What do u do?
Navy is the best for travel but its travel on the Navys time. Like the video says, you get typically 4-6 days at any given port but you still have 4 duty sections. This means every 4 days you will stand duty. So if your section falls on a day while in port, you will stay on the ship and stand duty. Then when you are relieved from duty by the next section, you are off to enjoy the port. With all this in mind, remember, I've been to more countries then I ever would have outside the Navy. Traveling for free is a blessing, dont waste it getting smashed on beers. See the sites, enjoy the culture, and for fucks sake, stay away from McDonald's. Eat local food.

I've been in the navy for 15yrs. LS's can go anywhere for shore duty. For sea duty I've been to: Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, Bahrain, UAE, Norway, Scotland, Israel, Egypt, Romania, Georgia, Ukraine, Malta, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, England, Germany, Portugal, The Netherlands, Seychelles, and Djibouti. Good times.

In fours years of active duty I sailed around the world and went from top to bottom twice. This was because I followed the advice of a Navy Captain where I was stationed while waiting A School. Find Something you want to do and volunteer.. So I volunteered for Operation Deep Freeze Antarctica Exploration Task Group 43 in 1966 and was selected to serve on the USS Mills. Overseas homeported in Dunedin New Zealand and two around the world cruises- Panama, Samoa, Australia, Tasmania, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Tahiti, France, England, Campbell Island, Denmark Ross Ice Shelf -Also received Hazard Duty Pay, Magellan Sailor, Shellback, Bluenose, Golden Dragon
As a former Hospital Corpsman I can tell everyone it was an Awesome Rate and Duty. I Volunteered to go to the Green Side of the House. It IS AN HONOR TO SERVE WITH THE UNITED STATES MARIE CORPS!!!!!! To this day I still communicate with the MARINES AND SAILORS I had the HONOR to SERVE WITH. GO NAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!
While I was at NS Great Lakes, I met a young HM that was working at the hospital there. He left his home in Mississippi, went to Great Lakes for boot camp, went across the street for his HM A School (before it moved to Texas), got his first & only duty station at a hospital in Great Lakes, then he left the Navy and I assume that he went back home to Mississippi.
He told me that he joined the Navy to see the world, but this poor young man didn't even get to go across the Mississippi River. LOL.
Hey that’s a similar story: Great Lakes, Camp Pendleton, Iraq, Great Lakes literally checked in and went on an IA got back to Great Lakes for a few months and then got out.

I served in the Navy in the 60's on Destroyers. Was a Signalman by Choice. I enjoyed Seagoing Deck Rates. I joined to be a Real Sailor, not a technician. Saw Combat got Shot at but I am Home alive with good memories albeit Disablef fm a Cancer fm Agent Orange. I was a Lover, Fighter and Tin Can Rider. Old Navy.

When I was in the SeaBees (SW2) back in the '80's and early '90's my naval career road map was just as you said, first Rota Spain, then Okinawa, after that Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Saudi Arabia. My home port was Southern California, oh yeah, and I never set foot on a ship.

I was a AMH (69-89). My sea-shore Rotation was just about a equal 36 months sea/ 36 months shore. This worked great for my reinlistments and EAOS. I reenlisted for each time and rotated to duty station I wanted to go to, fortunately for me everytime.

I was a HT on a supply ship (AOR) and deployed on 2 Meds & 1 N. Atlantic in 3 years. My son ships for boot in less than 2 weeks for CTI. He chose the Navy over the USAF for the travel aspects, but his rating has an undefined sea-shore rotation. His experience will be different from mine, but the experience will serve him well.

The key is to really tell your parents they will not see you for two to three years if you go overseas. Yes you will miss them but there is something called video calling. Plus when you’re overseas sometimes a ticket to go state side is mostly over 2000 depending on where you are, literally use that same money and see 5 different countries for the same price. If your plan was to always return home just join the national guard 🤷🏾♂️. Also if you really do want to travel but get stuck on a shore duty first yes it might suck but try to get on a ship for your next command to make up don’t just quit after one.
I was a Machinist's Mate. You get to see how the world looks by looking through the white bulkheads of the Engineroom 18-20 hours a day. You only get every other day off in many ports because you are Aux Steaming. I must admit, though, that if my son didn't have diabetes and I needed to be stationed near a Naval Medical facility, my last duty station would have been beautiful and scenic El Centro, California.
I was on bird farm and basically you go where the ship goes. I did 2 West Pacs 87&89. I started in the Bering Strait to Australia. I went to places that people can only dream of.
NAS Sigonella was magnificent, my favorite duty station.

In the RCN the best job, I think, is Naval Combat Information.... you USN types call it OS. Lots of sea duty and very chill when not at sea. We are also very much in the know about what's happening and what's coming up.
Many rates have increased sea rotation nowadays. When I was in ET started at 4-2-3. That would be 4 years sea duty, 2 shore, then 3 sea duty. That was rough considering sea duty often involves plenty of time deployed. Now ET is 4.5-3.0-3.0. That's a little better. For family life I think that it's better to start a Navy career with shore duty. However, it's better at sea as far as earning awards and promotions.
I now work with a former hospital corpsman. He was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital in his short time in the Navy. He never deployed anywhere else. Generally he has no idea of what sea life is like. He has never been to General Quarters. Never been on a ship. Never part of a fire fighting party. He has never stood quarterdeck watch, never been on the bridge. Never been on Shore Patrol.

