the attitude came back up and he told me to back off. I looked at him, made sure I got his name and company, and told him the next person I'd be going to was his company/ battalion. I got there and found the Battalion E-8 and told him what happened. Now there's this female nurse walking into his battalion HQ with a complaint. He saw how passionate I was about it and that I was polite even though he had an attitude. I also told him that I was prior Army and knew the system and thought what he was doing wasn't good for the troops. He gave me a Battalion coin for it and said thank you. I tell you, that coin stays in my bag with me wherever I go to this day (this was in 2005). It's one of my favorite things I will cherish for the rest of my life.
So, Austen cherish that coin. I'm sure you will just like I have.

You never posted military secrets, so what's the problem? I got a few coins from my time in. I got a picture with MCPON West when I was in...one of the highlights of my Navy days.
It's because the military is worried that if you say "mcdonalds is great" in uniform someone may think that as the military promoting mcdonalds. They don't want people getting paid to wear a uniform and make it look like the military is promoting ideas or products (was a MAJOR problem when i first got in.)
Basically it's like how you aren't suppose to say "I'm private snuffy and i promote x person for president" but you can say "i'm joe snuffy and i promote x person for president" They don't want the military involved because it's a bad look for them, and if you give a perception of military endorsement and then that company ends up making nuggets out of babies well that's a who lot of paper work for the military.
General rule i was taught: If you need the uniform to make a point, wait until you're out to make it.

War story for you Austin, reference your basic tng lip cutting story. In 2003 my buddy and I are medics for a MP Co in Iraq. Arrived in country April 2003 in Karbala and December 2003 were moved to Abu Ghraib (we had nothing to do with the prison). The site is mortared and shot at daily. No big deal. Haircut. My buddy shaves his head. Has the Iraqi barber shave his head. He uses a straight razor. Just as he begins to make his 1st stroke boom. Right outside the open wall hallway. Then boom, boom, boom. 30 seconds of rapid fire mortar rounds hit. We all hit the floor as crap is flying through the air in the open hallway. I look at my buddy and his head is gushing blood where the barber's hand jerked and cut him wide open when the first round hit. Picture blood, shaving cream, dirt and I'm trying to stop the bleeding. He got stitches and a white bandage taped to his head. We called it a Kotex. Man did we laugh about that.
Yeah no big deal... just large canon balls flying at your base at high velocity possibly threatening to make you lose your life.