In the 90's ET sea shore rotation was 5 years sea, 3 years shore, then 3 and 3...
I had a plan where I was gonna experience Asia through deployments for 2 years, and on my last year... I was gonna visit as many countries as I could. Haha... thanks Covid
Not knowing where you're going is part of your military journey. Just go with it and try to enjoy it.
Intel Specialist can go pretty much anywhere if anyone interested in that.

@@emrys3368 Enjoyability, travel, and Ability to rank up. So the general things recruiters and the website haven't told me.
@@Iknowitswrong to put into perspective. I came in as an E3 due to having an associate degree and made E5 in 1 year and a month. That's also due to getting automatic E4 because of my contract. I'm in the UK and getting to work a NATO billet after my time in another building on the same base for half the time Ive been here. If you like speaking in front of people you should like it. You'll do a lot of briefing. I've even briefed a 4 star general. There is a lot of opportunities in this job field. That's about all I can say really. Only so much I can say on the job over the internet. This is also my first command. I go to a sea duty next. Hoping for Japan next. Got my first look for orders in a months time.
@@Iknowitswrong I personally really enjoy my job and the things I've got to do. He also isn't joking about overseas getting 4 day weekends and traveling on those four days. If it want for covid I would've been able to hit at least 5-10 EU countries this year alone. Maybe more.

Also. Once I get out of the naval academy. Do I just go to the recruiters office and show him my papers and say look put me in OCS?
I’m a Damage Controlman and we are a sea intensive rate and my first and current command is a LCS Maintenance Division which is a Type 2 sea duty but more like shore duty.
i ship out to basic in a couple weeks for dc can i ask how you like the rate and where you’ve gone?

Out of a 6 month ship deployment you're lucky if you make 2 port stops. If you really want travel opportunities join the reserves you have many options and many opportunities.
CTI has some of the worst for travel you can only be stationed at centers of excellence and the only overseas duty station you can go to is Bahrain.
What about CTT? Or is it the same thing?
LampLight CTT has more travel opportunities because it’s a surface job. CTI is only at navy centers of excellence and you are limited based on your language you are selected for.
RP rating travel A Lot especially in Sea Duty billets and Overseas Shore Duty billets
Admin is a good travel job for all branches

Former Seabee EO. Vietnam , Sydney Australia, Phillipines, Guam, New Zealand, Antarctica, Bermuda, Rota Spain, Newfoundland, Puerto Rico.
When I went to the Indian Ocean, we only had two port visits, Singapore when we entered, Perth when we left. I do not know if that has changed. We were 100 days in the Indian Ocean. We did visit Diego Garcia.
I want to go to Subic bay, Philippines! Oh yeah you can't. How bout Patayya Beach, Thailand? I was at both and more in 83.

STG’s have a 5 /2 sea/shore duty rotation. So yea more than likely I’m going to be deployed a lot.
Seabees travel A LOT, especially underwater construction seabees.
My recruiter said it’s rare to get in the Seabees he said he wanted to do the same but wasn’t available? True information? Is it that hard. ?
@@mustangaddict589 that depends on the recruiting station every station has a quota, and how full are seabees. right now i think they are over manned. i wanted seabees but it was taken quick. if you really want it you gotta play the wait game

basically every supply, weps, adm, engineers rate will make u travel ... if u asking about which rate is best? idk .. im an RS and to be honest in the navy we have this saying: “pick ur rate, choose ur fate.” so’ it’s up to you which rate is the best for you...

Besides rates that have sea duty a lot, I think the rate that gets to travel the most is probably CT. They are supposed to have 3 years of rotation INCONUS and OCONUS, instead of sea duty/shore duty, so they literally get to live in a different part of the world every 3 years and can still deploy on ships when needed. Now the downside is that they pretty much always have to live in the same place INCONUS because that is based on the language they specialize in, but again, they can still be deployed for temporary duty while stationed INCONUS. So that means travel opportunities no matter whether you are deployed or not.
Certain languages get to be in Camp Smith, lucky bastards.

Aviation rates are cool and they translate well in the civilian world. Advancement is not particularly good for the aviation community right now but there is room for growth. Either way it's not a bad way to go.

@@Hydrobandz CTs, GSE's, OS's, AG's, any of the Nuke ratings, IT's, FC's. Stay away from aviation rates or seabees rates if advancement is your goal. Talk to a recruiter to see which rates are advancing the quickest. Good luck.

They usually get stationed at a base gate and scan badges at first then get stationed on a base as security

Lmao, I did - in 1987 dollars. Freshly divorced, and I knew that if I was going to ever do it I had to get it done. Turned 30 in boot and did 9 years. To each, their own - and more power to them.

I’m confused on what I’m looking at lol, CTT is called in land, air, or sea do you know if I will be getting sea duty more often then some other rates?
My info maybe very dated now as I left the spook community some time go: If you are in a CTT DIRSUP (surface/subsurface) role (POS 3 or POS 4) then expect to be deployed often from a shore duty station but with a sea duty UIC. The shore CTT (non-DIRSUP mostly POS 3) is OUTUS/CONUS rotation. Aircrew CTT (I think POS 3 and 4) will mostly be in the aircrew role but can cross deploy to the standard DIRSUP role. YMMV

@@thetylerburch No worries, I was an 'operational' matman and spent much of my career in DIRSUP doing Pos3/4 stuff as well as maintenance but in the darkside. Hard work opened that door for me and I as a happy happy boy doing amazing shit often (deployed a lot - subs, surface, air and even Army - everywhere that was hot and cold) until I had to return to the regular blue Navy at Corry. Best advice is try and be an operational asset and strive to own everything you do no matter how mundane. There are many hidden doors in the community that are opened for hard workers who own their mission responsibilities. Good luck.
What about subs? Do they primarily go out and then come back to their home port? Or will they get to visit other countries as well?
If you are on a fast attack submarine or a guided missile submarine, yes. They go to ports: norway, Scotland, israel, etc. If you are stationed on what's called a "Boomer" submarine aka nuclear submarine, No. You will only go to ports within the United states, that's it. The trade off is boomers are better quality of life, smaller deployments or as they say "patrols. It's all about what you want out of the navy. Hope this helps.
Chris Moo yes! Thank you. My son just got to RTC then headed to Groton. He’s extremely smart, so hopefully he will do very well and get to choose where he goes. Are the fast attacks at all US ports? Or does he need to try to get a certain duty station? He wants Hawaii.
@@bggfarm the following bases have subs: California, Washington, Connecticut, Virginia, Georgia, Hawaii, Japan. If hes on a nuke sub "boomer" (ssbn) he will be stationed in either Bangor, Washington or Kings Bay, Georgia. If hes on a fast attack (ssn) or guided missile sub (ssgn) he can go to any of them. Oh also I believe their are subs in Guam as well. A small island.
My SN is in groton right now for sub school. He is an ETV rate. He said they give you a dream sheet to put your favorite options but nothing is guaranteed.

Did you have to take "time off" to do all that traveling?
Most of the time no because overseas we were allowed 4 days off every holiday. I usually found myself needing to use my leave or lose it if the end of the year was coming up.
Little known navy secret: use the MAC flights or AMC flights. Planes that the Navy own on the base tra el to different countries daily. There is a schedule for flights that you can purchase for maybe 50 bucks at the most. The only caveat is if sailors need your seat for orders, they bump you. Other than that you can fly go Europe for less than 100 bucks. I'm talking Rota, Spain, Sigonella, Italy, Souda Bay, Crete, Greece, Rammstein, Germany, and other countries. Also asian countries too mostly Japan. I wish I knew this when was new to the navy. Just for your FYI!

Im older now, 31, im thinking of joining for the travel. Only interested in 4 years and im out but im worried ill just get stationed at home in san diego lmao
just go reserves they dont do anything on the ship just made them take out trash most of the time. unless of course they know what to do but sometimes they dont and its a waste to train them because they are gone to quick unless youre on a bigger ship with longer deployments

I turned thirty in boot camp. The age restrictions change over time. I was assigned to boot camp and then to ships botj home ported in San Diego. Went to about 15 different places in four years and more in the total of nine years I was in. Choose your job (rate) carefully. The old saying is true, "choose your rate, choose your fate."

Depending on your command, but you do get wider range of location to select, I had a pilot who was a RP.

Yes ... But keep in mind that shore duty can be overseas such as Japan, Spain, Iceland
Detailers try to get everyone to sea duty 1st. It's possible to get shore duty 1st but it happens less often.

I got YN and I heard they travel a lot.
They travel no different than other sea going rates. The benefit is you can be stationed anywhere cause all commands need YN's.

HELP‼️ is it possible to go from sea duty to shore duty in a 5 year contract? After hitting two years can my husband ask to be switch to shore duty? I am doing efmp(i have heart diseases, chronic illness, and more tests are being performed and i have upcoming heart surgeries) He is doing the hums packet rn as well.... and is considering asking for separation....is there anyway he can get changed to shore duty after he hits his two year mark?
1. I'm sorry that you are sick and I hope you get better.
2. You have to get paperwork from your doctor to enroll in efmp. Once you do that, get a schedule of all your appointments and surgeries. Your husband then can take that to his command. If the CO deems that he cant be out to sea anymore as a result of having to be with you at all the appointments and surgeries he will do 1 of 2 things: 1. He will send your husband TAD (temporary assigned duty) which means he will still be on sea duty but maybe attached to a shore command so that he can accompany you to all your appointments and surgeries. 2. Remove him from the ship all together and he will have to renegotiate orders with a detailer.
What's most important is that you are enrolled in efmp 1st or else this is all moot. It's possible they also seperate him from the navy as well. That's worst case scenario and least likely. They legally cant seperate you while you are being treated for a chronic illness. God be with you.
